The drive to Ford Field takes on a new meaning
tonight in Division four. When this night is over, Big
Rapids will have traveled more than eight hundred miles to
play three playoff games, and while Union Christian has traveled
far less. The Sators are on a bus for the
twelfth straight week because they don't have a fall home field.
Big Rapids in Unie Christian A, Hudsonville's Eagles Stadium is
the LMCU lake Short Game of the Week on one
of seven m us the Moves. I'm Jason Hutton alongside

Lakewood head coach Tim Swore. Tom Kendra has the night off.
Coach Swore, great to have you here and we have
a really nice matchup. It's hard to overstate the season
Big Rapids is having just one stumble that came to
Coopersville in week eight. A conference championship in dominant fashion
in the Central State's Activities Association Red Division, and a
pair of.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Really good playoff wins.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
And don't forget that Coopersville teams the same one that
not Keniwa Hill's out in round one, so certainly a
quality loss. You look at round one when they had
to travel up till Luddington got behind, battled back in
the fourth quarter, showed character, guts. They end up winning
thirty two to thirty one on the road in Luddington.
Then they got to travel all the way to Escanaba

and play again and they win that forty eight eighteen.
So I think Big Rapids the trip down here was
well worth it. They're excited to be here and from
everything I hear, they're a very physical defensive football team.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
But one of the themes of this postseason has been
difficult draws and everybody wants to see the regional potentially
see the whole state. I mean, Big Rapids had way
too good of a season to play three straight road
games and only that tough opponents. And that continues tonight.
UNI Christian in a familiar position for this program, but
it's the Satyars' actual first appearance in a regional championship
game since twenty twenty one. How do you expect unity

to respond to night on big stage?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
You know what playoff time culture takes over. I remember
when they started their program two thousand and three. I
was a head coach at North Point Christian starting in
two thousand and eight, the guy I went to for
advice coach Tibby because he knew what it was like
to start up program at a Christian school from scratch.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
What he did.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
We spent a lot of time doing seven on seven's
over in the field where the school is now and.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
What he has built, what they have done.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
So remember these kids that are playing tonight, they've been
to the games, watching the older kids when they were
in middle school. Right, culture is built, They're ready. They
are not going to have a problem with any pressure.
And remember their only regular season loss to Notre Dame
Prep out a Pontiac. I'm telling you people around here
forget about them because they think we crowned the Division

five state champ last week with the game between Catholic
Central and West Catholic.

Don't forget Notre Dame Prep.

That was a quality loss and that was on this
field here Hutsville. Remember you, UNI Christian does not have
a home field, so they've used several different home fields,
including Jennison which they played the first round playoff matchup
and there went over Holland Christian and also Grandville High School.
They played quite a bit of game at Granvillehigh School today.
It was here at Hudsonville's Eagles Stadium in a week
nine when Notre Dame Prep clipped Unity Christian thirty four

this time of year, a lot of games start shifting
too Saturday. But I think there's one big reason that
a majority of the games around the state or tonight,
and that's because tomorrow's November fifteenth.

Yeah, it's something about hunting.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, we used to call that Saint Antler's Day up
dur in Carson City when it was there.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
So yes, that's a big reason.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
And uh, you know football tonight, it's a few games tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Let's talk about a couple of games that have some
interest both tonight and tomorrow. Let's go to Division three
East Grand Rapids at Mount Pleasant. You know the Oilers
are eleven to zero, incredibly impressive season. Eastcrapit's got a
couple losses. I think East is really good. What do
you make of this matchup at Mount Pleasant? It harkens
me back to the days of Peter Stursma.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Oftentimes East Grand Rapids would go to Mount Pleasant and
East Grand Rapids you get the better of them by
a couple of scores. That was back when they had
the Glenn Dinnings and those kids playing. Any East Grand Rapids,
you know they've done a great job of building year
to year, and don't count them out. I know Mount
Pleasant is undefeated, but I would not be surprised if

the Pioneers win that.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
They're really good on defense, all right.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Also in Division three, so the winner that one's going
to get either Zealand West or Lowell the state semifinal
this game. You can hear live on nine to six
one the game. Rick Burkey and Buck Gino have the
call this when Brepikeita is out of state tonight. But
great Phill and how about have Rick Burkey to step in.

