Speaker 1 (00:02):
Good afternoon, Southeast Texas. You're listening to the Roy West
Show here on News Talk five sixty KLV, folks. And remember,
if you're driving down the road, you're getting out of
your car, you can always download the free IHARP radio
app and stream the show live wherever you are through
your phone or mobile device. And also this show and

(00:23):
all my shows are podcasts on iHeart Apple Podcast, Android Podcast, Spotify,
all those different different platforms. And I do not have
a guest in this first segment. I will in the second,
but I am talking about the upcoming City of Beaumont
bond election that is happening. Early voting has occurred. The

(00:46):
election is November fourth, and we do have a website
at Boma bonds dot com to be able to get
all the information you would like, but I just kind
of wanted to walk through it to be able to
answer any questions. With the bond issue, we currently have
five bonds and then a venue tax, so there are

(01:07):
six items that are being voted on, and the venue
tax is just would be at two percent increase in
hotel occupancy tax for people that are staying overnight in
the hotels, and that two percent would go to pay
for a new convention center that we are looking to

(01:28):
build in downtown Beaumont. So there is no cost to
the resident unless the resident stays at one of the
local hotels, but otherwise it is paid for by people
staying at the hotel. And it is something that many
cities charge, so it wouldn't be a different sales tax

(01:48):
than most cities already or collecting venue tax as far so,
just as a point of information. But then I'm going
to talk about the other propositions and I'm going to
break them down by proposition and Proposition A is for infrastructure, drainage,
streets and sidewalks, and again this information can be found

(02:10):
at beaumontmonds dot com. And that is a fifty eight
point two million dollar package which includes a sidewalk initiative,
which a big part of that is ten million dollars,
and it's there would also be a funding for a
citywide sidewalk initiative so that we could know, you know,

(02:35):
primarily I believe around schools would be where we're looking at,
but certainly other areas of need. And the cost for
that is a total of fourteen dollars and twenty five
cents for a home that's valued at one hundred and
fifty four thousand dollars per month, and we have a

(02:57):
calculator on that website, so you could be sure. You
could be sure to check that out, but I do
like people to know, so it's very nominal cost. And
with that, with Proposition A, I talked about the seat
walk sidewalk initiative, but then there would be street improvements,
and the streets are listed by name. It's twenty million

(03:20):
dollars estimated for that Lucas Drive, Avenue, A Avenue, c
Carroll Street, Sycamore Street, dou Set Avenue, Dollinger Road, Cottonwood Street,
Seventh Avenue, and Gladys Avenue. And I believe Gladys, which
is one of the major archier arteries here in Beaumont,

(03:44):
is the biggest project, so that would be a big project.
The drainage improvements includes the broad Oak Street outfall ditch
of West Lucas Drives, storm sewer rehabilitation, and city storms
who are cleaning. And that's for twenty eight point two

(04:04):
million dollars. And what that would cost to homeowner at
one hundred and fifty four thousand is three dollars and
fourteen cents a month just for that one proposition. So
there's the five different propositions plus the venue tax. And
what you know, there are people that say that you know,

(04:25):
the money can be moved otherwise if you vote for
Proposition A, the fifty eight point two million dollar package
can only be used within these initiatives and if something
comes in under they can. If there's an overage in
one of the other areas in Prop A, they can
use that money. But sometimes the bonds can be less

(04:49):
than that. So so monthly impact of three dollars and
fourteen cents as a point of reference. Uh. And then
I'm going to move into Prop B, which is Public
Safety and facil So it is multiple buildings, one of
them is and that's for a total of one hundred
and forty seven point four million dollars. And that includes

(05:12):
the new police headquarters, a replacement of fire Station Number
four which is currently found on the corner of Wes
Lucas and Gladys, a new modern animal care and adoption center,
as well as improvements to the real time crime centers,
a large sports and community center, and a new multi

(05:35):
purpose community center at Alice Keith Park. And the breakdown
for cost is about sixty one million for the police headquarters.
The fire station is six point seven million dollars, and
the public safety and technology improvements is just a million dollars.

