Speaker 1 (00:00):
Real fun with Mario Lopez. It's up broll Mario Lopez
joining me now on Zoom NBA Hall of Famer, Lakers Legend,
my Man Magic Johnson. Welcome to the show, sir.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
How you been, Oh, I've been good, Mario. How about yourself?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
I'm well, Thank you so much for asking. Always enjoy
catching up with you. I've been seeing you well, the
last time I've been seeing you is usually at the
Dodgers games, ironically not the Lakers games. We'll get to
that in the second. But first off, Lebron recently became
the first player with forty thousand points, so I know
he came straight out of high school and I was
trying to do the math. I'm like, would Kareem have

(00:35):
gotten that had he not gone? What are your thoughts
and where do you put him with the all time
great conversation?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Oh, it's that's easy. He's definitely one of the all
time greats. I mean, he's right there with Michael Jordan
in terms of you know, one of the greatest has
ever played, right there with Kareem, one of the greatest.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Has ever played, yourself, thank you, and what he's been
able to do to be able to play what twenty
one years I think it is, and or twenty years
one or the other.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
But to keep his body in such a great condition
and strong and really never had a serious injury, Right,
That's exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
What I always say.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Aside from his athletic ability, it's his durability to me
that's most important.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yes, and then to be able to actually be a
pass first player and to still score forty thousand.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Points is amazing.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
And I'm just happy that he's wearing the purple and
gold Laker uniform and we as the fans, just like
Kobe was special, shag on and on Kareem, he's special
wearing the Laker uniform. And I'm happy that he broke
the record hit wait a long time ago thirty eight

(01:53):
thousand and now to score forty thousand, it's amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, it truly is. You're here today to talk about
RSV infections. Tell us about this new campaign that you've launched.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yeah, Mario, our team double gsk apartnering with them to sideline.
RSV is a common contagious virus that really are affecting
those who are sixty and over, and we want everybody
sixty and over to educate yourself about RSV, Call your doctor,

(02:26):
call your pharmacists. Make sure you get all the information
because last year, one hundred and seventy seven thousand people
were hospitalized from RSV and fourteen thousand of them end
up dying from RSV. So we want you to make
sure you educate yourself about RSV and you go to

(02:48):
sideline RSV dot com to get more information as well.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Got it.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
So if you've got an older adult in your life,
you should check out once again RSV dot com and
you get the info correct.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah, get all the info or call your doctor, call
your pharmacist, and then for the first time there is
a vaccine so you can actually get vaccinated for it
as well.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Well, that's great to know. Thanks for raising that awareness level.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Magic.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Now you said you've never watched Winning Time on HBO.
Is there still an opportunity for that entire story to
be told?

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, the right story, Mario.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
You know, it's always a story or it's the right story.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Right exactly.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I think that the Lakers the franchise is such an
amazing franchise, and I just want the real story to
be told about doctor Jerry Buzz, about the players, about
Jerry West, you.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Know, and so it wasn't the real story.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
So that's why all the Lakers we didn't watch it,
because it's hard, Mario to go and capture showtime unless
you were right there in the moment, because there was
so many elements to showtime.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
There was the Laker girls, you know, so you Paula
Abdul and all of them down there dancing. Then it
was the show on the court with all of us
as the players, and then doctor Bust the ultimate playboy,
you know, and he had Hugh e Fner and all
the playmates. And then there was the Form Club because

(04:31):
that was the hottest nightclub in the city, was actually
in the Forum. Yeah, it was all those things, and
it's hard to capture that unless you were right there
and you were a part of it.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
I always tell everyone, I am so blessed to have
been born when I did because it was during that era.
I truly believe that era, our generation was the best
to peak for social media before people people were kind
mind in their own business you did, which it was
just outstanding.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Man.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
That was a magical time. Magic. Of course, you've been
just as successful as an entrepreneur as you have been
as an athlete. What's the biggest lesson young people need
to learn about money in business?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well, first of all about money.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Understand that you know them credit cards, You know it
can put you in debt fast and then a hurr.
So make sure you understand that. First, understand that the
dollar because a lot of us didn't grow up in money,
so you have to learn money, the power of it,

