All right now from the LA Times, he thinks Dave Roberts should get a
contract extension. We welcome on DylanHernatez and Dylan, thanks for jumping on
on this Monday. No, thankyou for having me on. Okay,
let's start with what you wrote,Dave Roberts. Last next year will be
(00:44):
the final year of his deal, and you're saying they should extend him right
now. Yeah, I mean,I just don't see him going anywhere.
Frankly, you know, I thinkthat if they don't win the World Series,
it's going to be kind of whatwe saw, you know, last
year and the year before where theyjust kind of didn't have the starting pitching
right now, they could address thatbetween now and the trade deadline. But
(01:07):
you know, I think that's probablymore likely the scenario than him just kind
of you know, you know, just detonating the whole thing, you know,
And in that case, why kindof subject him and the team to
kind of the speculation that we allknow is going to come come October?
Right? I mean, and thisis kind of the same story every October.
(01:27):
You know, it's usually the blamefinds a way, you know,
the ball always finds the ways Kershaw'shands, you know, in those certain
moments. You know, so usuallyKershall takes those share of the blame and
then it's Roberts, you know. And I just think, you know,
if again, if if the focusis really to win a world Series,
why not just kind of eliminate thatdistraction, right, you know. And
I know it's like a different sportwhatever, but you know, we just
(01:49):
saw in the Copa America with theUS men's national team, you know,
with Greg Berhalter and the speculation overhis future. You know, you can't
tell me that that didn't affect thatteam, And so I'm just kind of
thinking, you know what I meanhere, I mean, they've had this
guy for ten years now, theyalready know what they're going to get out
of him. You know, youlook at just kind of all the problems
that he kind of smooths out overthe course of the season. I mean,
(02:12):
a lot of stuff has happened thisyear, right, and the fact
that like we're here, you know, in July and kind of everything seems
normal and okay, everything's going tokind of go to the playoffs. I
think you speak. I do thinkreally speaks to his ability to kind of
manage teams and situations. All right, So let me play devil's advocate,
and first in theory, I agreewith what you're saying. Okay, so
we'll acknowledge that. Now, letme play devil's advocate. They spent the
(02:36):
money, they have Otani, they'reall in, they signed John Momoto.
Everything is geared toward them winning aWorld Series, not getting to the playoffs
and eliminate it. And also notwell, you know, he didn't have
the pitching. This is it andif it doesn't work, somebody's going to
get it because somebody has to getit. And I believe that they may
(02:58):
take a weight and see approach.I don't think they want to move Dave
Roberts at all, I think theywant him to be here for as many
years as he wants. Ten moreyears. But on the other hand,
Dylan, if they keep coming upshort, somebody's got to get it,
you know what I mean, Yeah, I do. And you know,
and this is where again the theOtani contract is so important, right,
(03:21):
is because the you know, there'sa clause in his deal that says if
Mark Walter, the owner, orif Andrew Friedman, the president of Baseball
Ops, go anywhere, he canthen opt out of his contract, you
know, And so that kind ofprotects Friedman, right, And you know,
I do think there has been youknow, over the years, right,
you can kind of go year byyear, and Okay, who's more
at fault between kind of Friedman andRoberts And I do think over the last
(03:43):
couple of years, right, it'sbeen more a function I think them getting
eliminated up like roster construction. Right. So, if anything, you're probably
looking at pre Now I'm not sayingthat free you know, I would sign
Freedman to a lifetime contract. Don'tget me wrong. I don't think he
should go anywhere, but you know, I'm also kind of not of this,
like, Okay, well, theyjust kind of need a change stace
to change things because a lot ofyou know, I know, people look
(04:03):
at that one point whatever billion spentone I think it was one point three
billion spent over the off season, and it's not you know, they're just
too many positions in a baseball team, right, you know, it's twenty
six man active roaster. And youknow the reason that bill got up that
high, it was just kind ofcertain market forces there, right. And
(04:23):
that said, for a team thathas its high a payroll, this is
a team with a lot of gaps, you know. And I don't think
again, you know, take downmy moto, right, I mean,
he got the three one hundred andtwenty five million dollar contract. I don't