(05:56):
Additional facility assessments and improvements for existing city buildings is
ten million dollars. The animal care and Adoption center is
seven point nine million dollars. The multi purpose center at
Alice Keith Park is eleven point two million dollars, and

(06:16):
also it would be a little bit more than that,
but we received a grant if we build it from
the state for about one point nine million that they
would contribute. And then a multipurpose sports and community facility
that would be much larger that could host sporting events
and tournaments as well as community classes and training for
fifty million dollars. And the cost per month for just

(06:39):
Proposition B for one hundred and fifty four thousand dollars
home is seven dollars and ninety four cents a month.
So again you can go to Beaumont Bonds dot com
for a lot of the same information that we provide
for this. And when we moved to Proposition C, which
is parks, trails and Recreation, that is a total of

(07:03):
thirty seven point two million dollars, and it would be
playground equipment and parks improvements, and these are for Cottonwood Park,
Fletcher Mini Park, Pearl Steam Park which is an Amelia
Guspin Park, Colliers Ferry Park, Magnolia Park, Rogers Park, Terrell Park,

(07:26):
Riverfront Park at Roberts Park and Central Park for three
million dollars. Renovation of park restroom facilities for one point
eight million dollars. And then Terrell Park, which is a
regional destination which is where our botanical gardens, our Cattail marsh,

(07:48):
our nature Center, our golf course as well as the stables,
would be getting a huge improvement of twenty five million dollars.
And then out of Athletic Complex Number four which is
out on College Street, it would convert the softball fills
on Complex four at the base ball fills, upgrade the restrooms, dugouts, fencing,

(08:08):
bullpens and other amenities for year round use for seven
point four million dollars, which would also be for economic
development as well because there is a need for those
and there's a lot of tournaments that thirty seven point
two million dollars for one hundred and fifty four thousand
dollars home breaks down to a two dollars a month
cost for a point of reference, and again go to

(08:30):
bomat bonds dot com for more information. Then I'm going
to get to Proposition D, which is the Riverfront Park Extension.
It's a twelve point five million dollar project includes eight
point two five acre expansion of Riverfront Park with a
new plaza at five point fifty five Main Street, which

(08:50):
is where the old AT and T building was. It's
been torn down. Planned amenities include a splash pad, an amphitheater, restroom,
decorative lighting, and space that aims to serve as a
destination for residents, families, and visitors. And that cost is
sixty seven cents per month for one hundred and fifty

(09:12):
four thousand dollars house. So we do have a calculator
on boumant bonds dot com that you can pull up,
and it also you can get your appraise value at
the appraisal district and you can plug in that number
and get these numbers specific for your house. Proposition E

(09:35):
consists of eight point nine million dollars to extend Point
Parkway north by six tenths of a mile. It connects
Northwest Parkway directly to Highway one oh five. The project
includes new roadways, sidewalks, and utility infrastructure with the aim
of creating a safer, more efficient route for Beaumont residents

(09:58):
and supporting future growth. So it is an economic development tool.
The costs for one hundred and fifty four thousand dollars
houses forty eight cents per month at the eight point
nine million dollars. There are graphics and other information as
well at the Beaumont bonds dot com if you want
to get that information. And the purpose is mayor I

(10:22):
just want to make sure people have good information. When
people say where did these propositions come from? They came
from a strategic long term plan that has been underway
with the city for quite some times. But these projects
can't be funded through the general fund. Back in January,
we had appointed a bond advisory committee of seventeen residents

(10:47):
here in Beaumont that spent a number of meetings all
of which are videoed, where they went through and made suggestions,
and then in August our council voted that this would
be the bond propositions based on recommendations made by them
and the public. There were many open houses along the way,
and so there's a lot of good information here and

(11:09):
this is about quality of life things for the residents
of Beaumont, citizens of Beaumont, as well as economic development
for Beaumont. Many times when you go to cities, many
cities offer bond elections every five to seven years in
their cities. Beaumont has not had a bond election in

(11:30):
forty three years, so it's been a long time. But
this is also very restricted funds and it is overseen
by the Texas Attorney General's Office as well as city council,
and there is a bond Facilitation Committee that will also
have oversight over the expenditures. We're about out of time,

