Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hmmmm.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
So what up?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
What up?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
What up? Good morning, good evening, good afternoon. Wherever you
are in the world. Forty something Gamers Podcast, It's me
and my boys, Sharon. We've been friends since high school
with forty something and we love talking video games. Sharon,
how's it going, man.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Hanging out?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
No doubt, no doubt, no doubt. So I guess we
go on ahead and get into it. So this segment,
we're gonna talk about our favorite video games, and we're
gonna talk about it per genre. So uh, I guess
the first question I want to ask, man, because you know,
there's so many different errors in this video game situation.

(00:59):
So I want to ask you, Sharon, so, what's your
favorite video game era?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Starting it off, ooh, I think that I loved the
sixteen bit era. Well, yeah, sixteen bit man, that's hard
because I mean there was a lot of sixteen big
games that I really did like to play. You know,
that was just an arcade era. And yeah, let's let's
just say sixteen bit right now.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Okay, okay, And I'll go ahead and say the sixteen
bit era as well, and you and you bring up
a good point because I don't know, man, Well, shit,
I'm forty years old, damn curse. But I'm forty years
old and I ain't out and I ain't out there
like that no more. But I think because the sixteen
bit Era we were, we were out in ourcades. Man
arkides were big, dang, And I'm thinking, I don't know

(01:48):
if arcades are as big as they used to be,
because now, I mean, with the game stores, you can
play online and basically have your own online arcade.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Right, I think I want to say, I think that
it's probably because of the time that we were teenagers
and it was probably like maybe our innovative time period period.
But you also realized that the PlayStation came out at
the time frame as well, and like in the mid nineties,
and that was phenomenal for what it was. You know,
I really did enjoy the PlayStation era, but I love

(02:19):
the sixteen bit era too.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, I'm gonna say the sixteen bit era because Nintendo
had a lock on the games for like a while,
and it just never quite lived up to the darcades.
And then when the sixteen bit Era came, it was like,
oh my goodness, like, yo, this is very close to
the arcades. We can actually say that we have the

(02:41):
arcade in the home, and what's your what's your favorite console?

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Oh? God, man, you know what favorite console? Ouch? Damn man,
that's oh. I mean I enjoyed the Genesis. I enjoyed
the Super Nintendo. You know, God, you.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
That's hard.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
That's hard because I'm so I'm across so many platforms,
you know. Yeah, yeah, man, I can tell you my
least favorite.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Maybe what's that?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Maybe the Virtual Boy?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Oh yeah, the Virtual Boy with that red screen and
all that.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, I don't do well with red. Let's see, you
know what, Let's let's just say Super Nintendo. You know,
because I had a lot, I had a lot of
fun playing games like Castlevania and Turtles and Time, Super
Doble Dragon, Mario World, oh.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
You know, just great games like that.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, I mean, Mario World was a whole new different level. Man.
That still this day it aged.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Well, yeah, that game will never go out of style,
you know. And that's been that's been over thirty years
ago since that came out.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah. Yeah, it was ninety one.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Ninety in Japan. Yeah, you're right, you're right, So that
was thirty five years ago now.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
This year, good lord, yeah, yeah, I know.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Man, that that came out closer to the time.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Versus right now if you stop and think about the logic,
because we were only like twelve thirteen when that came
out in Japan. But yeah, man, that was, uh, that's sick.
That Superintendo was. That was that was a beast. I
had a lot of fun for me and my friends
playing that, you know. And I remember like I would
go to your house and we'd also, well, you came

(04:42):
to my house.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
And we played at sixteen, like the Super Nintendo.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because I think I think I had it.
Well it was basically, but I remember when I joined
the Navy, man, I gave some of my stuff to
some of my some of my cousins. I think, yeah,
I kept my Genesis, but I eve away my Super Nintendo.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, I remember you had oh what do you call
that thing, the Rob Robot?

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Oh, the rob with the Nintendo. Yeah, Rob giro Might.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, I've never played with one of those. I've seen it,
but I never played with it.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Was uh yeah it was. It came with giro Might
and uh yeah it was. Yeah, it was remember before
a few seconds and then yeah, it kind of came
and went but I will say my favorite console. I'm
gonna just say nine nine ninety nine, twelve o'clock am.

(05:37):
I was there to get my Dreamcast, and I got
my Dreamcast. I was blown matter of fact. I had
it on like like lay away. I was paying for
it until nine nine ninety nine came and I was
like Sonic Adventure. I was blown away, Like yeah, it
was on a whole other level, like ready to rumble? Yeah, Thunder?

(06:00):
What was it? Dang the boat game? Hydro Thunder?

