standing in the way the Hornets from Harrison and the
Division seven clash is the Lake Short Game of the

We are a huge memorial stadium in Harrison and a
trophy is on the line tonight. Shelby TK won eleven
games in eleven seasons. This year, they won six, including
the playoff game last week at Pine River. How good's
that got to be for the Tigers?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Well, as Tony the Tigers said, it feels great. Yeah, truly.
To understand how Shelby is feeling this year, you got
to understand the depths that they were in, you know,
five winless seasons and you know, talking to a coach,
Phil Fotier earlier this week on Tuesday, I thought he
had a great quote. He said, show me a place

of struggle, and I'll show you a place of strength.
And Shelby really feels like they're strong from what they've
been through, not only through the years, but this season
as well. You look at the tough loss as they've
had Jason, they could easily be nine and one at
this point. They lost three tough games, including two right
at the end of the year, But talking to them
on Tuesday, they feel like that's ancient history. They feel

fired up and ready to go.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, you talk about those Week eight and Week nine
matchups against Mace Cunty Central Nurture Review, both on the road,
both games they led in the final minutes but couldn't
hang on to They bounced back on the twenty to
two win over Pine River in the first round last
week on the roads. The opponent tonight Harrison another feel
good story. Last week, the Hornets won their first home
playoff game since nineteen ninety nine. Tonight they go for

their first ever district title. What do we know about
the school from the Jackpine Conference, Well, we know they're.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Big and physical and they're a wing tea team and
they are going to come out and pound it right
at Shelby, and Shelby's gonna have to be ready. If
they're not ready, it's going to be a long night
for them. But you know, I mentioned the quote from
Phil four Tier, and you know it was a great
quote that I saw from Harrison. Coach Jamie Lufsky. He said,

offense requires eight people to block, two people to run fakes,
and one to hide the ball. So I mean that's
what they do. And it's gonna be a unique challenge
because Shelby hasn't really faced a true wing tee team
all year. Probably the closest thing they've had to it
is a man of Stee and Heart, which runs elements

of that. So that's gonna be a challenge defensively for Shelby.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well, of course Heart runs the single wing, but you
look at they face a lot of power eye right
when you talk about Ravenna and Mason County Central, they
struggle to stop the downhill running game of the Bulldogs
and the Spartans, and I think that's what they're going
to have to try to find a way to do
today tonight against a really good Harrison running game. This

meeting in high school football for just the second time.
Tom Kender remembers the first meeting in nineteen fifty six

what we have tonight. Jason and Tom Kendra at Hughes
Memorial Stadium getting ready for the Division seven Region one,
District two championship game. Tom Kendra, what do you remember
from that fifty six game.

Oh, it was a great game. I really enjoyed, really
enjoyed it. Beautiful night, just like tonight. Now. You know,
I'm impressed. We didn't know what we were gonna find
when we came up here to Harrison. Well, first of all,
I don't know you probably heard the same thing I
had some of my friends saying, you know, why are
you going to Harrison? I said, I love it. I
love this. This is awesome. And here we are. The

field is in great shape and the we don't expect
any precipitation, which is great for Shelby with their wide
open game, and you know, the temperature is decent, So
I just think we got a great night for football
up here, and it's a great night for Shelby.

Really. It's a natural grass surface which appears to be
in great condition. It's a beautiful night forty five degrees
here as we are just north of Claire, just south
of Holton Lake, right in the middle of the Lower Peninsula.
And let's take a look at some of the other
games going on for Lake Shore teams tonight. Them skiking
Big Reds at the comfy, the con friendly confines of
Hackley Stadium tonight to take on Trevor's City Central Time Coundery.

We just saw beat Mona Shores last week in a
great playoff game thirty nine, thirty four. You always have
to guard against that letdown playing against travers Cy Central tonight.
What do you expect out of the Big Reds.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
I think it's going to be just the opposite of
that Jay. It's just such an emotionally draining game the
whole week when they play Mona Shores. I think the
Big Reds have that behind them, and they're going to
be really comfortable. I think they're going to roll tonight.
You know. That's also the return of Eric Sugars, the
Orchard View grad now coaching Trevorse City Central, so we'll
see what he can do coming back home to Muskegan.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
That's in Division two. The winner or that one's either
going to play Portage Central or Byron Center. By the way,
that's our game of the week. Over on nine to
six won the game. Brett Bikeita and Ryan Oschnock are
live at mccamley knight Field. That should be a dandy
as well. How about Division three Zealand West seven and
three at Saint Joseph Dickinson Stadium tonight. You look at