(11:51):
but stay tuned a segment number two right after this message.
We are back with the Roy West Show here on
News Talk five sixty k l v I and folks.
This is one of my favorite guests, Katie Sally with

(12:12):
the mail room, a recent, relatively recent owner of the mailroom.
Her and Frank, her husband, and bought it from her
in laws who in the mailroom is is well known
here throughout Southeast Texas. And Katie, welcome, welcome back to
the show.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Thank you, Roy I'm sure you tell everybody that they're
your favorite guests, but thank you for telling.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Me always are.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Well, it's a pleasure to have you and uh so
tell people. I know, Katie, you wear lots of hats
and but this is an important one to you and
y'all have you. It's it's you've got great Uh, you've
got a great business there. You sell lots of different
items that you can't find anywhere else. Yeah, very hue,

(13:02):
and people can ship from there.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Hence the mail room's been around.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
My in laws.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Purchased the business in around two thousand, between two thousand
and two thousand and two, but before that it had
been long established for over a decade at that point,
so it's been around the Beaumont area for a very
long time. We have the best customers in the whole
wide world. They're very loyal and they come to us
all the time, and we're very very thankful for that.

(13:29):
Don't take that for granted. But it started out as
a little shipping company and when there wasn't a ups
on our FedEx store on the corner, and it's grown
from there. Now it is still a shipping company, but
we've expanded to a really vast retail operation gift shop
and home decors, and we also have a store import Arthur,

(13:50):
Texas as well, so we are we've expanded over the
years and we're very fortunate and we're really excited to
host for the twenty five year in a row our
holiday open house with the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, and
this is probably our biggest event of the year. Frank
and I did take over the store this January of

(14:11):
twenty five and we had a really successful open house
that with the Beaumont Chamber. We were very very proud
of that. Thank you Roy for coming to that as well.
But this one, I think is going to rival that one.
We have quite a bit of people that have committed
to attend and we just look forward to spend some
time with our customers and networking and showing off some

(14:33):
great things. And something different we're going to do this
year is we're going to have a pop up or
two from some local vendors around town so they can
see some local art and I think there will be
a hat maker there as well to do some custom
hats designs. And we're just excited. We love a party.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Well and it is it is a wonderful place and
catch tell people you know, uh, y'all are kind of
cutting edge too, because uh, Majohn's just become a relatively
new hot thing. Compare it to tickleball. If you don't
know about it, you're gonna learn about it.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
And yes, it is, Yesenroy, I mean, we say Majohn's,
but I bet your mom played majong back in the day.
You've been around for a long, long, long time. But
it's definitely hot right now. It's super trending. I think
it's the.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
New age mom's bridge, if you will.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
And we have a large Majong section at the store,
the largest one here in Southeast Texas, and we host
monthly Majong nights at the mail room, which are super successful.
We have a lot of fun at those events. So yeah,
and those they're they're very well attended. Follow us on
Facebook or our website or Instagram. We post those invitation

(16:00):
since our next one is actually going to take place
on November the twenty first, and it's a benefit for
the Alzheimer's Association, so people can come and play Majeong.
And we the very very first day that we launched
the invitation, we already have like five tables reserved, so
it's going to be a big event. But all proceeds
are benefiting a charity that is near and dear to

(16:22):
my heart, and that is the Alzheimer's Association. So so
if there's still time to sign up, if anybody wants
to come play moong with us, we have.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Fun well and I'm sure it will sell out. And
you know, when you're looking for gifts, you know the
mailroom by the name. You wouldn't necessarily know that's the
place to go, but and for many they know that.
I get it, but we're talking about it on the radio,

(16:50):
and I'm assuming we're reaching some people that maybe have
never walked in either one of your stores. So let's
spend a couple of minutes on that.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
We have a large sele we say gift shop, and
we are truly a large gift shop. We have our
Beaumont store is six thousand square feet and our Port
Arthur story is about twenty five hundred, and we have
a lot of gifts whatever you're looking for, from baby
to wedding, to birthdays to just special events. We've got

