Il primo incontro tra Maximilien-François-Marie-Isidore de Robespierre e Luigi XVI avviene nell'autunno del 1774. Luigi ha 20 anni, ed è appena stato incoronato Re: Robespierre, invece, di anni ne ha 16, e studia al collegio Louis-le-Grand di Parigi. Ed è proprio a lui che, ironia della storia, viene affidato, quel giorno, il discorso di benvenuto al Re, in visita alla scuola. I loro sguardi si incrociano a più riprese, ma nessuno dei due può in quel momento immaginare che le loro strade si sarebbero reincontrate, 20 anni dopo, ai piedi di un patibolo.