think that's Dave Roberts's fault that theguy's shoulders started barking when he started bringing
sliders all of a sudden, right. And so to me, these are
not Dave Roberts problems. These arekind of you know, again, it's
(04:46):
you know, I mean, frankly, if you're going to look at something,
you know, maybe the farm system, right, I mean, you
know, despite them kind of havinghyped up their farm system as much as
they have over the years, youlook at it, it's been Walker Bueler,
and it's been Will Smith, andyou know, some role players that
sure, you know, might helpout on a particularly given season, but
the production hasn't quite been there, right, And that's what's kind of made
(05:09):
I think the team go out andhave to spend big money on you know,
I mean, right, I meanthey had Corey Sieger, who's a
Home Crown guy. Once he kindof you know, grew into free agency,
they obviously let him go because hegot too expensive. Now you pivot
to Freddie Freeman, right, andyou know which is you know, that's
a nine figure commitment, right, instead of having a guy coming up with
the minor league. So, youknow, I just think that there are
(05:30):
areas probably need to point two outsideof the manager. And again, you
know, I go and I lookat like, you know, I look
at teams like the Mets. Ilook at teams like the Padres, you
know, where you kind of seelike one thing kind of go wrong and
next thing, you know, thisthing turns into a snowball, which turns
into an avalanche, and all ofa sudden, the team, you know,
gets off track whatever it is,right, And now you know look,
(05:53):
the roster obviously has a lot todo with the Dodgers success over the
last decade, but I also thinkDave Roberts has something to do with that.
Don't disagree, as a matter offact, I do agree, but
you understand public perception and there willbe an incredible sense of frustration if they
don't get farther than they've been. And since Andrew Freeman can't get it and
(06:13):
Mark Walter's not going to get it, ultimately somebody will have to get it
because I think the fans will bethey'll be unhappy, they'll be uncomfortable,
and even though they are wrong andwho they're pointing the finger at, they're
going to want somebody to pay forthis. And I'm not saying it's gonna
happen after this year. I'm notsaying that, But I really think that's
(06:33):
the deal what I extend them, sure, because I get what you're saying.
I don't know if the fan basegets that, Dylan, Yeah,
I don't either. And that's whyactually, like I would go ahead and
extend them now, right, isbecause I do think that, you know,
right, I mean, I meantake this like I'm gonna random Wednesday.
You know, you bring in aparticular reliever, that guy gives it
(06:54):
up all of a sudden, everybody'scalling up the postgame talk show saying like,
why did Roberts bring that guy in? I mean, things just kind
of happen, right, and themanager's always the guy that people going at,
you know, right for blame. And I just kind of think that
if the organization comes down and says, look, this is off the table
now, right, We're not thisguy's not going to go anywhere. We're
committed to him. I just thinka lot of that talk will subside.
(07:15):
Right now. People might still sure, they will be frustrated obviously if the
team doesn't win, you know, but I think it will probably lead to
a more honest assessment of what's goingon other than just kind of, you
know, having a sacrificial land becausewhatever it is. You know, Let's
say they fall short this year andlike, look, as of right now,
the way they're constructed right now,you know, kind of the health
issues that they're having, my guessis that they right, they're not positioned
(07:40):
at this moment to win the WorldSeries. Now that said, they're also
not that far from it, right, I mean, they could just be
one or two trades away, youknow, one or two moves away from
that place, and you know,to kind of tear stuff down that unnecessarily
I don't think is particularly productive.I would kind of, okay, again,
take an honest assessment of where youare right now, what do we
(08:00):
have to do, What are thesacrifices that we have to make to address
those needs? And go ahead anddo that. And because ultimately, you
know, the results are going toview what determines fan satisfaction, right right,
and you know next year right, stay to fall stroke. This year,
you address those one or two things, you win. Next year,
everybody's going to be fine about it. You know. So that's kind of
the route that I would choose personally, you know, and I agree with
(08:22):
you. I understand those forces thatare there, But to me, that's
the argument for why you should extendthem, right, it's it's the organization
telling the public this guy's not thisis our guy, he's not going anywhere.