Yeah, So Zeeland West Loull eight and three ducks.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
You know, defending state lost a couple of games this year,
but here they are this time of year, still standing
against Lowell. How about the Red Arrows and Jacob Henegy,
what they've done? What do you think of this game?

Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
You know, I happen to live right across the street
from low High School, so you know you get a
peek at what they're doing. And coach Nickie's done a
really good job there. You know, there's a lot of
pressure when you take over. Noel Dean has been your
coach and you've got to build that thing from scratch
and get it going again offensively. You know, they got
a quarterback who's just sneaky and powerful. And then Zealand

West coach Chilito retires. But what did I tell you
about culture and experience? It is so big this time
of year. If I had to give one team the.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Edge, I think it goes to Zealand West.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
That'll be interesting. It's still going to be a fun
game there on nine to six one in the game.
All right down in Division five? How about this? This
is my story on this one and let me I
want to get your opinion on this. So West Catholic
is at home against Calma's United. Obviously West cath would
be a favorite in this matchup, but they played their
super Bowl last week, right, they have to get back
and get excited to play a really good Chem's United team.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
How difficult is that?

Speaker 3 (06:01):
It's difficult And I'm sure they talked about that on
Sunday when they met and started going over film on
Kalamazoo United, and I said, look, guys, we had.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
To win this game to get to the next game.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Obviously, their win over Catholic Central, I mean it took
everything they had. They got some revenge because of the
last two years what happened in that matchup, and.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Now here they are.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Would I be shocked if they got out to a
slow start. No, But are they the better football team
and the due have a dynamic quarterback who can control
the game and make things happen. Yes, so certainly give
the advantage to West Catholic, but I'm sure they had
to address what you just said. All week long.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
We're getting ready for Big Rapids and Unity Christian and
the Division four regional title game here in Hudsonville. Big
Rapids won the CSAA Red Division this year second place,
and that was Reed City. The Coyote still standing as well.
They're at Kingsley tonight. The Stags beat reed City way
back in week one. We'll see what happens in the rematch.
I want to go to tomorrow real quick, coach ya.
East Katwin and Hudsonville right here on this field. We

saw the matchup in week seven on this field. East
Kentwin throws what can only be described as a hail
mary and the final play to or excuse me, Hudsonville
building through what can only be describe as a hailmary
in the final play to win by a single point.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
I just it can't be that good again, can it?

Speaker 4 (07:16):
I think it can.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
You know, it may not get on ESPN's Top ten
for a third time, but no, I mean you talk
about two teams with you know the Hey, that quarterback
at East Kentwood is special, all right, Let's not forget that.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
And obviously Hudsonville has not.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Been beaten and they've I mean they've not been beaten
in what may be the toughest league in the state,
right and that that tells me that they're more than ready.
They're playing at home. It will be a challenge for
East Kentwood. But if there's a team out there that
can have some explosive plays and stay in the game,
it is East Kentwin.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Kay Kauflin's playing at an incredibly high level. Say you,
Brady Van Lake has had a really good year, you know,
Coffin Gordon, Michigan State. Then Lake going to Farists can
be high level football tomorrow right here at Eagles Stadium.
How about Division seven Shelby's at Menominee. I don't know
how familiar you are with this story, but Tom Kender
and I called the Shelby District title game at Harrison
last week. They had an eleven year stretch before this

year where they won eleven total games. They had a
seven year run where they won two.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Well, they won a district championship.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Right and I remember when they had gone to a
regional final. We're going back to like twenty fourteen to fifteen,
and then two years later they were forfeiting games because
the numbers dropped again. They stuck with it, and this
is a message to a lot of small schools. Stick
with it, keep building your program all the way up,
and you can be where Shelby is now with a
chance to get a regional final.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Obviously it's a challenge.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
No Nominee is always solid physical football team, but hats
off to Shelby.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
And Shelby's been an underdog. Nobody expected them to be here,
so why not?

Speaker 4 (08:48):
Right?

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Why not the Tigers? Right?

