Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Dana with producer Anthony Eddie Martini, our bosses here
and I just want to let you know we are
Houston's holiday station. Eddie, we are also Santa's favorite station.
I had the opportunity to speak with Santa. He is
on my podcast. He is a huge fan of Saint
Jude Children's Research Hospital. It's true and he says, and
I'm gonna show you this shirt. He says, everyone's got

(00:20):
a T shirt. You're wearing one too, but this shirt
saves lives. And he encourages everyone to become a partner
in hope. And Eddie, you're the one who kind of
started this whole thing for Sonny maybe seven years ago.
I think we're at seven years. Started out with the
Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital golf fundraiser, and then you and.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Mark Sherman thought what if we do this on the radio. Yeah,
what's happened?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
I believe it all started actually eleven.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Years ago, eleven with the golf turn the golf.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Tournament, and it started out very very slow, and we
ended up catching some momentum. And I'm very very proud
to say after eleven years, after eleven years of a
golf tournament and seven years of the Radiothon, and we
expanded the Radiothon to our sister stations, actually modeling your

(01:14):
success and all the things that you did.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
And last year I was.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Very proud to report that we generated over a million dollars,
which the goal for that one year, and.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
The goal is to surpass that this year. I feel
like Jerry Lewis.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I know, right soon you're going to have to be
doing it the whole day.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
But here's the thing.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
We're doing the Radiothon now. The golf tournament hasn't even happened.
So once we finalize all our partners in Hope this afternoon,
you still have an amazing golf tournament. You put all
that money together, and we have certainly followed through in
our commitment to those kids at Saint Jude.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yes we have, and the golf tournament is already pacing
very very well. So I'm pretty darn sure. As long
as the folks listening right now, can you lending their support,
We're going to be over a million dollars.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
It's amazing.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
And for those of you who have not been to
Memphis to tour the hospital, I suggest you do it.

Speaker 5 (02:11):
It is.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
I'll be honest. When I first went there, I really
wasn't quite sure what I was in for, and I'm
embarrassed to say I didn't know much about Saint Jude.
And I'm a born and raised Catholic out of New Orleans.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
So I should have known you. I should have known.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
About Saint Jude. But once I learned about it, it
certainly got my attention. And I watched these beautiful little
children get pulled around in little red wagons, and I
heard one amazing miracle story after another. I talked to
families and they cried on my shoulder, telling me their

(02:49):
stories and telling me that they they didn't think that
their child was going to live. And now I'm hearing
about nineteen year old children, twenty year old children. And
the cool thing about Jude is, you know, you go
through the treatment, but then you are their patient and
your family is their patients for the rest of their lives. Uh.
It's it's just an amazing program, and it's uh. I

(03:12):
get the opportunity in the industry we're in to work
with a lot of great organizations, and this one just
wrapped its its arms around my heart. And I'm so
very proud to be a.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Part of it, and we want you to be a
part of it too. We know KBR is our topeboard sponsor,
Mattress Mac once again sponsoring this whole two day radiothonic extravagance,
and we've been playing videos of Mac asking for prayers
and for people to go to Gallery Furniture because he's
gonna have some heart surgery next week, but yet he's
still thinking about the kids. What was it about Saint
Jude that, really, you say it wrapped itself around your heart?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
What was it that touched you so much? Eddie?

Speaker 4 (03:48):
Well, the actually, the more I learn about it, the
more impressed I get. And I knew that it was
a place that children went to, you know, to get
treatment for cancer.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
I didn't realize.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
That their protocols were used all over and passed on
to other hospitals. When I first started calling people to
ask them to get involved, they would say, well, why
am I doing something for a hospital in Memphis? I
should just work with Texas Children's here. And I was like,
let me explain to you. I said, they're associated with

(04:20):
M D Anderson, are associated with all these hospitals all
over the world. And once I found that out and
found out that you know, no one's paying a penny
for the treatment. But it's not just the treatment, it's
the it's the you know, airline trips to get their
hotel stays. But when you tour Saint Jude, it's it's
amazing the details that they I mean, they have thought

(04:42):
of everything.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
They have.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
They have activities for the children who aren't getting treated
that are part of the family who in many cases
they are kind of forgotten.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
While this is dedicated to siblings.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Well there you have and that's why I brought that
up right.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Because you knew and really that's our challeng and siblings,
family members, grandparents, aunts, uncles, the family of these kids,
because it is a family effort and lots of support
that goes into these kids getting better.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
But I mean even when when you're check when the
children are checking in obviously very intimidating time for kids
to go to a hospital, the counters are very very
low for the children to sit at. And if you
go into the cafeteria.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
The cafe, they have thought of everything.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
And you know, the the way when you walk into
the place, it's got its own I hate to use
the word smell.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
But it's not a hospital.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
It does not smell like your typical hospital. And they
have really thought of everything. Just a lot of caring people.
And when you look at when it all started in
sixty two, correct the curate where it was then and
where it is now.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Eighty percent now.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Yeah, And I mean what we're asking you listeners to
do is spend nineteen dollars a month. That is a
you know, that's a happy meal for your family. Maybe
even a happy meal might be more than that. It
might be today rds, but just you know, do away
with one unhealthy happy meal and save children's lives. It's

(06:19):
not a lot to ask when you consider what it does.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
We can shoulder the burden, that's what we can do.
You know, where our lives are blessed, we can shoulder
the burden. And we've heard so many stories. My aunt
had been donating. Didn't ever even think that I'd be
a beneficiary. So it's just a nice thing to do,
especially during the holidays, to just give.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Hey, look, I have three beautiful children that are healthy,
and I thank God for that every day. But it
sure is good to know there's a Saint Jude. If
anything ever changes or any friends, or any listeners or clients.
It's just comforting to know that they're there.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Well, you can become a partner and Hope and Eddie
thank you for giving this opportunity to us. Then we
can share this whole story with our listeners and get
them involved because a lot of people like you didn't know,
and that's what we're trying to do. We're trying to
share the beautiful story of Saint Jude.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Well, Hey, thank you all Sunny listeners, Thanks for listening,
thanks for contributing, and I hope everyone has a wonderful
holiday season.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Merry Christmas, Merylway Christmas, Mary.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Chraat, thanks for having me.

Speaker 5 (07:21):
And it's super easy to become that monthly donor two pledging,
as Eddie said, just nineteen dollars a month. You are
helping these kids at Saint Jude fight cancer. We just
need eleven more partners and Hope by noon to hit
our goal. We can get there because of you. Put
