the University of Kentucky, state champion, national champion, everything you
(01:24):
could want right here as a Kentucky basketball player.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Darius, thank you very much for joining us.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Put that Mic dw so people can hear you.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
That's better. Yes, So, Darius, first of all, when I
think of, like from the state of Kentucky, how you
would want a basketball career to go, Ryan, I'm not
sure you could have a better one than this, right,
I mean, if you look at your high school career
or your college career play in the NBA, how blessed
are you from what? From what?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
From when you were growing up in Mason County to now?
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Extremely blessed man, extreme blessed.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
And I've been fortunate to play on some great teams,
you know, play for some great coaches. I've ended up
in some great situations, you know, and I don't take
that for granted. So, like I think the word that
you use, blessed is the perfect word.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Man.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
It's been an incredible run, amazing opportunity, and I embrace
every second of it.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Let's go through your career here a little bit. You
decide to come to college. A lot of people forget this.
For Billy Gillespie, you were there with the Billy Clyde
era for one year. Talk to me about when you
made that decision and what was the what was the
Billy Clyde year like my man.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Billy Gilly g Yeah, it was. It was interesting.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
It was interesting. It was interesting when I made the decision.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
I think I would have done it again, you know,
going back, I wouldn't have made a different choice.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
But you know, it was the team that kind of
brought me in.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Patrick Patterson, Jody Meeks, Ramone, Harris Perry Stevenson, all great
character guys. They really, you know, wrapped their arms around
me every visit I came, made me feel comfortable.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
I got a chance to play.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
With them a little bit, uh, you know, and just
an open gym when I came up. I loved the
chemistry that we had, you know, and they invited me in,
you know, and made me a part of the team,
which ultimately led to me committing to the University of Kentucky.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
And then I got there Billy G.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
So let me answer first of all, I would let's
start with this because I'm asking you some of the
goofy questions. But let's start with the one thing. There
was a positive side to Billy G. Then a lot
of people gets washed over because everything talk about that
for a minute, the positive ability.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
For sure, there was, there was, and he was a
good X and O guy. He wasn't, Yes, he really was.
He he knew the game of basketball.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
It's just his delivery was.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
Off, you know, which is important when you're dealing with,
you know, seventeen eighteen year old boys.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
So it's like, so you were there. Is it true
that John wall came for a visit? There's always some
story that's the story about John Walla's visit that like
Billy told him to stop talking or something on his visit.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Do you know is that true?
Speaker 5 (04:06):
That probably happened to more than just John Waller? Okay, yeah, yeah,
for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
All right, did our friend Josh Harrelson get locked in
the bathroom stall he.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Got sent to the bathroom.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
They didn't lock it, So yeah, yeah, my boy got
sent to the bathroom.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Was he forced to come home from the Vandy game
by himself?
Speaker 4 (04:27):
He wasn't by hisself, but he wasn't with the.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Team, but he wasn't. He has a good way delivering
all this. Yeah right, you're saying it the nicest way possible.
Did you ever have to do the drills that this
was the year before you? I don't know if it
continued your year where he would just make you all
dive on the ground time and talk about that.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Uh yeah, A bunch of different drills, you know, to
make us more physical, you know, a lot of charge.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Like taking charge drills.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, things you would think gladiators would do,
different stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
All right, So then John cal Perry shows up. Most
of the team, well pretty much all the team that
was not seniors were kind of shake their hand and say, hey,
find other homes. Accept you and Patrick talk to me
about when you met Cal and then what changed was
with Cal?
Speaker 5 (05:29):
A lot change, A lot changed and it happened so quick.
But uh, you know, just different system, different personality, different
batch of talent, you know what I mean. It was
a lot of adjustments to be made, but uh, the
guys that returned, we felt like that was the best
situation for us, you know, that was the best situation
(05:49):
for us to get better, and that's that's really what
led to us.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Stand.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Tell me, the first time you see John Wall and
DeMarcus Cousins play basketball, what's your reaction.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Got I had already knew John beforehand. I seen him
a lot at a different camps, ABCD camp, just different
different events like that.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
But DeMarcus was a different animal man. He was coming in.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
He was so skilled at his size, and they were
so hungry, man, they were so hungry. They wanted to
win a championship. You know, they wanted to be pros.
They wanted to be Hall of famers, you know what
I mean. And that was me, honestly, that was my
first time really being exposed to that mentality and a
different it was a different batch of talent that was
coming in and what.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
You could tell like, it's like it's all right.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
So I've always made the argument that since I've been
doing this, which was like two thousand and five, there's
nothing like the feeling that was around the University Kentucky
program that year, just in terms of like just rock
Star Lebron's at the game, Jay Z's at the game,
Like all this stuff's happened. You were in it, did
you feel that? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:51):
It was amazing, Man, it was amazing. That was Seriously,
I agree with you. That year was different than any
other year. Just the amount of people we were exposed to,
the type of people were exposed to, Like you said
that was coming to the game. Uh, the amount of
eyes that were on us. I mean it completely changed
overnight when Call and those guys got here.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
I mean, the pressure was different.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
It was It was a lot that went into that change,
and we definitely felt it every single day.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Give me your best Marcus Cousins story that you can tell, Yeah,
that you could tell.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
You know.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
One of my favorites was his approach to the media
before we played that U n C game. Okay, Uh,
they had a really really, really good team, you know,
and they came in. It was a lot of talk
with us and them, and with him being a younger guy,
you know, going up and talked to the media, I
thought it would be a different approach.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
But yeah, he was very aggressive with the way that.
