Speaker 2 (00:02):

Speaker 3 (00:05):
Everybody is Steve, j en Vy, Jess Hilarious, Charlomagne the God.
We are the Breakfast Club. Lorna Rosa filling in for
Jess uh and we are taping this on Halloween. That's
why Charlomagne and myself have on these costumes.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
I don't have a costume.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
It's regular a regularly this regularly on piece on the
regular regular company. All right, well, we got a special
guest in the building. We got the brother Caden Mingo. Welcome,
Thank you, how you feeling, man.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
It's a pleasure to be here. It's really a blessing.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Happy to have you. Man. Tell them who Kayden Mingo is.
For those who don't.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Know, Mingo, young kid from Long Island, Farmingville, New York.
Got two brothers, two loving great parents. There's the young
kid trying to be greater.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
What he does.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Amazing basketball player, combo guard, yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
I would say point guard.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
But you know, it's it's a blessing to really be noticed,
as you know, with the stars next to her name
and everything, and have my name continued to rise.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
And so you know, today is a very special day.
But Before we get into that, let's let's talk about
how you got into basketball and I love for basketball,
because basketball has changed, I'm sure for your pops, you know,
back in the day, you know, playing the part and
and that's how you got your skills up. Nowadays, it's
a lot of training and training and more training. So
let's let's talk about how you how you started your

(01:26):
love for basketball and what made you run and put
in the effort and time to do it.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
My pops never really played basketball. He was more of
a football player. So I ain't never getting none of
that from him.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Really. He always be in the gym with us and
help us athleticism athletics a little bit. And then uh,
when I was younger.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Big.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Jersey, but you know, and then when I was younger,
my parents always just had us, you know, with my
older brother because he played basketball he was growing up.
He was in high school when we was younger, and
I will always you know, me and my little brother
would be running around in the middle of the games
and stuff, playing on our own to varsity each other.
So I would really say, you know, just looking up
to him as a role model, that that's that's when

(02:16):
I wanted to play basketball.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
That's what I got it from.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
When you fall in love with it.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Though in love with it, just take it serious, probably
around middle school.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Around middle school, you know, seeing your name get out
there more and more and more people notice you, it
becomes something you, you know, begin to really have more
of a love for.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
I always wonder how you are you keep it from
feeling like a job, like when you are in a
position that you're in. You know you going to college.
I'm sure you got pro aspirations. How do you keep
it from feeling like work?

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Just just reminding yourself that you do fun. That's why,
that's why you started playing for fun. And it's it's
just a sport. It's not it's not who you are
or anything. It's just something you do.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
And what about the grades?

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Now?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
You know a lot of times your grades get you
don't really focus on school because you play basketball so much.
How your grades and how you making sure you all focused.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
My father's a principal, sop the principal. You don't play them, Nah,
don't play that.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
I've been on hon roll every quarter in high school,
so I would say I'm pretty solid with all that.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
You said something just not as powerful. You said, basketball
is just something you do. It's not who you are.
You know. I read a lot of doctor Wayne W.
Dyer The Power of Intention, and that's something that he
always says, you you are, not what you do. You know,
like a lot of us get caught up in that.
When did you learn that mentality?

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (03:37):
It's still something I work on, you know, because it
could become stressful, you know, it up with ups and downs.
But I would say I'm still working on it. But
that's what That's something my parents saw me. One of
my high school coaches always emphasized Coach Jay, you always
tells us that remind So I would say ninth grade
is when I got introduced to it.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
My parents always let me know about the concept of it.

Speaker 5 (03:59):
You know what players inspired you like coming up or
even right now? Like who are your biggest inspirations?

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Uh? Right now? NBA players, yes, NBA players, NBA players.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Uh or retired players.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Either.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
I was blessed enough to have Mellow in my circle
and play with Kayne since young, so I would say
he's told me a lot and he's took me under
his shoulder. And then right now, I like Tyres Maxie
a lot with Philly and uh, you know how he
operates and how he was able to, you know, at
such a young age, become one of the faces of
the programs.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
What do you like about Maxie's game?

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Everything he really scored, he passed, he played on or
off the ball.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
I think it's similar. It's similar to my name.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
You want co MVP. You mentioned Kyane, you want code
MVP at the ACES Hustling Hearts Classic along with Kyanne
winning that, Like, what was that like for you? What
did that mean to you?

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Uh? It meant a lot, you know with the ACES.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
Uh, with the history of how many players have came through,
and Uh, it was a good game. It was a
It was a good thing that we won the game
because it was real close or thought. And I really
appreciate them recognizing what I did and how I played
and congratulating me with that award.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Do you feel like it should have been a coin vv?
You feel like you just deserved it.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
All I felt like was good. Iane played well.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Was also Kyanne busting ass. It's crazy to think I
used to be taller than Kanye. He was never taller
and ye came out out your mind, he came It
was crazy about stuff.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
There was that twenty twenty four. How long ago was that?
Because you're about what like five.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Carring with fifteen probably fifteen fourteen, fifteen.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Seventeen, seventeen, sixteen years ago. You've never been that talk.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
He never had to go to the cabinets. That's crazy.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
What's your relationship like now?

