Abortion Is Not the Answer to Rape

Welcome to Check with Chip. I'mChip Maxwell. I was guest hosting on
KFAB recently and a listener came afterme for my pro life view on abortion.
I was reading her email aloud onthe air, and I stopped in
the middle of it, and thenshe said a follow up email said,
uh, huh, you're afraid toeven talk about it. I thought her

email was saying, I hope yourwife is raped and becomes pregnant by the
rapist, and I thought, Idon't think I'm going to read that over
the airwaves. I went back andlooked at her initial email during a break
and realized, Okay, she wasnot wishing that upon my wife. She
was just saying. The gist ofit was, you'd be singing a different

tune on abortion if your wife everhappened to be raped and then was impregnated
by the rapist. But you're afraidto talk about it. You don't want
to face those kinds of situations.I am not afraid to talk about it.
I have talked about it on theradio numerous times, and I have

written about it in my book FixIt Now, Rediscover Natural Law and get
America out of its cultural death spiral. What I offer now is an excerpt
from that book. It's from thechapter that deals with abortion. What about
exceptions? I would allow an exceptionto save the life of the mother,

though that can get tricky. Aleftist doctor will declare that giving birth always
could kill the mother, so thereis automatic justification for any abortion on that
basis. What about rape and incest? I answer with a commentary I have
delivered on the radio. It's avariation on a literary device used by C.

S. Lewis in his book calledThe screw Tape Letters. Screwtape is
a senior devil training his nephew juniordevil Wormwood, in the ways of tempting
humans and winning souls for our fatherbelow. As he calls Satan, he
calls God the enemy. In myeffort to emulate Lewis, Screwtape is counseling

Wormwood on how to handle a rapevictim impregnated by the rapist. My dear
Wormwood, So you're bursting with excitementbecause your patient has been a victim of
rape and is pregnant because of thatrape. Wormwood, I understand your youthful
enthusiasm at this possible double bonus,you have the initial stupendous violation of human

dignity, the rape, and thepossibility of stacking on top of that the
ultimate violation of human dignity, annihilatinga completely innocent human life. And Wormwood,
if you handle your patient properly,she will end up feeling worse about
the abortion than she does about therape. What's before you is in achievement.

Some tempters never accomplish in their entirecareers, So your enthusiasm and your
anticipation are justified. But Wormwood,do you realize what dangerous ground you are
on? Have you done your research? There are not very many of these
cases. It's hard to reach anyultimate conclusions. But so far it's been

more likely than not that the victimchooses to bring the child to term,
the victim chooses life instead of death. Do you realize that? You see?
We appeal to a sense of rage, justice, vengeance, strike back
in anger. The way to getback at the rapist. The way to

put the rate behind her is toeliminate the cancerous growth inside her. Get
this mistake out of me, Erasethis reminder of the agony I suffered and
still suffer. But Wormwood, member. The enemy never rests, The enemy
never sleeps. The enemy is alwaysthere for her. You cannot let her

make contact with the enemy. He'sso unfair, Wormwood. He utilizes weapons
that we don't have at our disposal. He does not appeal to rage,
justice, vengeance. He appeals tomercy, compassion, selflessness. Wormwood.
I repeat, do not let hermake contact with the enemy. He will

cheat. He'll tell her the secret. He'll tell her that it isn't just
about the life growing inside of her. He will share with her the secret
that what is best for her isto go through with this and let the
child live the empowering and nobling rehabilitativeact. The way she proves that the

rape does not define her or setthe course of her life is to rise
above it, break out of thebonds that we have so carefully created,
and break free of our whole scheme. Wormwood, you are on the precipice
of a possible disaster. Do youunderstand that if you mismanage this, If

you mismanage this, not only willyou lose all the benefit of the rape
that you've been able to enjoy sofar, but you will have on your
hands the appalling possibility of a seriesof positive developments that will demolish your career.
Choosing life instead of death for thehuman being growing inside her means maybe

she raises the child, which isbad enough. But what if the child
is adopted? Then the disasters multiplyfor us. Parents who desperately want a
child get one. The child getsa loving home. Who knows what additional
disasters could result from that. Thiscould be a career destroying debacle. Wormwood,

proceed carefully, keep me updated atevery juncture, your affectionate uncle,
screwtape. I have daughters ages twentyfour, twenty one, and nineteen.
If a daughter of mine is impregnatedby rape, my message to her will
be don't let evil win a secondvictory that may be more damaging to you

than the rape. Don't let evilaccomplish another violent, invasive assault on your
body and your dignity, and ofcourse, launch a lethal assault on the
baby in your wound. A childproduced by rape is as innocent as a
child produced by a loving couple.Rise above the rape, the rapist,

and evil itself obliterate all of itwith a large, bold, soaring,
evil shattering act of love for theinnocent life in your womb, starting with
me. Reach out to people andprograms ready to help you overcome the trauma
