Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good day, everybody. Welcome in to the Monday edition of
The Leach Report, presented by Bobcat Enterprises. It's Shuffle being
coffee Monday Morning Quarterback Day. Van Hiles will be with
us to talk about Kentucky's win at Auburn, and then
toward the end of the show, we'll bring in Darren
Hendrick for a preview of the opener for Kentucky women's basketball. Tonight,
(00:22):
wild Cat News of the Day presented by Giuseppes of Lexington.
We'll start with volleyball, as that's the most recent big
event for UK athletics. Number three Kentucky goes into Austin
and sweeps number two Texas three zip to go to
eighteen and two and stay perfect in the sec. Twenty
kills for Ava Hudson, eighteen for Brooklyn Delay. Kentucky's the
(00:46):
first team to sweep Texas on its home court in
volleyball in twelve years, and for what I hear of
the folks who cover volleyball day in and day out,
puts Kentucky in a great spot to have an opportunity
to host all the way to a potential Final four
and big big win. Yesterday in a dominant one for
(01:09):
coach Skinners squad football. Kentucky goes into Auburn and beats
the Tigers ten to three. Auburn fired coach Hugh Freese yesterday.
That came as no surprise. The three points for Auburn
the fewest in a home game since twenty twelve. Kentucky
had seven sacks and twelve tackles for loss. Just an
(01:31):
incredibly impressive performance when you consider a week earlier they
had their worst game of the season against Tennessee. Brad
White and Jeff mccaura and I were chatting at the
hotel for our pregame meeting Friday night, and he had
just come from Brad had just come from meeting with
his guys and he told us a story that we
(01:52):
mentioned on the air, and he told it the postgame
how he had been asked by the media the media
session on Wednesday back in Lexing about if he thought,
you know, the defense would bounce back, and he said
he was confident he would they would because of the
character that they had, and he relayed that to his
players and told him that he believed in them and
(02:14):
trusted them to put their best performance out there, and man,
did they ever do that game. Ball went to cam
Miller for the defensive play of the game. And yes,
this is the wide receiver cam Miller. When he knocks
the ball loose late from an Auburn player that had
(02:36):
intercepted it, Cutter got hit as he threw and so
it was just fluttering down the fields, an easy pick
for the Auburn player and he is running it back
toward midfield. Cam Miller doesn't quit on the play, comes
flying up. Saw an opportunity played defensive back in high school,
saw an opportunity to punch the ball out and he did,
and Boyer recovered it, and then Kentucky was able to
(02:56):
run off some more time, make Auburn use up a
couple of its time out and big big play and
then punt Auburn back into a much worse field position.
So and Aiden Laross, the punter, had a tremendous game.
Six punts out inside the twenty yard line in a
very important field position. Game mentioned the opener for women's
(03:16):
basketball number twenty. Kentucky hosting Morehead State at Historic Memorial
Colisseum at six thirty Eastern SEC network plus UK Radio network.
We'll have the call, Well, it'll be on the secondary
station in the markets where that's an option, and then
(03:37):
go to it right after the Coaches Show tonight with
Coach Stews, but the six thirty tip at the Cadd'llseum
tonight for Kentucky women's basketball, opening up the second season
under coach Kenny Brooks. Thanks to the stories that we
talk about, you can find them Meach today on the
bud lightly Triport page that's at Tom Leachky dot com.
(03:58):
We'll come back and start talking football with air Man
Van Hiles. Our opening segment always presented by Giuseppes of Lexington.

that's really hard to buy for, a Juseppes gift card
is a great way to go. We'll be right back
with Van. It's the lead treport. Monday Morning Quarterback edition
(04:41):
always presented that part by shuffle being coffee and after
the game on Saturday night, SCC's networks Alyssa Lang caught
up with Mark Snoops to talk about the win at Auburn.