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:08):
So I will, yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Change, but I want to. I want to change about
the Dreamcast. And I got to sit right here.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
The Dreamcast was everything, man like even to this day,
like still to this day, any listeners, I'm I'm looking
for the skies of Arcadia, right, So yeah, the Dreamcast.
I did that. Yeah. And then the cool thing to remember,
uh the demo disc that you would get as well, man.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
That I remember that I had.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I had a subscription to the Saga Dreamcast magazine and
they would send me one every month, and every month
it would have a different demonstration disc in it. And
I still haven't wow, ye I lost the magazines is
a hurricane Katrina. But I still have the disc.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Mhmm, yeah, yeah, and then so we'll all right, we'll
jump into it. Then favorite overall video game right now,
and then we'll jump into the sub genres.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Okay, my favorite overall video game.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Heang, Oh, let's see my favorite overall video game.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Let's just say I does it have to be like
limited to a game?

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Oh, I guess the favorite games video and it could
be like Arcade.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Oh I love yeah, yeah, Mario, Super Mario Brothers, Double Dragon.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
I have a lot of favorites.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
You know.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
I signed the Hitchhole that that that was that that
is my boy man oh Neil g y O PlayStation.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Man, it's a.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Lot Disney Games, know, Mickey Maydia, you know, Quackshot.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yeah, I think I'll say from my favorite overall man,
I'm gonna go ahead and say old school, back to
the sixteen bid man, I'm gonna go ahead and say
after Burner Man, because still to this day, man, it's
a easy shooter up and it's just like man way
ahead of his time and it's still still golden. Still
good to go.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
That's your jam. I mean, yeah, you talk about that
one a lot.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
So then we'll go We'll go now, to sub genres man.
I don't know, we never really talked r PG, but yeah,
I'll go ahead and say Final Fantasy seven it's still
my jam man like that. I think that helped push
the the PlayStation over the Sega Saturn.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
And now this is really gonna blow your mind because
I've never actually played through Final Fantasy seven. Had a
friend of mine, you know, Desmond Barry. He used to
play Final Fantasy all the time and I would kind
of watch him play it. But if I had to
choose the something like that, let's just go with for me,
Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Harts was cool and it mixed Final

(09:13):
Fantasy with Disney and they did a really good job
at it, especially with the second game. You know, I
still remember remember playing that game and it was it was,
it was phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Mmm. Yeah, they got it. They got another one. Man,
let me look this up. There was a Sega there's
another Sega game that I used to play quite often.
Uh huh, let me, I'm gonna try to find this
right now.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
What happened to him?

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Huh?

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Like? What kind of game was it?

Speaker 2 (09:44):
It was an RPG. It was kind of cartoony, I know,
it was for the Saga Dreamcast. It's kind of cartoony,
and it was like a fun, fun game to play.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Man, Oh kind of cartoon.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Let's see. Oh, Evolution, that's what it was.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Okay, I never played that.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, so Evolution is pretty good, and I know they
had an Evolution Part two, but I've never got to
never got to play.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
It, okay.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah, and then I always wanted to play Fine fantasy
Star Online. Shout out to Sea, shout out to Sega Man,
because they were the first ones that really pushed online
with the Sega Saturn, and I never.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Got to play it, right right, No, I remember a
fantasy Star too on Sega Genesis, but I never really
got into it too much. Now, the fantasy Star Online
did look pretty cool though.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
But I mean it was one and I never got
to play either.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Mmm. So what do you think about as far as
action games?

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Man, action games? Let's see, dang, shoot, I would.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Action games. Let's see. I'm come back to me on
that one.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Okay, I'm trying to think. Let's see what action I
want to say, Golden Acts Man and then Revenge of
Death Adder.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Okay, yeah, all right, so m action games Final Fight,
but that's yeah, Okay, I'm gonna say like.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Streets of Rage.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Okay, okay, Rage specifically Gunstar Heroes is a cool game too.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
I don't know if you've ever played that. And oh,
Rocket Knight Adventures.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Oh yeah, Rocket Night Yeah, Rocket Knight Adventures. Yeah. So
you notice we were heavy into the sixteen bit era.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
And don't forget it. Don't forget about earth Worm Gym.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Oh yeah, earth Worm Gym was on that. Earth Worm
Gym was on it. I'm curious to see what since
the Dreamcast was my favorite joint, Let's see what. Let
me research because I might be forgetting an action game
on the Dreamcast. Yeah, I ever played that. Man, it
looks it looks pretty good. I've never played that game before.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
I rented it once. Oh and I messed around with it.
It was it was. It was pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Actually, oh man, Drinkcass had some uh, some some good
action games.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
I don't know if Resident Evil it's the action for Horror.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Yeah, so they got they got your code named Veronica.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, I remember that.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
I think that's actually I don't quote on it, but
I think that they're going to be doing a remake
on that because Resident Evil they've been going back and
re up in the games for the New Assistance.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Mm hmm dag.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, so there we go with that. Yeah, sh was
on my list. Man, I'm not to have to get
up on that when I have to probably contact Bill
Tindo because now, yeah, those two of those games. So
then we have action, we have adventure, fight, story, storytelling, exploration,