Speaker 6 (07:51):
He told you.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
You know, he called he called Alan Cutler the mustache.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
I'm sure some of y'all remember, but you put.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Me in a headlock one, so I can't. I can't
say the Remember when you played Cornell and he said
this ain't no spelling men.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Yeah, yeah, but we fed off of that though.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
You know that gave us a sense of confidence too,
because of what we did have a young team, you know,
so we we all fed off of his energy and
you know, the approach that he had to the game
because he was extremely competitive.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
So they were kind of like, you guys are the underdog,
you know, and he was like.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
No, when you watch the Celtics, do you boom because
of Joe Missoula beating you guys in the Elite eight?
Speaker 4 (08:29):
I probably will now. Drew Holliday, I love play with
him in New Orleans.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Yeah, yeah, so I couldn't boom, but now that he's gone,
I definitely will.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
All right, let's go to twenty eleven. You got Brandon Knight.
I think one of the most underrated players to play
ever play here. Do you agree?
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Definitely? Oh my gosh.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
He was so talented, he worked so hard, and he
has some really big moments. Man, he has some really
big moments. He stepped up big made a lot of
great plays for us and pushed us pretty far into tournament.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Where George throws that ball off Sowinger's chest. Did you
know you were gonna win at that moment right there?
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Yeah, we felt pretty confident and uh, you know, we
had pulled out a lot of tough games, so I
think by that time our mentality was we could win
any game, similar to like how the Pacers were in
the playoffs this year.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
I think you're right. You got twenty twelve. You know,
obviously last national championship when you look back at that year,
obviously Anthony Davis was a freak. Maybe the best season
in UK basketball history. Probably was the best season in
UK basketball history. But Michael Kidd Gilchris was on the team.
There's the famous story that he asked to sit out
in the SEC tournament so that you could start in
(09:33):
the final game because he wanted you to.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
You know what was that year like? It seemed like
a special.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Group, definitely, man and I think the thing that stood
out the most was just how quick we clicked, you
know what I mean With those other groups. It took
a little time for us to us to each other.
A lot of big names coming in. But my senior year,
that team jailled really really fast, and I think, you know,
with Terrence Jones coming back, Dron coming back, we had
(09:59):
a little bit more guys come back that has some
experience down the line. In the tournament, we were able to,
you know, kind of facilitate that a little bit better
than in the past. But yeah, it just happened so fast,
and everybody was just totally bought in to win it.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
The championship.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
You know this guy here, Durran's like his favorite player.
Speaker 7 (10:15):
No, Darius is my favorite player. Y'all had fun that
twenty twelfth season. Earlier in the year when the Thunder
were there.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Yeah, so the Thunder come to town. I want to ask
if this story is true. We've told it many years,
so I hope it is. That you all played the
Thunder the Thunder had who all was here?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Durant was it Durant?
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Durant was here? Harden, Yes, James was here. Russell.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
So you all played hardened Westbrook and Durant. I'm told
first pickup game it's UK versus them. You guys win,
and then Marcus Tigue says a line, we is Kentucky.
We give no blanks. And then they played you the
next game and like you didn't score? Is that story true?
I wanted to make sure that second part.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
I don't want to get any trouble, you know, I
want to start no problems with anybody. But yeah, no,
we we came out and like I said, those guys
who they were extremely hungry, you know what I mean.
We were trying to see where we were. Those guys
were just they showed up after their shoes were untied.
They wasn't you know what I mean, They wasn't really
locked in, But we were trying to go at them
that first game and that that woke them up.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Though they.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
All right, final four, you get to then you know
you're playing Louisville. You know what that game means. That's
the most nervous Darius I've ever been for a basketball game,
and I had not one thing to.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Do with whatever the result would be.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
You probably understood how important that game was more than
anyone that played in it.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
What were your thoughts leading into it?
Speaker 4 (11:45):
We can't lose.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
Honestly, I didn't want to be, you know, on the
team that lost to Louisville in the Final four. I
just I didn't I didn't to be honest, you know
what I mean. And I think the guys understood that too.
How much it would mean to the city of Lexton,
all of us that's come through here, love Lexington, love
the people in Kentucky, how you embrace us, you know
what I mean. It means a lot to us, you
(12:07):
know what I mean. So we wanted to do that
for Lexington too.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
You beat Kansas in the championship. Drew and I were
on the floor that night. It's still one of the
most special, at least from a fan, probably the most
special night that I've had. What was it, like? I mean,
not many people get to experience winning championship? Only eight
groups have done it. Excuse me here, eight groups have
done it. You what was it like for you?
Speaker 4 (12:30):
Tough? It was difficult, honestly amazing though.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
It's one of the best moments I've ever had on
the basketball court for sure, probably the best. And just
to do it with the guys that we did it with.