You know. You talked about assessingwhere you're at, and this is
about the time where Andrew Friedman sitsback and assesses where the team's at.
You said, a couple of moveswill make the difference. What are those
moves. Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously if they can get
(08:45):
if they can find a way toget close shapes on the White Sox,
that that takes care of a lot, right, because now you have an
age to pair with you know, again, the last couple of starts for
Glass, now I've been a littlebit shaky, but let's assume that the
you know, he can get throughthe year fine, and you know he'll
be the guy you want him tobe. You want that other starter really,
uh, you know, to bethere to you know, to kind
(09:05):
of anchor that lineup or that rotation. Sorry, you know, and now,
look the price is going to behigh, right, this is a
picture I believe with two more yearsof club control after this, this is
going to cost you your top prospects. You know. But again, kind
of go back, you know,I mean, right, Gavin Lux,
you know, a few years agocould have gotten you that type of guy.
Right, they decided like, let'shold on to him, and you
(09:28):
know, he's just kind of aguy on the roster at this point.
You know, I think you know, a year ago, you know,
Diego Kartaia was kind of the bigguy, you know on the you know,
in their farm system. You know, since then, he's kind of
had back issues, right, andthat's not to say anything about his town,
but things just kind of happen, right, And so that to me
is kind of the thing that theyhave to kind of figure out here,
(09:48):
is Okay, you know, dowe kind of put in these prospects who
again could make our lives easier downthe road. But then again, you
look at kind of their success ratewith these things over the last decade,
it hasn't been great, you know, And so to me, that's kind
of the thing here, you know, And again I'm with you on this
in terms of, look, theyspent them a ton of money. They're
kind of designed to win. Now, you know, Tawny's thirty best freeman
(10:11):
are even older than that that windowsclosing. I do think they need to
be pushing all in over these nextcouple of years to make something happen.
Yeah, one hundred percent, allright, So you would you may have
to give up your top prospect andprobably somebody from the Major league ross terra.
I would think, like a luxor somebody like that that's not going
to be overly expensive but can playevery day for the white Sox. So
(10:33):
now we talk about the picture, what other needs do they have in your
opinion, Yeah, you know,I mean if they can, if they
can add another bat obviously to kindof maybe extend that lineup a little bit.
You know, I'm kind of thinking, you look around, maybe a
guy like Grandia ros Arena might beavailable. Now again, he's gonna he's
gonna cost you something, right, you know. But that said, I
(10:54):
think they have some attractive pieces, you know. And the one thing I'll
say this about the Dodgers, theone thing that done a very good job
of is the guys they've traded.None of them have really come back to
hurt them, right in terms of, like you know, with the exception
of your Dann Alvarez, who istraded within like a month of them signing
him out of you know, outof Cuba. But everybody else, right,
they seem to kind of know,Okay, this is the guy.
(11:16):
You know, I'm sure he couldbe a major leaguer, but he's not
going to be a big star. And to me, those are kind of
the questions that they need to ask, you know, Like, to me,
frankly, like a guy like BobbyMiller should be on the table,
right, I mean, great, great arm talent. I'm personally not convinced
that he's going to ever throw strikes. Convinced, you know, consistently.
Now, maybe they might think better, they might think differently, you know,
but they know the makeup of theguy. You know, they have
(11:37):
a better idea. And to me, if I'm the right, with guys
like that, that they have tomake a determination on. Right, this
guy looks attractive, you know,he obviously has a lot of tools.
