Welcome to two of Kentucky Sports Radio present it by
Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Tom Hart sitting in for Matt Jones' final go round
in this guest hosting spot, which has been an absolute
blast throughout the summer, even though I took more days
off than Shannon over the course of my required time.
Drew and Ryan and Mario are in Lexington, Shannon is
in is in Louisville. We just had Tim Reblay from
the Secret Service on it. I think that the feedback
(01:29):
is really I don't know, it's kind of impressive given
some of the details that he shared, especially the agents.
I couldn't tell if he was saying that Secret Service
agents or local agents were supposed to be on the roof,
but quote, it was too hot, So those guys bailed
on that assignment who nearly got Trump killed. Too hot?
Old true, a little too hot. Those chicken nuggets are
(01:52):
gonna get hot. What else did you get with the
Tyson Foods gift bag that we, by the way, shout
out to Tyson Foods, like, oh, at product place it
too like we're talking about the company right now. You
got a cooler?
Speaker 6 (02:03):
I would actually say, not shout out to them. I
would like to send this back. Uh, this cooler is worthless.
It's got an Arkansas logo on it. Don't need that either.
Ryan Lemon here actually wants to eat the nuggets. I'm
not gonna let him. We have to draw the line somewhere.
I'm offended. This feels like a declaration of war, to
be honest.
Speaker 7 (02:20):
Yeah, when are we gonna start sending them stuff?
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Sending them some KFC back.
Speaker 6 (02:25):
No, we're not pin pals, We're not. We're not gonna
engage in this behavior. We're gonna send them their trash
right back where it came from Springfield, Arkansas. And we
want to be left alone. They keep saying, Kentucky fans
are obsessed with them. We don't think about them, but
we have gigantic packages showing up at our doorstep.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
I remember Francis got Key writing about the time that
the Nuggets arrived and how that was the declaration of war.
It was a great song, and he ended up writing,
but is it you feel like this is from the
corporation itself or an individual who's.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Setting up Oh no, it's got the it's got the
address on there. I thought, because we do have some
Tyson plants in western Kentucky. I thought maybe some Kentucky
people just sending it over keeping it in the blue grass.
But no, this is this is straight out of Tyson
Headquarters in Arkansas.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
I like, by the way that we're glossing over that
this is essentially pig shaped chicken that we got here,
right the razorback.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Nuggets called are they called?
Speaker 6 (03:26):
They say, woo pig suy at the top. Almost vomited
just reading that. Uh yeah, fully cooked bread and shaped
chicken patties, chicken shaped like pigs.
Speaker 8 (03:39):
That's what everybody wants to eat.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, I feel like you're more offended about the wo
pig nuggets than you were when you got punched in
the chest.
Speaker 8 (03:48):
I am, I'm actually a lot more offended.
Speaker 7 (03:51):
How do you feel, Drew? How how does the chest feeling today?
Speaker 6 (03:54):
I'm a little distracted by this new active war. This
is a busy week. We're just getting h on sided
left and right here next to me, Like, do you
think John cal Perry sent them? Do you think cal
sent himself? Do you think cal misses us? So that's
what this is. He's wanting us to busy.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
He's signing five star point guards.
Speaker 8 (04:11):
He is working, man, he's busy doing that here too.
You know, I could see him.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
They're sitting in their development, meaning like, hey, make sure
you send some of these to my great friends at
ks are live during the show, send him some razorback
nuggets with my love.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
If it's wings day here, we have our own weeks, this, this, this, here,
we have plenty of wings that are.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
If Cal wants to call in and and either take
credit for it or explain himself, he's welcome to This
would be the time to do it before man comes
back in town.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
True, yeah, he ain't doing it when match here.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Know that that.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Was another possible suspect we thought you might have on
the show today because you didn't tell us who it
was with all, maybe come on.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah, you know, I thought about sending out the ass,
but then I figured we're going to talk about his
Blu pig nuggets. So is that a good usage of
his time? Mario, I've been so go ahead.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Right well, before we get off your social secret service guy.
I always felt like secret service guys were like James Bond,
like Double O seven guys, you know, always in the
background wearing black suits, black sungrasses, hat hands kind of
you know, tucked into their their their vests. It's always
kind of like their secret secret serves like James Bond
(05:21):
smooth smooth. Yeah, is your friend like that?
Speaker 8 (05:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, but they are. I think they're more normal. I
mean they're as normal as they can be for someone
who has agreed via the Constitution to take a bullet
for another person, right, I mean, that's that is not
normal behavior. But he is incredibly committed. I remember, you know,
when we were in school, he would go for a
(05:50):
run and I'd be going for a beer and he'd
be going for a run and we'd say, Tim, where
are you running today? And he'd say, yeah, I'm not
sure yet. Well what do I mean, Like most people
who go for a run, especially Nowada agent putting your
Apple watch, you know, I'm gonna run five miles and
I want to do it in this amount of time.
I'm gonna run ten whatever. Now here's what he would do.
It's say, I'm going to run that direction until I
(06:13):
get tired and I feel like I can't run any farther,
and then I'm gonna run back and that would be
his run for the day, like it was just man.
