Speaker 1 (00:00):
On with Mariotte. So if you're all Maria Lopez joining
me in studio right now, the very talented Mika Kelly,
how are you great? How are you? I am fantastic,
especially that we were talking off air right now about
your former la days in Albuquerque, New Mexico. No, you
weren't really a choilt, but I didn't know. You lived

(00:20):
there for a while and you kicked it with a
lot of rassa and got the accent and everything that is.
I was raised there, My family was there. My dad
was Mexican. My family was raised Mexican. Yeah, your father is, well,
my stepfather who raised me biological father, No, but I
reconnected with him when I was eighteen years old. Got it.

(00:42):
My father who raised me is Mexican. Right, So it
was a culture growing up in high school. Really, look
at that, I think I can discover You think you
know someone coming out here with all this flavors. So
that's awesome. So let's talk about, uh, this character you're
playing a superhero apropos in this new show Titans. Congratulations,
tell me about Dove. Dove is part of a duo

(01:06):
Hawk and Dove. Um, Dove is the Yeah, Dove is
the avatar of peace, Hawk is the avatar of war,
and they she balances them out. Um, it's not often
you get to see a love story with superheroes. So
that's one thing that's different from the show than any
other one. You know what You're right, Yeah, you don't
see because superheroes have feelings too. Well, there's romantic the

(01:28):
fact that we're actually not superheroes were vigilante, So you
get to see the backstory of how we became vigilante.
Is what happened in our lives that broke us, that
made us want to fight. Um, to protect, to protect
the good of the people. But you have heroic powers, correct, Um?
I am. I have a background in ballet and uh

(01:50):
people gmnastics and um jiu jitsu, so I'm pretty talented.
So I can fight, and I have a super suit
and I have wings. We have the same baground by
the way, just coincidence. Seriously, But go, I don't have wings.
I'll gone, I have thirty pound wings that I wear
that I can't fly because they tried. It's as realistic
as possible. Um, you can't because I can't fly, because

(02:13):
that would be not realistic. You know that you have wings.
There my shield and there my weapon. So I take
people under my wing and protect them and I slice
people with them when I fight. Oh yeah, the fighting.
We all have our own individual specific style of fighting,
and in particular is like a dancer. Were you growing

(02:34):
up background? Not really, not, especially not in ballet, So
I had to uh, oh, that's probably giving something away.
But yeah, anyway, my backgrounds okay, okay, but I had
to train and that was probably the hardest training I've
ever done. Yeah, growing up? What what were you into?
Were always? I was into softball. I was a kickboxer

(02:55):
in high school. I had to learn how to fight
living in a having a nourquerque. Yes, and I was.
I was a kickboxer and I played softball. Yeah, okay,
got and you just fell into theater um or or
or acting, I should say. I came back to l
A just to to because it's where I was born,
and I reconnected with my dad and that's where he

(03:16):
was and um. Among the many jobs that I had,
I one of them. A friend of mine took me
with him to the to their an acting class, and
I just sort of got hooked by way of it
being sort of therapy. It was the first time I
learned that I spoke funny and that I probably looked funny,
and um, it was. It was just a discovery process

(03:40):
and and and it was therapeutic and and it was
addicting and so by funny by the way, just to
fill in the audience, there was nothing funny about you,
especially when we looked and and talk for that matter.
Is just you become a product of the culture you
grow up in. Yeah, I too, grew up around a
lot of Latinos, being a Bordertown king Chula Vista. So
I go back. All of a sudden, I started talking
like this. Yeah, it's it just it just comes out

(04:01):
and so, you know, you you become conscious of it
later on. But I love it because it gives you
street cred and you've got flavor. Now. I was already
a Kelly fan, but it just went next level. Thanks
So um, this show is part of the DC universe. Yeah. So,
d C Comics is launching their own streaming service and
they will be launching it with this show. It's awesome. Yeah,

(04:22):
very cool. What do you guys shooting in Toronto. We
just wrapped our first season a couple of weeks ago. Oh, nice.
How do you like it up there? I love it.
It's a beautiful city. Yeah, crazy people, great food. Ironically,
there's a lot of production in Albuquerque. I've actually done
a couple of projects. Or was that the case when
you were growing up, but not till later didn't start
becoming that one had no idea of the business back then. Yeah, Yeah,

(04:44):
that was fun fact on the side right there. Um.
And then later this year you have a movie coming
out called is It No No Miss? Pardon me miss?
And it sounds cool, like a psychological psychological thrill about that? Um,
I haven't about that? And what um that that that
just we that just finished. Um, that's with um Henry,