it the Duckster Division three state champs, but they are
the four seed in this district. They knocked off undefeated
Niles last week on the road, thirty to twenty one,
and sure John Schulte's retired Jeff Bullhouse has stepped in.
The Ducks are playing a lot of juniors. We look
at Andrew Prattley, the head coach at Saint Joe. He
beat John Shilte and Zeeland West at Zealand Stadium in

the playoffs, so he knows all about this matchup. I
think it's gonna be another good one.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, Jay, you mentioned Jeff Bollhouse. What a great job
he's done. You know, they lost a ton of seniors
off that state championship team, Like you mentioned, a lot
of juniors on that team, and they weren't very good early.
But the Ducks are getting better and better and nobody
wants to play them right now. In Division three.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, so the winter that one's going to play either
Lowell or for Apple Kellogg. They're doing battle tonight at
Red Arrow Stadium in Lowell. In Division four, spring Lake
goes to Unity Christian. The Lakers scored forty two last
week and a win over Godwin Heights. Unity Christian scored
fifty three and win over Howland Christian shootout. What do
you think?

Speaker 3 (06:25):
I think? So for sure. I'll tell you one thing.
A lot of teams are intimidated when they play Unity Christian.
Spring Lake is not one of them. They've beaten them
the last two times they played. They played four straight
years in the Okay Blue not long ago. The Lakers
won the last two, so they should give them a
little bit of confidence going into this game. Yeah, should
be a shootout.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Of course, the winner that game will move out of
the regional to play either Big Rapids or Escanaba. That
game will take place tomorrow up north of the Bridge.
I caught a little bit of Escanaba's went over Freeland
last week on the NFHS network. It was sunny and
beautiful Ninsula. I'm sure the Cardinals are hoping for more
of the same tomorrow. They're probably already up there in

Division five from right here in the West Michigan Conference,
Whitehall on the road at saganaw Swan Valley. How about
the Vikings. They just seem to turn it on this
time of year. Last year we saw him in a
district title at Forest Hills Eastern. We saw him in
the regional losing to South Christian. They're at saganaw Swan
Valley looking to win another district title tonight. But you
look at the saganaw Swan Valley They're only lost this

years to Frankenmuth. They're playing some good football. I expect
another close game here tonight.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
I think you're right. It's again Whitehall being the underdogs.
You remember last year they were the underdogs against Forest
Hills Eastern in the district final, and they find a
way to get the win. You know, Whitehall, they really
haven't put it all together much here in the second
half of the year. They're gonna need to in this game.
But if they are able to do that formula ball control,
play tough defense, they're gonna have a chance.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
So the winner that one will play either Ogama Heights
or Kingsford Ogama Heights out of the Jackpine Conference, which
is what Harrison is in. That game will take place
tomorrow in Division six Montague at Reed City. How about
to get They are rolling TK. They were one in
four now they've won five in a row. But I'll
tell you what, the Coyotes present a big time challenge.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yeah, Reid City is big and strong, but I don't know.
I just think Montague's line is underrated. They got some
they got some dogs up there, Eli Eiler's, Maverick Osbourne,
Isaac French, Logan Hansen. They're tough and they're gonna have
to play good to shut down that power tee of
Reed City.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
And then where that one's either gonna get Kingsley or
Traverse City Saint Francis. Saint Francis won that regular season
matchup twenty one to twenty way back early in this season.
Also in Division six, Kent City ten and zero at
Belding nine and one, Andre Beating Company didn't get a
home playoff game. They're still not playing at home despite
being undefeated. But they went to Olive that last week
got a really good win. We got a chance to
do it again tonight. It gets another really good opponent.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Another classic matchup, kind of the offensive Belding against the
defense of Kent City. The Eagles defense has been really good.
I like their linebacker duo Logan Thompson and Cooper Stinson
really good, and then they got the Danielson brothers up front.
I think this needs to be a low scoring game
if Kent City wants to pull the upset, and.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
The winner of Kent City Belding will get the Montrose.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Who's Montros playing?