And he was also a Division one wrestler, so that's
that's like next level stuff too.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
I don't think he got into this, but when you
knew him in college and did he know like a
secret service is what he wanted to do, and like
obviously he running that much. He wanted something in that
kind of career line, But at that point was he
thinking that part.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yeah, he knew he was going into law enforcement. I
think secret Service was a goal and presidential detail is like,
all right, this is this is the cream of the crop.
This's as big as you can get. But you don't
know if you can make it there. Right, There's so
many steps you gotta go to. And I've talked to
him a nauseum about that job because it's just fascinating.
And he had said previously that one of the coolest
(06:58):
things of being in the Secret Service, like one of
the big thrills that you get on a semi regular basis,
is you know, when you're with the president and Marine
one comes into land, I think on the south lawn.
I think the south lawn is red Marine one lanes.
I couldn't be run. That's a helicopter and they come
in and there's always three of them, and as they
fly over DC, they kind of do this leap frog
(07:21):
thing where the you know, the guy in the back
goes to the front and they play this game so
as counter maneuvers. So if there is a threat, A,
you don't know which of the three choppers that the
president is on, and B they're constantly shuffling. And he said,
you know whether or not, and like you're sitting there,
so you know whether or not the president is on
(07:42):
your chopper or not. Yet there's still this thrill because
the way it would go down is the first chopper
would approach the lawn and if the President's not on it,
then they pull up last second and peel over the
rooftops in DC and they're like, it's as close as
you can get. I mean it is. It is Hollywood,
Like Hollywood's not even real compared to what these guys
do every day. So I just think that job is fascinating,
(08:04):
maybe maybe more so than nuggets. All right, Mario, your
job has like taken a leap this summer with your
time around lat Familia. Right, So when did you first
kind of feel ingrained with those guys after following them
and being around the program.
Speaker 9 (08:20):
I would say, like some of our relationships with the guys,
some of my relationships with the guys on a lot
of familiar really comes from my podcast having some of
those guys on my podcast and having giving them the
platform to tell their stories.
Speaker 7 (08:32):
That was the main thing with that, and then you know,
it just develops.
Speaker 9 (08:36):
You know, every time I go to an event, you know,
I meet you know, more members of the Lave Familiar squad.
And for me, it's like these are players that I've
grown up watching, you know, Nate Cistina that I went
to college with Nate Cistina, so I remember him playing
and and and and Harrison Twins and Tyler Ewlsz. So
you know, I would say, you know, our relationship, you
know with me and lave Familiar is just it's growing.
(08:58):
And like I said, I'm a fan, Like I'm really
just a big fan that that's getting the you know,
sit court side and get all this great content and
go from there.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Tommy's being modest. When Mario's in the building, they all
walk up to him, they walk past me and everyone else.
Another day, I look up and he's just talking to
Chris Paul. I'm like, you you go from talking to
Ryan Lemon in the morning to sitting with Chris Paul
at night.
Speaker 8 (09:20):
I mean, Mario has become quite the star around here.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
I would say that there's a cop to be made.
Ryan to Chris Paul would be like nine on Nuggets
a secret service.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
That's fair.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
There's a common theme. I think what's really cool about
your podcast though, is it either your personality or your
approach or combination of both. Is getting these dudes to
open up, right, like getting them comfortable where they share
stuff that they in some cases have never shared.
Speaker 7 (09:49):
Them, never done.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
What's the coolest thing that you've learned?
Speaker 9 (09:52):
Really that everybody's story is different. That's probably the coolest
thing that I've learned. You know, me interviewing somebody, I
understand that, you know, the person is sitting across from
me has a totally different personality than the last person
I interviewed. So, you know, really the key for me
is just making them comfortable. I want to make everybody comfortable.
That way we can get stories out and allow these guys,
(10:13):
you know, women as well, to tell their stories and
not feel like, you know, that their their whole they
have to hold something back or whatever the case may be.
Speaker 7 (10:21):
And I think, you know, my personality fits with it.
Speaker 9 (10:23):
You know, I just let them kind of have you know,
take over the platform, I sit down and ask the questions.
It's not about me, it's about them, and I really
go from there and it's it's an overall it's a
blasphemy something that I love to do on the side,
and you know, like I said, it's built may be
built remarkable relationships, you know, with with guys on the
Live Familiar Squad and everywhere else as well.
Speaker 8 (10:44):
He just had Willie cally Stan. I think that was
a big one.
Speaker 7 (10:46):
Yeah, Willie huge, that was a huge one.
Speaker 8 (10:49):
You know.
Speaker 9 (10:49):
He he talked about rehabit, which kind of got me
off guard because I wasn't expecting that, you know, you know,
him just you know, letting it loose on my platform.
But you know, I'm just really honored to have opportunity
to sit across some guys like that and let them
tell this story and me be a fan.
Speaker 7 (11:04):
I like to think of myself as just a fan.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
I don't know if you know this. Willi college Stein
played high school football.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
No he didn't.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yes, you have asked him about growing up in the Latha,
Kansas and playing high school football. They could have been
a big thing. Drew, I'm gonna draw another comp You
remember when the world shut down due to COVID. And
when we were in Nashville for the SEC tournament, and
I told everybody that day that day to buy stock
(11:31):
and what zoom zoom by stocking.