This is on the SEC Network.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Coach, this team has talked so much about the brotherhood
has grown throughout the course of the season. You at
the top of that, what does this one mean to
you and your career with this program.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
It means an awful lot. You know, we've been I
can't lie we've been. It's one victory, but we've been
through a lot and it's been a long time. Let's
be honest, and so it means a lot. It's it's uh,
it's emotional. You're trying to get me to cry. Congrats coming,
thank you.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
You could hear the kind of crack and Mark Stoop's
voice there, very proud of what his guys went out
and did. We bring in a former Wildcat and the
NFL player Van Hiles, who joins us each Monday to
talk about the games, and that was quite a performance
by the Wildcats on Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Man, Yeah, it was man. It was great to see
the kids get the results that they won after plan
or all season, and it's a good feeling to see
those guys happy, Joe us celebrating for a game that
(06:03):
is so hard to win in this conference and to
finally get an SEC win again on the road. It
was a It was a great filming Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
And a lot of tremendous things to talk about, but
just the overview, I want to start with the defensive side,
because you know, inside of the ball you played on
and you know that those guys, I know were embarrassed
by what they put on tape in the Tennessee game
and they had a matchup where they were in a
(06:36):
mismatch on the outside with the wide receivers, and you know,
it's if you're in that situation. Uh, there are things
they certainly could have done better, but you know, they
needed to do what Oklahoma did in terms of forcing
some turnovers to have a chance, and they were not
able to do that. And so I don't want to
spend any more time on that because we want to
(06:57):
talk about the performance against Auburn to bounce back a
week later is not the easiest thing to do. I
guess for an athlete, I guess there's one one of
two ways you can go at that point you're two
and five. You could let go of the rope, or
you can get mad and come back and do what
they did on Saturday night, right right.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I'll say this, The great thing about athletes are we
are creature of habit, and Monday is the next day,
prepared for the next opponent for the next week. Each
week is its own individual week. And if you play
it that way, you can forget. You can eliminate the
joy of winning that can make up be a problem
(07:37):
for the next week in the next opponent, and also
the agony of losing by just getting yourself ready to
prepare the next week. And I would say this, this
locker room has to be back to Stoops level locker room.
These guys have to be playing for each other. They
have to be pulled, as you said, pulling the same rope.
They are playing hard when they're going through at versity.
(07:58):
And that's a difficult ain't for young men to do.
Is when these are not going your way, to keep
going and to keep fighting, and it's showing they have
not given up this season. As you said last week,
as we talked about the weeks prior, is that we
knew that October was gonna be a hard month for
us and for those guys. To hear all the things
that have been saying outside of Joe Kraft Center and
(08:21):
to play like that have been playing these last few
weeks says a lot about that locker room and that
scene leadership.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
When we talked about the Tennessee game, we talked about
the matchup issue. Auburn was on the other side of
that on Saturday. They lost their starting center game before last.
And so the guy that's in that role now is
the youngest player in FBS football, seventeen years old, Ellis.
I can't remember his first name. And I remember, you know,
(08:52):
looking at that and thinking, I like Kentucky's matchup here.
I like David Gusta against him. And then when they
would do things in the past rush and they had
the guys like Saunders on the inside playing essentially a
defensive tackle with his hand on the ground, they just
ate that poor kid up.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Yeah, they I saw that out after the game. Yes,
that was That's the thing you gotta take advantage of.
Your matchups. That's what Tennessee did to us, that we
probably took advantage of all matchups. It's not like I mean,
if you're being honest, if you look at the games
as an entirety, the defense didn't play back for the
last week. They just couldn't match up on outside. It'd
(09:32):
be something to be said if this was the first
time that defensive line has given a team trouble. This
is something they've been doing all year now. They really
saw blood in the water and really became sharks because
they knew that this young guy could not handle the
likes of what we have in the front four. It's
great for me to see as a defensive back that
(09:56):
we could provide the pressure that we did. We're only
bringing four. I know a lot of people think we
were listening a lot. We did not. I charted us
blitzing three or four times, and for us to get
as many sacks, as many hurrys, as many pressures that
we did all night shows that we really took advantage
of their weakness. And that's what you have to do
weekend and week out. Different matchups creates different problems in
(10:19):
different schemes, and we did our best on the front
four with the steps and stuff we did on Saturday
was really drawful to watch as a dB and.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Just out of fairness to the young man at Auburn,
the center again, true freshman Maxwell Harriston in his first year,
gets thrown in late against the Vanderbilt game at Kroger Field,
and they have I forget who got hurt, but somebody
cat hurt and Max wasn't playing. Okay, Carrington gets hurt.
