Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are not at the mercy of your moods. You
are the architect of your emotional experience, and that is
the thought for today. Welcome to Seven Good Minutes. I'm
Clyde Lee Dennis. Thanks for joining me for what I

(00:21):
believe will be seven of the most enriching minutes of
your day. In today's episode of Seven Good Minutes, we
talk about your mood being a choice, not a circumstance. Enjoy.
There's a powerful truth that can transform your entire day,
and it's this. Your mood is far more within your
control than you might think. While we often treat our

(00:42):
emotional state like weather, something that happens to us, the
reality is that mood is much more like a muscle
that can be strengthened and directed with practice. By the
end of this episode, you'll understand how your mood is
influenced by your choices rather than just your circumstances, and
you'll have practical tools to consciously shift your emotional state

(01:03):
when you need to. We've all had those mornings where
we wake up feeling off and we tell ourselves, I'm
just in a bad mood. Today, we carry that story
with us, letting it color every interaction and experience. But
what if that's not the whole truth. What if your
mood is less about what happened to you and more
about how you're choosing to respond to what happened. This

(01:25):
doesn't mean you should ignore difficult emotions or pretend everything
is fine when it's not. It means recognizing that you
have more agency over your emotional experience than you might realize.
Your mood isn't just something that happens to you, it's
something you participate in creating. Think about two people stuck
in the same traffic jam. One person sits there fuming,

(01:46):
letting frustration build with each passing minute. The other person
takes a deep breath, puts on music they enjoy, and
uses the time to practice gratitude or simply be present.
Same situation, completely different moods. The difference isn't the traffic
it's the choice each person made about how to respond.

(02:07):
Your mood is influenced by many factors. Your thoughts, your
physical state, your environment, your focus, and, yes, your circumstances.
But here's what's interesting. Most of these factors are more
within your control than you might think. You can't always
control what happens, but you can influence how you process

(02:28):
and respond to what happens. Consider your thoughts. Your mind
is constantly creating stories about your experiences, and these stories
directly impact your mood. If you wake up thinking this
is going to be a terrible day, you're setting yourself
up for that experience. But if you wake up thinking,
I wonder what good things might happen today, you're creating

(02:51):
space for a different kind of experience. Your physical state
also plays a huge role in your mood. When you're tired, hungry,
or physically on comfortable, everything feels harder. But these are
often things you can address. Getting enough sleep, eating nourishing food,
moving your body, and taking care of your basic needs
aren't just good for your health their mood management tools.

(03:15):
Your environment matters too. The spaces you spend time in
the media, you consume, the conversations you engage in. All
of these influence your emotional state. You might not be
able to control everything in your environment, but you can
make conscious choices about what you expose yourself to. Perhaps
most importantly, your focus shapes your mood. What you pay

(03:37):
attention to grows in your experience. If you focus on
what's wrong, missing, or frustrating those things will dominate your
emotional landscape. If you consciously direct your attention to what's working,
what you're grateful for, or what brings you joy, those
experiences expand. This doesn't mean forcing positivesivity, or denying real challenges.

(04:02):
It means being intentional about where you place your mental energy.
You can acknowledge difficulties while still choosing to focus on possibilities.
You can feel disappointed about one thing while simultaneously appreciating
something else. Sometimes shifting your mood is as simple as
changing your posture. Try this. Slump your shoulders, look down

(04:23):
and breathe shallowly. Notice how that feels. Now stand tall,
lift your chest and take a deep breath. Your body
and your emotions are connected, and you can use this
connection consciously. Other times, mood shifts require more intentional practices.
Maybe it's taking a few minutes to write down what

(04:43):
you're grateful for. Maybe it's listening to music that lifts
your spirits. Maybe it's calling someone who makes you laugh
or taking a walk in nature. The key is recognizing
that you have options. When you notice your mood heading
in a direction you don't want, you can pause and
ask yoursel what choice can I make right now that
might shift this. Sometimes the answer is to honor the

(05:06):
difficult emotion and let it move through you. Sometimes it's
to actively redirect your attention or energy. Your mood isn't
just about how you feel. It affects how you show
up in the world. When you take responsibility for your
emotional state, you're not just improving your own experience. You're
contributing to the emotional atmosphere around you. Your mood is contagious,

(05:29):
and when you choose to cultivate positive emotional states, you're
offering that gift to everyone you encounter. Remember this is
a practice, not a perfection. Some days will be easier
than others, some moods will be more stubborn than others.
But every time you consciously choose to work with your
emotional state rather than just accepting it as fixed, you're

(05:51):
building your capacity for emotional resilience and well being. Your
mood is not your master, it's your partner, and like
any good partnership, it works best when you're actively engaged
rather than just along for the ride that does it.

moment to rate and review the show on the platform
you're listening on. Until next time, let's be civil to

(06:15):
one another out there. Thanks for listening.
