Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, welcome back. We are back at ACF four one.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
One the podcast. Here at the podcast parlor. This used
to be a milking parlor. We turned it into a
podcast parlor. Although we're being watched right here. I understand
the Laney knows everything about the cattle, so we may
have her explain, you know, everything that there is a cattle.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Might be coming up pretty cool, that'd be neat.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
So we're at the iHeart Podcast Parlor powered by Nutrient.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
We also want to thank a couple of people.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
We want to thank Spencer's sugar shopping buck in over
there at Herrod. They brought us like two plates of
cookies and anything we.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Don't eat we have to give the chad use in
the next episode. So eating a lot of those cookies
we'll do.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
We'll do, all right, And of course we also want
to always thank Alex Wilfoer, engineer who makes us sound
good despite the talent that's sitting at the table. Episode
so we are being visited by royalty in the parlor.
We have Her Majesty the Queen and His Majesty the King.
Do you have to call each other like her Majesty.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
His Majesty thankfully.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Not.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeah, no, no, So.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
You guys are pretty casual about these.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, about these royal first name basis for the most part.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Really first name basis with the queen.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Oh yeah, pretty impressive.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
That's pretty cool. Do you have any nicknames for the Queen?
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Not? Yeah, but I guarantee you by the end of
the week, we'll get there.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Now, do you have a nickname for the King? No?
I think you could say public. No, okay, all right,
well just I thought i'd ask you th that right
out there right at the beginning. So first off, so
we have the King and the Queen, So what the
heck does that mean? What's it mean to be the
Queen of the Allen County Fair.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
So basically, I'm the Queen of the Junior Fair, so
I am basically look over all the shows and visit
with the fair goers and people that are attending the
different shows and showing in those shows.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Okay, And what does it mean to be the King
County Fair?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
The way that I mainly look at it is setting
a proud example for all the younger kids that look
up to us and that want to be more like
us in the future, and just kind of you know,
set an example, show them what you should do, what
you shouldn't do. Hopefully we're not the one showing them
what you shouldn't do though.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
So, so I noticed you both have sashes. The Queen's
got a where's your crown?
Speaker 1 (02:20):
King? You don't get one?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
I got a hat? But we go to and from I'll.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Tell you I can run by Burger King. We can
get you set up.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Honestly, that'd be great. I wouldn't I wouldn't be upset
about that one because I.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Think that stinks. You should get a crown, right, you're
the king.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, should be a little bigger too.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
He's really upset about it.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
He was talking about it, dude.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
So like people do they have to cursey if they're
a girl to have a cursey when they see you
and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I've got a couple, yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
But be nice io D Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
YEAHD depends on depends on the basis, all right, Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
So delayey if I understand, and if I'm wrong, it's
totally kelly.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Couple's fun. So I understand that.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
So you have a couple of projects at the fair
Cattle and Swine, right, Okay, So my first question is, so,
does this mean that you liked bacon wrapped filet is
like one of your favorite meals?
Speaker 4 (03:15):
I mean it's up there, probably ten out of ten, ten.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Out of ten. Okay, so that that does sound good.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, so you heard that the Queen's buying steak when
this is over, Alex, Okay, I got that. So tell
me about your projects. Which is your favorite? Do you
prefer the cow over the or the cattle over the
pig or.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, cattle is definitely my favorite. I go all around
the country sharing cattle. It's just one of my favorite
ways to pass my time. I spend all my free
time on the barn or at the first show.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
So, so which one's easier to so?
Speaker 2 (03:44):
I know you spend a lot of time with them
because you're getting ready to show. It's not which one
learns faster, the cow or the or the pig.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Definitely the cow.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Pigs are not very smart at all, not very smart.
Now you're a cattle guy too, are you? Are you
a swine guy? Yeah? You so? Do you think you're big? Stupid? On?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
On?
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Sometimes I will say they have their moments, but other
times they will shock you. We've had plenty of escape
artists in the barn.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Really, So then they're not that stupid if they can escape, right.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Hey, people do say they're one of the smartest animals.
I don't believe it. Sometimes you disagree.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
So you're thinking the cattle is the smartest of the animal.
So is this the smartest animal of all of them?
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Because we have rabbits and chickens and goats.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
I think so that was a pretty smart So you
talk to your count No, I wish I could.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
I want to know what they're thinking sometimes, does it
you have a name for your county.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
His name's Tango Tango?
Speaker 1 (04:42):
So how did Tango get his name?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
It was my last year, so it's like the last dance,
like tango.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Oh, last dance, I got it? Yeah, all right, and
then then we'll run by the QP. It's not the Tango,
I get it. That's pretty cool. So so you've been
all you're all about Tango and I'm feeling bad.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Does the pig have a name?
