I don't know if Charon seen this in the our.
I didn't see it when it came out in arcades,
I didn't see this. Yeah, we talked about Metamorphic Force,
a Konami game which I like to cause Ultra Beast

meets X Men. And now we're going to talk about
another game from Konami. That was a nineteen ninety three
arcade game called Mystic Warriors Wrath of the Ninjas. And
I like to describe this as Sunset Riders but with
warriors and like Samurais and stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, it's like Sunset Riders meets Shnobi if that makes sense.
Remembers the Snoby arcade game.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, it does remind me of Shnoby. So yeah, just
like bothful and just to give you guys a background
story the plot, so it's set in the future of
New York City. So the World Trade Center can be
seen in some of the stages, so that gives you
like pre nine to eleven. Yeah, evil organization known as

the Skull Enterprise has taken over the nation and plots
of worldwide takeover. So as the player, you take control
one of five young Ninjas who are being targeted by
Skull forces. So the ninjas are Spirros, Chema, Kajiro, Brad,
and Yuri.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Right.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
So to set the tone nineteen ninety three, what do
we have with Konami? We had I think we had
the Simpsons.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
We had them, Yeah, Ninja Turtles, we had Ninja Turtles. Yeah,
I think that we did. We have a Mystic Uh,
I'm sorry, the one that we review lest One games.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, so that came out ninety three as well. So
I wanted to say, I'm gonna use the corny term.
It got lost in the sauce in my in my
mind because I've never seen this in ninety three, and
then when I play it, it is very reminiscent of
Sunset Riders. So let me ask you a question, do
you think with the arcade games that we talked about

now during that time period, if you've seen this game
where to Catch your eye. Would you would you lose
five dollars worth of quarters on it? Oh?

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Yeah, definitely, I would. Look, I would lose some money
because I mean this was a fun game. I really
enjoyed it. I actually finished the game, you know, I
bought it once getting Arcade archives, you know, we talk
about that, and I like the fact that they're putting
all these games out so even though you missed it,
you can kind of go back like, hey, where did
they come from?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
But yeah, and if the replay value for this.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Kind of game for me is really high, you know,
because I like, you know, I'm with those eighties and
nineties arcade games.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
That's my jams. Like, yeah, I would have definitely lost
some quarters on this.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
M So can you walk us through the game, like
the game, pay play and all that little background.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Well, one of the things I do notice is like
it's five characters you get to pick from, but well
you get to play with four characters or two depending
on the console unit of arcade. But you know, out
of all of those the characters that you pick, one
of them gets kidnapped. It could be well it could
it could just be a random one. If you're doing
like one player a two player, but that player gets

kidnapped and you have to walk through the game and
you have to try to avenge and get those guys
that person back, but also they will it does like
some they'll do some kind of sacrifice, so like you know,
they is somewhere up in a game, like they wind
up dying, so you have to like avenge.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Them and everything.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
But you know, if you start the game over, you
can actually pick that person that died and then like
another person, another character's gonna die.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
But all in all, it's pretty running gun.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
You know, you you run through the game like whichever
ninja you pick, and you do like little Ninja stars.
And also depending on what orb you pick up, you know,
you get power ups and like food. And what I
thought was a really cool thing because being Konami, they
often tend to advertise their games within a game. So
like during the first level you're running through, you wind

up running through a drive in theater and on that
theater screen they're advertising Sunset.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Riders and Sunset Riders. Yeah I like that. I like that. Yes,
I thought that was really cool advertising.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Fun fact about this game. Man in Japan, game Machines
listed Mystic Warriors on their April fifteenth, nineteen ninety three
issue as being the ninth most successful arcade unit of
the month. Yeah, so I just I don't know, man,
If you put it so okay, if you put it

(05:39):
side by side with Sunset Riders, who you going with,
who you're riding?