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Montros at Kent City tomorrow eleven and zero and eleven
and oer and Kent City's in a similar spot to
Big Rapids. But the Eagles finally got a home game,
right and when undefeated and went on the road in
their first two district be really good. All of that team.
Be a really good building team. Now they take on
undefeated Montrose.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
What do you see in this match up?

Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah? I think everybody is on too Kent City now, right,
Like they're like, wait, can they be that good? Well? Yeah,
just look at their quarterback. I mean that kid is
an athlete. Feel Like we keep talking about the quarterbacks.
But it is a key, especially playoff time. Probably Kent
City's best team in twenty five years and they've done
a great job. And you know Montrose. Again, we talk

(09:28):
about the teams that are always in the playoffs, the
teams that are consistent, the teams you know there they are.
And again, culture is big. This is the furthest Kent
City has been and I don't know how long, but
we'll see what happens there and in Division four.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
So the winner of our game here tonight between Big Rependen,
you ed Chritian goes to the semifinal to play either
Vicksburg or Portland. Now, the Raiders are undefeated, They're a
team that continually makes runs to the semi finals or farther.
I think everyone expects them to beat Vicksburg tomorrow. But
I'll tell you what. Vicksburg's got a really good quarterback.
They got a pretty good team. Tom Marques does a
great job. But Portland, Portland's a favorite. Well I'm partial here.

(10:06):
I had to coach against Portland the last two years, right,
and what they do they just don't make mistakes. They
are so physical, their kids are so smart.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
They drop back into pass coverage exactly where they're supposed
to be. They get into their run fits the way
they're supposed to be. On defense, they don't turn the
ball over, and they're just consistent. Now, they showed me
something against South Christian when they got behind and they
had to come back down the stretch and they did it.
So that was one more thing that I was waiting
to see because they hadn't had a lot of competitive

(10:38):
games and South Christian pushed them. I'm not betting against Portland,
that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Well, we're just about thirteen minutes or so away from
kickoff here to at Eagle Stadium in Division four Unity
Christian hosting Big Rapids winner on to the state's semi finals.

Speaker 1 (10:53):

Thanks for joining us.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Congratulations on what's been a great season so far. If
you could just kind of put it into words, you know,
in a sentence or two, what has this season been
like for you guys.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
You know, it's been a great time.

Speaker 6 (11:27):
I think it's one of the best things we build
is family up here, and I think the guys have
really bought into that. You know, the last four years,
we've had some pretty good success and we've had some
kids that really helped turn the corner. And this group
of seniors were a part of it. You know, the
last time we won a district championship, the seniors were sophomores,

(11:49):
and so they've been building and working really.

Speaker 5 (11:52):
Hard for this success.

Speaker 6 (11:53):
And you know, it's really exciting to go up against
a program like Unity, you know, a blue chip program,
and it's great to see where we are as a program.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
You Know, one of the things that we look at,
we talk about every year when the playoff brackets come out,
is there are teams that get unfortunate draws. I mean,
you had an unbelievable year. You won your league, you
kind of dominated your league. You lost one game to
a D three playoff team. Not only did you not
get a home playoff game, you to play undefeated Lunnington.
You had to go all the way to Askanava, how
have you guys handled this whole situation? Just showed up

(12:25):
and done what you've had to do.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
You know, I think that goes back to the beginning.

Speaker 6 (12:31):
You know, we talked to the guys about what our
goals are, and you know, ten months ago, our goal
was to be where we're at right now, and that
was kind of the process having that process in place
throughout the year. The goal was to make a playoff run.
And so you know, from from week one on, it
was focus on the details and do what we do

(12:54):
and execute at a high level, no matter no matter
who you play, you know, whether it's a division or
a league opponent or you know Paul Paul week one,
who was who has been a solid D four program
and running the tee. So it's really been getting a
system in place that we believe in and executing every

(13:15):
day in practice.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
So last week you go up to Taskanava.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
That's that's not a short trip, right and they're a
good football team. You go up there, how did you
guys do this. I don't know how if you have
much experience in these long trips like that, how did
you handle going about getting ready for it? How proud
were you the way your team came out and played
really well right out of the gate, because that.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Can be tough on a long trip like that.