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:10):
My pigs names are Jesse like Jesse Owens and Joey
like Joey Chestnut.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Okay, do you do you talk to the pigs? No,
because they're stupid.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah, they like to bite me.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
So usually I'm just like yelling at them.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Well maybe they're jealous of that all the attention you
give to tango.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Probably, but you don't't ever see tango.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Oh you keep them like segregated secure bio secure bio secure.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Is that a thing?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Now you've got to make sure like your cow doesn't
catch swine flu.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Yeah, I guess I don't know.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
All right. That brings us to Brody.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Brody, you've got two projects too, right, So you've got
you've got pigs, right, and then.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
What's your second project?
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Take rabbits?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Rabbits? What kind of rabbits?
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Flemish giants. We used to take Champagne de argents, which
are kind of rare in this state for the most part.
And then we also take white New Zealand's as well
as we are going to start taking Florida whites.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Cool. So when do they judge rabbits?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
They are judgings go on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, all.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Right, so you won't know till almost right before the
auction you did pretty much.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
So do do rabbits taste like chicken? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I will forever say that is true because I can
speak from experience.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Do your rabbits have names, Well, a couple of them do.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
It depends on the ones that we show more often do.
But the ones that are kind of just there for
our breeding stock, we don't name.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
No, we have.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
A lot of them have been like family related names.
But then at the same time we've also had like Basil,
like the plant.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, okay, so they become like a little herb to.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
You pretty much.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
You could call them herb. We could. Yeah, I like it.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I might have to think about that one.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Tell me about your pick. Tell me about your hog.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah, I've been Hogs are where I've always put my
heart and soul into ever since starting them when I
was I believe ten, I started show, actually started showing
sheep when I first got into four h when I
was in clover Buds. Did that for about four years
and then picked up hogs, and it's just been straightforward
(07:42):
ever since. I've always loved them.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
So how many years have you been showing now? Twelve? Twelve?
Speaker 2 (07:48):
So is that is that more than Troy el were showed? Probably,
and you probably have more awards than Troy.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Probably. I don't know if I can live up to
that hype.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Okay, check it.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
So let's talk a little bit about because I'm gonna
ask you guys.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
To do this next Friday morning. Get the wig Rotto enroll.
You guys know you got to be there, right, Yeah,
it's one of those duties that you have to fulfill
as King and Queen. You got to show up at
that stuff. You you're so cool.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
You've got fans on the other side of the window. Wow,
that's incredible.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
She's just she's just playing catch up. She's put us
through a lot.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
I won't even point out.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
As an English major, I won't even point out that
she misspelled yours.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
There should have been apostrophe, and.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
They no, there is an apostrophe, yep, yep. But it
kind of looks like your go cool, yeah whatever.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
So yeah, don't pay attention to the audience. If they're important,
they'd be on this side.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
So especially with that one.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, so I want to talk about let's talk about
the livestock auction, because I think people get confused and
they're like, I don't really want to go to the
livestock auction because if I won.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
And I bought a cow or you know, rabbit, it's like,
what am I gonna do?
Speaker 2 (08:58):
With it, So what are they on when they come
to the livestock sale Thursday and Friday.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
So essentially, when you come to the livestock sale on
Thursday and Friday, you're bidding on the kid. You're sponsoring them.
So every payment that you have will go to the child.
You're not really buying the animal. The animal will still
go to the packer like it normally would.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Okay, So if you end up you're bidding on you're
bidding on Brodie's rabbit and you end up getting it
for let's let's you're you're getting it for three hundred bucks.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
That would hurt.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
That hurts a little bit. Ro So I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Don't cry, don't cry man.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
So okay, so you get it for thirteen hundred bucks
and is that better?
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Yeah, I'll take that all right. So that means that
means you're buying a rabbits issue.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Right, I'm a cookie.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
So so, so somebody buys your rabbit, you you're still
going to have the rabbit, but the money is going
to you to basically help pay for the cost that
you've had over the last year to do your project right.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Because there's actually our rabbits still go to the packager,
you do, ye, except our breeding stock will not go
through the sale, will actually just take them home.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
So but with like the cattle and the hogs and stuff,
it's now they could purchase it, correct, and they just
paid market value for the weight of that animal, right,
So tell me.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
So I'm a big I'm a big supporter of Junior
Fair as you guys know. You can say that, yeah,
I could say that.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
So how much work is just take one of your projects,
whether it's the cattle or it's the swine. How much
time do you put into your project delaying You've got
two big projects, how much time do you spend on them?
Speaker 4 (10:46):
So with the cattle, will actually purchase those either like
through September octobers of the year before, and we will
work them all the way to the fairs. So that's
a good like ten months of working that animal. And
it's about three hours every day depending on the time
of year. So a lot of time goes into that one.
