Speaker 1 (00:01):
And now another tale, well calculated to keep you in.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Suspense? Do you believe in ghosts?

Speaker 3 (00:12):
No?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Well then how about portergeists?

Speaker 1 (00:16):
You know, all those noisy, mischievous spirits that wrap on
the walls and move the furniture, rattle.

Speaker 4 (00:21):
The windows, generally make a scary nuisance of themselves.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Do you believe in them? I mean, of course not
be the do I? And yet now and then we
hear reports reports from people of honesty integrity about strange,
unexplainable manifestations that have sent them screaming with terror into
the night. In a moment act one of Bells starring

(00:49):
Rosemary Rice and Bill Lipton, and written especially for suspense
by Jack Bundy.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
The lovely crowd today agree. Those who think young, say
pepsi please. They picked the right one, the modern like one.

Speaker 6 (01:06):
Now it's pepsi. For those who think young, so I
can and pick the drink that lets you drink young
as you think yees, get the right one, the modern
like one.

Speaker 5 (01:20):
Now it's pepsi. For those who think young, Hi, honey,
a home all.

Speaker 7 (01:35):
This home, Well, it won't be for long because listen, listen,
listen to.

Speaker 8 (01:40):
What that blasted elevated practically tearing through our living room
every couple of minutes, all.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Day, all night, all week, all year.

Speaker 9 (01:46):
Can we listen to it right on?

Speaker 10 (01:47):
Que too?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
So help me, Lucy? Oh what's the use, honey?

Speaker 8 (01:53):
Seriously, if we have to live in this place much longer,
I swear I'll go completely off my.

Speaker 9 (01:56):
Not I know exactly what you mean. I felt that
way myself.

Speaker 7 (02:00):
But from now on, mister Fielding, my dear, my darling,
mister Fielding, it won't be necessary.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Are you kidding?

Speaker 10 (02:06):
I've never talked to so many real estate agents, plowed
through so many classified ads in my life.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
And what's it got me, Darling?

Speaker 9 (02:12):
It's got your me and listened to me.

Speaker 7 (02:14):
I've told you more than once that I'm psychic, and
now I know that I am.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Please, Honey, not that again. How about some dinner.

Speaker 9 (02:20):
But it's true, and now I know it is now
I can prove it.

Speaker 10 (02:24):
You mean, that's so called guardian angel of yours has
found us a nice, quiet, little home in the country
that we can afford.

Speaker 7 (02:31):
That's exactly what I mean, because listen, Henry, listen very carefully.

Speaker 8 (02:35):
Now, really, Lucy, I've told you a thousand times. You
can't seriously believe all that psychic stuff and all that
junk about a guardian angel.

Speaker 7 (02:41):
It's not junk. My guardian angel looks after me, and
I am sure of it. Now you are, yes, I
am looked.

Speaker 9 (02:48):
Look at this newspaper. You see it isn't the Herald
Examiner at all. It's the Sentinel.

Speaker 8 (02:53):
You mean, because you picked up the wrong newspaper by
mistake that makes you psychic?

Speaker 9 (02:57):
It wasn't any mistake.

Speaker 7 (02:59):
A few minutes as I was leaving the supermarket for
some strange reason. I can't explain that there was something something,
some strange feeling, some influence, or something that just made
me reach out and grab this particular paper made me Henry.

Speaker 9 (03:17):
I couldn't help myself.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Say, your psychic? How about some dinners?

Speaker 7 (03:20):
Well, I am I must be, because look look here
on the real estate.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Page, Honey, I've read them all, Henry, not this one.

Speaker 9 (03:27):
Will you listen?

Speaker 7 (03:29):
Small six room colonial cottage with an easy driving distance
of bell manor development.

Speaker 10 (03:36):
Oh no, you know, done well. We can never afford
a section like that bell Miner yet.

Speaker 9 (03:40):
Will you please listen?

Speaker 7 (03:41):
Excellent condition, bank inspected, fully insured, two bedrooms, one.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Back, and have they dared to put in the price.

Speaker 7 (03:48):
Wait, large living room with stone fireplace, built on garage,
full half acre plot, ideal for young couple anxious to
get away from the noise and dirt.

Speaker 9 (03:58):
Of the city. Isn't just exactly what we've.