He looks attractive to other teams, you know, but if you kind of
think that there might be a reasonthat, right, he won't like to
that potential. That's the guy thatyou need a deal. Oh no,
see, I wouldn't move him untilhe got hurt. I thought he was
(12:00):
lights out. I thought he couldbe a staff as. Yeah, I
mean he's certainly right. He hadto. He has the tools for it.
And you know, honestly, that'sprobably as good as you know,
to borrow like a football term.Right, that's as good as as arm
talent that I've ever seen, youknow. I mean it's the easiest hundred
that I've seen, uh, sinceI've been around the Dodgers. Uh,
that said again, I'm not sototally sold on this yet. Right,
(12:22):
I'm not sure that the he's evergoing to gain kind of consistency with the
secondary stuff, you know, AndI totally get right and again, you
know, and that's again why I'mnot a GM here. Maybe, right,
maybe trading him is a mistake, and maybe he does go become right,
because this is a guy who hasthe potential to be for sure one
of the best pitchers in baseball. But that's also why he's going to have
(12:45):
great trade value, you know. And my guess is that, you know,
you make a deal for a guylike Cliche, maybe that's the type
of guy that you're going to haveto throw in, you know, to
get the guy who is that star. Now, uh, let me toss
this name into the mix. AndI don't know how much value he would
command given what happened Walker Buehler.Yeah, that's probably not a you know,
(13:07):
I think, right, I mean, he's not Yeah, I don't
think there's a ton of value there. I mean, because he's in a
walk year, so he's basically youknow, for any team that gets him,
he's going to be a rental.Right, So you just you're going
to have him for the end ofthe year. I think, you know,
if you're the Dodgers at this point, there's probably more value in just
kind of holding on to him andhoping that he can kind of figure things
(13:28):
out. You know. I guesshe's in Florida right now working with some
private pension coaches, and maybe youcan catch like lightning in a bottle and
that he might be able to helpyou a little bit in October. I
do think it'd be tough again forany team that's like a seller, right,
You're always trying to get stuff forthe future, so you know,
taking on Buehler's salary and you know, not getting much production at this point
probably doesn't really fit the objectives ofthose types of teams. All right,
(13:52):
Dylan, appreciate you jumping on.Thanks so much for the time. No,
thank you for having me on whatRodney extend Dave Roberts Now, I
think so, you know, it'sone thing too, you know, to
kind of wait and see be onthe last year of your deal. But
I think with all of and Iknow you know, there's a half of
(14:13):
Dodger fans or a big percentage ofDodger fans that that don't like like Dave
Roberts for whatever reason. But inthis year, with all pressure pack and
Dave Roberts doesn't hit, he doesn'tpitch, he doesn't he doesn't get injured,
he doesn't He's not the one onthe I l and have to deal
with all that. I just thinkthat, and I said this before that,
(14:35):
don't put all the eggs in onebasket this year. Give him,
give him, give him a coupleof years to make this whole thing work.
You've got old Tony, You've gotYosha Noble, you got Mookie,
you got Freddy from multiple years.Let Dave get a couple of three of
those years under his belt and seewhat happens. But not just after one
year, with all of the pressure, all of the things that can go
on. It still has to bechemistry with the team. Just because you're
(14:58):
bringing new guys that are stars doesn'tmean it's gonna work automatically right away.
All right, You just wanted tomeet the Pittsburgh Pirates, that's all,
that's all. Fred Rogan, RodneyPete a sports Hey, big news.
We should have mentioned this right offthe top. Oh no, this is
(15:20):
our bad I mean, probably oneof the biggest occurrences of this year in
sports will happen tonight, and wedid not mention it. So apologies to
all, Oh lord, my apologies. It's the one thing that's going to
turn everything around, the magic bullet. What's that one thing that if we
(15:41):
had this one thing, it's allgonna go our way, That one thing
that we did not mention, Rodney, And you know what, it's on
you as much as it's on me, So you got to take some of
the blame here too, Okay, okay, wearing this thing together, Fred,
I'm in it. What's the onething? Oh lord, the man
(16:03):
is back. The man is back. You know what the man is No
Anthony Rendon. Anthony Rendon is back. You had me all going crazy like
ooh he talking about this is allimpromptu Anthony Rendon. What he's talking about?