Speaker 8 (11:34):
I've never even heard of zoom in that moment.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
I hadn't either. I didn't know what zoom was. And
Tom said to buy stock in it. Why didn't that
take his advice?
Speaker 3 (11:42):
We'd be what set, Why didn't I take my advice?
I'd be saying I didn't. I didn't even do it?
By stock and Mario like, this guy is going to
be a superstar. This guy's on a rocket show.
Speaker 7 (11:53):
Yeah, I appreciate that.
Speaker 9 (11:54):
Thank you to where we get you on the podcast.
That's the That's the real question.
Speaker 7 (11:58):
Tom.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Anytime, anytime I think I think we might be there,
I don't know this. I guess I might be there
for the home opener. We got miss on Saturday night, right,
I mean that's our time slot. We should be there.
We can do a couple of days earlier, we can
hang Here's the thing. A lot of familiar is playing
(12:21):
Friday in Philly, isn't right? They've got the state team? Yes,
what's Ohio state team named the Buck Nuts.
Speaker 8 (12:28):
Carmen's Crew.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Carmon featuring Jared Jared Sollinger, a former UK villain who
is at Freedom Hall.
Speaker 9 (12:39):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (12:40):
UK fans were already talking a little trash before they'd
already gotten past the bill, looking ahead to Carmen's Crew.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Who else was recognizable on that team In.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
The past, They've had a lot of uh former buck
Eyes that Kentucky played in that Elite A game.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
This year they had all the guys from that modes.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Tom Tom kind of comes for all of us, and
I think those guys have moved on. Sollinger is the
big name, uh the rest. I mean it's he's the name,
to be honest. Got a lot of guys that are
still playing internationally. A lot of them aren't even Ohio
State anymore. You got Boston College, U T Arlington, East
Tennessee State. So this team was formed as all former
buck Eys, but I think as they've gotten older, that's
kind of become more. Other teams are those games at
(13:18):
the Palestra. We're a Drexel place. I can't think of
the name of that Doxel place.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
By the way, people don't know this, it's actually the
school's not named Drexel. It's name for Doctor Exel, who
was a villain back in the twenties. Doctor Exel. Ryan,
you kind of believe that, don't you. Bryan.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
I believed as soon as you came out of your mouth,
like really before the door, and that.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Sounds like a villain. I've got a villain in my sights.
I'm gonna share it with you. I had a terrible
customer service experience and I'm gonna go straight marrin uh
when we return. But we also need to do some drops, right,
we got any drops we want to do before we
go to break.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
A live read?
Speaker 10 (13:59):
Yes, I'll do one for you.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
You know, every member of the Secret Service, they've got
their suit and they got to have their sunglasses. And
you can get some really good sunglasses at Shady Rays.
They're a Kentucky independent, American owned company.
Speaker 8 (14:11):
Start it right here.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
They have premium polarized shades for every activity and you
can use the promo code KSR for fifty percent off
two or more pair in store at their flagship location
at the Summit at Fritz Barm or online at Shady
rays dot com. They have over two hundred and fifty
thousand and five star reviews, Tom, that's a lot of
five stars. Check them out at Shady rays dot com.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
That's a lot of five stars. Drew cal signed a
five star point guard last week. I don't know if
you know that Kentucky.
Speaker 8 (14:36):
Sports raised a lot of those here, Tom, he saw
a lot of those here.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
All right, enjoy the nuggets. We got more coming your way.
I'm gonna rant after this on Kentucky Sports Radio. Come on, Drew,
get it?
Speaker 8 (14:52):
What's up? Are you not singing a right?
Speaker 3 (14:55):
No?
Speaker 8 (14:55):
If they're not seeing it?
Speaker 6 (14:56):
Was?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Okay? All right, Tom Hart, sitting in from my final
day on KSR. Maybe ever, I guess I had a
moment last night. You guys, you know the Reddit thread
which am I? The am I? The what am I?
The am I?
Speaker 7 (15:10):
Or whatever it is?
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Yeah, all right, so you tell me if I had
a right to be perturbed by this. Last night I
ordered pizza for the family and I noticed and I
don't want to call out the company by name, but
it rhymes with hello, hushroom, so I don't. Yeah, I
love I love the pizza. The customer service could go
a long way, okay, So as I'm ordering the pizza,
(15:31):
it gives you an opportunity to put in a tip
online now to me right off the bat. And I
worked in the hospitality industry for a long time. I
worked in the restaurant industry. Like I am all about tips.
I over tipped ninety nine percent of the time. But
it's hard to present the tip before you've been presented
with service. Right, Like me, I got cash in hand.
(15:53):
I show up. Everything was great, Boom, you're getting cash.
I'd rather not put out my car, but I do
it anyway, and I put it on the card. And
my assumption is I'm gonna get good service. I show up.
There's a sign that says take out orders here, right,
you go straight up to the guy. There's no confusion.
And so you're bothering a waitress, so you're bothering the bartender,
(16:14):
or you're bothering the kitchen. Now, no, pick him up
right here? Great, go up. My guy is on his
cell phone and can't be bothered to look up. And
I stand in front of him for a few minutes.