(13:03):
puzzle solving. And there's another one, is it Red Redemption.
I'm gonna go red Yeah, go with that. Man, that's
a dope game on a on a PlayStation.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
Okay, so I never got to actually play Red Day Redemption.
Let's see. I'm gonna go with g T A five on.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
The Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
G T A five. I had a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
I forgot about Great Theft for Grand Theft Otto, because man,
what do you think of have you seen? Uh, you've
seen for six? Men, you've seen the previews and the
graphics for.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Six, Yeah, like briefly, but I mean, man, that game
has been coming for ever.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Yeah, so what was it supposed to drop?

Speaker 2 (13:52):
That's a good question, man. They keep they keep pushing
it back. Yeah, but it looks, uh, it looks amazing, man.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
And yeah, but you know it's gonna be next gen.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
So if you got the PS four Nintendo Switch like
I got, yeah, I don't think it's gonna work.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
You have to get a five for PC.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
So have you, uh you played any puzzle games?

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Well, you know, Zelda's always been kind of like a puzzle,
you know, some of it's it's more like action adventure puzzle.
But as far as a puzzle game, Oh, street fighter puzzle,
what's fun?

Speaker 1 (14:36):
I don't know if that.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Was.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
That's a pretty cool one.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I'm gonna go with. I'm gonna go generic on this one. Tetris. Yeah,
I'm gonna go generic on that.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
I'm not really heavily into the the puzzle games, right,
so let's we're gonna go into fighting. Now, what's your
favorite fighting.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Street Street far? The two? Okay, okay, it's fos to
r KDE right now, Yeah, I can.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
I can also say Double Dragon too, which was I
play that one heavily still to this day.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
And that game came out back in nineteen eighty eight.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Yeah, so I'm gonna thank you.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
The first game I learned, The Dragon was the first
fighting game I learned how to play.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
Yeah, I'm gonna go with a virtual virtual fighter. Yeah,
the Teching Teching was dope, yep, and then like, oh,
Shamurai Showdown, Yeah, Samurai Showdown too, that's for me. Samurai
Showdown was definitely. I mean there's so many great fighters
on within this genre. Yeah, man, like, there's so many

(15:50):
to mention, man, especially, and we talked about it before
with Neo Jill a lot on the Neo Geo play.
Oh and then I'm forgetting. The Killer Instinct too was
pretty good. A lot of a lot of good a
lot of good fighting games.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Yeah. Man, Hey, you know what neither one of us
mentioned Moonwalker?

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Oh yeah, Moonwalker. Oh yeah, we haven't mentioned that at all. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
I didn't know what that would even fall under. I
guess maybe an action Yeah, I mean when we have
Moonwalker ArKade, Moonwalker Genesis.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
I've never played the Massive System version of it, but yeah, man,
damn man.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yeah, we totally forgot. Okay, what other generous we got?

Speaker 1 (16:34):
I mean there's so many Yeah, a shooter.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Oh yeah, man? Yeah, what about yeah? What about shooters?

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Man contrac three for Super Nintendo And I did say
guns Starring Rules, but that's also a shooter.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Oh man, sure.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Oh do you have any first person shooters that you.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
M h, I think that see granted is horror resident
evil can be kind. No, that's the third person never
mind first person shooter. Okay, House of the Dead.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
Oh yeah, and then what was the what was the
one on the saturn.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Yep oh oh, and it was this other one that
was called Silence Scope also, which is really cool m hm,
when you had to like you know, in the arcade
there was like a rifle and you had to aim
to the people on the roof for wherever they were,
and like a time limit.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
But yeah, yeah, House of the Dead definitely Man and
again speaking to the dream, that.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Was Man that was with the green blood instead of
the head.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
But I find the first person shooters Man when the
newer games was just like Man.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Yeah, so now it was will be like the Call
of Duties Yeah yeah, but you know what I'm gonna
say that they kind of do it in there.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Out of all of those, Black Ops was my favorite.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Black Ops.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Yeah, that was the first Call of Duty game that
I'd actually played, because there was a couple of them
were out at that time.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
There was one that's called World at War.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
You know, it's a really good story, you know, but
Black I mean Black Ops is a great story too,
and it had the voice of ice Cube and some
other people in it. And I know it revolved around Vietnam.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
M what about platforms?

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Platforms?

Speaker 3 (18:41):
Mmm?