(17:19):
a lot of gift items there too, but we also
have apparel we have men's and women's apparel. We have
kitchen gourmet items, we have serving where entertainment pieces for
the home. We have home decorps, we have a lot
of holiday items. I mean, it's really just you name
it and you can come and find a little bit

(17:40):
of everything at the mailroom. And one of the things
that's kind of a well known secret, well known secret
if you will, as we have a whole holiday gift
basket line service line that we do during the holidays.
It's not really a year long deal, but we have
gift baskets main for corporate entities or businesses if they

(18:02):
want to give back to their special clients or customers,
or if you have a big family and you want
to you know, you need something in terms of a basket.
We have a serious gift basket line at the mail
room as well, where we curate custom baskets based on
what you need, what's what's what is the what's kind
of customer are we you know, talking for and we

(18:25):
deliver and uh we it's it's it's something that we're
really proud of as well. We haven't really advertised it
that much yet, we haven't had to, but I think
next year. We're going to dabble into that. We just
launched our website just the last month, and we're super
proud of that. We've never had a website where you
could purchase any of our items online. So I mean,

(18:45):
for me as a new owner, it just makes sense.
We're a mail we're a mail service company, ups em
FedEx and the post off. The post office is coming
to us twice a day. Why not ship some of
our stuff that's in our store out, you know, so
that's taken off as well, and we'll start advertising our
gift basket line on our website.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
Well, I know you never stand still, and I know
you and Frank are always forward thinking, and I'm excited
to see everything that's coming. And certainly the foundation that's
been laid, Like you said, that's right at thirty five
years the mailroom's been here, so most people that have
been in Beaumont for a period of time are familiar

(19:26):
with it. And y'all also do mailings for people too,
large mailings we do.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
As a matter of fact, I believe the city of
Beaumont is one of our customers. We have a large
list of businesses around our Southeast Texas region from Harden,
Orange and Jefferson County. We do some of the plants
where I'm really proud that we've brought some of the
plants on this year and for bulk melt. So if

(19:53):
there's a business that's sending out bills, or they're sending
out marketing items, or there's campaign items, people can come
to us and send out and we'll take care of it.
It's a one stop shop. We'll stuff it, seal it,
market get it in the mill and we can take
care of that as well. We had a lot of
things going on at the mail room.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
I know you do and tell people about the November
thirteenth what they can expect.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
November thirteenth. Our holiday Christmas holiday party is going to
be a great event. Everybody's welcome. It's four pm to
six pm. We'll have Heavyer, Dervs, beverages, a couple of
different pop up items. Haley Fagger Designs is going to
do some custom art and with little champagne bottles that

(20:37):
that are custom painted. For gift items, we'll have Seashell.
They are doing custom hats plus all everything that we offer.
We're going to have the store all decorated for the holidays. Come, one,
come all. The more the merrier and literally the more
the merrier this Christmas holiday season.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
So we hope to see.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Our audience out there, and thank you for giving me
the opportunity to expand our reach on your show.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
Well, it's a privilege and I will tell you everything
you said. Plus it's quite the social occasion, so it's
a great way to go and see people that you know.
I love it because I'll see people that I don't
always see that I've known, and but you know, it's
it's a great time.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
It is, it is, and we hope we see you
that I'm.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
Going to be there. It's on my calendar. And if
you would tell people your address again.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
So that they know South Dollan Road, if you know
where the Waterburger is on Dollan and Calder, we're right
there in that shopping center next to on stage, our
dear friends next door. Or you can visit us if
you don't if you can't make it, you can visit
us online at www dot shopthemailroom dot com.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Well that this is Katie Sally. We're talking about the
mail Room with two locations. In November thirteenth, the Big
Christmas open house and folks, I just thank you for
coming on the show. Thank you for all that you do.
Thank you for your beautiful voice that you share with
us so often with various events. But I will talk

(22:08):
to you as soon.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
We are back with the Roy West Show here on
News Talk five sixty klv. I and folks, remember, if
you're driving down the road you're about to get out
of your car, you can always download the free iHeart
Radio app and stream the show live wherever you are.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
And of course, this show and all the shows are on.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
Podcast on Apple podcast, Android, podcast, Spotify, and iHeart Radio
has a podcast section. So I am talking to the
Better Business Bureau. I've got Lee N.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
Schroeder on with me. Welcome to the show.

