Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Talk of the Town on news Radio with thirteen
hundred and one oh six nine FM. Steve Kelly and
Brett Pakita from West Michigan's Morning News join once again
by our friend Mark Lazarrok, who's the fund development manager
at Hospice of Holland. Mark, thanks for coming in again today.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Thanks so much for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
The Vanderley Cup Hospice Regatta, which was launched in two
thousand and six, coming up quick August sixteenth on Saturday.
Tell us a little bit about this amazing event which
was launched in honor of Paul Vanderleeke tell us a
little bit about Paul before we start.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Paul was the former commodore of Mechtau Bay Yacht Club
and was an active sailor in Holland and when time
came for him to need services of Hospice of Holland
a few years later, his family got together and decided
to start this annual memorial sailboat race, which has now
grown into our largest fundraiser of the year.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
How cool is that to keep a legacy going, And
obviously Paul meant a lot to that community, to the
sailing community in Holland, and then to tie in, and
I felt the same way with the care that my
dad my mother in law received. I've talked about that
for hospice here locally in the Grand Rapids area. You
guys are wonderful people and it's great to see this event.
It was just spurned by this become your biggest fundraiser.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, it's a very touching day. We have an annual
memorial sale that we have. Everyone signs every year and
memory of their loved ones and all the previous years
are on display hanging in the event. So everyone's a
part of this event and we continue to honor them
and celebrate their lives every year.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
So proceeds from the event help provide compassionate end of
life care, palliative care through Keystone Medical Services. Bereavement counseling
is so important too, and disease specific care through your
Take Heart, congestive heart failure and still ME advanced dementia programs.
We'll touch on those in just a little bit, but
find out more at vanderleak cup dot com. That's vander

(01:56):
leek Cup dot com. Let's start with the day event,
the sailing race, So what kind of goes on during
that event?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
So the sailing race starts at ten am is the
first warning, and the sailors head out and they spend
the day doing three different courses and head back from
ice cream social at Mechanto Bay Yacht Club. At twelve
o'clock over a basin marina, the Dingy Poker Run kicks
off and that runs until two and people will cruise

(02:25):
around the lake and their dinghy's wearing crazy costumes. This
year's theme is Saturday Morning Cartoons. Oh, so they'll make
their stops and then they'll come back in by two
o'clock and turn in their cards for the best poker hand.
And then five o'clock we start the dinner, the raffles,
silent and live auctions, and then at eight o'clock we
have the nineteen eighty five for dancing and celebration.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Now you do have to have your own dinghy. I
already asked that question for people out there thinking but
for the dingy Poker Run, and there's nothing really like this.
I love this concept that I've ever heard of, And
so is there any cap on this? And I say
that because of Lake Macatawa is a big place, but
you also have to be considerate of the other boat
traffic that day, right.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, we tend to stay in the bay close to
the marina and we have a cap of I believe
it's twelve feet for the or fifteen feet for the
dinghy and it has to be an inflatable.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Wow. Again. You can find out more at vander Leek
Cup dot com. Do you need to and through the website,
can you register as a team as a fundraiser.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, So if you go to Vanderley Cup dot com,
you can purchase tickets for the evening portion of the event.
You can register for the poker run, you can register
your sailboat for the race. Everything's housed right there to
make it simple and easy for everyone to navigate.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
And if you're saying, hey, I don't have maybe a
sailboat to race, I don't have a dinghy, but I
still want to support and be a part of it,
We've saved maybe the best for a last right, and
that's the boat Barn Party.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
The evening part of the event is the highly anticipated
part of the whole entire day. We've been nicknamed throughout
Holland as Holland's best summer party, and it's just it's
a great honor to have such a great event that
has such great recognition to be able to raise proceeds
for such a great organization.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
It's a yacht Mason Marina and the festivities begin at
about five o'clock. So that's you mentioned auctions and dinner
and live music, and that's going to be a ball.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, it's a great time. We've got some great items
for the live auction. We've got some boat rides, we've
got some a poxigarage floor, and we've got some private dinners,
just great items from local individuals that wanted to step
up and help support our services.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
And you can do a dinner ticket or you could
just do general admission. General emissions thirty dollars, dinner ticket
fifty on the website. I'm going to have you give
the website out again, but also what's the cutoff on that,
because i know you got to know, right how many
people are going to feed?

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, the cutoff for the dinner tickets is August tenth
or until we sell out, and the general admission is
thirty dollars until Friday, and then the day of it's
thirty five dollars at the door to get in.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
And again, the website is vander Leakcup dot com. That's
l E e K at the end League Cup dot
com Mark. Did we leave anything out?

Speaker 2 (05:03):
I don't think so. I think we've covered it all.
We have room for plenty, So come on out and
help celebrate Hospice of Holland and have a great day.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
That is Saturday, August sixteenth. Again it started in two
thousand and six Vanderleak Cup dot com with Hospice of
Holland Fund Development Manager Mark LAZARUK. Great stuff. As always,
best wishes for a big event.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Thank you, Thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
