Speaker 1 (00:01):
Sunday nighty nine point one, Houston's best variety of the
eighties nineties, and today, welcome to our show. I'm Dana
with producer Anthony, and we've got the three things you
need to know to get your Veterans Day, November eleventh started.
We are going to be honoring our men and women
who have served our country downtown this morning. We'll honor
veterans at the Houston Salutes American Heroes Commemoration and Parade.
(00:24):
Ceremony begins at ten at nine hundred Bagbee and the
parade will follow at eleven thirty. Now it is Veterans Day,
So is the government open yet? Well, we're getting close.
The House will probably come back tomorrow to vote excuse me,
on a plan approved by the Senate yesterday. They got
enough votes from both sides. So when the government does reopen,
(00:47):
hopefully fingers crossed this week, we will be able to
get that snap benefits to those who are eligible, and
it should be easier to travel by Thanksgiving, because I
know lots of you made plans and you're going. Is
our flight to be canceled? Hopefully we will get that resolved.
Now Veterans Day this morning coldest morning since February. We
(01:08):
had some light freezes around town. It was thirty eight
degrees earlier. We're now at about forty degrees in Uptown
and it's going to warm up beautifully to seventy three
for a wonderful Veterans Day parade. And again right now
it's forty in Uptown and you're up to date on
Sunday ninety nine point one, tell me something good brought
to us by our friends at Goodwill Houston. Well, it's
(01:30):
Veterans Day and Houston is rolling out the red carpet
as we honor all you men and women who have
served our country. A big break on your favorite eats.
Texas Roadhouse free meal from eleven until two, just bring
your proof of service. Golden Corral free dinner Buffet four
o'clock until closed, Ninphuss Uptown and Navigation, fifty percent off torches, Tacos,
(01:51):
free taco and drink, and again just show your ID
McDonald's a free meal. I love this Jiffy Loube fifty
percent off an oil chains Law Matt and also offering
you great discounts WAA Burger, free Taketo and sixteen ounce
cold or hot beverage. And by the way, Waaburger has
its Christmas menu out, Anthony. It's amazing. It is this
(02:13):
Waterberry refresher, sweet BlackBerry lemonade, real blueberry Birsties, and a
cloud of cold whip ma'am. Oh my god. And they're
actually sponsoring when we flip the switch on Friday afternoon
at five, yes, water Burger will be here, so check
them out. That's so festive. And I just love that
all these businesses are honoring our veterans, so we honor
(02:36):
you as well, veterans. Thank you so much for all
you've done. Producer, Anthony Dane.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
We'd love to see these stories over at Southwest Public
School International Leadership Academy, the kids were constantly asking for
improvements to their playground and it become run down, unsafe
without a proper budget to fix it up. So enter
Texans quarterback CJ. Stroud and his charitable foundation led by
his mother, Kimberly Shroud. They reached out, found out what
was going on, and then got to work remodeling playground
(03:00):
even cooler. Dane, it's going to be unveiled for the
students today at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Mom Kimberly says,
they really just wanted the community to know that they
see them and they know it's going to bring so
much joy to the kids, and we know here that's
what it's all about. So thank you to the CJ.
Stroud Foundation and as Mom Kimberly for the new playground
over the International Leadership Academy.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
I think she thoroughly enjoys that her son found his
calling and she certainly found you see it on her face. Yep.
And there's another person who found her calling. Her name
is Morgan Fisher. She's a nurse here in the Houston
area and she is doing something incredible for victims of
human trafficking. Texas ranks number one in the country for
trafficking cases, and Morgan, a labor and delivery nurse, had
(03:43):
a chance encounter with a survivor, and this encounter turned
it into a cause for her a mission. She has
since trained social workers and healthcare workers to spot and
support victims playing She's placed discrete hotline task as in
patient restrooms. More than sixty rescue tabs have been pulled
(04:04):
so far, and Morgan's efforts have earned her the twenty
twenty five National Magnet Nurse of the Year for transformational leadership. Wow,
if not incredible, Morgan, we honor you as well today
on this Veteran's Day. Thank you for doing that incredible
work and for our feel good stories. Each weekday mornings
set a preset on the new and improved iHeartRadio app
(04:27):
to Sonny Natty nine point one, Sunny naety nine point one,
Houston's best variety of the eighties nineties, and today I'm
Dana with producer Anthony. I think what we need to
do the days leading up to Thanksgiving in order to
make this true? We learned at our nearly impossible question
at six point forty this morning that ninety ninety one
percent of us think that we don't need to get
(04:48):
along and agree on everything. Most enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.