Speaker 5 (22:47):
Thank you. I'm glad to be here.

Speaker 4 (22:50):
It's a pleasure to have you. And most people are
pretty familiar with the Better Business Bureau.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
But y'all do a lot more than people know, and
we will fit a little bit of time on. You
know what it is you do, But tell me tell
people about the job that you have.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
I am the Education Foundation Director for the BBB, which
we put on educational programming. You know, our big goal
is for professional development and leadership. We're trying to assist
the leaders of today. And what I get get excited

(23:27):
about is training leaders of tomorrow. You and I aren't
going to be here forever.

Speaker 4 (23:33):
That's right, That is right, and there is so much
good information.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
And as we were talking before we went on the air,
you know, it is it's always been an evolving world,
but things seem to move at a faster pace nowadays
with AI and technology coming into the mix.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
I mean, there are some things that stay the same,
but you know, if you're going to stay relevant in
a business, oftentimes you have to pivot. You have to
make changes and to continue to be relevant. So and
I know the BBB works to protect consumers from you know,

(24:13):
people that have bad business practices, and it's a good
source to go to just the vet people and there
are accredited companies that are a part of the BBB.
But y'all, as you point out, y'all do so much
more than that we do.

Speaker 5 (24:32):
That's my job is planning the educational programming for the year.
We also do scholarships. So we have three main events
during the year. We do Spark Leadership Summit in February,
which is breakout sessions and all geared towards leadership in
professional development, the Torch Awards of Ethics, which is celebrating

(24:57):
the people that do do good business in Beaumont with
an awards show kind of a red carpet glam night.
And then in the fall we do Professional Women's Conference,
which is all about developing and empowering the women of
the Greater Golden Triangle. And around that we do scholarships,

(25:18):
Students of Integrity, and the Brunch and Learn, which is
what I'm talking about today a little bit. We are
bringing in quite the wizard from Waco, Texas, from a
company called connect Wise, and her name is Jenna Minor.
She's the keynote speaker, and she is talking about cybersecurity,

(25:39):
your data, your people, and your business and how to
protect them all. And we are thrilled to have her
come in. It's been one of the most popular so
far of subjects. People just instantly, you know, clicking on
and getting tickets.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
Well, and you know cybersecurity. I know, having privilege of
being mayor here in Beaumont right now, but school districts, cities, entities,
all across public entities but also private the public that
you hear more about get held hostage because so much
of our information is online, and data is stored in

(26:25):
the cloud, and how you do business is often through
the internet, your software, and so when there's a problem,
it can stop your business and it can certainly steal
your data. So whereas you know, ten fifteen, maybe even
five years ago, you know, people might have reluctantly went kicking,

(26:48):
screaming into this computer age, But I know on my
mortgage business, we are completely an online business.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
So protecting your data, protecting your software, protecting your computers
becomes very important and most of us just know how
to turn them on.

Speaker 5 (27:08):
Yeah, And I don't know if you're aware of this, Roy,
but one of the latest things that really led me
to this choice of subject matter is now it's getting
so high tech that the fishers can access your business
through somebody's phone. So when an employee is now putting
their business at risk without knowing how or why, you know,

(27:33):
simply it's just crazy how the system keeps changing, and
just when people think they're protected, you know, another layer
of threats. Every time those cell phones get a little
bit fancier and do a little bit more, they also
lead the hackers to our workplaces and that's a little
bit scary for me and you with everyone's personal data.

Speaker 1 (27:57):
Well exactly, and that is something that many of us,
maybe from a technical standpoint, will never understand, but we
do need to be aware of it so that we
can make sure that our businesses and our devices are
protected because you know, we're talking about businesses, but also

(28:17):
your personal information and the information you store. And you know,
whether people's identity or credit card information or bank account
is stolen, you know, it's it will turn your world
upside down.