(16:25):
The man is back. Anthony Rendonis back. Oh he's back tonight,
He's back. They play Texas.I'll tell you what matter if he's
back, Fred, you know thatit's never been a matter. If he's
back, is it? How longis he back? For? Right?
Well, and that's the question,So look at it like this for now,
he's back. If you're an Angelfan, save up your money for
(16:48):
playoff tickets, because he's back andthis is going to turn their whole season
around. And for him, Imean, this is the start of something
big. This is it. Surethere have been some bumps. Sure,
there have been some bumps. Buthe's back and tonight will change the course
(17:10):
of history. That's it. That'sit, that's it. He's healthy.
He's back in the lineup tonight.Oh, he's back in the lneup in
the light up tonight. Not onlyin the lineup, he's leading off there,
but the first batter of the game, Anthony Rendeau leading off, ladies
(17:34):
and gentlemen, leading off for theAngels. He was he number. I
don't even know his number anymore. He used to be six or something like
that, leading off for the Angels. Anthony Rendeaut. The crowd goes,
ooh, he's still playing. Ohhe's back, Lord back tonight. All
(17:56):
right, now, let's do this, and we don't wish bad on anybody,
We really don't. Does he makeit till the end of the year?
Is that a question? Statement? No? Does he make it to
the end of the year. Ifyou had to go to Vegas, right
and they said, somebody said,Freddie, here's what I'm a gift to
(18:17):
you. I'm a gift you onehundred thousand dollars. Okay, here's the
only stipulation. You can't spread itaround. You can't go play craps or
roulette or blackjack. You can't even, you know, bet on any other
sporting events uifah. You can't beton the COPA Cups that are happening right
(18:41):
now, can't bet on Summer League, can't bet on cricket, can't bet
on soccer, can't bet on soccer, can't bet on horse racing, can't
bet on anything. The only betsyou have it has to be Freddie right
and all or nothing. Bet withyour one hundred thousand dollars right, So
(19:03):
there's no anything. You can't headyou bet. You can't hedge it.
You can't say I only put twothousand dollars down. You got a hundred
grand I'm giving you, But yougotta be all in. Does Anthony Rendon
finish the season? Where are youputting that hundred grand? Freddy? I'm
gonna say he makes it? WhatKevin? Kevin? I know we record
(19:33):
every show, and I know we'vegot it all in the can and we'll
have this for the podcast for thosewho wants to listen and go back and
listen to the show, because youput it up at the moment we're off.
You have him on record saying hemakes it. I think he makes
it. Wow, nobody will takethat. Where does this stroke of faith
and Anthony Rondault come from? Fred, Because history is not on your side
(19:57):
on this. I just want tohere's I started thinking about it. And
we don't have just five games left, Fred, we haven't even made it
to the All Star break yet.But here's here's my thinking. That's why
I pause for a second. TheAll Star break is right around the corner,
right, Okay, so he'll beoff then. Then he's got a
(20:18):
little less than half the season tomake it, and I think he will.
I think he will make it.Under what rationale, under what research,
under what history, under what stipulation, precedent, anything would lead you
believe that this man would make ithealthy through the rest of the season.
(20:42):
Okay, Well, he's had timeoff, so he's got to be in
good shape. That's an understatement. He's been off for a while, so
got to be in good shape. And really he didn't even really do much
this year before he got hurt again, So you gotta figure that he's already
(21:03):
used that up for this season. He's already used up in the odds,
is what you're saying, right,I'm just saying he'll make it. So
all right, basically, he willmake it through a season. Counting tonight,
there are seventy one games left inthe Angel season. So how many
games would he have to play tohit that qualification of quote unquote staying healthy
the rest of the season. He'snot gonna play all seventy one. Nobody
(21:26):
does that. Seventy one. Igive him ten. No, No,
I'm saying I'll give him. I'llgive him ten games off, ten off.