(05:41):
how to save money, how to invest money, you know,
So make sure that you educate yourself.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
About those things.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
And then last but not least, make your money, make
money for you, right, And so.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Here I am.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
I grew up my whole life, six sisters, three brothers,
and I grew up poor, but I.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Got role models, and I.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Got mentors to teach me about money, first to save
it and then how to invest it. And that's why
you know I'm owner of the Dodgers today and other
commanders today because I listened to them.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
I applied what they said. And here I am. So
again you said it earlier, Mario.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
I'm happy I grew up when I grew up because
all of us, you and I and all of us,
we all hung out. You and I are a big
boxing fan, so I used I saw you at the boxing.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Matches all the time, you know, so I can ask
you question.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
I had access to you and to others, and so
I took advantage of that. A lot of times we
don't take advantage of people right in front of too
scared to approach them ask them questions. I'm not one
of those guys. I always ask questions. Even today, I'm
sixty four years old, I'm still asking a lot of questions,

(07:11):
trying to learn as much as I.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Can to better myself.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
So I think that now with this social media or platform,
young people can hit a button and learn so much.
So make sure that you apply yourself to learn and
get smarter, get better about money, about finances, and about
the power of owning your own home. That's powerful right there.

(07:38):
So all the things that you and I already know.
These young people need to have that knowledge.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Such smart advice everything he said. That's awesome right there,
magic Because I just saw this the other day, back
in the day. I mean, I seen it a long
time ago, but but it's resurface. You were in MJ's
video for Remember the Time. What do you remember about
him approaching you and about shooting it?

Speaker 3 (08:03):
First of all, I had the Jackson five poster up right,
So I was already mj who wasn't I mean, I'm
talking about a fanatic. I tried to throw my fro,
like Michael and Jackie and Marlon, Tito, all of them,
you know. And so then I get this call, right,
I was friends with Jackie. Jackie Jackson used to come

(08:26):
to every Laker game, so I became friends with him,
Michael's brother.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
So I get this call, Maggie, this is Michael. I
want you to be in my video. I hung the phone,
man Mario, somebody playing the joke, somebody do the depression exactly.
So the phone ringing right back again. Hello, Mijie, this

(08:53):
is Michael. Michael, this is not Michael Jackson. So I
hung the phone up again. My god.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
So five minutes later, Jackie caused me. He said, Magic,
that was really what O, My god, that's hilarious.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Michael Jackson's going this motherfucker keeps taking a fuck, I know.
He said, that's hilarious. I was please forgive me, Please
forgive me. I'm sorry. I didn't know that was really you.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
And so he go to his house that night because
he said, come here, I want to talk to you
about being in my video.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
I said, get cool. I go to the house. He
asked what you want for dinner.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
I said, hey, I want some give me some grilled chicken,
some vegetables.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
I'm trying to impress them. You know, he's healthy.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
We get to the crib and Mario Mine come out,
the guy you know, off the top and presented to me.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Nice great he the waiter comes out.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
He brings Michael and it's a big bucket of Kentucky
fried chicken. And I said, Michael Jackson Kentucky chicken. Man.
I said, Michael, I can't sit all the way down here.
I'm coming down there with you and get into that bucket.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
I grew up on Kentucky fire chicken.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
And we sat man and ate chicken and talked about
his vision. Mario the greatest entertainer all the time question,
no doubt, there's nobody has ever been able to reach
that level of greatness as a singer, a dancer, a

(10:54):
guy that that understood way before videos were member.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
He did he did something. He made a movie. His
videos were a movie. Yeah, they were events, yes, amazing.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
So to be in there with Eddie Murphy, everybody that
was hot.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
At that time. Yeah, yeah, it's great.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
It was clow Man, thank you so much for taking
the time to say that story.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