Speaker 6 (13:35):
Yeah, we you know, we debated whether to play a
Friday game because we played them in twenty fifteen and
we drove up on Friday, played the game, got back
on the bus, and came back, and that was my
first year at Big Rapids, and so it was I
didn't know the players, you know, had only been there
with them that season.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
This year, we know the guys.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
We have experience in hotels from our veer camps and
stuff like that. So the biggest thing I think for
us was really having every minute of our day planned
for that trip. So we knew exactly when we were leaving.
We knew our first stop at Gaylord, how long we
were going to be there. We knew our lunch stop,
we knew our hotel stop, we knew our practice stop

(14:16):
after that, we knew our dinner, and so having that
really regimented and letting the guys know, you know this
is not just a fun trip, and we love the experiences,
but it's it's a business trip. We're here to play football,
and so I was you know, one of the things.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
That people don't see outside.

Speaker 6 (14:34):
Of the program is how proud I am of our
kids and every stop they handled themselves like gentlemen. You know,
we we got nothing but compliments from each of the
restaurants we stopped at. The hotel desk workers gave us
the greatest compliment. She's she said, I didn't even know
you guys were here, and that, you know, that shows

(14:54):
that when you have fifty fifty high school age boys
and and families around that, you know, we didn't disturb.
We went about our business, and so that was that
was great. And then having a regimented Saturday morning before
that practice or before that game really really made a
difference for us, getting up early, having breakfast, having a

(15:16):
walk through, doing a film session, and then going to
the stadium and then performing. You know, I was real
proud of how we came out of the gate and
and executed pretty well.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
We're kind of doing a kickoff big rapids and Unity
Christian of the Division four regional title game. Talking with
head coach, Mike Selzer, the Big Rapids Cardinals coach.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
You look at it, You've got some experience in this spot.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Just two years ago, you're in a regional final, and
you know, you've got some guys I think that we're
on that played in that game last year.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
Obviously you got the Bowman Cousins. Maybe there's some more.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
How helpful do you think it is.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
To have that recent experience in the regional title game
going into tonight?

Speaker 6 (15:52):
I think I think experience means a lot. Right, you've
been in those situations. You don't let the moment get
too big and and you just you focus, you know,
our big thing and a lot of these our seniors
were on that that that team, and they started as
sophomores that played Chris UH South Christian and UH regional

(16:14):
championship two years ago, you know, and they got that experience.
So they've been here. They know what to expect going
into you know, we we play in smaller stadiums in
the North and then so now we're going to be
in Hudsonville. You know, two years ago we were in
Byron Center, So they're used to that. And so the
big thing is not letting the moment get too big.
Just control what we can control.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
So you look at the Unity Christian team, obviously they're
they're a full house power tea team. You play Reed
City every year, and they're they're similar. I guess they
Read City kind of reads the wide receiver, so maybe
a little bit different. But is that like a good
measuring stick for you guys in terms of how to
defend a team like this or how do you guys
go about it?

Speaker 6 (16:53):
I think, you know, we have our keys and our reads,
and we have they have the things that we want
to do. Unity runs. Though they are both full house tea,
Unity runs a different t than Read City or or
Paul Paul. You know, there's a lot more diversity in it,
and so it's you know, one of the things I

(17:14):
would say is the Unity team is probably the most
disciplined team I've I've seen on film. They don't make mistakes,
they don't shoot themselves in the foot, and they have
answers for what defenses are doing watching the film.

Speaker 5 (17:27):
So it'll be really exciting game.

Speaker 6 (17:29):
I think, you know, if we follow our keys, we
can we can be in a game and we can
fly around. But you know, I think it'll be a
great opportunity to see where we are as a program.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
When you to look at this matchup, just what do
you see as the most important factors for your team
to have a chance to win the game on tonight.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
For for our team, we have to execute our game plan.

Speaker 6 (17:51):
You know, we have to establish a run and be
able to throw at the you know, at the times
that we need to, and we have to limit the
quarterback number fourteen. He's a dude, right, He's an explosive runner.
And the number seven defensive ends he's a dude, and
so we'll have to keep him out of our backfield

(18:12):
as much as possible, as much as possible, and we'll
have to you know, the big thing is not get
behind the chains and run drives.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Awesome.