Like I said, we jailed instantly as soon as they
got on campus.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
We put a lot of work into it, so it
was a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
John Caliperry, you hear about a year ago a little
bit longer going to Arkansas.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
What's your first reaction?
Speaker 4 (12:56):
Oh, man, I was hurt. I was hurt.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
I'm not gonna lie. I mean, I understood it, you
know what I mean? I understood.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Why did you we say you understand it? I understood it.
How did you understand it?
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (13:07):
You know, because everything comes to an end, you know
what I mean. He wasn't gonna be here forever. And
I totally understand that. But I have a lot of
love girkout and I understand the program wanted to go
in a different directions start over, you know what I mean.
And I think the higher that they chose was a
great higher.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
What do you what about Mark Pope?
Speaker 5 (13:26):
I love coach Pope, I do. I love his approach
to the game. I think he's a genius when it
comes to basketball. You can see a play out. There's
been plenty of.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Time talk about that, like, because you know it having
played what makes Mark such a good look?
Speaker 3 (13:38):
As you say, genius coaching basketball?
Speaker 5 (13:41):
I think you can tell there's been plenty of times,
you know, in the first half where we've seen we
were watching the game and it looked like we were
struggling a bit and they went to halftime and came
out and figured it out. You know, that's a big
part of coaching and making adjustments, and I think he
does a great job of that.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
And then me being able.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
To see a few practices and his approach to the game.
He really takes it serious, treats it Like I said.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
What are the practices? Like, Like, what's you've been now
in three I mean, we'll obviously been a ton in
the NBA, But just think about Billy Gillespie, John cal
Perry Mark, tell me the difference between those three types
of practices. I think a lot of fans would be
interesting because they don't get to see that.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
Starting with Billy g it's he was a more of
an old school guy, you know, just we're gonna outwork
all other teams. We're gonna be in the best shape,
We're gonna be the strongest the fact like that was
his mentality and approach, and like I said, he has
some good x's and those to put with that. So
he wanted us to feel like we're in better shape
than everybody. And the practices reflected that. You know, with
(14:38):
coach cal very competitive practices, very competitive. We had the
talent to do so, so us going against each other
was a lot of times more difficult than the game
we was gonna play at the end of the week.
So setting up the practices for everything to be extremely competitive,
pushing each other in kind of an iron shopper sharpens
iron mentality. And then with coach Pope, I feel it's
(15:00):
really technical, and you know, the game's changed a lot
since back in the day.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
Now you have analytics, you have a lot of different.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
Things that go into the game. So I can just
tell and see his approaches. Like I said, he treats
it like a science. Everything is very intentional.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
I've explained, like Cal would teach you, guys to make.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Your own decisions in some ways.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Right, he would put you in the spot and say, okay,
here you could do this, this or this and read
it right. Pope hasn't more we do this, we do this,
you can do this or this. But there's that science
to it. Do you agree with that? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
There was a lot of freedom inside of Cal's system,
you know, and that allowed you to see some of
the greatness of John wall and you know Eric Bledsoe,
those guys, Jamal mur just the different guys that could
express themselves on the court. And you know, Coach Pope,
like you said, everything is down to the minor detail,
but it puts you in a good position also, you know,
to showcase your game inside of this structured environment.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
You know what I mean? Two different approaches, but I
would enjoy playing from both.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Can we do one more sament?
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Gotcha right, We're gonna take a break. We'll be right
back here, Assured Partners. This is Darius Miller KSR worker
back in his Kentucky sports radio here live and Assured Partners,
part of the Kentucky Office Highway Safety KSR Safe Summer
Driving Tour. I'm gonna give these dudes a couple of
questions here, But first let me ask you, uh, best
(16:20):
player you played with college or NBA? Who is the
Who's the dude that you go that's the most talented teammate?
I know that's a tough question, but.
Speaker 5 (16:28):
A man, I'd have to say either Anthony Davis.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Or Shae Shae. That's right, I forgot you. It's Anthony
Davis or Shay. Why can you How about Shay's rise?
Did you see it coming?
Speaker 4 (16:48):
No? I don't think I saw it.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
Coming like this, I knew he was gonna be good
for sure, and me getting a taste of his work
ethic in Oklahoma.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
He worked so hard.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
I knew he was going to be uh, you know,
eventually he was going to be great, and he already
was when I was there. Man, he was doing incredible
things when I was in Oklahoma. But just the way
that he worked in his mentality, how you approached the
game was totally different. But him man, John John Wahall
was crazy. Uh, DeMarcus was crazy.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Uh. Drew Holliday was really good. I've played with some
great players, man, I've been fortunate, right.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
I think there's like three dudes who have won a
state title in Kentucky and then win a national title
at the UK. I think lists like Cliff Hagen, Anthony EPs,
and you. I think that might be it. But I've
heard other guys talk about their greatest win was the
high school win, not necessarily their nationale. Like Steve Spurrier
said his greatest win in his life was when he
want a state baseball title. How do you feel about it?
(17:46):
And then how does that Mason County state championship ranking
win in your mind?
Speaker 4 (17:50):
I totally get that.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
I totally get that because those are the guys you've
been you grew up with, you know what I mean.
I played with those guys since I was second third grade.
And to be able to work and see the growth
and the development through the team, you know what I mean.