(10:53):
So Max gets thrown out there in a I want
to say it was like third and long, fourth and
third long, and he goes right at him, completes a
long pass and that guy came back last night and
picked off Patrick Mahomes to clinch the game against for
the Buffalo Bills. So you know, out of the fairness
to the young man at Auburn, it can't get better
(11:15):
if you keep working at it like like Max did.
But anyway, back to this game, the defensive play of
the game, the guy who got the game ball for
it was a wide receiver Cam Miller. That was a
pretty special play to that young man. Tried not to
(11:35):
call him kids too often. That young man is impressing
me time and time again. Clutch catches, he makes the routes,
he runs and but then to do that, and he
was a former dB. He was part of your family.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
He's a football player. That's that's what we need more of,
like the Limb Boldens, who are just football player Randall
Randall exactly. Those are guys that Anthony White was a
football player. He played on defense for a little bit.
People don't know about, Dyke. Those are the guys that
you need on the football team. But I'm gonna pause
(12:12):
you a little bit. And the defensive player of the
game for me, honestly, what's the first player of the game.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
I hold that right there because I've got a clip
from Brad White talking about the guy you're going to
talk about. And let me get the break in here.
We'll come back and get to that. It is the
Leach Report Shuffle being coffee Monday morning quarterback condition, and
we're coming to you from the Clark's Pumping Shop studio, Return,
Refresh and refuel at Clark's. It's the Leach Report, presented
(12:38):
each day by Bob Kat Enterprises. And we are talking
with Van Hiles. And let me get this SoundBite up here.
I forgot to mention it to the Shannon, it is
uh Brad White one, Shannon, if you can pull that
one up for us, And this is him talking about
Nasir Addison, the cornerback who was pressed into his starting role,
(13:00):
his first one since after Ryan Nichols was injured in Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Really really proud of him. I mean, I thought he
played really really well all day long. And you know what,
it was a tone setter, right you think about Okay,
they wanted to test him and see if he could
tackle a hitch out to the field and for him
to pind you know, Cam Coleman down on that first
one and then say, like I thought all day long,
I thought JQ played a heck of a game. PBu
(13:28):
sticky at the DBS all day were sticky in their coverage. Again,
I thought it was a complete defensive team effort.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
That was Brad White after the game, but he started
out talking about the guy you want to talk about,
Van Hiles, and that's the Sir Addison go to.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
It man that that first play was everything. I think
my wife thought I was crazy because you knew, you
knew it was going to happen. And you can see
the coaches on the sideline. You see coach Collins. He
receiver for the staff. Always already he's getting ready for
(14:04):
what's gonna happen. He gets in the football stands, great stands,
knee ben flex and everything ready for what's gonna happen.
And when he made that tackle, that break and to
only I think it was a five to six short
game solo tackle, good reaction, good technique, good everything. I'm
gonna say that set me at ease for the rest
(14:27):
of the game. And I know it set those guys
at ease because now you don't have to change your
game plan to help that guy out the entire game.
If he can make an open field tackle on their
best player on offense, you are gonna be good for
the rest of the game. And he did it again.
He did miss one, which I mean that guy cam
(14:47):
Coleman is one of the best receivers in the conference.
You're gonna miss a tackle or two. But for him
to hold up on the outside like he did in
his first start was everything for this game.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
And he's a guy that I know earlier on they
were very high on. And sometimes you know you it
doesn't happen quickly. A mentioned Maxwell Harriston doesn't happen quickly
for you. If you keep working at it, you can
have the breakthrough and who knows where you know, it's
got to be a tremendous shot of confidence for a
guy who wasn't getting a lot of opportunity and now
(15:21):
he gets it, like Cam Walliet or Cam Miller down
to Georgia. You get your chance. And if you make
a play, obviously people notice and they what it is.
I guess you gain trust from your coaches.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
That's it, because I tell people this all the time.
I play both positions. Cornerback is the toughest position. Cornerback
is the second toughest because you were out there by
yourself on an island, and when we make a mistake
at corner everyone knows it and there's no one that
can back us up the majority of the time. So
are you truly out there on an island by yourself
(15:54):
in a team game? And when you can do the
things that he did, and like you just said, it
gained trust. It puts Coach White at ease because I
can call the game like I want to call it.