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Oh, that's hard, you know, because you gotta think we
didn't see this when we saw Sunset Riders.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Yeah, but this is still a fun game, you know.
I would probably bounce back and.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Forth between the two, you know, because it's basically the
same play style. This was futuristic where Sunset Riders is
a Western. Yeah, but they both have really good soundtracks also,
But I guess I guess I would live with Sunset
Riders because that's what I came with, what I grew

up with.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Well, it was a teenager, but this game.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
Saying, like to see it now, I feel like I
was still playing. You know, I'm not really biased to
all that, you know. I mean, I'm just gonna pick
it up and have fun.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah, And I think probably it was more successful in
Japan because it was more Japanese centric to where Sunset
Riders is the wild Wild West and American theme, and
that's that's where the popularity came because like with Metamorphosic
Metamorphic Force, right, it's like when you play these games now,

(06:54):
what thirty years after twenty thirty years after the fact,
it's like, wow, this is a great game. Why was
and it pushed because I don't, Like with Metamorphic Force,
I don't remember seeing this in the arcades. I don't
recollect but the game even now is age well. The
playability is good. I mean, it's exactly like Sunset Writers. However,
with what I like about this game is you have

a power meter to whereas the Sunset Writers, once you
got hit, it was a rap, you know what I'm saying.
So this gives you a chance because there's a lot
going on. Like Sunset Writers, there's a lot going on
within the game.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
So always yeah, even with a lot going on in
this game, you have like a little power meter, they
still get you, you know, because granted.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
The game is not it's not overly hard.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
It does have like a bit of a challenge, you know,
it's not it's not to the point that it was
overly frustrating, but you know, it's still gonna find ways to.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Knock you down.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
And I mean they come from all like all over
the place, even though snowballs, and yeah, it's gotta be
you gotta have.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
That finger fines so I used to say that in
the past.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
But you also can give a rapid fire it's like
the Sunset Riders with spreads across the screen, so that
gives you an upper advantage as well. But and you
can also like if they throw bombs, you could pick
them up and throw them back, you know.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
So it was it was pretty cool. But like you know,
if you hang on to that bomb too long, you'll
blow up.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Yeah, And I want to say that also like Sunset Riders,
it does a grading scale, like depending on like if
you take knock out like one hundred percent of the
characters or whoever does the most work, it's like greater
like any percentages.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
And I think that that's pretty cool as well.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, so what was your what was one of your
favorite stages on Sunset Riders.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Oh, I like.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
I think it was it was just like the third
maybe fourth stage, like where you're going through town and
you have then you have to go inside the bar
and you have to say the ladies, you know, they're
tied up. You have to fight these guys with these bombs. Yeah,
I thought that that was a pretty good stage. But
I mean that game was just iconic. I mean I

(09:08):
had the most fun playing that. But that's the stage
that sticks out to me the most. It's like when
you're going through that and then you fight the guy
with the iron horse, you kill a horse, and then
and then they threw the lady out of the bar,
and like you go to pick up and everything, and
he's like, don't murder man, real handling. You go in
and you have to fight the two guys and like
you have the chandelier that's jumped, that's swinging back and forth,

(09:29):
and you know, they're throwing bombs and fire, and like, yeah,
you have to boidos and then you have to save
the ladies at the same time. And when you defeat them,
the ladies did come out and they dance on the stage,
you know, and then you have to go fight the
other three or four of the stages.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
And I thought that was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
The ladies and you could sell Yeah, it makes sense
that you know what, man, I wanta I gotta see what.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Years Oh wait, I thought we're talking about Sunset Riders.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Stage, yeah, okay, no, the memorial stage on this game.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
I thought that the snowboarding stage is pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
I think it's like maybe to taking stage and like
you're going downhill and yeah, that was that was a
pretty cool one because.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
That reminded me of like teenage Munan Ninja Turtles and yeah,
so a dash to Sonic and then, like you said,
to the soundtrack. But Konami has never failed with soundtracks.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
No, Kanami was on the whole other level when they
were making these games, even on a Super Nintendo, even
like an earlier like Nintendo.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
I believe Contra was Konami. Yeah, but yeah, they've never.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
So I thought these came out out around the same time.
So since that Riders it's two years previous, okay, So
it looked like they took the form there and just
improved upon it and made it futuristic.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, it's very it's a very cookie cutter. You know.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
They pretty much like taking like the games and they've
kind of followed the same formula, just changed your characters
a little bit, and they tweaked one or two things
like for the instance, for instance, like just like Sunset Riders,
like at the end of the first stage, you have
to square off with the I guess he's the Marri
or whatever, and instead of going side by side, then
you have to shoot up, yeah, at the guy.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
And this this game does at the end of the
same at the end of the first stage as well.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah, yeah, because the gameplay is exactly the same. Like
I said, I could appreciate the life bar. Yes, I
always always felt with Sunset Riders, man, you're dodging these
bullets and at that just eight quarters left and right.
So when it came from home consoles, I appreciated the
fact that, like, hey, I can continue as many times