Not a few minutes, obviously, but you know whatever. Finally
looks up. Hey, yeah, here's my name. I'm picking up
a pizza. Oh okay, no problem. He goes over to
check on it. He comes back and he's like, not
(16:35):
ready yet. It's gonna be four minutes, max, Perfect, Fine,
no problem. I sit down on the stool like right
in front of the guy, and I start watching beach volleyball.
Right by the way, Chase Budinger was a mcdonald'sll American
at basketball. Now he's playing beach balls.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Playing beach volleyball now, yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yeah, unbelievable. Anyway, So I'm watching beach volleyball, I'm watching
like men's water polo, and I realize I'm low in
the Olympics, like I am just dialed in. It's been
maybe fifteen minutes. I turned back to the guy and
I'm kind of like, yo, four minutes was a while ago, right,
And he just kind of stares at me. So I
(17:13):
walk over to where the counter is for the kitchen
and I said, hey, I carry out order for Tom,
and the guy goes, oh, yeah, that's right here. It
had been ready for eleven minutes. Am I right to
be bothered by the fact that he had just been
sitting there, that he didn't do his job and I
had already tipped on top of that, or Am I
just being like an old man yelling at the clouds.
Speaker 6 (17:34):
No, No, not at all, especially if he gave you
a tome wine, Tom wind aside, if it's just sitting
there and he couldn't be bothered to go pick it
up and hand it to you, I'm completely on your side.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
He don't, Mario, you're a different generation, Like, how do
you feel about this? Now?
Speaker 7 (17:49):
I'm on your side. Tom.
Speaker 9 (17:50):
That's bad customer service right there. You can't have that.
I'm sorry you had to tip before. I'm not a
big tippers.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Twenty years old.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
If you order a pizza online and it says fill
out the tip ten percent, fifty percent, other, you're going
other zero's across the board.
Speaker 9 (18:12):
I'm probably going depends on the mood i'm in, Tom,
I'll probably go ten percent if I'm feeling generous.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
I'm not.
Speaker 9 (18:20):
I'm not a big fan of the delivery fee. You know,
when you order online, they give you a delivery fee
and then you add the tip. I'm not a big
fan of both of those. I just say that the
delivery t is the tip. The delivery fee is the tip. So,
like I said, I'm not a big tipper, so I'll
probably go ten percent.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
On that, Okay, I'm with you, like you're to me.
You're not really providing a service if you're just walking
over to get the pizza and handing it to me.
You're not waiting on me when I'm sitting at a table, right,
I'm not relying on you to get refills.
Speaker 7 (18:50):
It's takeout.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
It's takeout. Yeah. No.
Speaker 6 (18:53):
But your big point you you gave him money ahead
of time to give you good service. You said you
gave him a good tip. I mean you've already pre
paid for him to turn around and grab that pizza,
which he could not be bothered to do.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
He had too much going on. I mean he was
on Instagram, right, I mean he was checking out. I
don't know what he was checking out.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Some places are getting really bold. By the way, Tom
on tipping, You know, it used to be ten, fifteen twenty,
then it was fifteen, eighteen twenty. Now like twenty is
the bottom line. Now it's like twenty twenty five thirty
fifty percent tips you.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
For me to hand you my bank account, Like.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
What, I don't mind that. If it's like a waitress
comes up to you and she hands you the thing
and you have a chance to fill out the tip,
like you've provided a service. What really bothers me is
like you're at the airport and you buy a bottle
of water or a soda or candy bar. Before you
get on you they want to tip and they spin
the thing around and they point to the tip. What
(19:46):
are you talking about? I was the one that went
and got it off the thing and brought it to you.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Amen, I've talked about this and they have the same
thing at Great American Ballpark. You go there watch a
Reds game, you want to go get some nachos, It's
already there. You pick it up. They don't give it
to you. You you have to go select your water, whatever
you want to eat. You don't even you have to
ring up yourself and they still ask for a tip.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Now, the dude who brings me beer in my seat,
I'm tipping. Sure he's gonna get is the first beer
because then he's gonna come find me when I'm ready
for the second beer, and then he's gonna make money
on me that day, not if I'm walking all the
way up there to get it myself. Come on, Ryan,
I blame you.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Well, you know we're saying it now. And drive throughs
like you go through McDonald's drive through and you use
your credit card. They handing the that's got the buttons
on it, and they're staring right at you, like a
McDonald's really drive through. This is now becoming a thing.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
Drive through tips, yep, drive I've got another.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
I've got another issue with McDonald's because the last time
I stopped there and went through the drive through, it
was like a Sunday night. I was coming back from
an event. I think it was coming back from an
Andy Kennedy U A B basketball game, and I stopped
the one at Alabama and I go through the drive
through and I placed my order and they said to me, oh,
are you door Dash? I go, no, I'm not door Dash.
(21:04):
They go, oh, we're only open for DoorDash. What you're
a drive through? You have the food ready, all you
have to do is run my credit card and I
can't get it. So what do you want me to
park and order door Dash and pay three dollars and
fifty cents for that guy to come pick it up
and walk it over to my window.
Speaker 8 (21:21):
Yeah? Really, I had a moment recently. I won't name
the place because I really like it, but do the.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Rhyming thing, do the rhyming thing. They'd be fun.