Speaker 2 (09:09):
I think it ran Montrose Duran the Railroaders in the
regional final. And in Division seven tomorrow it's North Muskegan
at Poamo West Valley. Of course, the Pirates many people's
favorite to win a state title. We've seen this matchup
a few times, both in the regular season and the playoffs.
You and I called the game at Fred Jackson Memorial
Field in Week one when PW came to town and
one thirty five to six. I think it'll be closer

this time around.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
It'll be closer because Bryce Colbert is on fire right now.
Jason the senior quarterback for North Muskegan, kind of had
a slow start this season, but he's really been playing
well and that gives North Muskegan an upset chance in
that game. You know, the defense for North Muskegan came
alive last week. They have given up at least eighteen
points in every game this year until last week they

(09:52):
held Saraenac to eight points. So if the defense shows
up again with Bryce Colbert, we could have himselves a ballgame.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
District Final Friday, It's always my favorite night in the
playoffs because you get a lot of local teams playing
each other and really good opponents. We've got a week
it's going to be a really good game. Shelby and
Harrison here in Division seven, we are in Hornet Country,
Hughes Memorial Stadium, counting down to kickoff between the Tigers
and the Hornets here on one oh seven mus the Moose,

We are back in the Coach's corner with fifty year
Shelby coach Phil four Tier. And Phil, you know, I
know you've been here for a long time before as
an assistant coach. You were here for those great back
to back semi final teams in twenty twelve twenty thirteen,
and then this program went through a rough patch some
over seasons. How are you guys able to turn things

(10:55):
around this year?

Speaker 4 (10:57):
It's been a five.

Speaker 5 (10:58):
Year process, it really has, and we had to start over.
We had to start from scratch, and it really came
down to getting kids out to play football because we
believe in the game of football and what it what
it does for the people that play it. And you know,
all my coaches and myself, you know, you know, we
are who we are today because of the game of football,
and that's why we've dedicated our lives to coaching it.

(11:20):
But it really comes down to this is that we
wanted kids out, so we recruited kids. And then and
then we tried to make sure what we reward behaviors
that that we know are going to help them be successful.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
And then and then either ignore or or challenge some
of the behaviors that you know aren't.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
And so we've done everything we've can to promote the
game of football and get guys doing what they need
to do.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
And this group has really embraced what we do.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, this year's team has showed a lot of resilience.
You were five and two and then you suffered really
back to back heartbreaking losses to Mason County Central and
Orchard View, and then a lot of people thought you
were done. But I guess what did these kids show
you last week and that big playoff win up at
Pine River.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
Show me a place of struggle, and I'll show you
a place of strength and UH and we struggle out
with a lot of things here at Shelby, you know,
between academics and UH continuity and the and the and
the teaching staff and and funding and and all kinds
of stuff. And so our kids are used to bouncing back.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
They just are. And they have. You know, this team
is is really tight, the tightest team we've had.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
They they love each other, they hang out, everybody's in
kind of thing, and so there was resilience is they
don't want to let each other down. And so we've
always framed things.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
They see so much good. I see so much good.

Speaker 5 (12:50):
And even those losses, and so we knew we could
fix things and we could get after it and we
could come back and we and win. And our kids
believe in themselves and we believe in our kids, and
and they're just very determined group.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
But just now, you guys have really done better. I
think on the offensive and defensive lines. I mean, the
skilled kids get a lot of attention. But who are
some of your leaders there up up front that have
been powering you guys?

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Right, So.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
Really starts with with with with Ethan v.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Turna. It was our all conference guy.

Speaker 5 (13:30):
You know, Uh, Casey Lamblin has done a fantastic job.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
He's so athletic from that left tackle position.

Speaker 5 (13:39):
Uh. Colin Fenton at the other tackle is just a powerhouse.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
Uh. That guy.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
That guy can lift some weight and he can move
some people. I'll tell you that.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
And then Axel Morrits at at left at left guard.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Just a tough, gritty, determined player.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
And then we've got Alonso Garcia has taken over the
center job this season and has been awesome snapping the ball.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
But these guys push each other in the weight room.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
It's the first time we've had an old line that
can bench press over all of them can bench press
over two hundred and twenty five pounds, and they're both
near three hundred or all of them are near three
hundred in their squat, and so.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
It starts there. It's got to start there on that
offense and defensive line.