I can allow my front for as you said, Dad,
young offense alignment. I can call the game like I
want to and I don't have to change team because
(16:14):
I have this young corner out here by himself, and
I got to protect them for every player of the game.
Now I can leave him out here on fifty percent
of the plays and see if he can hold his
on and then I can do what I want to
do in the front and with everybody else.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
The leading sack man for Kentucky on the season, they
only got credit for I think a half of one
on Saturday, and it felt like to be doing the
game that he was there about every time he was
in there, Steven Soles, it looks like a running back
going up against offensive tackles in the SEC. How is
he doing what he does?
Speaker 4 (16:48):
To be a good pass rusher, you have to have
great technique, that is one thing they all have to do.
But you have to be relentless, and he was relentless
on the one late in the game where he he
went on the stunt he came inside, he was crawling
on the ground. I don't know if he got the
half on that one, because I think Khalib Madder got
the full, but that play shows his tenacity. That kid
(17:11):
has shown it all year and for him to be
that young and to have that motor. He's gonna only
get better because his technique is gonna get better with
experience and with coaching. But one thing you can't coaches
effort and attitude and motor, and that kid brings it
every game, even when it's not a great game for him.
You don't see him loafing a lot or at all.
(17:32):
He's always bringing energy and effort and that's something that
you can key on for the rest of his career.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Here talking with Van Hiles, you can follow him on
x and see his cutups after each game and V
Style seventeen. They're up for the Auburn game, and also
on Wednesday nights at nine eastern the Locker podcast on
YouTube and other podcast platforms that he does with another
former wild Cat, Anthony White, and you can see those
(17:58):
at nine eastern time on Wednesdays. It's our Shuffle being
coffee Monday morning quarterback edition of the Leitch Report, and
we'll continue with Van whill we come right back. It's
the Lead Report present m by Bobcat Enterprises for locations around
Kentucky for when you need to buy or rent some
heavy equipment or you know someone who does for their
job for project send them to Bobcat Enterprises. Go there yourself,
(18:20):
Google them. You'll find the location that's closest to you.
Fantastic service after the sale as well, and they have
zero turn moors for your home lawn. If you might
be in the market for one of those, time could
be good to get a good deal. Van Hiles joining
us and we're talking about Kentucky's ten to three win
at Auburn. We want to shift over and talk a
little bit about the offensive side. Van Cutter, Bowlie, was
(18:45):
you talked about this in the cutups you do at
V Style seventeen that folks can see that he wasn't
as sharp as he was the week before. Maybe Auburn's
defense had something to do with that. They played differently,
lot of man demand for that Auburn defense, which is
very good and brought a lot of pressure and they're
very aggressive, and I think you used the phrase you
(19:07):
can see the picture was not clear for Cutter. What
impressed me though, is that after he threw that interception
that let Auburn tie the game at halftime, he came
out and completed eleven straight passes in the second half,
So he fought through it.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Yeah, and that's I'm gonna tell you that's the difference.
The quarterback play for us is a difference in us
having chance to win games. I'm also say that the
football guys were with us too, because they were a
couple of situations, a couple pass that could have been
picked off, that passed the fairier down their sideline to
(19:46):
lead to the score, the count punch out, like all
those things happened for me because the guys are doing
stuff right during the week. I've been thought that if
you do these right during the week, you prepare like
he's supposed to prepare the football guys on your side.
And even though Cutter was not as accurate as he's
been the last three games, he's preparing, he's decisive, he's
(20:10):
doing the things right, like even the intercession before half,
that was not a bad decision. It wasn't the best throw.
He's doing the things how he's supposed to. And things
are going to happen in your favor when you were
doing everything right. And for him to fight, being a
leader of offense, to continue to have that swagger and
confidence in himself, it permeates through the whole team, and
(20:32):
that's to me the difference of what's happening this year
and why we are fighting so hard when things are
not going well, And that's the reason why we won
this game.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
I think there's a play you highlighted. I can't remember
what point of the game it was, but he Auburn's
bringing pressure and they run, they bring Catus in motion.