And then our last game we win a championship. That's
that's that's a special feeling. So I can totally understand. Uh,
that's intimate for sure.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
Uh Bloomington, Indiana, that it's the worst place on the earth.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (18:15):
You you actually caught the worst of it when they
stormed the court on their stupid Super Bowl that they
don't shut up about you. Actually it was scary. I
saw my own eyes. You were caught underneath some of
the fans that storm the court, all those bumps. Uh
what was that like? On a serious notere is that
kind of terrifying?
Speaker 4 (18:31):
Was?
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Were you looking for someone to help you?
Speaker 2 (18:33):
We were terrified for you. We were watching you at
that moment. We were in the arena, and I was
worried about you. Man.
Speaker 5 (18:39):
I was more so pissed off. I'm not gonna lie.
I was because we just lost to Indiana. That was
horrible in itself, And then uh, you know, being surrounded
by you know, their celebrations.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
How bad was the crowd that day? I mean that
was that may be the wildest crowd I've ever been in.
I don't know what you think.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
That was a crazy atmosphere, for sure. They were, they
were jacked up, they were ready for Definitely. It was
a crazy game.
Speaker 7 (19:02):
And you are almost the example of a player getting trampled.
That's about as close as we've seen one. I mean,
were you not terrified a little bit?
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (19:08):
Yeah, the guys, I mean some guys came in and
helped me up pretty quick, you know what I mean.
But uh, yeah, it was wild.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Man.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
I've never experienced you ever come close to punching one
of those stupid Indiana.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Didn't your mom got assaulted or something in the crowd
that day, your mom or dad somebody got.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
They they didn't get assalted, but uh, it was a
bit a bit physical getting out of there, for sure.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
It was that. That was wild. That's the most insane
college environment I've ever seen. That includes the years of
Kentucky and a Duke, I've never seen one like it
was that game.
Speaker 7 (19:41):
You need a DeMarcus on that team wouldn't have been
any problem.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Uh, TBT is coming. It was a ton of excitement
last year. Are you excited about this year's girl?
Speaker 4 (19:49):
Definitely?
Speaker 5 (19:50):
Definitely And uh, you know the group that's managing it,
they're making it better and better every year. Super excited
for the group that's coming out this year. I think
they have a really talented team and a chance to
win it.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
You should get out there with them, right you still
can You can still show them a thing or two,
can't you?
Speaker 4 (20:06):
Nah Man?
Speaker 1 (20:09):
First question he got from Patty when he walked up,
you're gonna play for TVT.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
You know, it's just you know, you get to point
you just like I just don't have what I had before.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
I gotta I don't even want it that bad anymore,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
I'm not gonna lie to you. I don't.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
I like, I enjoy watching my kids play. You know,
they're competing now. I get to yell from the sideline
and have fun with that. So maybe you.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
I don't think a lot of people rise this. You
have a gym here in Lexington that you have that
you're part of, and tell people about that.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
If anybody's familiar with the Sports Center, you know out
by the mall, you know Coroach from the movie Theater. Uh,
me and a group of partners we just you know,
took over that space and looking to do some amazing
things with basketball.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Super excited about it.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
We feel like we can have a huge impact with
the community and uh get back to the youth, you
know what I mean, just thinking about the guys we
we want. First of all, excuse me, we're changing the
name to the Alumni Center, you know what I mean.
And just I was going into a story about uh,
you know, Tony Delk and Scott Pageant and those guys
working with me and helping me to develop my game.
So similar mentality, you know, with how I'm approaching this
(21:14):
gym and trying to get back to the youth, get
a lot of the alumni to come back and you know,
pour into the youth and uh you know, touch the
community a little bit.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
So we're excited they're doing great things with that. So
followed the now call the Alumni Center, right, yeah, all right.
Some questions from the fans here. One person writes Darius
had one of the nastiest dunks in UK history. Does
he remember throwing down on that guy? Against Ole Miss.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
Oh yeah, definitely, yeah, sure, for sure, I remember it.
Uh yeah.
Speaker 5 (21:44):
Me and Cal just got to an argument right before that,
you know, so he gassed me up a little bit
and it resulted in that.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
Like you could, you could argue with Cal.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
He was alright with it.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Oh he loved it.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
Yeah, I think he did.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
He ate it up, but it got us going, you
know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (21:59):
It got us going, and we went out and took
it out on the opposing team.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
So it works out for all of it.
Speaker 7 (22:04):
Kentucky yell at Cal right after that dunk. I think
you did something right after the dunk to the bench too.
There was kind of out of character for you.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
I wasn't worried about the defense or anything. I just had
to I had to express myself to coach Cal.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
And express yourself. One person rights Kentucky versus Arkansas. Who's
Darius rooting for.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
I'm rooting for Kentucky. I love Cal.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
I wish Cal all of the success in the world.
I do, But I'm a Kentucky boy.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
That's the answer off in Kentucky.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
I'll bleed blue.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
That's I'm a Kentucky One person rights. Ask him what
his first thought of you and Drew and ks R word,
didn't he come up kind of as you did?
Speaker 1 (22:38):
You?
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Kind of did?
