Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario a little bit. Mario Lopez joining
out on Zoom from the new movie Spinning Gold. My man,
Jay Farrell, Welcome to the show, Jay, how you been?
What's up? Man? I can't complain money in the while
at Walker Slow Drinker Cole Walter. I could complain, but
nobody would listen. Yeah, I totally understand, man, I mean
we were talking before we started. I've been a big
fan for a while. I always look forward to projects

(00:22):
you're working on, and I love that this movie takes
place in the seventies because that's that's a that's a
cool era right there. Explain what it's about. It's a well,
it's the story of Casablanca Records and Buddha Records. Um
So the artists like kiss Um Um p Funk, George Clinton,
um Uh, Ronald Osley, Donna Summers, Bill Withers, um Um

(00:46):
also a Gladys Knight. So what's the story of It's
the story of the genesis, the genesis of this record
label and ultimately what happened, what happened during the Rids,
the fall everything. Um I get to play. I'm playing
Cecil Homes, who was Neil Bogart's right hand man, Neil Bowguard,
is the founder of Consta Blanca Records. I am the

(01:07):
co founder of Consta Blocker Records in this movie, and man,
it was a different time. It was sex, drugs and
rock and roll and uh, ninety five percent of the
stuff that you could do back then, you you can't
do it now and you don't want to. Yeah, no,
because you're you don't want to get canceled. You'll get
canceled really quickly. But um, it's such a it's a

(01:30):
it's a what type of story? What I like to
call this? It is a uh, it's an underdog story.
It's about it's about betting on yourself and thinking it
until you make it, but believing in yourself when other
people don't believe in you. Like, I had no clue
that Kiss was even a rock and roll group that

(01:55):
that was looked upon with disdain by anybody, like because
they were so huge. It became so big, I didn't
know that it was the live show and not the
album that really did it for them. And you know,
they struggle, but Neil Bogart took a chance on them.
He took a chance on every artist on this label

(02:15):
and somehow he ended up spinning gold a day. I
like what you did right there. I can't wait because,
like I said, I love this era and I'm a
big music lever and I love the music from this era.
To hear these origin stories, I think are gonna be awesome, man.
And I'm all about faking it till you make it
because that's basically the story of my life. Figure it
out once I get there. At a lot of funny

(02:36):
people in this cast too, my voice of Faster, amount
of Scout Gold, Chris Red, Michael Ian Black. So it
would you say it's more of a comedy than a drama,
I would say that. I would say there are some
comedic parts in it, but the base of this movie
is dramatic. But you can't have drama without having a
little bit of a comedy in there. So there are

(02:57):
some funny exchanges I would say that went on and Um,
but it's it's a it's a it's a dramatic, heartfelt
It's a heartfelt movie, bro, And I mean the stories
that people don't know. That's what I'm so excited for
people to see, man, Like I didn't personally know that. Um,
the Village people didn't really sing. I didn't know that,

(03:19):
you know, I didn't like I told you. I didn't
know that chich went through their mishaps. I didn't know
that Barry Gordy was was was was an enemy because
we were stealing Casa Blanca records. Was was was still
an artist from there. I didn't know any of that.
So it's cool when you know the when you know
the tracks, but it makes it even more special when

(03:41):
you know the history of everything. And now I know that, Yeah,
a lot of people are gonna be surprised. And when
you can learn something as well as uh getting entertained,
it's the best. You got a lot of cool artists
cameos to Jason Drulo, Whis Khalifa? Who? Who who'd you
have the most fun with? Come visit on set? I say,
Whis Khalifa was was the most fun? Was? I bet

(04:03):
he was? Because yeah, doing those scenes, yeah that those
scenes were probably the realest ones when when going around
I'm just saying, I bet and whatever, Man, it's New York,
you know what I mean, it's the criminalize whatever I'm
saying with you, I'm with you a j quickly. Also
in the works, something called Mort and Sherman Oaks, which

(04:24):
sounds funny. Anything you can tell us about that, Um,
I can tell you that. I can tell you Jim Gaffigan,
isn't it? And I can tell you that, Um, that's
a fun one to do. And I play. I can
tell you I played somebody. I played somebody who works
at the Morgue. I could tell you that. I could
tell you that. Okay, but I will say this, Mort

(04:48):
finds out something. He finds out something super daunting that's
about to happen, and what he ends up what he
ends up doing is basically living out the way that
he's supposed to live things out. So I could tell
you that about more at Sherman Oaks. But it's an
interesting it's that's another good one. Fair enough? Did you
get to shoot it in Sherman Oaks? We shot it

(05:11):
in Passadena? Hey, how you're not gonna Staks if they
shot in Passadena? Okay, I don't work. At least you
kept in La If you would have told me like
we were in Vancouver, I'm like, no, no, no, no,
I shoot. I do shoot a show up there. Well,
a million little things. I shoot that up there. But
you know it's the last season, so you know, I'm
not going there to shoot that no more. But we

(05:32):
did shoot some of this movie in uh in Canada,
though we shot half of it in Montreal. Oh my god,
that's so funny. Well that's a cool city though. You
can have a good time right there. Oh yeah, yes
you can't. Saint Katherine Street. What up? Hey, That's what
I'm saying. Hey, man, congratulations on everything. Great to see
talented people like yourself continue to do their thing. Spinning

(05:54):
Gold is hitting theaters on the thirty first. Jay, thanks
so much for hanging out. Brother, hope to see in person.
Thanks for having me man, next time, definitely, Man, we
gotta we gotta do it. Brother. Like I said, I
am a physician. Okay, hey, I'll take it. Man. Not
