Speaker 1 (00:02):
I'm a homegirl that knows a little bit about everything
and everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
You know, if you don't lie about that? Right, Hey,
y'all's up.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
It's Lauren Rosa and this is the Latest with Lauren
de Rosa. This is your daily dig on all things
pop culture, entertainment, news, and all of the conversations that
shake the room.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Baby.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Now today, hopping right on into the latest because I
got some te tails for y'all. Okay, so it's like details,
but it's given the tea because I'm about to really
take y'all on into this story. So today there was
a story that broke. There were some documents that were filed. Giselle,
Brian and Robin Dixon of the Reasonably Shady podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
You guys know they.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Are our podcast cousins, which means they are also a
podcast here on the Black Effect Network, are being accused
of harassment by Eminem.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
By rapper Eminem, y'all are probably like, wait, what for.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Anybody who doesn't know the back of the story hearing
Eminem and real housewives of any sort in the same sentences,
like how did we even get here? Don't worry, y'all,
I got you, So listen Giselle Bryant and Robin Dixon
created their podcasts some years ago. They created their podcast
back in February. I'm sorry, they created their podcast back
(01:19):
in May of twenty twenty one when they created the
podcast Resonably Shady, And if you guys watched their show,
you understand that. Of course, the title of the podcast
is a playoff of how they get into things and
topics and you know, just their personalities and what they're
known for on the Real Houseworves of Atlanta or you know,
formerly Real hos Wives of Atlanta because Robin is alum
(01:44):
of Giselle is still actively on the show. But yeah,
I mean, if fits never in a million years when
I first saw that they launched this podcast, what I
think that Eminem would be like, hold on wait, what
uh uh? That shady that I saw mine? But it happened,
and I remember when this story broke, because what happened
(02:05):
was so they launched a podcast in May of twenty
twenty one. They then went on to file a trademark
application for the name reasonably Shady in February, following the
date that they launched. Now, when they went to go
and file this trademark Eminem opposed the trademark application in
February of twenty twenty three, and when he opposed it,
(02:27):
he argued that his brand would be damaged if the
ladies obtained the trademark because of the things that they
would be talking about. And he alleged, you know, there's
that thing that people always do when they try and
push back on a trademark application, where they talk about,
you know, people being confused, and the consumers would be confused.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
And he says.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Consumers who have known him by Slim, shady or Shady
since the nineties would be confused. He says he also
owns the trademark for shady for merchandise.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
You.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
So he's arguing that he's pushing back right now that
following month after So the month after March janiu Ver
March March twenty twenty three, after eminem pushback, Gasel Bryant
and Robin Dixon's attorney gave a statement to some outlets
and he said, Robin Dixon and Jasell Bryant deny any
(03:18):
likelihood of confusion between Eminem's trademarks and their reasonably Shady
Podcast trademark. We are prepared to defend any allegations against
them regarding their intellectual property. All right, so that is
the background on how we got here. Now, there's been
some back and forth since this. This has been ongoing
since twenty twenty three. At this point, there were conversations
(03:41):
about depositions. I know that Robin and Giselle were deposed
by Eminem's attorneys, But this has been I mean, in
my opinion, this has been the greatest publicity for their
podcast that anyone could ask for.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I mean, their podcast makes headlines.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
We talked about them literally this week in a previous
episode where they talked about kay Michelle potentially joining the
Real House was of Atlanta and kay Michelle then responded
to that and that picked up everywhere.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Right, But of course, these are.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Women who have a huge audience because of the platform
of you know, Housewives that they were on for as
long as you know, for as long as a lot
of people can remember Potomac.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
So you know, it's not like they need the.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Reach of the publicity moment, but it's a good one
if you're going to make one. So in the headlines today,
Eminem says that they're harassing him because after they were
deposed Giselle Bryant and Robin Dixon. Now it's Eminem's turn
to be deposed. They're asking for Eminem to be deposed
by their attorneys. So his attorneys and their attorneys are
(04:45):
going back and forth, or they have been going back
and forth. They're trying to figure out when he's going
to be deposed. Originally they had agreed to October twenty
ninth of this year for the position for Eminem, and
then things went haywire. They couldn't agree on the time.