Speaker 3 (22:39):
We kind of were on the same thing.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Yeah, yeah, that's true, that's true.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Did you all see us as like being annoying?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
You can say it if you did.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
No, not all, not at all.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Actually, that group were you were there in twenty ten
is probably the group that we like and we kind
of vibed with the most.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
So yeah, yeah, no, I feel like we had a
good relationship.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Yeah we did, Darius, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Everybody give me a round with the plaus Darius Miller UK legend.
Whenever I do top players all that in UK history,
people get angry if we don't put you on it.
Just so you know, we'll take a break and be
right back. This KSR quarterback Tucky Swartz Radio here and
Assured Partners. The Sured Partners is the broker for personal
(23:22):
life insurance, commercial life insurance, employee benefits, good benefits, keep
good people and local office right here. Assured Partners. He
Hayes Featherston and the guys bring us out here. It's
been awesome. The food from breaks, there's still some available,
not much, but a little bit, and then I'm giving
away Reds tickets here at the end. It's part of
the Kentucky Office Highway Safety KSR Safe Summer Driving Tour.
(23:43):
How good was Darius Miller? I told him after it
was over, Hey man, we talked sometimes about who are
former players you can get involved in media? If he
wanted to, he can do this, and I have a
high standard. He and Willie are probably the only two
players in the last fifteen years that I would say
that about.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
But he I think Ryan could do it if he
wanted to, you know, just he's so humble. You know,
the guy has every reason to be well.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
He is a superstar.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
We mad him Mount Rushmore of Kentucky kids and played
high school basketball. He may be on it for what
he's done. So I love the guy.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
He got a rare second segment on the show a
lot of times.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Yeah, so he just played it's raining men?
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Who picked that song?
Speaker 7 (24:17):
That's me? I like when The Weather Girls comes on occasionally,
the Hallelujahs. I think hit it the perfect time. I
can't help, but snap, I don't. It's not really my
cup of tea. I'm happily married. You don't really want
to know. I don't. I don't really need to be
rained on by men, but I do love the songs.
Speaker 8 (24:33):
There was a good chance chance for that to happen.
Speaker 7 (24:35):
I just liked the beginning, like Hi, really you know.
It's just like when it says, HI, yeah, just a
great intro, great song. We doesn't really fit my lifestyle.
Got a pose if you're into that lifestyle whatever, but
it's not really what I do, all right.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
I mean, listen a good song. I just did country
Boy Kids Survive? You all did its raining men? And
what was yours?
Speaker 4 (24:52):
Man?
Speaker 8 (24:52):
I feel like a woman.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
I just who's the liberal here?
Speaker 8 (24:57):
Plus the opposite.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
To twenty to eighty seven. I don't know if people
know this before I go to the phones? Did you
know that Marge Simpson died? No spoiler alert? I hope
everybody forgot to have an extra in the season finale
of The Simpsons, apparently they killed off Marg Simpson. Now
they've left it open. I'm sure they're not gonna have
her gone forever, but the end is like Marg Simpson
(25:24):
is dead and it's the cliffhanger for the next season.
Did Marge Simpson really die? Can you believe that? After
thirty six years of being the same age, she would
be dead.
Speaker 8 (25:35):
No, she aged gracefully. But you know they killed Kenny
in every episode of South Park and he survives somehow
the name.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Yeah, but that's their whole gimmick.
Speaker 8 (25:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
I mean, what if Marge Simpson is dead. I feel
like she's not getting enough play. I mean, we talk
about when people die. I feel that Marge Simpson deserves her.
If she's gonna be dead.
Speaker 8 (25:52):
Her Homer's gonna be a widow now I know.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
But Homer could be dating.
Speaker 8 (25:56):
Now did you imagine that's going?
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Actually like that?
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Uh. Ace Bailey has yet to report to Utah, and
Utah says they have not talked to him since they drafted.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
He is going well.
Speaker 7 (26:15):
Outside of my guy Yang Hansen that was in the
crowd and will now be Andrew car summer league teammate.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
That's right.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
The Ace Bailey is my favorite thing. I love that
he said, Utah, I'm not going don't pick me, and
Danny Age said, you know what, I don't care. I'm
picking you anyway, but because we're not gonna let you run.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
They had a press conference scheduled today to introduce the
rookies to the media, Walter Clayton Junior, who also was picked.
He's there. Acet Bailey not there, he says. Basically, they
talked to him, and he says, I've just been doing
some things. Been doing something, not interviews, They've been.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Doing something he hasn't.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
Apparently they've called him and he doesn't pick up. Utah Jazz,
I'm sorry, we'll send that on the voice.
Speaker 7 (26:57):
Now.
Speaker 8 (26:58):
How is it gonna work out?
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Though? How are they gonna I think this is gonna
be This is interesting. The last person to do this,
I think was Steve Francis. You remember he got picked
by Vancouver and he basically forced them to trade him
to Houston. Danny Ainge just said, I ain't trading him.
If he wants to do something else, we'll still have
his rights.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
Does he not realize he's taking his own brand like
other teams aren't gonna want to do with his fans
aren't gonna love him.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
As we were driving home from the place in Shepherdsville
where they do where we did the ks bar stuff,
I was listening to Jeff Teague's podcast, which, by the way,
I highly recommend unless you have children around and then
do not listen to even one second of it. But
Jeff Teague is entertaining and they were going through the
draft and Jeff Teak's point was, Ryan, dude, you're playing basketball.