Speaker 8 (21:29):
Just there there. I'll probably be there in the next
couple of days. I better not. I really liked them.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
It was just a bad one rogue employee. But I'm
at a spot with where you're supposed to get service
and they weren't helping me, helping other people. So I
got up and went to the bar and I was like,
I just want to make sure I'm in an area
that has a server. I don't mind coming up here,
and they're like, no, of course, you have a server,
you don't have.
Speaker 8 (21:49):
To come up here.
Speaker 6 (21:50):
So then a little bit later I needed something just
absolutely was happening. So I walked back up to the
bar and ordered sit back down, carry it over myself,
and I still would have tipped I'm never gonna stiff anyone.
But she came over and brought the iPad at the
end and said it in front of me, and it
was almost like her head was on my shoulder leaning
over to watch because I was gonna hit other and
not do twenty twenty two or twenty five, which were
(22:10):
the options. She was so into the iPad watching me
type the number in sign. I was like, this is
the most you've done around me all night, and I
had to I had to take it down to I
think it did fifteen or eighteen percent right there in
front of her. But I mean it was like there
was so much pressure with her staring at me of
what I was gonna tip.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Did you go over your shoulder and say, you know,
I went and got my last two beers at the bar?
I saw right, you saw me do that? Like did
you mention that? Like as not to be a jerk,
but just says so she understood why she wasn't.
Speaker 8 (22:40):
I should have.
Speaker 6 (22:40):
I'm a bit of a softy when it comes to
those moments. I should I should have done more, because
it was a little ridiculous that we just had to
keep getting up from our table. We would have set
at the bar if we just if we need to
do that. But it was more so the I'm going
to sit here and stare at what you're writing down, man,
was I thought it was a little bit.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
That's when you stare him right back in the eye
and make it really uncome before him, you know, like,
here's your fifteen deal with it.
Speaker 6 (23:04):
Wow, it's the pressure you get nervous if they're just
looking over you like, yeah, you'll get it.
Speaker 8 (23:10):
You'll see what it is when I'll leave the place.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
And they know, they know who you are. But I
know that Drews is softy because he got He just
got punched the other night. He just got punched, and
he got punched by a way just trying to get
a better tip KSR continues After.
Speaker 7 (23:25):
This, TJ.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
He'll make them pay.
Speaker 5 (23:30):
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Here's Matt Jones, Ryan, come on, everybody in the club
hitting tipsy everybody.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
It's everybody, everybody, everybody.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
I really wish people could hear the music. Uh. Tom
Hart sitting in for Matt Jones. Guys, I've been fascinating
by the uh by the Olympics. Are you guys familiar
with pommel horse guy?
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Pommel horse guy?
Speaker 3 (23:57):
I have pommel horse guy. Okay, the men's Olympic team
two nights ago secured I think like their first ever medal.
I think they got a bronze and it came down
to the final event of the night. And they have
a specialist olympian. His name is Steven. Something I can't
pronounce his last name. He is got glasses. He kind
(24:18):
of looks like he reminds me of that former Georgia
kicker Rodrigo blankenshep remember the classes. This guy was a
gymnast at Penn State. He's some sort of scientist slash
engineer in real life when he's not on the Olympic team.
And he qualified for the team just to do the
pommel horse. And he's cross eyed. So he makes his
(24:39):
way to the pommel horse. He makes some adjustments to
the equipment and then he takes off his glasses and
he hands him to a coach and you're like, this
guy can't see without his glasses. And he goes from
Clark Kent to Superman and he turns in this incredible
pommel horse performance and I mean he is Biden. Look,
(25:00):
he is the nerdiest nerd who has ever nerded ever
and he secures the Olympic medal for the men's gymnastics team.
It is amazing. I am shocked, Like, do you guys
not on televisions? How do you not see this?
Speaker 6 (25:13):
I know you're talking about now He's there was something
about him solving a Rubik's cub in like ten seconds
before he went out there too, so adding to his
his his nerddom, that's a pretty impressive feed. I think
he had done it right before going out there for
the palmer horse.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Are are we sure this nerd guy is not our
Matt Jones? Matt has been gone? Is it not Matt?
Speaker 4 (25:36):
That?
Speaker 6 (25:37):
I think this guy might have accomplished a little more
than Matt could accomplish on the pommel horse. But uh,
there are some similarities in the glasses.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
I see that if he would have come out wearing
like a Sacramento Kings hoodie, then I would have perhaps
given it more value.
Speaker 8 (25:53):
Stories like his or why I like the Olympics.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
I mean, with all due respect to Lebron and Kevin Durant,
I'm excited to watch them today, but I've seen them
a million times. I'll learning more about Steven with the glasses.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
The Derrick Henry of Rugby we had yesterday that went
end to end on the field. That's why the Olympics
is so fun to me because some of these so
many of these people are unknown.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
But uh, old medal fencer from Lexington, Who's yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Lee Keith for two second gold medal for the dumb
bar grad.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Here's the problem with it, though, Like we get fascinated
and my household, like my wife, my daughters, they are
fascinated with the Olympics, and we'll be watching primetime Olympics
even though we know that all of this stuff ended
hours before, because of the way it's packaged and the
stories they tell and get you tied into it. Like
(26:43):
I was watching the Three on three. As I said yesterday,
the referees and three on three, by the way, are
dressed like gym teachers. It's like untucked gray t shirts
and gray shorts. They don't look like referees.