You know, Giselle and Robin felt like Gizelle and Robin
felt like, you know, because Eminem's attorney and basically said,
(05:06):
look y'all want eleven am Eastern Standard time. He's asking
for two pm. It's very hard to get Eminem to
sit down for a deposition taken when you can get them,
is my advice to you. But if we need it,
And he also said, can we make sure that this is,
you know, less than two hours, because we made sure
you guys, deposition was less than two hours, but we'll
say as late as you need. They took that as
(05:28):
you basically like, you better be lucky we even sitting
down for this deposition, Like do you know who this is?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
This is Eminem girl. Okay, y'all better be lucky.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
We even given y'all the time we give y'all take,
take it or leave it, and they're saying, no, that's
not fair, that's not how these things work. So I
reached out to Gazelle and I called her on the
way here into the podcast, and I'm like, listen. And
when I called her, she was like, hello, because what
I call people? Because there's people are so used to
be calling being like, hey, such and such is happening.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
What's going on? You gotta statement?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
You know. She was a little bit apprehensive at first
when I called her, but me and her know each other.
We did a few black events together. But she was
just more so like what did I do?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Lauren? Like why are you calling?
Speaker 1 (06:10):
But I asked her she would speak to you guys
are low riders, just about what's going on. So y'all
can hear right from her because Eminem is accusing them
of harassment. So I'm like, who better to speak than
those in question, Giselle Bryant or Robin Dixon.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
So let's give Giselle a call. She knows we're calling.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Hey, Hi, Hi, Okay, so we're taping, so you're on
the podcast now the Latest with Laurena Rosa.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
You're here with my audience.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
I called them the Lowriders, and they're gonna be so excited.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
To hear from you great way.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Well, okay, so I just gave them some background on
everything that has been happening to catch them up. You know,
from the time you guys created the podcast to filing
for the trademark and Eminem's team pushing back on the trademark,
and you know, talking about this would confuse the audience
and it would damage his brand. But today the story
broke via US Weekly in page six that Eminem is
(07:14):
accusing you guys of harassment because there was a disagreement,
or not even a disagreement, but there was no agreement
to be reached on a time of the deposition that
he's supposed to sit down on.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Right.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
So thatstory his attorneys deposed Ropping and I separately, right,
And in doing that, they asked for the day, the
complete day, and you know when we finished is when
we finished. But they asked for the complete day, and
that is what we gave them, and in turn, that
(07:47):
is what we're asking for from him, he could only
come up with a two o'clock start time of the day, and.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
That's just not sufficient. So we're not harassing the man.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
We're just asking for what we were asked to do,
which was give the seven hours in the day a
nine to five situation.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
So he finally came up with I think a day
that he could sit I think at two o'clock, and
my attorney told his attorney that she.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Works until five, that is when she's done. And because
they said that, well they said, hey, we can find
people to work after hours to you know, if Eminem
were to go after hours in the deposition, we could
find people to work, you know, after hours.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
And my attorney.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Rightly so said, look, I don't work after hours, so no,
that's not going to work. And it's not unreasonable to
ask for nine ten o'clock start time, especially when he
said no, he wasn't going to be deposed for like
a year, so we had to depose his manager, Paul Rosenberg,
(09:04):
which we did, and then finally Patton and Tray said no,
you know, if Marshall Mathers is the person that is
listed that is opposing our trademark, then he should be.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Deposed, so we're not harassing him. We would just like
for this to.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Be done in the same frame that was done to
me and Robert.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
So his attorneys mentioned that there was also something mentioned
in the docs about you back and forth where his
attorneys said, oh, is there a way that Okay, so
here's a time, and I know you guys opposed a time,
but also they had actually asked if the deposition could
be two hours or less, because that's what the that's
the amount of time they took with you guys.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
But you're saying that you guys gave them a full day.
We gained them up.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
They asked for a full day, and so I took
a full day off.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Of my time, like I cleared my day for the deposition.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
It just so happened that his attorneys didn't have any
more questions to ask after we told them that. No,
we did not start name our podcast reasonably Shady after Eminel, so.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Like there's nothing more to discuss.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, my lawyer's position is like, look, she doesn't know.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Is he gonna talk slow?
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Is he going to have to take a million bathroom breaks?