(27:42):
Jeff Tegue was like, you're already a little shaky as
a character. Go to Utah. There ain't gonna be anything
for you to do. It'll keep you from getting in trouble.
It'll make sure you play basketball. And he said they
can't get any He was interesting. He was like, they
cannot get any superstars.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
So if you're just.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Decent, they'll max you out because not gonna be able
to sign any free agents. He's like, I'd rather go
to Utah than almost anywhere. You're a celebrity. There no distractions,
and it keeps you from you can get a superstar
contract even if you're not great. I thought it was
a good case.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
I wonder, you know, even if they come to terms
that he joins the team, how can you go in
that locker room when everybody that locker room heard you
say I don't want to play here. I don't want
to play with these guys. They gonna go in the
locker room ei their teammates.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Not off to a good start. I think I think
it's fair.
Speaker 8 (28:27):
Since I have a high opinion of him. So for
a guy who couldn't even take his team to the NCAA,
that's right.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
And then finally, after our conversation yesterday, I have been
inundated with people telling me they've had hand foot and
mouth to see us. Wow, you've had it. It's literally now.
Granted I understand not having kids that I didn't, I
cannot believe how many people have had hand foot and mouth.
I'm not gonna ask y'all they all raise your hands.
(28:53):
I don't want to put you on the spot. He
volunteered for everybody, but I am amazed at the prevalence
of hand foot mouth disease, and everybody says, was it awful?
Everybody says it is absolutely awful. So now I went
from kind of making fun of Connor Joe to Drew.
I kind of feel bad.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
For Connor Joe and his hand feet mouth.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
I need to be donated into some Connor Joe causes
here getting feeling better. I had heard of it. I
still think it was ridiculous. They put it on that
graphic with the Rids and my two friends that have
had it, like everyone else just said, is the absolute worst,
and as we've heard, getting it through daycare seems.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
To be the way that it gets to you.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
I did have somebody say to me, Matt, be careful
because oftentimes one of the ways it gets passes at
petting zoos. But that's the good thing, because we were
around the animals yesterday. But I don't pet him. Yeah,
so that's exact. So that's partially why.
Speaker 8 (29:38):
You were shaking hands with people who were petting.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
That good point. But hopefully there they keep them all clean.
And so I'm not worried about it. Well, you said
it yesterday.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Now every time we hear that name, Connor Joe, what's
the first thing we're gonna think.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
I'll think of it. When he comes up, I will
call him hand foot in mouth.
Speaker 8 (29:53):
I can't make a sign and hold up behind a
whole play.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Well, he was the most anonymous player on the team,
so he actually used it. Now he's not.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
Now you're saying this is good for his brand, now
we know who he is.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
That's true.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
It's very like if you get like Syphless, I don't
know if you want to be the Sifless guys.
Speaker 8 (30:10):
Guy than I nobody.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
I kind of agree with you. This is the same
theory with the motivated Mark Stoops, you might as well
lean into it. That's right, you know, So I hadn't
affected Shannon too. If you were good, if you were
if you were going to learn anything from our president.
He does that, like he gets arrested, has a mugshot,
and then he sells it on T shirts and everybody
gets over it. Like, I think that that's part of
(30:32):
what you do. Who's up next, Mark? Mark? Go ahead? Mark?
Speaker 6 (30:38):
Hey guys, Uh yeah, I just I'm so excited to
hear Darius on there. I love that guy. I think
definitely one of my favorite all time UK basketball players.
We were neighbors for a short time at while back.
But I did want to add one thing to what
Ryan shaid. He believed that he's one of maybe three
players that won the state title as well as national
(30:59):
chief ship. I think to death, I believe he's the
only one who did those as well as one in Kentucky,
mister basketball. So when you talk about amazing, he's definitely
got to be honest, he might be the one. If
there's one Mount Roch with one player on it, I
don't think that's interesting.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
Yeah, I didn't realize that. So yeah, so Darius, did
you know that, Darius, that you're the only player to
win a state championship, a national championship of Kentucky and
be mister basketball ever? Did you know that? All right?
So give him around of applause, Yeah, one of one.
He didn't even know that. So, Sarah, I hope you're
telling me the truth. I appreciate the call because every
it's gonna excited if you are lying, and then that's
(31:40):
gonna be very very h very mean. It's kind of
like the stat I said about Anthony Davis the win
a college title, be National Player of the Year, win
an NBA title, win an Olympic gold medal. It's like
Bill Walton, Magic Johnson and him, like it's only like
I hate it's it's only like three people that have
(32:01):
done it over the years.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
You know, to hear him talk his first year with Billy,
he had him, Patrick Patterson and Jody Meeks.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
That team didn't make the tournament.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
That tells you right there something was wrong.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
But he also I did think it was good that
he said that. You know, it's been many years we
can say Billy had some positives to him. He was
not He was a troubled guy, but he wasn't through
all bad like most people in the world. They're not
all bad, not all good. He had some positives and
guys I think know that.