Speaker 1 (18:22):

Me appreciate Big Rapids Head coach Mike Seltzer now in
his eleventh season leading the Cardinals, and they've been on
some recent success for sure. Two years ago they were
in the regional championship game and coach sware I asked
him about that experience.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
I think that matters. They've got several.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Kids that were on that team playing big roles two
years ago. He doesn't have any players who are played
in a region championship.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
Game before, right, So that part is true, and your
first hand experience is great, But there's also program experience.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
And I know people are like, how does that translate?

Speaker 3 (18:57):
It translate because those kids sitting in the student section
and watch their other team succeed, and they've been around
it and they hear the culture constantly. So I think
it's two teams who are ready for a great game tonight.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
When you look at this unique Christian offense, you know
they're a flat T, power T team. I don't know
if I've seen one as quarterback driven as this team.
I mean when they want the ball in the hands,
the number fourteen justin Phoebus because he'll make plays throwing it,
but really running it.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
No, you touched on what's different on film, all right,
So a lot of full house team. When I say
full house team, when you say flat, it's three running
backs and the quarterbacks under center. Oftentimes it's about confusing
the defense and deception. Right, you got somebody going to
a gap on the right side, somebody hitting traps, somebody

(19:43):
could be powered to the left, whatever the case may be.
These guys are a little more about how do we
set up quarterback keep? And so their coaches upstairs are
the key.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
They're an IF and then offense.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
In other words, when they see the defense taking something away,
they know exactly what that means should work and oftentimes
it's the quarterback keep. That's why he's the leading rusher.
But at the same time he can throw the football
and their tight ends are darn good.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
The tight ends aren't good.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
I agree that does stand out when you look at
big rapids offense right there a spread veer. So they're
like kind of like a Meskeigan type team or like
a Forest Hills Northern. What's key for them to have
success tonight because they like to get the ball in
a short passing it.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
But they run a lot of jet motion right and
a lot of jet motion. They're going to read coverage
and read what the linebackers and how you're adjusting to
the motion. Is the safety bumping over to the hash
if all things are equal in the middle of the field,
are they bumping out a linebacker? Which means then the
backside away from motion is key. They'll run some GT
so guard tackle pull. Everybody talks about GT County. You know,

(20:45):
I've got down their top plays, power duo QB runs.
They'll run the orbit motion and then they'll run a
return option too, which I could see being something they
want to do tonight. And then they've got an h
seam in a y cross for those out there that
love the passing games.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
So it's interesting.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
I think coach hit right on the head.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
They need to stay ahead of the change.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
They don't want to have to get And everybody says this, right,
we don't want third and long, right, we want third
and three. Well, it's it's true, especially in a big
game like that like this, and especially early.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
In the game.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
So that a. The other thing they want to do
when they have the ball is keep the ball, So
you need a Christian doesn't get the ball.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
Time of possession is.

Speaker 1 (21:29):
Something they'll look at too.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
It's going to be fascinating Big Rapids and United Christian
for a Division four regional championship game at Eagle Stadium
here in Hudsonville. That will do it for the Bowen

Christian for the sixteenth time.

Pretty impressive.

Sixteen out of twenty three seasons Unity Christians spent in
the postseason.

Yeah, I was telling your coach Tibby has done exactly
what anybody should want to do when you're starting a
program from scratch. The success it is amazing. And think
about this, Okay, the city of Hudsonville, two pretty good
football teams. What if they were all on one team?

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Yikes, combined twenty one and one. Yeah, I mean that's
some football.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
Portland's got the same thing going well, and you throw
PW in therey. I was thinking about that, if you
put Portland, PW and St. Pats into one school, I
was gonna add up the enrollment, see what division they'd be,
and that'd be one heck of a football team.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
All Right, we're just about set to go. We're gonna
have the national anthem and then we'll have.

The keys to victory to tonight's game between Big Rapids
and Unity Christian.

district title in Division seven, and have their eyes set
on more. Shelby went five and four this year, their

one in the regular season and advance to the Division