Speaker 9 (26:52):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
Water polo. They're just beating the ever living crap out
of each other, not just under the water, but the
men stuff, Like dudes are getting punched in the face,
and I'm like, where's the whistle? How is this allowed?
I don't understand. Men's handball is fascinating, but there are
so many events and there's so much tonnage that a
lot of these stories only have a shelf life of
(27:15):
like twenty four hours. Like I think the women's team
plays in hoops today. They had like too million people
watching the other day. Maybe they play tomorrow. People are
gonna forget about rugby seven's, when women's hoops gets back
on the court, when Lebron and company gets back on
the court, when track and field starts like small Biles
(27:36):
and the women's symnastics team amazing yesterday, and then they
talked trash to their haters afterwards, like that was just
great television, and then poof, like we're onto the next
either niche sport or big sport.
Speaker 6 (27:50):
I almost feel like there's too much Simone's a good example.
I didn't know there was beef with I guess Mikayla.
Someone said something about they don't work hard enough. But
the moment she made that Instagram post last night, I'm like, yeah,
tell her, tell her. And I didn't even know what
was going on. But that's why this is so fun.
You're just learning so much more about these sports that
you didn't know about, and all these side stories.
Speaker 8 (28:09):
Gymnastics.
Speaker 6 (28:11):
I have no interest in watching gymnastics three hundred and
sixty four days out of the year, but last night I'm.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
Like, wat, get to the TV.
Speaker 6 (28:17):
It's just it's so fun to watch the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
What is your favorite event to watch?
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Ryan, I'm like Drew, I never would ever watch the gymnastics,
but the Summer Olympics, you have to watch it. I mean,
that is the go to I remember Mary lou Rehtten
for crying out loud, and Carrie Strug and all these.
Speaker 8 (28:36):
Yeah, was it Bella Corol was her coach?
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Bella? Yeah, when she sprang to her ankle and stuck
the vault. I mean, that's that's that's the go to sport.
But I tell you I am kind of a I'm
a guy. I like to watch swimming too.
Speaker 6 (28:48):
Swimming that's another one. I would never want to watch swimming.
Everyone watch Olympics. I'm like, give me all of the
swim Give more swimming.
Speaker 5 (28:53):
I can't wait for break dancing. Like I'm oddly fascinated
by the fact that break dancing is now part of
the Summer Olympics. I want to see that.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
I am one hundred percent with you. I don't know
what it's gonna look like, but I'm fascinated by it.
I think one of the things that kind of works
against and the viewership is through the roof, so it's
not like people aren't watching. But I think one of
the things that works against it from a sports standpoint
is there really aren't enough villains right in swimming, especially
women swimming. We hate Australia, like that's fun to root
(29:26):
against Australia. But Russia's been banned from the Olympics by
the World Anti Doping Agency and then the IOC band
Russia and Belarus due to their involvement in Ukraine. So
I think the athletes are still competing, but you don't
see Russia out there. So it's like, you're not gonna
get a Rocky three moment? Is it Rocky three with
(29:49):
the US versus Russia? You just so, I think I
think we're kind of missing out, like and not on
when do I need people to root for? I need
somebody to root against, Like the Australian swim coach who's
got this law kiki blonde hair and always runs up
and down the aisle and like talking smack. I hate
that dude. I hate Like I want to see bad
things happening. That helps me get invested in what's happening.
(30:13):
I don't really, it's hard to root against like real
Olympians so because of everything they go through and how
they only have this finite window to accomplish their goals.
Speaker 6 (30:22):
Yeah, that Russian documentary on Netflix years ago. I mean
that made it easy to not like Russia in the Olympics.
I'd like more of them as a villain story. You
mentioned Chase Budinger a little bit briefly earlier, but I
liked the photo of him and Durant. I didn't realize
they were the co MVPs of the McDonald's All American
Game in high school?
Speaker 8 (30:40):
Were they?
Speaker 6 (30:40):
And then they recreated the photo in the Olympics where
Chase is playing volleyball and Durant, you know, led the
team in scoring the other day. So that was a
unique little twist. I didn't realize that they had that
history together.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
I called a couple of Buttingers games when he was
at Arizona and then he ends up in the NBA
for I think like five seasons. It goes to show
you just how elite guys are playing in the association.
Right just because you were MVP of the McDonald's All
American Game, just because you were first team AF PAC
twelve maybe PAC twelve Player of the Year, doesn't mean
you're gonna you know, you're gonna last forever in the league.
(31:14):
But it also shows just how wildly athletic all these
dudes are to then transition and play freaking beach volleyball.
It's amazing.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Yeah, then more power to him. Man, he's still at
the competitive juices in it. He still don't go to
the Olympics and compete at a high level like this.
I think it's one of the best stories of the
Olympics right now.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
I'm looking forward to golf starting. I know that's a
sport I watch often, but Olympic golf is gonna be fun.