Speaker 7 (32:29):
Yeah, we've heard other players that are on those teams
speak highly of them too. I mean they committed to
play for the guy.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I know.
Speaker 7 (32:34):
I didn't go perfectly, but they had good moments. I
loved when Darius was on here, how delicate he was
handling the questions, Like when you said, did they lock
Josh in the bathroom, It's like, well, Josh was in
the bathroom, they didn't physically lock it, but he was
kind of he gently confirmed a lot of what we
had heard.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
He was kind of doing it, was being nice about it.
Tell me about Stockton.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Morgan's doctor mortgage. I referred them to a buyer yesterday.
I'm on to meet with him this afternoon because they're
looking at start to go out and look for some
investment properties. So Stocking Morgan's not gonna do your personal mortgage.
They can do investment properties. They can do cash out refinance,
anything you want to do. They'll hold your hand to
the entire process, make it as easy as possible. But
they could be a hassle the mortgage process. So if
you can trust them, you can believe them stock the
mortgage to give them a call or go on line
(33:14):
at stock them dot com mnls A two five nine
Equal Housing Lender.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
When we come back, we'll do a final segment. Here,
get ready for the weekend. This is this is Kentucky
Sports Radio. Well, come back, it is Kentucky Sports Radio. Here.
I said, I don't I have to admit I don't
totally understand. This is supposed to be something that is
the exact opposite of you.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
You would say these things.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
Yeah, but I don't think you understood the game. The
game was what songs are least like you? I could
see you singing this song.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
Oh I thought you Yeah. He says, I'm a hell
of a man. I don't think I am a hell
of a man. He says, I think you're good looking.
I don't think I am.
Speaker 8 (33:56):
You're saying your humble is what you're saying. He's saying,
you're saying because he's saying he's saying that he's perfect.
He's saying you think.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
You aren't perfect, you not at all. So you think
you are humble humble.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
And not perfect and not handsome.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
Yes, I agree with all.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Makes me said.
Speaker 7 (34:17):
You're handsome.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
I think you don't believe you're handsome. I am not.
And I don't think you believe you're perfect. I have
definitely not, But I also wouldn't say you're humble. You
have very high like belief in yourself.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
I mean, look at me, do I look like I
got a high beliefs in myself?
Speaker 8 (34:35):
I got a hole in my shoe for crying out loud.
You do a fair enough.
Speaker 7 (34:40):
You can see his sock through his top of his shoe.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
He can't, Yeah, you can't.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Have you thought about replacing those?
Speaker 2 (34:48):
First of all, you.
Speaker 8 (34:49):
Have you have little beefeet, I got a little baby feet.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
What size do you wear?
Speaker 1 (34:54):
Probably eight and a half or a nine?
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Probably clearly you don't wear eight and a half because
your toes sticking through the top of it.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
So that's why this song is perfect for the anti
rhy perfect perfect.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
I take it back, I take it back, A five
nine two eighty seven.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
You are so ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
All right, So let's do our Draft Kings pick of
the week. I'll just pick the game. I'm giving tickets
away too. At the end of the show. Padres and Reds.
Uh tonight who's pitching for the Reds. They're gonna pitch
Nick Martinez, so they're vulnerable tonight against Dylan Cease, who
I don't know. These two teams are are going for
the wild card in Cincinnati.
Speaker 8 (35:31):
Who you got Padres by four by four?
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Okay, all right, go to DraftKings bet five with one
hundred and fifty dollars. Pick them by four. You probably
get good odds on that.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
What about you Padres by six six?
Speaker 2 (35:44):
I bet you couldna get even better on its on that?
All right?
Speaker 7 (35:47):
I know the Reds can't have it too good, and
they've been on, they've been hot, just played the Yankees. Well,
they gotta come down. I say, Padres by one.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Yeah, so they pitch.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
They get Abbot Lodolo in Game two and three, so
I think those are better better get. This is the
one to lose, I would think. So I actually will
take Padres by uh sweep two. I think this is
just not their night, and the Padres are favorite, so
I think that's probably.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
We're talking baseball. I mentioned one thing. The Legends have
a dude who have hit a home run in eight
straight games.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
It's like the.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
Atlantic League record. Really, Yeah, Dylan Rock has a home
run now in eight straight games.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
Do they play home this weekend?
Speaker 1 (36:22):
No, they're out of town this weekend.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Eight straight games. That is a great game if you
get a chance. If you haven't seen it, everyone is
mocking on the internet.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
You know.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
This weekend is the big Jeff Bezos wedding, considered to
be arguably the most expensive wedding outside of the Royal
wedding in the history of humankind. They basically shut down
the city of Venice for this wedding, stopped all boats
into the city, have rented a ton of planes in
Italy to keep people. So maybe the most expensive wedding ever.
(36:54):
Apparently it's like the ceremony is crazy, all this stuff,
but the internet is making fun of Have you seen
their invitations?
Speaker 4 (37:01):
No?