Speaker 10 (04:01):
Been looking for, sure, sure it is, But the rental
on a place like that, it'd be about it.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
I'd say three.

Speaker 9 (04:06):
Hundred, Henry, that's just it. The rental is one hundred
and fifteen dollars a month.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Oh, now you are kid, look for yourself.

Speaker 9 (04:13):
See one hundred and fifteen dollars a month.

Speaker 10 (04:17):
I can't believe it, but that's what it says in
black and white.

Speaker 7 (04:19):
Oh, Henry, it's a dream come true, and all because
of my guardian Angel and that strange, unexplainable feeling.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well, there's something wrong with it. Let's face it, Lucy.

Speaker 10 (04:30):
There must be a rental like that for a place
like that in this day and age.

Speaker 9 (04:33):
Well, at least we're going to look into.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
It, aren't we, honey.

Speaker 9 (04:36):
But we have to.

Speaker 7 (04:39):
I mean because of the way we've found out about it,
the way that that something I can't explain forced me
to buy this paper to find this particular.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Ad by your good old guardian Angel.

Speaker 9 (04:49):
Oh please, dear, don't kid me about it.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Okay, okay, we'll look into it. We've got to lose
who's the agent.

Speaker 9 (04:56):
Oh, let's see his name is? Oh, here's or the
strickler on.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
First thing in the morning. Thank you to And if
there isn't something wrong with it.

Speaker 10 (05:05):
Well, honey, maybe I'll give in and admit that you are.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
Psychic in just a moment. The second act of.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Suspense, when Napoleon met his waterloo, the news was slow
in coming across the Atlantic. However, at that time Americans,
though interested, were little affected by what was taking place
an entire ocean away. Today that ocean has shrunk proportionately
to about the size of Walden Pond, with little of

(05:48):
the serenity about it so admired by Thoroh. Today, we
want to know immediately what is going on all around
the world. Our concern is vital to the free world.
The world wide network of veteran CBS news correspondence meets
this need to know and know immediately. Every hour on
the hour, every day, Monday through Friday, This station of

(06:08):
the CBS Radio Network brings you expanded CBS news coverage,
the most complete network news coverage and broadcasting today throughout
the weekend too. Timely news reports at frequent intervals. Keep
up with the news as it happens by keeping tune
to this CBS radio network station.

Speaker 7 (06:31):
And these pictures, Henry, Oh, isn't it feud gorgeous?

Speaker 8 (06:35):
Huh lucy, it looks real nice. But when were these
pictures taken, mister Stickley.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Only a couple of days ago.

Speaker 10 (06:42):
Mister Fielding took myself as soon as we got the
place for a listing. It's no wonder we've had so
many calls on it already, and.

Speaker 9 (06:49):
We certainly can't argue with this bank report on it.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
That's right, miss Fielding. The bank wouldn't dare to lie
about the place.

Speaker 10 (06:55):
I still don't understand this low rental. Can you explain it? Well,
of course, it isn't in bell manor it's two or
three miles out, real country, farm country.

Speaker 9 (07:04):
Hmm, that's what I like about it.

Speaker 10 (07:05):
But it has gas and water and electricity already to use.
And well, of course the telephones, the old fashioned kind.
I mean, you have to call the operator.

Speaker 9 (07:14):
Who cares, Darling, this is it?

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Yep? Yeah, I guess it is, thanks darling.

Speaker 9 (07:22):
And now do you believe sure?

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Sure, anything you say. Believe what, miss Fielding.

Speaker 10 (07:28):
Mister Strickley, there ain't no attention, mister Strickler. My wife's
a bit superstitious thing.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
She's psychic, is all. Think nothing of it. Psychic.

Speaker 9 (07:35):
Did you say, what's the matter.

Speaker 10 (07:37):
Mister Strickland, Oh, nothing like your husband says, nothing at all.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
It's just that the last folks in the house. Well,
you know how it is.

Speaker 10 (07:46):
The noises some folks aren't quite used to out there
in the country. I like the tree branches hitting on
the roof when the wind blows, and the well, let
me tell you, young ones something. Yes, I just want
you to know that I stand every deal I make.
So you take along both copies of this lease, and
when you've seen the house, make sure it's right for you,

(08:08):
then you can mail my copy back to me.