Speaker 5 (14:30):
And so that group's been together for a long time
and they've put in a lot of work and we're
seeing some success because of that.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
And then at the quarterback position, you guys are unique
there because you've used two of them, senior Isaac Garcia
and the junior Jalen Henderson. So but now you know,
Isaac's been injured with a broken hand, and so Jalen
has had to step up and be the guy. But
I guess talk to me a little about those two guys,
what each of them bring this to your team?

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Okay, So, so Isaac is our dude. He is. He's
our leader. He's the glue that keeps us together. And
you know, when losing him it was really tough.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (15:14):
He's he's an accurate passer, he's lightning with the football.
He's hard to catch, he's hard to put to touch
for that matter, he's so shifty and Jaylen throws one
of the best deep balls I've ever.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
Of a quarterback I've had for sure.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
And and then it is just a bowl running the football.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
And so they bring those different.

Speaker 5 (15:41):
They bring those different talents to to the position, and
we felt like we could use them both on offense
this year, and so after after Isaac's injury, it made
a very smooth transition to just slide j in there
full time.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
All right. And then lastly, coach, you know, you guys
haven't had to travel much here Shelby, but here you
are in the playoffs. You had a trip to Leroy
this week, you're going to Harrison. Who knows, maybe next
week you'll be going up to the up. But I
would I would assume, after everything this football program has
been through, a little travel isn't going to phase your
kids much?

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Is it? Absolutely not? They they you know, they had
a great time going to Leroy. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (16:25):
I think I think there is part of it that
that where the distractions are taken away because we're all
traveling together where we got you know, we don't have
the other people around us that are pulling ass family
or friends or whoever.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
And uh, I think they enjoyed that.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
I think they just had a calm about them and
just a readiness for that game last week, and I
think that's going to continue this week.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
All right, Well, good luck Friday night.

Thank you doing an awesome job at Shelby. When you
think about the first four seasons here, he guided the
Tigers through some difficult times, a lot of losses. But
look they've come out the other side now not only
a winning season, but a playoff berth a win.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
At this point, it's all gravy, right, Yeah. And I
was at their practice Tuesday. They're having fun, you know,
and that's sometimes we lose sight of that. They were
just they were having a good time, joking with each
other and uh yea. So it's a great story. And
if they were able to get a win tonight, that
would be one of the best stories of the year.

Well, it won't be easy. Harrison is really good. Of course,
it never is this time of year. We're super excited
about this one though. The Shelby Tigers out of the
westn Michigan Conference Rivers Division and the Harrison Hornets out
of the jack Pine Part two Conference. We're about five
minutes or so from kickoff. This is the bone Heating

Memorial Stadium here in Harrison as Shelby goes for its
first district title since twenty thirteen. Time, Kender, how about
some keys to victory. Let's start with the Shelby Tigers.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Yeah. I think for Shelby it's clearly the key is
their defense. When you play a team with a different
style than you've seen all year, the defense is huge.
And Phil Ford here told me that I was there
on Tuesday. He said, tomorrow is our key practice of
the week and I said why is that? He said,
that's our defense day. He said, we got to get ready.
I think the defensive lineman Colin Fenton, Axel Moritz Ethan

v Turner, they need to hold their own, make those
lead blockers take them on so that the linebackers Brody
Fessenden and Max Haggs from can clean up the ball carriers.
But that's critical for Shelby to have a chance.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Yeah, and you got to try to make them uncomfortable, right,
because if you keep letting them get five six yards
on first down, they're just going to stay in their
comfort zone. It could be really tough to stop all that.
How about Harrison, what's the key to victory for the Hornets?

Speaker 3 (18:57):
You know they play in a run heavy league. Can
they defend the pass They're going to have to tonight?
There the packed in wing t offense shall be is
spread wide in that veer and uh, you know they
were dealing with a We have a star in the making,
I think in Jalen Henderson. This is a big game
for him tonight. But he's throwing six interceptions that's the

one thing I noticed with him. He's got to take
care of the ball, and that's a key for Harrison.
If Verry will get an interception or two that plays
into their hands.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Well, I'm going to tell you right now, two point conversions.
Both teams are going to go for two.

I think the two point conversion will be huge. Harrison
has been really good on two point conversions this year.
Shelby has had moments, but they haven't probably been as