Speaker 5 (28:32):
Yes, And the according to Jenna, who tracks you know,
all the areas and she's been tracking our area, the
biggest threats in our area seem to be to the
healthcare probably because it's the largest employer the healthcare systems
and the financial institutions are, according to her, is the

(28:52):
highest risks of businesses in our area. And I'm sure
she's going to explain how she got to that could clue,
but it makes sense to me because of all the
data that they store.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
Well absolutely, and I know that you know, with these
educational seminars it is also you know, it's important just
to stay on top of I mean again, I'm going
to say you know, I use technology a lot every day,
several times a day, but I don't begin to understand

(29:28):
how things work. But I do need to know from
my viewpoint, how I can continue to best protect the
people I'm working with as well as myself in not
allowing access. And as you point out, the more sophisticated
they get, these hackers and sometimes just programs that are

(29:51):
constantly trying to penetrate, you've got to guard against it.
And there is a lot of information. I know, I
get ongoing training all the time, but uh, you know,
not everybody has those resources made available to them on
a regular basis.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
So this is a way to get that information.

Speaker 5 (30:11):
Yes, And it's it's as simple as a thirty dollars ticket,
you know. It's. Uh, this particular one is happening at
in Port Arthur at the Carl Parker Multipart per Center,
And you could go to the BBB dot org website
and get to us and buy tickets. There's a QR
code on our website. But or you could just call

(30:33):
us here at the BBB and.

Speaker 4 (30:35):
What's that phone number it is? Oh, you got it right,
I got it.

Speaker 5 (30:39):
For's zero nine five two seven three seven.

Speaker 4 (30:43):
Two two and the BBB here in Beaumont has just
got a new office building. And where are you all
located that now?

Speaker 5 (30:50):
We're over on Laurel Street, kind of by the Life
Share right next door to Life Share Blood and down
the street from the theater at forty three Laurel Street.

Speaker 1 (31:02):
Well, I know that the BBB has been making a
different for decades.

Speaker 4 (31:08):
In all of our lives.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
But this is just another way to get educated and
also as an accredited business, and my business is accredited
as well. You know, it's a way to network with
people that want to do things the right way and
get acquainted with those. So sometimes when people don't want
to meet new people and join around other people that

(31:32):
are like minded, this is a great way to do that.
And again the BBB website is a great way to
become an accredited member.

Speaker 4 (32:06):
Being on today.

Speaker 5 (32:07):
I enjoyed it.

Speaker 4 (32:08):
All right, talk to you soon.

Speaker 5 (32:09):
All right, bye bye.

Speaker 1 (32:14):
We are back with the Roy Wett Show here on
News Talk five sixty KLV. And folks, I've got with
me Kayla White and she is with the executive director
of the Southeast Texas non Nonprofit Development Center here in Beaumont.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
Welcome back to the show.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
Thank you, happy to be back.

Speaker 1 (32:34):
Well, tell folks about what the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development
Center does and why it's so important that we have
that here in Beaumont serving all the Southeast Texas.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
Yeah, the Nonfama Development Center is a nonprofit organization that
was established. Oh, we were established about sixteen years ago
by local funders in our community biz as they were
investing dollars into the nonprofit sector. They wanted them to
all have resources and tools to be more successful and

(33:08):
to be more sustainable, and so they came together and
established our center to provide training and resources and education
along with collaborative opportunities and partnerships that truly help nonprofits
be more efficient and more successful.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
Well, and you know, there are a lot of nonprofits
here in Southeast Texas that are so important to providing
services to a lot of different groups. And there's certainly
a lot of churches, a lot of organizations, and a
lot of individuals that support those. But in doing that,

(33:48):
you got to do it right every time, and oftentimes
things change. So to be able to educate these nonprofits
in their boards it becomes quite a It's an important
process because many times the board members are probably all
times the board members aren't paid, so you know, being

(34:11):
efficient and deliver them the information and make sure they
know what their responsibilities are as well as the nonprofit
as well. So tell people you know the services you'
all provide. And I know you have an upcoming a
meeting annually that you hold so and it's closed, so

(34:33):
it's not open to the public, but it is available
to those nonprofits.