I believe that gets underway tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
We didn't talk, by the way, because I was on vacation,
But how about the tournament? They went to a five
man playoff there in your hometown tournament. It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Yeah, five remember playoff and a dude chipped in for
how far he chip into for the win, like forty
five yards or south yard?
Speaker 6 (31:56):
But he had a big shot to uh was he
was from England and that punched his ticket to go
to the British Open. So it's pretty neat to see
him win that one. We learned yesterday that tournament's moving
to Louisville, tom So Lexington's done with the PGA. The
ESCO gets keep in Kentucky. The same group that took
it over and kept it here one more year. They're
keeping it around, but it's moving to Louisville.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
Did you see that comment? Was that riding on the wall?
Speaker 6 (32:19):
It was a very poorly kept secret once it changed
from Barbasol to the ESCO Championship. It's the same guy
that owns Valhalla helped get Scotti Scheffler out of jail
that morning. So once he saved it and captain Kentucky,
he kind of assumed he would move it over to Louisville.
That's all right, It's at least we get to keep
one in the Bluegrass. But it was a good run
over at Nicholasville. Had a lot of fun at that
over the years when it wasn't raining.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Hey, any other big news we need to talk about.
Nick Rouss reported that Paul Rodriguez on the offensive line
in Kentucky has medically retired. Darren Peterson has Kentucky in
the cut list. He's going to have an official visit
ahead of fall commitment. What else is like, what's notable
going on right now?
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Well? La Familia is the big been the big story
for the last several weeks. As basketball team, I mean
I got people texting me out of the blue man,
how can we watch the game in Philadelphia? I'm all
on board now. And you know, how, why aren't you
guys doing a radio broncket. They want they want us
to do a pre game and a post game for
law Familiar Tom and people are like, they'd serious about it.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Do you think this would have happened? Let's say you
left Familia made the Final four as they have and
the opponents there are as they are stated, how much
does the Louisville game play into that? And if that
would have just been a blowout instead of that Louisville
team kind of coming back and making it interesting late
in the second half. Like do you think that's what's
(33:41):
driven the interest or just because this team is so
likable and the nostalgia tied end to so many of
these guys.
Speaker 7 (33:48):
It's nostalgia, Yeah, nostalgia.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
You got the Harrison Twins the time, you got Willie
colly Stein, you got Nate Cestina dropping bombs all over
the court. I mean, you got Daniel Worton be the
best cheerleader in the whole building on the bench. I
mean it is I think a lot of nostalgia and
people just let us love these guys.
Speaker 7 (34:07):
And it's the timing too.
Speaker 9 (34:08):
You got Mark Pope, new coach in town, and now
you're getting to see, you know, these UK players that
you weren't sure if they were gonna support, you know,
Kentucky in the past.
Speaker 7 (34:16):
Well now you're seeing it. They're still bleeding blue now.
Speaker 9 (34:19):
And I think it's the time a new coach in
town cows in Arkansas and then the guys Cole's guys
are still representing Kentucky and they still got some love
for Kyle down there in Arkansas as well.
Speaker 8 (34:29):
There's some current basketball news.
Speaker 6 (34:30):
Mario and I got to do interviews with some of
the players yesterday were they're giving us three at time
this summer as we get to know the new guys.
We got to talk to Kobe Brea, Jackson Robinson, and
Trent Noa yesterday. Brea, who's one of the best shooters
in college basketball last year, just fun talking to him
about how exciting it's gonna be to play on an
offense where the big men are looking to pass out
(34:50):
to the perimeter, you're surrounded by guys that can shoot.
He said, you all are gonna be shocked by how
fast we play and how many threes we take. That
got me very excited. They're gonna live and die by
the three. But it's gonna be a fun style of basketball.
And it was good hearing from him for the first
time since he's been on the team.
Speaker 7 (35:06):
Drew, he doesn't know.
Speaker 9 (35:08):
Kobe doesn't know if he's the greatest shooter on the
team right now. He's known to be the best shooter
in the nation. But we were talking to him yesterday, Drew,
and he's like, I'm not sure, Like maybe I don't know.
I'm confident that I'm the best shooter on the team,
but hey, like it might be Travis, that Mike, There's
some other guys that can shoot on this team as well.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
There's another aspect of it I want to get to.
But to your point about the style of play, like
going back and watching the BYU stuff under Pope, what
I'm hopeful of is it's not only the style, but
it's also a and he had elite players at BUYU,
but it's also a step up in the caliber player
(35:46):
running the style right, which takes it to a whole
other level. And then you get other teams in the
league that like to get up and down too, like
Alabama's gonna be That's gonna be a really interesting matchup,
and it's gonna be a microcosm of modern basketball as
a whole, not just modern college basketball. I want to
talk more about lot Familia when we returned. How about
(36:07):
a live read before we go to break Shannon? Can
we do that? Ryan?
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (36:10):
Right, I got Shann and Drew's got the rest of them.
Speaker 2 (36:12):

a bow on my guest hosting for this summer.
Speaker 8 (37:06):
It was.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
It was a blast. After this, I know I'm crying.
I'm really not crying, but I am on the inside.
Kentucky Sports Radio wraps up right after this. Welcome back
Kentucky Sports Radio. Tom in for Matt comes back from
nether Regions next week.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
I suppose he's back in the United States now. Actually
he got to the United States yesterday.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
Where is he?