(05:08):
Thank you is a small part of the film Fellow
d C Universe Superman exactly. Um, it's it's a really
exciting psychological thriller. I play Henry Cavill's wife ex wife, UM,
and we battle over how to raise our daughter a
little bit while he is um, he's a he's I

(05:31):
worry about his life in danger, fighting crime and I'm
not doing the movie any justice at all. Sounds tremendous. Yeah,
but that's cool that you get that, you get to
mix it up and getting back to Dove, which which
sounds very cool. Ironically, you've teamed up with Dove chocolate, right,

(05:54):
Was that just purely coincidental? Purely coincidental. Yeah, I was
working with Dove Chocolate last year before or Titans came,
before Dove the character Dove came, Um, and it just
sort of was, Yeah, I love me some Dove chocolate.
I too have worked with Dove Chocolate. Yes, yes, I
saw that. Actually I saw that they made they made

(06:15):
a body sculpture in chocolate off of your body and wow, yes, yes,
exactly still has that in his fridge. Right, I just
chip away it daily. I've gotten the norm, got to it. Yeah. No,
So the really really nice folks over there, and really
good chocolate, the best. It's happens to be my favorite

(06:35):
chocolate truly. And and then when I learned about the
work that they're doing, I really wanted to be on board.
Last year they invited me out to Ecuador with them
to visit with the farmers, and um, see what they're
doing on the farm and actually see exactly how the
chocolate is made from the bean to the bar process,
and um, I was amazed at how hands on each

(06:58):
process is actually is the farmers by hand, each being
they're inspecting. And I was amazed by that and also
amazed by the work that they're doing with the women
in West Africa. They're empowering their farmers, are empowering their women,
and um, the thing they work with an organization called Care,
which is a nonprofit organization fighting global poverty, and the

(07:19):
things that they do with the women in West Africa
is they help them with their finances and help them
save their money so that they can then apply for
a micro loan which will then help them create their
own business, start their own business. And so what excites
me about that is that they're not just employing female farmers,
but they're empowering them to be in a position of
power themselves. That's awesome that they get behind such great

(07:41):
causes on top of being great chocolate. What's your favorite?
The dark chocolate with almonds. See I'm a dark chocolate
guy too. Yeah, I noticed she said almonds. They always
tease me because I say almond. No one brought anything up.
Shut up. I saw the look. I'm like, if almans
wanted to be called all men's, why doesn't have two els?
Like all day? Right? Are you with me, Micau's not

(08:01):
with you. The only person I know that, says Alman.
Sterns believes me. No, you're just co signing because she
said Almonds whatever, Sterns whatever. Um. We got a lot
of people obviously know you from Friday Night Lights and
you spent a few years on the show. Since reboots
are all the rage, Um, that'd be a good one.
Would you ever consider it if they approached you. I

(08:23):
think some things are better left wanting more right right, Like,
I think it's good where we left off. Was that
a fun experience? It was the best. You kidn't changed
my life. It was the best. And I got to
live in Austin for four years, one of my favorite
places in the world. That's a fun town. Yeah, that's
what they did. Really shoot it in Austin. That's oh yeah.
So you worked in Toronto. Um from Alberque, but l

(08:45):
A is home now. I love it staying here? Yeah good,
No no chance for Albuquerque. Right exactly before I let
you all and put you on the spot. Quick questions,
quick answers. Okay, first car Ford escort hatchback. That's so
ourquirquy right there, most daring or dangerous thing. You've done

(09:09):
sky diving, scuba diving, sky diving, all kinds of diving.
Did you like it? I love it. I've done it twice. Right, Yeah,
it's fine. We're subject in school math right after basic
Brithman tick. I'm just like, yeah, fashion, you wish would
come back in style? Oh oh, I don't know, come

(09:33):
back and style. I feel like it's all coming back.
It's all cyclical anyway, right, it's inevitable it'll come back.
Moon moves. I'm down with the moon move. Um celebrity crush.
Growing up Warrengey regulators really warrangey. The first time we've

(09:54):
ever gotten that our first warreng gy. So so that
was just you, Yeah, because what you were high school
when that was coming out. That's cool, that's cool, that's cool.
Superpower either. I think flying, I think it would be
amazing to fly, just to be like to go fly

(10:17):
through the trees in a forest like skydiving. I skyt
of twice. If I could just do that without having
to jump out of the plumb regular and then um,
last one, if you can go back in time for
one week in any era, what wanted to be It's
been a week with my mom. Oh, the most poignant answer.
That was beautiful. On that note, be sure to check

(10:38):
out Minka in Titans later this year on d C Universe,
and be sure to follow her on Twitter at Minka Kelly.