The Auburn defender follows him, so he knows he's got
man demand and the defender, as you point out, was
going to get tangled up in some traffic and uh
(21:01):
get make it difficult for him to stay with Caddis.
And then Caddus gets open wheeling up the sideline, and
you said Cutter hesitated on delivering it. There was one
he missed late. There was a kill shot he would
on a post pattern the gilboard who was wide open,
and he he missed him like he did Macklin down
(21:23):
at Georgia. So you know, that's that's an element of
his game that I would imagine will get a lot
better with the more time and reps. And once it does,
he's going to be hitting some some more explosives. But
what are you seeing there? What does he need to
do better?
Speaker 4 (21:40):
I mean, honestly, it's easy for me to see it
from the angle I'm seeing it from and to say, Okay,
this is what happened. I do this to show people
what the player is supposed to look like. It is
hard for a quarterback, especially young quarterback, to pre snap
understand all the options, and I think he got fooled.
And if it was manag on, he was prober afraid
(22:03):
that corner was gonna peel off and maybe be affect
that throw because the distribution of the routes were kind
of close. But if you look at it from a
quarterback standpoint, how I was taught is you got to
just trust it. And when you know a guy has
a chance to be open, you cannot be scared to
throw interception in this league. So that's the thing is
(22:25):
I want him to rip it. I think he saw
it because he's looking right at it, he's looking in
that direction. I think he saw it. I think he
was apprehensive of throwing interception. Those are things that you
cannot worry about. Tim Tim comes through five picks in
the game. You know what, Tim Coup doesn't worry about
throwing another pick, because when you worry about throwing another picks,
when you throw one. So I just want him to
(22:46):
see the picture, know the picture, and just let it
rip because he has the talent. I know he's process made.
The process isn't as we wanted to be, but he
sees it. He's just not trusting it. He's got to
just have to trust it.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
And you know it. You can understand it if you're
especially a young quarterback in a game like that where
every play is so big, because you know how difficult
that is. You know it is on that night to score. Uh,
and one big play like the one that you know
cam Miller prevented late could could be huge. So it
(23:22):
is part of the maturing process. But he he has
certainly come a long way in about a little over
a month, hasn't he.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Yeah, And that's that's all. That's Reps are reps. Reps
are so important. Just reps are important.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
The game.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
Reps are way more important because now you can see
what the defense is given you, how they're presenting it,
how they are adjusted. And now the more snaps he gets,
now he can say, as the pro quarterbacks, oh I've
seen that already, I know you're coming. I know what
coverage y'all play because I've seen it before. I'm not
going to get full. Another year or two on his belt,
he will not get full, and he will definitely make
(23:58):
that the next time. I'll see you gonna make those
later in the season that he wouldn't have made in
week five or six. So all this is a process
and he's learning to on the fire. I guess unfortunately
it's in a test on the fire because of what
the slaive of the program and the expectation of the program.
But as a whole, this offense has gotten better since
(24:19):
he's been instituted as the Stone quarterback.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
We're gonna take quick break, come back, one more segment
with Van Hiles on Iris shuffle being colledee Monday morning
Quarterback Edition to The Leach Report, and then a little
later we'll bring in Darren Hedrick to talk about Kentucky
women's basketball opening the season. Tonight. It is The Leach
Report Radio Network.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Someone asked the question, they said, Hey, what gives you
hope about this weekend? And I said, the character in
that locker room, and I knew the guys were going
to respond, and they did and they were awesome all
day long. On the sideline, it was a locked in
locker room at halftime. You know, the conversation by the players,
not by the coaches, was, Hey, if they don't score
in the second half, right, we're winning this ball game.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
That's Brad White talking about. As to the media afterward,
what Van and I were talking about in the opening segment,
just how confident he was and his guys bouncing back. Van.
Let's throw a little love to the punter. Aiden la
Ross had his best game. I think given the circumstances.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Right, Yes, the special teams were special, and for I
don't think, as coach ought you that you could teach us.
And I remember this is if the opponent starts inside
the twenty yard line, they have a ten percent chance
of putting points on the board. And when they consistently
(25:40):
started inside the fifteen or ten yard line, because of
the great punts and the great punt coverage is it
was gonna be hardening the march on this defense. Even
if they get a couple first downs. A lot of
teams not gonna march ninety yards on you. And that
was so important in this game. It gave the defense
a little more than the error. We could up a
first down or two and not lose too much field position.
