L'attentato, passato alla storia come la Congiura delle polveri, fu sventato da una misteriosa lettera anonima, il che non ha impedito al suo fautore Guy Fawkes di entrare nell'immaginario popolare, quale simbolo stesso della lotta contro il sistema, facendo di lui il protagonista di filastrocche per bambini e il modello per la celebre maschera del fumetto, poi diventato film, V per Vendetta.
