We basically highlight people that have been nominated, people in
your community, a school teacher, a nurse, someone in your family,
someone who you think is doing a really great job
and needs to be acknowledged, and then we acknowledge them.
We go to them, we go to their place of work,
we surprise them, and we've been giving them cool things

Yeah, we acknowledge and we celebrate them, and we do
it usually at around this time on Friday mornings, and
it's been really cool for us because we go as
an entire show.

Our cars and we drive them and surprise the honoree.
And this week's a local legend is a really cool lady.
Her name is Brenda Baiez and she's a paraprofessional teacher
at the Whalen School in Revere. And we pulled up
to the Whalen School in Revere and we were all impressed.
It's a giant school and a beautiful school. And it's

really cool because she's nominated by somebody else who works
with her. And the person that nominated Brenda was Anna
Maria Spirity, And they all wait for us in the
lobby and you have to understand, Brenda has no idea
we're coming idea. So then she comes out and we
meet with her, and she's done so many cool things.
It's a good reason she's being nominated. She does a

lot of things. She runs a talent show, and you know,
she doesn't get any support from the administry, from the town,
from anybody, but she does it for the kids in
the school and.

Then puts up her own money as a.

Teacher by costumes and props.

Yeah, and trophies and accessories and prizes. She gives gift
cards to the top three finishers. So she's a really
really cool lady. And that's why Brenda Bayaz is our
local Legend this Friday.

So I love that the person that nominates the local Legend,
we have to, you know, communicate with them to set
up the surprise. So I love that, you know, you know,
they just they're full of anxiety, you know, as we're
coming up, and then we get there and they're nervous
and they're waiting to surprise the local legend happens every time.
It's really cool to watch. But my favorite part about

in TVT.

I definitely damaged that guy. He got real shy at

a surprise concert. We announced it the last minute on
the air. You were there, and he practiced this Purple
Rain show in Boston for the first time.

On a tiny stage and a tiny venue at the
time Avalon.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we worked with jelly Bean. I
mean I worked and I worked with Peter Vandros. Who
changed for jelly Bean was I worked a little John
Snoop Cuba, very closer to work with Cube.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
But jelly Bean was.
Speaker 9 (27:03):
Jelly Bean was. He was fun and jelly Bean was
almost like an honorary bos Stone in I remember one
time I signed jelly Bean to Atlantic Records and we
were at a convention, and I have to be careful
how I say the simony. We're at a convention at
the Winter Music Conference, and this had to be nineteen
ninety two or three, probably nineteen ninety show ninety three,

and jelly Bean was hanging out and all the Hispanic kids,
they were idolized them, especially the DJs. It was jelly
Bean before David Gwetta. People don't understand. Before Gweta and Aoki,
jelly Bean was the very first celebrity DJ.

Jelly Bean the guy, Yeah.
Speaker 9 (27:43):
John j He's just a great guy. So we're at
the convention and we're walking around and it's you know,
it's hot, beautiful bikinis and everybody's got there a great
crushow the babysuits on and they're walking around and a
kid comes up to JB and says to jelly Bean,
I'm mister beneath PLS comic Jolly Bean. He said, can
I give you some advice how I can be as big?

What did you do to become as big as you are?
And you know, I'd like some advice and said He
looked at him in the face and he said, get
laid a lot.

Okay, walked away from him, words slip by a good one, Joe.
We got to talk about the book.

Okay, you were probably the number one disco DJ of
the disco era, and now you've got a book. Tell
people very quickly before we run out of time, what's
the book about?
Speaker 9 (28:33):
The boy? The Boston Hustle is the true story of
disco from nineteen seventy two to nineteen seventy five in
the Boston market. It just shows that people think of
disco that they co ad Sutaro fifty four. It wasn't
like that it would dive bars that would just put
sound system and mirrored balls, and it was just regular
people that went to the disco, and we went. When
we got to the disco, they decayed livery came stars
(28:55):
and it was a close knit family and I tell
the story about how the companies could not handle the
independent success of black artists at the disco because they
had no control over them, and they closed us down
with disco demolition in July of nineteen seventy nine. It
(29:15):
was a bit spiracy between the record companies and the
rock jock named Steve Dowell. I wrote the real story.
Everyone likes disco stories. It's always about fifty four.

Where the velvet rope kept you? Where the velvet rope
kept you? Well, Billy yea, And back in the day,
the velvet rope was a welcoming sign. That's what it was.

They wanted you to think it was too crowded to
get in. You walked in, and when you finally got in,
it was empty, right.

I know that night exactly because we had met all

came to the club and you were in a regular
people would know that this is your first time here. Yeah,
welcome to Cachet, have a wonderful time. And that's how
it was. Once you got in there, you are a
family and there were no poses. We were all just regularly.

she doesn't get any support from the administry, from the town,
from anybody, but she does it for the kids in

I grew up to get their first grade. We're like
childhood childhood buddies, and we both grew up basically on
the railroad track. So Joey, which one of us was
closer to the tracks? I was within twenty feet.

I was literally literally on it. There was a tribute
with the tracks. Our house was literally on the track,
up next to the tracks. I don't know if I
told you story. There was a barbershop called Mimi's.