(26:03):
Because of that also sets the other off of the
coordinator's certain plays he can't call when he's taking naps
close to his goal line. That was the difference maker
in this game. I thought Larrow should deserve the game
ball just as much as cam Miller did.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
That's a great point. You said something on one of
your cutups at v Styles seventeen when you were talking
about Cutter, and you said, you know, he got through
a game when he didn't have his a game maybe
and was solid enough to get them to the win.
You said, because they're gonna need him next week. So
(26:38):
tell to me a little bit about why that is.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Well, Well, I knew, and I've said that this defense
is top three in the conference Oklahoma, Auburn, and Texas.
And I knew this game was going to be like
the game we played at home against Texas. And we
can stem the tide and be in the game in
the fourth quarter, we'll have a chance to win this
next game. Florida is similar to Tennessee. They have a
(27:04):
good defense, they have athletes, they have a good pass rush,
all the good things, but they're just not as solid
as the two teams they have played prior in Texas
in Auburn, this is a game where if he's on
his best like he was against Tennessee, he can pass
for three hundred and two hundred and eighty yards. We
can rush for another one fifty. These are the teams
(27:25):
of defense that you got to take advantage of because
they are not as great as the two teams that
they play in Texas Auburn. This is a game for
the offense to really show their progress in this season
and put together a solid game because honestly, Florida has
an offense. I know they lost their best wide receiver,
but they have a lot of talent on that side
of field, on the perimeter, which is something that we
(27:47):
have had problems with.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Yeah, the freshman wide out Dallas Wilson injured his foot
in the Georgia game on Saturday, and they are saying
that he is going to miss the rest of the season.
It didn't have huge numbers, but very explosive guy that could,
you know, burst out at any moments. So that is
a tough loss for the Gators. And that's something else
I wanted to let you touch on a little bit
(28:11):
of your segment with Anthony White. Larry vault Jack Pilgrim,
Bo Robinson on the Sunday Morning sports talk show yesterday
here in Lexington, and you guys were talking about NFL prospects,
and you said in one of your cut ups later
that there was one you neglected to mention.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Yeah, Josh Katis is having a really solid year. He
is in that mode of John Rigg who didn't kind
of flew under the radar and made an NFL team
for some years. I don't know if he's still on
the team now, but he has that ability. He is
a inline blocker, but has shown that he's good in
(28:51):
the passing game. There were some things that happened yesterday.
I mean the will rob we talked about earlier, his
ability to mirror the quarterback when they're under the rest,
his ability to define as we call green grass or
open windows. He has become a capable guy in the
passing game, and there are not that many of those
(29:11):
guys who can do both. And if he can do both,
he has a chance to make a team next year
because I think coming back this year has done him
well because he's proven that he can do a lot
of things that a old school tight end used to
be able. To do, and I think he has a chance.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
Man Hole's always a pleasure and especially fun to break
this down after a win for the first time in
a while, So hopefully they can make a two in
a row against the Gators. We'll talk to you next week.
Man so good at V Style seventeen on X and
The Locker on Wednesday nights at nine on YouTube with
(29:51):
Van and Anthony White, Cord Brad Hamp p Hass some
exciting news right now. They have opened a brand new
retail store right inside their production facility INI. So if
you'd like to see how those CBD gummies and the
seltzers and all of that come together, and you're in
that area, you can make plans to do that and
you can take a tour and get a up close look,
(30:14):
and you can purchase all of their products while you're there.
If you're not close enough to do that, well, use
the store locator at cornbredhamp dot com. You can find
a retailer near you, or just order online at cornbredhamp
dot com. It'll be delivered straight to your door. If
you use the code TOM at checkout and you're a
first time customer, you'll get an extra twenty percent off
of your order, which could include the new four pack
(30:36):
of those infew Seltzers, Blueberry Breeze, raspberry limeade, peach iced tea,
salted watermelon, all in one convenient box. We'll be right back.
It's the Late Report, presented by Bob kat Enterprises. We
welcome Darren Headrick to the program. He's the voice of
UK Women's basketball Kentucky baseball, and the UK women open
up season two out of Kenny Brooks tonight against Warheads State.