Speaker 8 (37:01):
No, I didn't get one.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
Pull it up on your phone at some point. Look
up at Jeff Bezos for a wedding that is the
most expensive wedding at all time. It looks like they
made it on Microsoft paint. It's literally it's the kind
of invitation I would give you to say, Hey, we're
having a special at ks Bar on Saturday. During the
game of all the things they put money into the
Internet is like, these are the worst invitations ever. So
(37:24):
if you women, especially, I think you're gonna like think
it's absurd. Look, she's laughing right here, aren't they awful?
That's an awful invitation for a wedding where they're spending
that there it is right there. I like, I'm there.
Speaker 7 (37:37):
It says, please, no gifts, you wasted drink. I'm not
bringing you a gift, Jeff Bezos, you don't need a gift.
Speaker 8 (37:43):
So will the wedding beyond Amazon Prime? Can we watch it?
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Like over the week. I would say to Mario if
Mario made that graphic promoting a remote, I would tell
him to do it again, Like, that's that's how bad
he's looking like it's the criticism. No, I'm not talking
about you. I'm just saying that is how bad that.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
Is, Mario looks.
Speaker 8 (38:00):
It's so bad that even you could do better.
Speaker 7 (38:04):
But to take up every detail like renting boats and
keeping planes on the ground, they're basic closing shops. How
do you overlook the invitation they.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
I don't think people are realizing they are shutting down
the city of Venice during Jubilee once every twenty five years,
Catholic celebration on a Saturday in the summer. I can't
even imagine how much that would cost.
Speaker 7 (38:29):
Used to be an astronaut, you get special treatment, unbelievable.
Speaker 8 (38:32):
I would just set out a group text for an invitation.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
You just donate to charity. Good grief. Who's next? I
know he does, but still go ahead.
Speaker 9 (38:43):
Well back when he had a comment, you guys had
a conversation about retiring, and uh, I don't know who.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Well, I mean, there's listen if you were ever gonna
make and I appreciate the call, like a special exceptions
argument to I mean, like the modern equivalent of when
we were retired the ninety two guys Jerseys might be
a Darius Miller. I mean, I still they gotta do
Anthony Davis and John wall that's the next two. And
then you still have Tayshawn and Bogans. I think are
(39:17):
two more. I mean, I think those are four that
have to get done at some point whenever we start.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Doing that again.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
But then I think you go to that next group,
then there's an argument for like a special exception.
Speaker 7 (39:28):
Darius Miller one, I think there should be there at
the rate they're going there on pace to do that
in about five hundred years. That's my biggest complaint with
the u K. That's their blind spot. I know it
doesn't really matter, but it's been so long since they've
retired a football number. We have a huge list of
basketball numbers that should already be up there.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Swan, I mean Tayshawan's the next one. Yeah, and why
wouldn't you just do Tayshawn? Wouldn't I mean, who would
not love to have Tayshawn back in Rupperena next.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Year for a Jersey retirement? I mean, that would be awesome.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
He is. First of all, you're getting close to twenty five.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
Years since he here.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I mean, how much long you're gonna wait? Then next
year do Bogans, and then do all and then do
David Because those four are uncontroversial, right right, No one's
gonna say those four shouldn't be done. They should be done.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
We should be doing one a year for the next
four years.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Seah with you guys. I think it's one of the
coolest things Kentucky does. But why don't they do it
more often? I just don't understand why they have to
wait Tony Dilk I think was the last one, and
that was what ten years ago, Tony.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Delk played thirty years ago. Like, let's go ahead and
get I mean, who's gonna argue with Tayshaw? Does anybody
believe Tayshaw shouldn't be on there, because.
Speaker 7 (40:32):
I'm out of the building if they do.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
Yeah, So bring him in.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
His arms are so long he can touch the roof
when he does the Why, let's go ahead and do it.
Who's next, Matt, Matt, go ahead, Matt.
Speaker 9 (40:44):
Hey, Matt quick question. Just wanted to know when the
trivia final was gonna be and then also wanted to
know about the Cassidy Row situation. We hadn't heard about
that in a while. I like Coach Brooks, but it
seems like the roster is not complete, so I just
wanted to hear something.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Well, Okay, So first of all, on the trivia thing,
we're gonna do it as part of our opening. So
we're gonna make one of our soft openings the trivia finals.
So it's gonna end up being probably second or third
week of August, so it'll be we'll do it as
one of our soft opening.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
So actually, the people in the trivia finals. Will see
the new.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Restaurant before other people are, so I will let you
know the date. But that's that's the current plan. Cassidy
Rowe situation. I haven't heard anything else about. Do we
know where she's She's not going to school anywhere else, right,
She's gonna go to school. Here's what I would say
about it. And again I was, I was out when
this was all going on, and so my I didn't
have strong opinions. The same people that kind of got
(41:42):
on Ryan when he said yesterday he wouldn't cut his
son are a lot of the same people that had
a strong opinion about cutting Cassidy Row essentially, and those
are inconsistent opinions, right, I mean there, I think there
is more to that situation than the general public knows.
And I to defer to the coach in those situations.
(42:03):
So I'm not I'm not I'm not taking a strong view.
I wasn't there, But I think, you know, I think
Kenny Brooks deserves in year two some some grace on it.
And he's been loading up on players too. We have
an unbelievable ross. I mean, next year will be good,
but then starting the next year, dude is gonna is
loading up at Kentucky. Thank you all very much here