Speaker 1 (05:46):
You know what?

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Yeah, we're cool. That's my guy, you know, real close
on and off the court. That's my dude.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
What advice is mellow give y'all?

Speaker 4 (05:55):
He just tells us to be ourselves and don't don't
change for anybody, and just stay confident through everything and
just be level headed.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Is New York full of distractions?

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Man?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
I feel like New York would be like very full
of distractions for young ball players like yourself.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Uh you could say, so, you know a lot of
different parties and different things going on and people trying to,
you know, get you and you start to get a
name a little bit. But I would say, uh, you
just gotta stay focused and keep doing.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Gotcha got to where you are.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
The beauty of it is it seems like you got
a strong circle. You know. I'm sure they keep you
grounded for sure.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Now you made the decision to say that you wanted
to announce what school you wanted to go here on
the Breakfast Club. What made you want to make that
decision to say I want to do it not necessarily
your conventional way, but to come up here and do
it on the breakfast Club. I mean, we appreciate it,
but I'm just curious what the reason was.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
The first it's never happened.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
That's one of the reasons that it never happened before.
You know, there's been celebrities up here with y'all. So
I was really blessed to have the opportunity. And you know,
it was just the idea that me and my agency
came up with and then we just made it work
from there.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
As soon as they asked me, I said, yeah, for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Your top finalists were Georgia, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and
wait for what is it about those schools that got
them to be your top four choices?

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Definitely. Definitely the relationship with the staff, I would say,
with all the people in those rooms, and you know
the type of people that they are, you know, having
conversations with them, you could get a little bit of
a sense of who they are and the fit with
the school opportunity ahead and uh, just feeling somewhere like

(07:39):
with those for schools, I feel like I could thrive
at anyone.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
And when you're sitting around with your circle, like when
you're talking about things that the school has, what's a
non negotiable for you? Like this school has to have
this for you to go mm hmm. The girls nah,
all of these girls know what I mean, the girls girls?

(08:04):
The difference between girls and the girls. I go with you, man, nowhere,
I gotta go, Okay, Uh, what's the question negible? What
school have to have?

Speaker 4 (08:23):
We never really talked about that, but I always just say, uh,
I feel like as far as the coaches go, I
feel like me as a family, me and us as
a family, we feel like we have to have somebody
in position and guiding me. That's a godfearing man.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
I do have a question.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
You know a lot of these players, like yourself go
to these colleges.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
And they want and done.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Is that what you're thinking right now? Is is that
what's on your mind?

Speaker 4 (08:50):
I would love to go on and done, but it's just,
you know, all God's time, however long it takes, or
even if I don't play in MBA, you know whatever, Just.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
What about the academic side? You know, you know what
you would want to study?

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I was thinking of finance and psychology.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
All right.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Well at the time is now, ladies and gentlemen, Caden
Mingo is about to decide and disclose what school he
wants to go to. Before you do that high school.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
The hats got all four of the hats did it
on TV?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
They got all that stuff right now, Well, Caden Mingo
is about to decide what college he is going to
take his talents to. It is between Georgia, Penn State,
Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Let's give the mike to Caden Mingo. What do you
think this big? Let's speak?

Speaker 6 (09:48):
Okay, Prince State, make sure you get all congratulations.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
What was it?

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Why?

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Of all the four school spend State? What was the
the side.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
In factor for you know?

Speaker 4 (10:13):
Just like we talked about, I felt like it was
the best fit, best opportunity, best all the play and
also the best relationship. But the coaches, especially Coach was
the head coach, and I just feel like this is
the best place I could thrive in the place I
can thrive the most.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
You got any partners there, like anybody that's already playing it.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
Already playing Yeah, no, not really. Mason Blackwood coming with
me though, that's my job. He played in New York
versus New York with me.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Okay, okay, you're gonna make some noise next year.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, yeah, we're going to try.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
You make sure you send us some jerseys and congratulations
for sure.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
That's a lot I love.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I don't think too far into the future. I know
that you got NBA aspirations, but you gotta go a
Penn State first.

Speaker 5 (10:52):
I got a friend that with the Penn State and
then when he played there, he went right to the NFL. Yeah,
Devons Steel, yep. So it's a great school.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Well, ladies and gentlemen. Kayden Mingo, if you haven't heard
his name, look him up. He's from Long Island, four
star guard Combo. He is going to Penn State next year,
and he sauld you support this brother.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
And all that, and do you just like you guys,
seem like you got a real stable situation. You got
your family, you got your girl. You're gonna be good.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
He got God, he said God.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Fit say that again. You got a white woman, now,
don't you're right?

Speaker 5 (11:24):
But just I'm just telling you, all right, do you
learn a lesson today?

Speaker 2 (11:30):
A couple I was good telling them the truth. Okay,
they're gonna be praying on you. I'm telling you.

Speaker 6 (11:36):
You know that.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
I know you're putting them I know his daddy putting
them on it. Listening to your father.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
We're happy for you.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Congratulations Jesus Christ, ladies and gentlemen, it's Caden Mingo. It's