(30:57):
And they have a bunch of sh shooters, Darren, because
I saw the roster and that's all everybody's listed as.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Yeah, I guess this is part of that new era
of college basketball positionless teams now, so everybody's a shooter.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
I think Vandy did that last year the SEC for
the men or something like that. Maybe everybody was a
point guard I forget which. Yeah, anyway, so we know
they have shooters. They also have a new coach, right,
what a familiar name.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Yeah, yeah, that's a name very familiar to Kentucky fans.
It's Ashton Feldhouse, who is the niece of Darren Feldhouse
and one of the youngest. In fact, I believe she
might be the youngest coach in Division one women's college basketball.
So but yeah, Moorhead State is brand new from top
(31:47):
to bottom, new coach, new staff. They only have one
returning player off last year's roster, and so there's a
lot of unknowns about this team. But herd coach Feldhouse
earlier this feet and talk about their style. They're wanting
to get up and down the floor, and they are
hoping to shoot around thirty five or more three pointers
(32:08):
a game. So they're going to try even though they're
going to be a smaller team against Kentucky tom they're
going to try to get or force Kentucky to move
laterally around the court.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
The feld House name is very familiar one basketball in
this state. Allan sor and I grew up in Bourbon County,
grew up in the tenth region, and Allan senior was
at Mason County and was a dynamic force in that region.
And then two of his sons, Allen Junior, won a
state championship with Madison Central. Willie had a successful coaching career.
(32:44):
Darren of course the part of the unforgettables here at
UK and he became a went into golf and pursued
his career in that area, so didn't get it. He's
the one that didn't get into coaching. But anyway, it's
a name that they know how to coach. The fell
House there. Right, let's talk about Kentucky and the team
(33:08):
that Kenny Brooks is going to put on the court,
very tall, very long. He was talking at the media day,
I guess was last week. They're not going to lead
the league in steels, but they do hope to lead
the league in block shots. Again.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Yeah, their defensive style is fun to watch tom and
especially when you have the triplets down low, Amelia Hassett,
tianni Key and Clara Strack who runs sixty four, sixty
five and sixty five. What they want to do defensively
is funnel you towards their shot blockers, force you into
bad shots, block your shot, and then that's sort of
(33:42):
you know, where you can generate points off steals. This
is how Kentucky wants to generate their offense is block
shots and bad shots, grabbing rebounds and getting out and going.
So it's a fun defensive style to watch, and obviously
it was breaking records last year.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Clara Strack was the most accomplished of those three last season,
so we know what she's capable of. Talk to us
about what you think the growth potential is for the
other two members of the triplets.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
So tianni Key I think is emerging the year as
a vocal leader. That's something that her and Clara actually
have both been working on in the offseason. I think
Tiani is striving for consistency, and I think she would
be one to tell you that last year she was
sort of up and down, foul trouble here, some great
(34:37):
knights on the floor there. She wants to be more
consistent this year, be a vocal leader. And then I
think Amelia Hassett's going to be the X factor for
this team alongside Jordan Obie. Hassett is a matchup nightmare
tom a six' four playing the, three sometimes playing the,
four could play the two if that's where they need,
(34:57):
her but she shoots the three ball at a high.
Clip she can get in there and rebound and mix
it up as. Well so you're talking about two players
For kentucky right there that as they take that next
step and get more comfortable And kenny's system could help
this team go.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
Far new point Guard Tony morgan heard her on The
Sunday Morning sports talk show. Yesterday she's very, impressive as
was the young lady that she, Follows Georgia. Amore so
different kind of point. Guard what Will Tony morgan look
like running the.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Show, well she's still getting used To kenny's, system but
she has progressed a long way and learning, it getting
comfortable in it and doing the things he wants to.
Do i've heard him a few times SAY i don't
want you to Wear georgia's, SHOES i want you to
bring your. Own and she is still putting all that.
Together but she's very. Explosive she obviously she averaged about
(35:49):
six assists the game last. Year she's about thirty two
away from five hundred dollars. Career but a very intelligent
player out there and just continues to get more. Comfortable
he's going to be dynamic in this system as we go.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Along you'll be on the call there at court side