Now here's the deal, though, There's always that one person
who refuses to tone it down, and that person in
my family was my father. We all agreed, we wanted
to be kind, we wanted to be open and inviting,
and then there was Dad, and it was just he
(05:09):
just wouldn't listen. He's an only child and he was
used to getting it his way. He was the one
thorn in our side during the holidays, so you just
kind of remove yourself and say, thank god football's on, right,
so he could just go into the room. There's always
a place to escape to you, right, right, But overall,
you've got to have it come to an agreement. Look,
let's not talk about these things, so we can enjoy
(05:31):
his feast together, and let's focus on things we're thankful for,
like each other and so food. Right, So you have
to if you've got that one person, you have a
little bit of time to figure out a way to
help them see and understand that it's more important that
we all get along than that you get your way.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
But you know, some people just they cannot be reasoned
with dan And as much do it prep and all
that stuff that you do, you still end up with
that person that's going to be like that.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Maybe that's your story, or maybe you figured out a
way where everyone really does get along. Just for three
hours on Thanksgiving, give it three, give it two hours, okay,
least come tell us. I would love to hear about
your Thanksgiving feast and how, especially if you've got a
big gathering, how everyone gets along seven one three, Because
if ninety percent of people say it's possible. It must
(06:21):
be happening, right, It's happening somewhere somewhere seven two one
two five ninety nine one Sunday ninety nine point one
Houston's Best Variety of the eighties nineties, and today a
beautiful Veterans Day, as we thank you so much for
serving our country and your family for letting you pursue
your calling. We appreciate you. So many restaurants around town
(06:43):
just rolling out the red carpet for you guys today.
It's gonna be amazing. Big ceremonies going to start for
our heroes downtown at Bagbe around ten this morning. Weather gorgeous.
We're gonna go up to seventy two, real, Sonny, right now,
it's a crisp forty degrees and we're talking about the
majority of us say it's possible to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.
(07:04):
You don't need to agree on everything. And we're asking
you if, if it is possible, if that really is true,
how is it for your Thanksgiving feast? And it said
in my family, there was always that one person that
wouldn't agree to the terms and conditions, no religion, no politics.
Dad was going to talk about whatever he wanted, and
(07:25):
so we would just end up leaving the room when
he got obnoxious and turn on football and he'd be happy.
You move to another room and eat pie that my
Grandma Bow would make. Oh my gosh, so many great
memories of Grandma Bo's. She would make this rhubarb pie
that was absolutely incredible. And we're asking you about your
Thanksgiving experience, especially if you're going to be gathering with
(07:48):
a lot of people. Now, yesterday we talked to Mela.
We were talking about our favorite Christmas songs. And today
we've got Mela's bff, Julia on the bus, hey thirteen
years old. Then Julia shared that she's gonna go to
Grandma's twenty people are going to be gathering. Now, Julia, honey,
is everyone get along at your Thanksgiving feast most of
(08:10):
the times? Yes, but my siblings can make it all
about themselves. Oh no, are Julia, how many siblings you have?
And where are you in the lineup? Are you the oldest?
I am the oldest, You're the mature one, right, And
they're just like, stop it, guys, would you just cut
it out?
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Well?
Speaker 1 (08:29):
How do you get them? Is it your job to
calm them? Down or do you just leave the room? No,
the room smart at your parents job, very very I
love it. I think that is so funny. So Julia,
you crack me up. Let me ask you do you
(08:51):
like Christmas music? I love Christmas music? All right? Since
we had your buddy on yesterday and she sang it
was it last Chris? Miss yet? Why don't you say
you've got a beautiful voice? You do, Julia? Sing us
your favorite Christmas song? Mela, you sing it together? Sure? Hello,
Hi me, good to talk to you again. Honey. All right,
(09:13):
sing us here you do a little duet for us.
Right now in mahar is the Christmas tree farm. There's
a tree. Don't lie in the barn. We run inside
out from the colt and this is a dream. And
the slaves and they're warm and they're safe. They wait
to see if blake in a small sweet dreams of
holly and rape and mistakes up for Puve and everything
(09:36):
is I see him.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Blue And you'll hear that.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Are all the students looking back at you, going, what
are you girls doing? Yeah? We have a whole crowd.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Oh you're so good.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Did you hear our announcement when we flip the switch
to Christmas music. No, we do it at Friday at
five o'clock. This Friday afternoon at five a clock, okay,
tell everyone on the bus okay, okay, And we thank
you guys so much for singing and listening to us.
You guys are amazing. Yeah, every day, you guys, We
(10:12):
love you and Julia and everyone, thanks so much for
listening to Sonny. And soon we will become Houston's holiday
music station. Okay, okay, somebody day. Bye,