Speaker 3 (34:37):
Yes, so well, first and foremost, I think it's important
in speaking about boards and volunteers and all that it's
important to understand that a nonprofit is a business and
you have to operate as such, even and even though
board members are volunteers, and although that nonprofits do rely
heavily on volunteers. There is still a legal and fiduciary

(35:01):
responsibility and so our center really works very diligently to
make sure that not only the nonprofits, but their boards
and their teams are equipped with the knowledge that they
need to understand what these fiduciary and legal roles and
responsibilities are. And again we do that through education and training.

(35:21):
We do custom resources custom training. If an organization board
itself needs a board retreat, then we can work with
them to establish training that will align with what their
specific needs are. We also offer professional staff development to nonprofits.

(35:41):
In addition to monthly trainings and resources. We partner with
funders to distribute grant opportunities to nonprofits we host. We
just hosted a board recruitment event that connects the nonprofits
with board members, potential board members, and so our upcoming conference.
This is an event that we host every other year.
This is one of the ways that because we are

(36:03):
a nonprofit, this is one of the ways that we
raise funds to support our center and combine our main
feature of training and education and the idea of collaboration.
And so it's a one day conference. It's hosted in Beaumont,
which is very unique to our area because there are
no other conferences in our region that are strictly designed

(36:25):
to benefit nonprofits. And it'll be on November the fourth.
We have reached our register our actually we've reached our capacity,
so we close registration. But if someone wants to support
our center and wants to support this conference, you can
still do so by visiting our website at SETX nonprofit
dot org. And a lot of people don't realize that

(36:46):
we actually serve over one hundred and sixty nonprofits currently
in our community.

Speaker 6 (36:52):
Which tells you the reach that the Development Center has
amongst all of these organizations, because we really are able
to go in and touch all of these organizations by
connecting them to vital resources well.

Speaker 7 (37:08):
And and another important part that you can do too
is you know, I know, in my role, I'll hear
from people are small groups of people that want to
start a nonprofit organization, you know, and uh, it's nice
that we have a center here that they can reach

(37:30):
out to because it's a it's a pretty complicated process
and as you said, it is a business.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
And if you're going to approach it and you're going
to get that nonprofit status. There's a lot of hurdles
that you have to jump through. There's regulations and and
then if people are going to be giving you money
and it's going to be tax exempt, you have to
meet that.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
Right, you know. And uh, And you hear about businesses.

Speaker 1 (37:54):
I know of one that just recently got theirs back
they lost it, and that you know, presents real funding
issues for them when they lose it, because some people
only give because they can write it off.

Speaker 3 (38:05):
Well that and you know, nonprofits are public charities and
because of that, they're relying on public trust, and so
if you lose that public trust sometimes it's very difficult
to get it back, especially when funders are concerned. And
we actually just receive some funding to start a program
that will help people individually with starting nonprofits, filing all
the paperwork, generating their bylaws and getting all of the

(38:29):
documents that are legally required filed. Because that's what a
lot of people struggle with the most.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
Well, I can believe that, and it's like many other things.
Education is necessary and when you start wanting to accept
people's money, you have a fiduciary responsibility to begin with.
But so a lot of those regulations help keep you

(38:57):
and the organization safe, and it's also making sure that
you're using everything as you say you will and then
and provide that documentation.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
Absolutely, yeah, so so important and that education and that
understanding is really critical.

Speaker 4 (39:14):
Well, we're only about sixty seconds out, so if you
could tell people again, if they want to get more information,
how do they go about locating you?

Speaker 3 (39:24):
So visit our website at sctxnonprofit dot org. All the
information about our center is there. If you are a
nonprofit and you want to join. We are a member
based organization, so if you want to join and be

Speaker 1 (39:55):
Thank you for all that you do in the community.
And I'm sorry we just have a short short time,
but we'll have you back again and again, thank you
so much for what you do for which benefits all
of Southeast Texas.

Speaker 4 (40:09):
Thank you all right, have a great day you too.

Speaker 1 (40:13):

a business and they provide all those resources. And folks,

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