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Consider So let me just go so a sub genre
action games where the player controls a character to navigate
through two dimensional or three dimensional environments.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Okay, would it be like Zelda?

Speaker 2 (18:55):
I was thinking like teenage Mutant, Ninja, Turtle Strider.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
Oh okay, man, but Turtles and Time was Turtles and
Time was was great.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
I'm gonna go ahead and say, oh, man, what's the
Strider that was on the place? Not Strider was a
straighter to Strader on the PlayStation? Let me see, I'm
gonna go ahead with Strider too because it had like
it had okay, yes, straighter too, because it was like,
what do you say? Two point five d Okay?

Speaker 3 (19:26):
I never played I know they had the Strider straighter to.
I knew about the first Yeah, okay. I played the
arcade version of Strider, and man, I struggled with that game.
I finished it, but it was I mean, the weird
the movements were weird for me, but I mean it
was it was. It was a solid game. You know
what else was another good one was Space Harrier.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
Oh, yes, Space Area. Yeah, I'm the Arcade, but the
Sega Genesis version.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
Was Yeah, I know, but I have the arcade version
of Okay, if I get Look, when if I get
these games, I try to go for the more superior
version of it, which is normally going to be the
arcade you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because the Sega you know,
it didn't have that processor, so I mean they had

(20:12):
to scale it back a bit.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
But I mean they get kudos to try and not
his game. You know, talking about Strider, it came out
on an on Nintendo years ago and it was a
game called street Fighter twenty ten.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Did you ever play that?

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Oh yeah, were you kind of flipping like in his
metal suit?

Speaker 1 (20:29):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (20:30):
It was almost kind of like an eight bit version
of Strider to me.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, because like, don't you like Portal Through? Different? Yeah?
I remember it, Yeah, I differently because it was Capcom
and it was for Nintendo.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Yeah, it was him tell Capcom put out some good
games back then.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
I mean Capcom always put out good games.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
But you know, and I remember that was that came
out about the time that Street Fighter too came to
the arcades. Yeah, so they it was like in front
of like street it was called street Fighter twenty ten,
you know, and like, okay, so it was like you
were playing Strider. I didn't played that in a long time,
but yeah, I may have to go back and revisit

(21:12):
that one again.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
Yeah. Man, So then you mentioned one to a survival horror.
We already know what that was.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
Gonna be Resident easily.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
Easily, yeah, you know, and realistically all of them are great,
but man, something about Resident equal four, because you know,
the first one was scary, and then you had the
second and third one, which I didn't play the third
one on the PlayStation. I actually just recently, just a
few sure years ago, played the third one.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
There was a remaxer or whatever. But Resident, you were four.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
You know, they put you out in that countryside like
you were in Romania or something like that, and they
were chasing you around with pitchforks and just like weapons
and just weird things like that. I believe that you
were looking like you were looking for the President's daughter.
And that was a creepy game. And on top of that,

(22:11):
they put it on the Nintendo GameCube first.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
So you know, I got I actually still have that one.
That was a really good one.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah, and what do you think about multiplayer? Oh? Man,
we can go. I just thought about a few multiplayers.

Speaker 3 (22:27):
Favorite multiplayer Oh okay, well, Turns and Time is a
good multiplayer.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
I was taking an X Men definitely.

Speaker 1 (22:40):
Yeah, x Men, the Simpsons, yep.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Yeah, it seemed like it seemed like Capcom and Konami
had that on lock.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
Yeah, they had a blueprint from making those those style games,
you know, at that time frame. You know, I will
tell you another good multiplayer game that's out right now.
I'm the name two of them, and that's going to
be used to Rage four and teenage Mutant Nations. Mutant
May Him. No, that that's the movie I'm sorry, Shutters Revenge.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Yes, stout to Shredder's Revenge. Yeah, it was recently came out.
Yeah because what yeah, now this is for this is.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
For the movies out there.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
He has another really great multiplayer multiplayer game that's out.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
It's called Minecraft Dungeons.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
It's been out for a little while, but that is
a pretty pretty solid game as well. I'm not I'm
not the biggest Minecraft player, but I do like Gauntlet
style arcade games, and that's.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
What that he is yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
So, m I was gonna say, don't think out a
gauntlet for the expert. I know there was a recent
gablet that came out.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
I maybe something like Gamlet Legends or something.

Speaker 2 (23:50):
Like that, that's what it was. Yep.

Speaker 3 (23:52):
Yeah, Well basically what they've done with Minecraft is it's
a Gone style but you're playing with the Minecraft characters and.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
I mean you just go ahead it you and about
three other people.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
And I've actually played an Arcade version also that does
the same thing similar and every time you like, they
spit out these little players chords too, and you get
to scan the cord and the character gets like different

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