That was literally right on the railroad tracks. There were
three bobbers no waiting. You get their haircuts one, two
or three? You know what I mean. Number three was
that Korean haircut. But they just took off the side
of your hair. My mother is sinking the feet and
every time I came home with that haircut. Okay, John Loan,
but wait a second. When that train went by that
that train went by that barber shop and they were

cutting there. All the barbers were backed off at once
because you could lose an air and know what I'm saying, Yeah,
you did your haircut.

Because there was a rumbling in the in the in
the barbershop. Yeah, so what of the were you on
a pink bow tie?

So one of the odds. Joey and I both ended
up radio. When Joey at one point, you ended up
in the record industry. Were you working for Sony Music?
Speaker 9 (25:05):
I was. I I started out with one is, I
went to with my My three biggest jobs in the record industry,
excuse me, were one Atlantic and I worked at Priority
in TVT.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
Record Those are big, Yes, So give us an idea
of some of the artists that we would recognize that
you actually worked with.
Speaker 9 (25:25):
Prince Prince, you're.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Going to start there.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
Yeah, I started Star with Friends. I mean that was
really the first one in nineteen late seventy nine, just
before I came to Chess. As a matter of time,
just before I came to Chess. Actually, yeah, before I
met him, I was on clit losing cocaine. So I
kissed him on the lips when I met him, So
I definitely damaged that guy. He got real shy at
he's been outgoing down until we met me. No but Billy,
(25:51):
no times, no times? Oh wow, came Italian. I just
came right of Italian.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Okay, no time, that's okay.
Speaker 9 (25:57):
Then did jump back his eyes like saucers.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
It was life changing for Brits.
Speaker 9 (26:05):
Did you ever go to gamage that kid? Did you
ever missed him for life?

Did you ever go to his recording studio?

I never made sure recording scree. I honored him a
couple of times after that. He actually wanted to try
I'll do a test run for Purple Rain. He chose
Boston to do it because Boston had such a mixed market.
He loved the fans, and we did it at Avalon.
He called me up at that time they had just
left Kiss. I was working for an independent promoter and

his people got in touch with me and we did
a surprise concert. We announced it the last minute on
the air. You were there, and he practiced this Purple
Rain show in Boston for the first time.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
On a tiny stage and a tiny venue at the
time Avalon.
Speaker 9 (26:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we worked with jelly Bean. I
mean I worked and I worked with Peter Vandros. Who
changed for jelly Bean was I worked a little John
Snoop Cuba, very closer to work with Cube.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
But jelly Bean was.
Speaker 9 (27:03):
Jelly Bean was. He was fun and jelly Bean was
almost like an honorary bos Stone in I remember one
time I signed jelly Bean to Atlantic Records and we
were at a convention, and I have to be careful
how I say the simony. We're at a convention at
the Winter Music Conference, and this had to be nineteen
ninety two or three, probably nineteen ninety show ninety three,
(27:25):
and jelly Bean was hanging out and all the Hispanic kids,
they were idolized them, especially the DJs. It was jelly
Bean before David Gwetta. People don't understand. Before Gweta and Aoki,
jelly Bean was the very first celebrity DJ.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Jelly Bean the guy, Yeah.
Speaker 9 (27:43):
John j He's just a great guy. So we're at
the convention and we're walking around and it's you know,
it's hot, beautiful bikinis and everybody's got there a great
crushow the babysuits on and they're walking around and a
kid comes up to JB and says to jelly Bean,
I'm mister beneath PLS comic Jolly Bean. He said, can
I give you some advice how I can be as big?
(28:05):
What did you do to become as big as you are?
And you know, I'd like some advice and said He
looked at him in the face and he said, get
laid a lot.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Okay, walked away from him, words slip by a good one, Joe.
We got to talk about the book.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Okay, you were probably the number one disco DJ of
the disco era, and now you've got a book. Tell
people very quickly before we run out of time, what's
the book about?
Speaker 9 (28:33):
The boy? The Boston Hustle is the true story of
disco from nineteen seventy two to nineteen seventy five in
the Boston market. It just shows that people think of
disco that they co ad Sutaro fifty four. It wasn't
like that it would dive bars that would just put
sound system and mirrored balls, and it was just regular
people that went to the disco, and we went. When
we got to the disco, they decayed livery came stars
(28:55):
and it was a close knit family and I tell
the story about how the companies could not handle the
independent success of black artists at the disco because they
had no control over them, and they closed us down
with disco demolition in July of nineteen seventy nine. It
(29:15):
was a bit spiracy between the record companies and the
rock jock named Steve Dowell. I wrote the real story.
Everyone likes disco stories. It's always about fifty four.
Speaker 6 (29:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (29:25):
Where the velvet rope kept you? Where the velvet rope
kept you? Well, Billy yea, And back in the day,
the velvet rope was a welcoming sign. That's what it was.
And that's you know, Bill was.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Part of it, the velvet rope.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
They wanted you to think it was too crowded to
get in. You walked in, and when you finally got in,
it was empty, right.
Speaker 9 (29:43):
I know that night exactly because we had met all
of our regulars, all gone in. And then if you
came to the club and you were in a regular
people would know that this is your first time here. Yeah,
welcome to Cachet, have a wonderful time. And that's how
it was. Once you got in there, you are a
family and there were no poses. We were all just regularly.

How you want to do is dance?

The other year it was where else are we going
to get that music? It didn't hit the radio until
like seventy six, and really didn't hit the radio in
Boston until Tu Went Away came out in seventy nine.