So I would say he has toplay sixty one games in order to
qualify. So, Fred, areyou confident that Anthony Rendon is going to
play sixty one of the seventy onegames remaining on the Angel schedule? That's
(21:48):
the question, Okay, But Ihave to look at it a little differently,
or maybe it's the same you tellme. I'm saying, from this
moment on through the rest of theseason, he will not miss one game
due to injury. Oh, that'swhat I'm saying. I even gave you
a break, and he didn't eventake that break. No, I said,
he's gonna make it so that meanshe cannot be injured for the rest
(22:11):
of the season. I mean, now, Fred injured could be like his
knee was a little sore today,so we're gonna sit him down, but
we're not putting him on the injuredlist. He'll be back tomorrow. Okay,
that is technically missing a game dueto injury. All right, let's
do this. He cannot appear onthe injured list. Okay, whoa wow?
Even going that far? Right,Well, because Kevin makes a valid
point, Hey, my knee sore, right, take tonight. I'm giving
(22:33):
you those giving you those ten games, Ron's just giving you the gamest I
was giving you the games just incase that happens. I was giving you
ten games to say, maybe he'ssore back issue, he didn't sleep well
the night before, he's gonna misstonight's game. And you get ten of
those. But you're not even takingthat. You're saying he won't even appear
on the injured list of the seventyone games they got left. Correct,
(22:57):
That's that's the bet. I willI will play because remind me, Kevin,
never ever ever in life, inthe history of my life, my
kid's life, my grandkid's life, whoever comes, you know, behind me,
never ever go to Vegas, AtlanticCity, any kind of reservation,
Marongo, Yama Va, anywhere withFred Rogan noted. All right, well,
(23:22):
listen, I'm very comfortable in mybet for one hundred grand he will
not appear on the injured list forthe rest of the season. What makes
you so confident for that, loveaverages? If I'm love averages, it's
a wild card. He's got tobe healthy eventually, is that what it
is. That's why I'm looking atit. Yeah, he's got it.
It can't happen again. So nowwe'll see. This is good. We
(23:42):
have a bet. But you doubleddown. You didn't even take the ten
games. I was given you nobecause that would be unfair. I said,
he's not gonna yet hurt, sohe cannot go on the injured list.
If he does not appear on theinjured list between now and the end
of the season, I win thebet. If he goes on for one
day, I've lost, or doesn'tplay. No, he just can't go
(24:06):
on the injured list when healthy doesn'tplay. He can't be a healthy scratch.
Yes, or you say he canbe a healthy scratch. He just
asked to avoid a stint on theinjured list. Is what your says it?
That's it, that's the bet,all right, all right, all
right, save it. I'm verycomfortable in this, very comfortable. We're
going to have a tracker up andwe don't put up in the studio attract
(24:29):
the rendon't tracker day fifteen and he'sstill in the lineup. We gotta do
that, Kevin. That'll be great, o. God, it starts tonight.
Jesus, you're not gonna last aweek. All right, all right,
let's bring on now a Victor breakwith the Daily Haikup and victod afternoon.
(24:51):
He's on Rendon watch. But hashe ever run with the bulls in
Pamplona, Spain? Fred Rogan,Hello, Vic, I've not. I
know you're talking about the Tour deFrance, but we can't forget the running
of the bulls every year. Cannotwhat are the summer rituals the bulls run
(25:15):
away from him? Robnie peach youdamn right, and I would never ever
ever run with them damn bulls?Have you ever seen a black man run
from the bulls? And I don'tthink I am rare very rare very rare.
We don't mess with the wild animals. One reason well, he and
(25:41):
Lauren are raising a young bull inlittle all of them O N think.
I come on now, so letme get this straight. There's an animal
who's in its very nature is tochase down its prey at a very high
level of speed, and you wantme to run from that? Sounds like