Is he going to answer the question adequately? So it
is standard just to clear your schedule for the day
and give a seven seven hours.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And then there's the you know, the kind of like
to take it or leave it?
Speaker 1 (10:38):
I know you guys kind of felt like when they
changed when they suggested what they suggested about the time
as far as he's busy, if this is the time
you can get him, we suggest that you do it.
There was like a oh, we feel like you know,
they're saying we'll take it or leave it, and that's
not fair. How does like, so, what is the Patent
and Trademark Office saying to you guys after you guys
of course are opposing all of these things and are
(10:59):
kind of scene, you know, how this is playing out
where the availability you know from what you're saying, isn't
being made the same way, like have you heard from
the patterns rate Mark raffis yet?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
So it is with them now.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
But but my position on that is the taket to
leave it is crazy to me because that's not how
we did business with them. They asked for specific days,
we gave it to them. And for Eminem to say
he's so busy, Lauren.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
I have seven jobs.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I'm busy too, Sorry, but I cleared my schedule, and
so did Robin for this, for this whole situation and
the ticket of leave. It is even more crazy when
he filed the petition.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
We were minding our business.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
He is coming up against us, so we think that
if you're gonna come up.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Against our patent, our trademark, you would find the time
to be deposed. Very true, Very true.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
There at no point did he like him or his manager,
you know, Rosenberg, Like they never just reached out and said,
let's find like a happy medium here. Like this to
me is kind of like it's a very far stretch
between the two worlds.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
I not kind of kind of yes, we've been offered
something that's not.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Reasonable, okay, Monetary is okay. I My position is.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
We've gone this far. This is I don't know, we
in year two of this nonsense. We're gonna go to
the end of the road. But everything is now with
patent trade and they're gonna come back with I guess
their findings or their rulings or whatever.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
When you guys were offered, like when they tried to
offer I guess like it's kind of almost like a
settlement type of thing, like.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
A they want to say that I don't want to
say that they offer the settlement. I want to say
that there was some language of kind of like a
happy medium, so to speak, and.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
I wasn't happy and it wasn't medium.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Are you able to tell us what that hit? I'm
not Wait, first of all, you kih my nerd. I
wasn't happy and it wasn't medium. Are you wouldn't give
us any like what that was? Was it that you
guys couldn't do the podcast or shady would have to
be removed?
Speaker 3 (13:07):
Like?
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Are you able to.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Give us anything on like what it was that they
actually asked without telling us what they offered?
Speaker 3 (13:14):
I don't think legally I can say that. Okay, so,
but I will tell you when this is.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
All over for sure. Okay, got you?
Speaker 1 (13:20):
And then my final question is the eminem's attorney gave
a statement to an outlet and he says or no,
this is actually from the document.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
I'm sorry, I read that wrong.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
In the document they say refusal to cooperate and assistance
on following emotion over three hours start time difference prove
that their pursuit of this deposition is designed to harass.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Any response to that statement.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Totally, that's a stretch and if if it is designed
to harass, then I will say his lawyers harassed me
because again I my schedule for the day, because that
is what his attorney asked of us.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
So you can't ask me and Robin, two.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Very busy black women to do something that Eminem can
and will not do.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Got it? Well, thank you?
Speaker 1 (14:17):
And I mean we love reasonably Shady. So I hope
y'all figured this out because I don't know what else
to call y'all. Like I really I was sitting here thinking,
I'm like, well, what else would they be like? Because
it is very out you know, in the opening of
this podcast before I called you, I said, it's very
it's so unbringing for y'all with y'all personalities, the way
(14:37):
y'all cover the topics y'all talk about your personas on
the show, it's you know, the shade is there, but
y'all can be reasonable. So where else do you go
from here? Like, I just don't know what.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I don't know anyone that listens to the podcast that
knows about Robin and I that listens to Reasonably Shady,
that thought about Eminem in any capacity. So this is
not an issue like the pat and trademark of it all.
It's like no one thinks about eminem, no one thinks
about some shady and quite frankly, he didne stole shady
from the black community anyway.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
So you know, I don't.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Even understand why we have gone down this road, but
we gonna be reasonably shady, Lauren, don't you worry.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Okay, Okay, Well, thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Enjoy your Thanksgiving. I know you're probably in the kitchen
getting ready to cook. I'm out to head on home.