(11:46):
as I need to. Yeah, that game is a quarter eater.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, and Sunset Riders, if you think about it, it's
basically to me, kind of like a hint of Contra.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
Yeah. You know, you play well, you play with up
the four cowboys on that one.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
But just like Contra, you know, once you get hit
you're out the original contract and just like Sunset Robbers,
once you get hit you're out.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
But yeah, good games.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
So they were saying, like the improvement was the ability,
like you said, for foot players to change characters after
they lose a credit, and as well as a life
gauge that allows the players to sustain up to four
hits for many attacks before losing life. But you said,
so many things are coming at you. Man them four
hits can come like that.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
They're coming from left, right, side to side, up down,
you know.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
So it's like you're trying to keep up with your
character on the screen, but at the same time they're
throwing weapons that you as well.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
So but I mean at the same time, you do
have like a little bit of.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Leadway, so you know, it's best to try to find
like that that double that double Ninja star. So like
you you're shooting in two directions and you also get
the rapid fire and you make.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
That that one or that gives you a shield for
a little bit.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yeah, yeah, it's like a blue kind of like signing
the Hdgehog as well, you know, kind of gives you
a shield in may last about anywhere from seven to
ten seconds, So that's like your chance to kind of
try to get up and get.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Ahead and get make it to the end of the stage.
But it doesn't last long.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
No, it doesn't. And how would you rate the replayability
of this arcade classic.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
On scale of one to ten.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
Yeah, I would give it a good solid a good
solid eight, because that mean I was I will still
play this game, I would like just like Sunset Riders,
I still play Sunset Rodders.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
So yeah, I definitely give it a good eight.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
I'm trying to think too. I didn't because I know
what Metamorphic Force. That game was very very short.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Yeah, this game is short as well. There's no more
than about five or six stages.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
That's what I was trying to look up, like how
many stages they got?

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Yeah, but yeah they didn't. They don't only go too
long in these games like the Arcade.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, because you think about with the with the arcade games,
they aren't as in depth as like the console games
of today. Like right, I couldn't. I couldn't see myself
in the Arcade playing the Resident Evils.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
No, well, you know, not to take away from it.
In the Arcades, there is it's not Resident Evil, but
there was a do you remember a House of the Dead.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, oh yeah, I remember that, the shooting game.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
So that was like that was like a form of
Resident Evil, you know, it's just like in third person.
And there's also another one, oh the Walking Dead. You know,
I've played that arcade game as well, and so that
would be like if Resident Evil was an arcade game,
they'll probably look about like those two.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Yeah. So they're saying like nine stages and I forgot Yeah,
nine stages. It's saying, do you know what this game
reminded me of to another game that was hard as hell?
When you get hit one time, you're done.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Yeah, element in it.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
Yeah, yeah, I was telling you it's just like Shno
because I remember remember on Shnoby you can use like
the Ninja magic as well. Yeah yeah, and like he
would like kind of dash all over the screen, depend
on which one you use. Well, if this one, like
you pick up the orb and it kind of has
like the Shnoby essence because he tries, he kind of
stops and he does the kiss kata and then like

(15:30):
all of a sudden you'll have like whatever power up
that came with it.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, So on the scale of one to ten, what
would you give Mystic Warriors.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
A good eight strong?

Speaker 2 (15:44):
Eight strong? Eight? Yea, I give it, yeah, I give it.
I give it a seven point five.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Yeah it's still a good score.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Yeah, it's still a good store. It's just one of
those things that, you know, I try to envision the
arcade games of ninety three me walking an arcade game.
Had I seen this game, would I play it? I
think I would, Yeah, it would. It would get some
gameplay because yeah, I mean we got to remember, man,
there were some heavy hitters back then.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
And you also got to keep in mind in the
arcades in the nineties, if everybody was circled around play
Street fright of Immortal Kombat, and you couldn't get to
it right away, you just kind of walked around and
you're like, Okay, look at this game.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Looks cool as well, you know.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
And that's also how I discovered games, you know, because
I mean everybody would everybody would be like huddled around
at one game, watching these other people go at.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
It and like doing so well. So it's like, okay,
it's like, hey, look at this game over here, you know.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
And also, you know, you got to keep your mind
back then, like if you're with your parents, you don't
have so much time, so it's like you wanted to
kind of get in there and just have a little fun.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yeah, you know, unless you're drivel to them all like
we were by that time.
