Speaker 1 (00:01):
Mario a little bit. It's up on Mario Lopez joining
me now on Zoom. I mean nominated comedian and actor
Michael Yo, welcome back to the show Man. How you
been man, It's been a crazy two years, but we're back. Man,
We're back. Nice. I like your background right there? You
in your office right now? Are you at Yeah? I'm
in my office. I'm all about Jordan's. Do you have
something you collect? I see that. Um, I guess watches

(00:25):
a little bit. I don't like avidly collect them. I
just have managed to accumulate them over the years. But uh,
you know what's funny. My wife has gotten into a
Jordan kick as of late, and she's been like just
scooping up like she got Jordan's everywhere. Now. I'm like, okay,
she's just about being comfortable. Now comfortable now, So I
gotta catch up my shoe games. Man. I am a
sneaker hit and I love some Jordan's. Man, I'm always

(00:46):
trying to win them or getting all that sneaker app
so I'm addicted. Bro. Wow. Alright, alright, um, well, let's
talk about your new special. It's out now. I never
thought is the name of it? How did you choose
where you wanted to film this. Well, I I taped
it in Tempe, Arizona, probably the reddest place you could
take for special because I was like, if it works there,

(01:07):
it'll work everywhere, you know, And they came out in
the comedy specially. It was so good to be in
front of people and to tape it. And it's about
the last two years of my life, almost dying from
COVID and then coming out the other end and appreciating
life and being with family and friends. And you know,
it's called I never thought because I never thought, um,

(01:29):
I would almost die from COVID. I never thought, you know,
I would have a daughter. I never thought I would
have this great family. So it's a it's a family comedy,
but it goes through some ups and downs. Wow. So
I didn't know it was that serious when um, when
you got COVID because you're a young, healthy guy, or
was there another issue? No, No, it was it was
so random. I was in New York though, the week

(01:51):
before they shut down. I was in New York the
ninth and tenth performing at this comedy club and there
was no mass mandates. We I was talking to everybody
shaking hands hugging people. And about a week and a
half later, I came home and started gasping for air
and they took me to the hospital right in l
a And I was one of the first people in
the hospital. Less than a hundred people died from it

(02:12):
when I went in, and they didn't know what they
were doing. Just think we still I don't know exactly
what we're doing. But back then, man, it was scary,
Like they tested a bunch of drugs on me. They
tried everything on me. They didn't put me on a ventilator,
which worked. So man, I was blessed. I was. I'm
just happy to be alowed. I made it out of
the woods. Good for you, and you dropped this directly
to YouTube. What made you want to go independent? Because

(02:35):
March seventeenth was the day I went into the hospital
and now is exactly two years later. And Joe Koy
brought me in the comedy and he's been my mentor,
and he goes, man, you gotta bet on yourself, and
you gotta you gotta start owning everything you do. And
that's and with this, I own everything. No matter what
happens with this special I will own it for the
rest of my life, all the money that comes from it,

(02:58):
it will go directly in my pocket. And you know,
it's kind of like what you're seeing now. People are
starting to own their own content. It's Instagram, YouTube, everything,
So moving forward, I want I want to own everything
I do. Good for you, Good for you. Um Joe
was a good guy too. I like that. Dude, Yeah,
did you do? You find that things are pretty much
back to normal When it comes to being on the road,

(03:20):
it's you know, it's it depends where you go. I'll
go to a red state and you you would never
even think there was a pandemic there. I go into
like a New York or Rhode Island, which I'm going to,
you gotta be vax and a mask, you know. Uh.
And this was only like two weeks ago. So it
really depends where you go. But you see how different
people treat the pandemic, and it's really eye opening because

(03:44):
you'll hear about, oh my god, these people are doing
it this way, and then you go there and you're like, oh,
it really is that way, and then you kind of like, oh, well,
how can we merge these you know, where it's not
like so extreme either way, it's it's it's so, it's insane,
it's it's insane, comical, Um, what are you talking about?
On stages days? So I talked about going to the hospital,

(04:06):
the whole COVID experience. I talked about going to the
hospital and it was so early in it. They gave
me hydroxychloroquin and it didn't go well. My temperature shut
up to a hunter and four point eight. But the
doctor said, my life, and he's walking out of room.
He turns back around and goes, man, we learned something
new today, like those kind of what's got a little
things that happened in your life and with my daughter

(04:27):
versus my son. Now you know the love and how
you're pulled back and forth. You know, it's just it's
just it's it's just a loving comedy special. Nice. Nice.
You also got a podcast, right, the Yo Show. Yeah,
The Yo Show. I I interview big comics, celebrities, and
I love that. I got Jim Jefferies on their Joky,
Dane Cook, Bill Burr, so all of them are on

(04:49):
the podcast and every week I put out a new episode,
and uh man, I just I love and I owned
that too, So I love doing the podcast. And then
I did a show with Bonnie Hunt that's coming out
in a couple of months on Apple TV, and that
was She's a legend. It was just incredible working with her.
For you, man, um called to the kids, Now, how

(05:10):
many got five and two? My son has five? My
daughters too, how about your um? Eight and two? A
girl and two boys? Just crazy about a two year old?
Is you always have to watch them because they will
literally fall off a couch. My two year olds of mania.
I keep leaping off couches. Yeah. Yeah, it's it's scary,

(05:33):
but that's it for us. Like I'm done with two.
I can't do three. I can't. I can't. Yeah, you're
good to go, Yeah, exactly. How would you describe your
parenting style? Um? I mean my wife is very she
gives them what they want and I'm not liking for sir,
you know. But with my daughter is different. You know,

(05:54):
I'm a soft ye to her. I don't know what
it is. It's just like she likes me more than
my son right now. Yeah, that's saying they did daddy's
girls for reasons. Yeah, yeah, they do. And she is
just gravitates towards me and I can't I don't seem
to get upset with her no matter what she does.
But my son, he could do the little thing and
I'll be like, hey man, you need to stop that.

(06:15):
I don't know why that is, and I'm trying to
figure that out. Sometimes I whop my son's asked before breakfast, yea,
so trust me. I was like, we just woke up.
You're really gonna take this ass whooping right now. It's
so true. But your daughter, You're just like, oh, Angel,
do what you gotta do. I understand. Yeah, No, good

(06:35):
for you. Man. It sounds like everything is going really well, um,
professionally and personally, and I want to make sure everyone
checks out. I never thought on YouTube. Michael, thanks checking in.
Thank you so much. I'll just go to Michael Yo
dot com and you can watch it. I appreciate you. Mario,