And for swine, it's usually we get them around March
(11:09):
ish and will work those to the fair.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
And you get your cattle from Jones show.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Cattle some of them I do, yes, I didn't want
to put you on a spot, hi, Ramdy, but just kidding,
all right, Brody, how much time do you spend on
your projects With the hogs?
Speaker 3 (11:26):
We actually raise our own, so we have them just
twenty four to seven and we well, we get to
the actual like prepping for fair part. I work with
my hogs for about two times a day at about
an hour or an hour and a half per like routine.
(11:48):
And then for come rabbits, it's it's less about working
them more about upkeep. With rabbits, we just mainly want them,
in our standpoint, to look nice, be clean, maintain their
fur for when they're moultain, and just kind of keep
them looking pristine.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
So your rabbits get pretty yucky. Oh yeah, well describe
that to me. How do they get you?
Speaker 3 (12:10):
So, actually, they will stain themselves, especially because we have
white rabbits, to the point where their white fur will
become either brown or yellow.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Cool. It's like changing breeds.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Well, and then we try to get them to change
back because that's not what they want.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Okay, ye, So there's a lot of time.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
I mean, I think people that if they're not raised
in a farm community or they don't have a project
in FFA or four h.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
They don't understand that.
Speaker 5 (12:41):
You know every day, you know that animal has to
be fed, that animal has to be taken care of,
and then especially when you start putting hours in to
get it ready to show, because you don't just walk
into that ring the first time and hope, hope the
cattle follows you. Right, Yeah, So what's the most embarrassing
thing You're both have been showing for a long time.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
And I'll start with Delaney because she's already losing it.
What's the most embarrassing thing ever happened to you in
the ring on judging day?
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Okay, so this wasn't at the County Fair, but it
was another show that I went to last year. I
had this year name Ernie, and I took him into
the ring and we were just doing everything like normal,
and I turned around and went to go to set
him up, and all of a sudden, he started running
backwards and then he did a turn and I went
flying across the ring to a summersault and threw my
(13:29):
showstick almost into the stands. So that was a little
bit embarrassing.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
And how did that score? Oh? Ten out of ten?
Speaker 3 (13:38):
The judge told me so.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Great landing like they do with the elymics. Yeah, very cool. Brody,
your most embarrassing moment.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
In a judging ring for starting, I can't compete with
that one.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
You've never done a summer song?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
No, not that close. Yeah there, I would have to
say that.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
My big thing.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
It was actually before I got into the show shoe
arena when my hog decided to take off on me,
go between my legs, pick it snout up and actually
throw me on top of it, and I went for
a little rodeo ride.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Cool. So, like I know, with like bull riding, it's like,
how many seconds did you stay on your hog?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
In my opinion, too many? Because I was backwards and
I couldn't see where we were going. I'm just looking
down and praying that I don't end up underneath the
hog or into the wall somewhere.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
This is pretty cool. I like these stories.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
This is me See, I'm a whole new appreciation because
I can see Brody going down in the midway here
on the hog going and you got no saddle, no.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
It just you're just along for the ride at that point.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
I love it. I like it.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
So you guys heard you talked to her already about
your role models, right, So.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
What if you were talking to a young person who's
just this.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Is their very first fair showing you know they're nervous, right,
They know that this this cow outweighs them considerably because
they weigh like seventy pounds and the cow's like, oh man,
that's a nice snack. But you know they're trying to
like get the cow. And what advice do you give
the younger people on their very first fare, because if
(15:19):
they're looking to you guys for like, am I doing
this right?
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Or what are the tricks I should know?
Speaker 4 (15:25):
My biggest thing would be just go out there and
have fun. Who cares about how it goes your first time.
You're just going out there trying to learn, and everyone
knows that you're trying to learn, Like a seventy pound
kid is gonna know exactly what they're doing the first
time they're out there. So go out there, have fun
and enjoy the experience, and the people in the ring
will help you if it really gets to the pointment
they need to. But if you just go out there
and have fun and stay calm, that animal is gonna
sense of you're nervous, So the more calm you are,
(15:47):
the more fun you're having, the better it's gonna go.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
Ready, I would definitely say just keep calm, try not
to lose your composure because there's animals can sense that,
and when they sense that, they will take full advantage
of that. Can you even more upset and then we'll
try everything in their power to get to you. So
just keep your head down. Yeah, things go wrong, some
stuff doesn't go right for you, but everybody has it
(16:09):
and there's always a way that you can get through
that and push forwards and learn from everything that's happened.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Right. So, Brody, Delighting, Kate and Queen, thanks for joining
us today.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Have a great fair and I can tell you we
really have appreciated having you guys stop in to the
ACF four on one podcast helping us get it started
on the right foot today. So have a great week
and I know I'm going to see you guys around
the fair.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Oh yeah, ye, thank you, thank you, thank you,