Speaker 2 (37:34):
I think he's in New York. Not coming back to
Kentucky until Friday.
Speaker 7 (37:37):
Friday.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
We feel his feel his aura getting closer and closer.
How about another live weed before we shut things down?
Speaker 8 (37:45):
Huh sure?
Speaker 6 (37:47):
The segment sponsored by DraftKings. You know we've been talking

Speaker 3 (38:33):
Two point favorites. It's fascinating with the elam ending first
dead ball under four minutes a target score they had
eight to the leader, and there's you know, as a
coach from Tyler, you just got to figure out, like, okay,
when do I want to take a time out? As
soon as we hit three point fifty nine and set
the elam ending There and then cash in on the
eight points as fast as we can, or if we're trailing,
(38:55):
do we, you know, work the clock a little bit,
try to get closer before that next dead ball. I
think fascinating. Do you guys like the elam ending, Mario?
Do you like it?
Speaker 7 (39:03):
I love it? I love it.
Speaker 9 (39:04):
I think it creates an excitement in the game whenever
you're regardless of what happens, you're gonna get a buzzer beater.
You're gonna get a buzzer beat. I actually love it.
It's kind of what it reminds me of. It is
kind of a pickup game style. You know, you gotta
get the game point that. That's what it reminds me of.
And I'm a huge fan of the ELI ending.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
But Ryan, there's no way it's ever coming to college
basketball in the NBA, right, I mean, you can use
it for the All Star Game as they have, but
you're not gonna play regular season game this real are No.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
I don't think it will. I mean, like you said,
like maybe some All Star games or something like that,
but you do have a game winning shot every single game,
and it could be a ten point, twelve point, thirteen
point victory. But you hit that game winner, it's like
you just hit the last second shot to win by one.
I mean that does make it kind of exciting.
Speaker 8 (39:47):
I've enjoyed it.
Speaker 6 (39:47):
But Bunday Knight's elam ending set the game of basketball
back several years. I don't know what they ended up shooting, Mario.
We were there an extra hour because neither team could
throw it in. Finally, Andrew Harrison made the game winner,
but there were several missed yes shots.
Speaker 9 (40:00):
After they set that target score. That was a little
hard to watch. You know what I think it is, Drue.
I think the players feel a little bit more pressure
when they when they had that target score on the board.
So maybe that's why you know they're missing a little
bit more.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Yeah, and you have a chance to end it, people
will throw up random shots. Hey, let's go to the
phone lines real quick.
Speaker 5 (40:18):
We've got Mark waiting, Channon, Yes, go ahead, Mark, Hey Tom.
Speaker 10 (40:22):
I'm curious if Hey Handler, I'm curious if you you know,
you've got a pretty special relationship with these guys, and
I just wondering do you have that same relationship with
fans of other teams or or is it, you know,
kind of just these guys that had this relationship.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
With well, I think it's just I think it's just
the Kentucky fan base. Mark, thanks for the call. And
it's tied into this show, right because I made a
connection with not just Map, but this entire group and
then I kind of got introduced to this entire listenership
which is representative of the Kentucky fan base. But obviously
(40:58):
there's you know, not direct overlaps because there's it's such
a wide variety of people to call into the show,
and I became a fan of the show. I don't
know that there's another show like it in the SEC.
Like Cole and Greg have a great show out of
Birmingham that talks football for Alabama and Auburn, Textaggs in Texas,
(41:20):
you know covers A and M. There's some Arkansas shows,
but there's really not a show like this. It really
has this sense of community throughout the entire state with
people who are listening not just for sports news and
not just for Kentucky news. So I think that's what
makes it unique. Also, really, the only reason guys, I
agreed to do this was try to get my Instagram
(41:41):
followers up. So Tommy H. Forty four t O M
M I E H forty four. I need to get
my Instagram followers up following. That's the only reason. That's
the only reason I did the show all summer.
Speaker 8 (41:55):
No, I completely get it. Mario.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
After the show, when he does our Instagram posts from
our accounts whole, make sure he tags you with an
encouragement to follow, Tom, because you deserve all the follows
that you'll get. And also part of the reason we're
so close. You left out a big detail. You're the
only person I've been snorkeling with in my life. I've
been snorkling one time. You were there.
Speaker 8 (42:14):
Uh And I think that's where everything started.
Speaker 6 (42:16):
With us in the water, well, most of us in
the waters.
Speaker 3 (42:21):
Look well, we're snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of
Flibian chasing turtles and Matt Jones is wearing a black
pearl necklace reading a book one day. I mean, it
was unbelievable.
Speaker 8 (42:32):
We had a good time, no doubt we did. We did.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
That was fun. We need to I think we need
another trip to the Bahamas Fellas. It's been a blast. Man.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Thank you so much, Tom, Thank you for doing this
all summer. We really, really appreciate it. You killed it.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
There was nothing else I'd rather do. And hopefully I
see you there for the UH for opening kickoff Kentucky football.
You got the first game the Yeah, We'll wait and see,
all right. Thanks for Kentucky Sports Radio. Enjoy the rest
of your summer, everybody,