Speaker 9 (08:10):
Oh, I'm sure that isn't one bit necessary, though.

Speaker 8 (08:12):
That's just about as fair a proposition as we could
ask for, mister Strickler. Now, if you let me have
the keys, yes, sir, here you are, Thanks and good luck.

Speaker 7 (08:30):
Hugh Honey, I never realized we'd had so many things
in that stuffy little apartment.

Speaker 10 (08:36):
Unless we'll have to try to fill up this place. Now,
where do you want this chair?

Speaker 7 (08:40):
You sign?

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Are over there near the fireplace?

Speaker 7 (08:42):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (08:44):
Anywhere?

Speaker 10 (08:44):
Okay, then I'll put it right here and put it
to use.

Speaker 9 (08:51):
I will still have to buy things from one whole bedroom, though.

Speaker 8 (08:54):
I guess, and then bring their sleeping bags by the
time we get all this stuff, so that will.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Be glad it's all we have.

Speaker 7 (09:00):
Why you, lazy bumb there's still an awful lot of
unpacking to do.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Oh hum, just let me relax for a minute.

Speaker 7 (09:05):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Some of those furniture was pretty healthy to push around.

Speaker 7 (09:09):
Well.

Speaker 9 (09:09):
I still think the movers should have stayed to help.

Speaker 7 (09:12):
Say did you hear one of them say they moved
the last family in and out of here? M Those
men were certainly anxious to get away once they'd unloaded
that truck.

Speaker 10 (09:21):
I wonder why so they want to get back before
the Starborough. I'm afraid of our back country roads, I guess.

Speaker 9 (09:29):
Henry, how do you think these drapes will look here?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
On?

Speaker 9 (09:33):
Henry, come on help.

Speaker 8 (09:35):
Me hm hmm euh huh oh oh, I'll be right
with you as soon as I finished this cigarette.

Speaker 9 (09:40):
You'd better.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Listen to that rain out there. Isn't that soothing?

Speaker 7 (09:45):
You know, I just knew this was going to be
it for us, Henry, after buying that other newspaper that
way for no reason at all except that weird, strange
feeling that I had.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah, yeah, regular miracle.

Speaker 7 (09:57):
You know I didn't tell you this, but I was
in this section with an agent just last week. And
do you know the lowest rental we could.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Find two hundred and a quarter. I was out here toom.

Speaker 9 (10:07):
Two hundred and fifty and not nearly as nice as this.

Speaker 10 (10:11):
Yeah, that sweet old Guardian angel you're always talking about
must be working over.

Speaker 9 (10:15):
Time, Henry. Don't joke about it.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Okay, then prove it. Now here's your chance to prove it.

Speaker 8 (10:19):
Lucy, call in some friendly polter geist to help me
move the rest of this furniture.

Speaker 7 (10:24):
Huh oh, Now, stop at you, lazy bomb, but you
are a nice lazy bum.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Best there is.

Speaker 10 (10:32):
Listen that lovely rain out there and the thunder nothing ominous,
menacing or frightening.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Well, I should hope, not just nice and peaceful. No,
I guess land up this way and stand a bit
of rain too. The crop's a lot of good crops.

Speaker 9 (10:46):
Did you say?

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Uh? Oh?

Speaker 7 (10:48):
Now, look, little city boy, don't try to sound like
a farmer, just because there's a little plot of land
around us.

Speaker 9 (10:55):
And will you please get up out of that chair
and help Henry?

Speaker 8 (10:58):
Whoa sure, sure, sweetie, you don't have to hit me
over the head with a thunderbolt.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Oh that was a.

Speaker 9 (11:05):
Close one out here in the country all along this way.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
I'm scared alone. Did you say hello?

Speaker 3 (11:11):
How about that?

Speaker 10 (11:11):
We barely move in here? Somebody calls us up on
the cold I'm to think of it. He did tell
us the phone was all hooked up.

Speaker 9 (11:18):
Where is it? Oh, I'm glad it is hooked up.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
Now we can call up some of our friends and
have them come out and see us.

Speaker 9 (11:23):
I wonder who it is here?

Speaker 10 (11:24):
It is under this crap here?

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Now?

Speaker 9 (11:29):
Hello, but don't bite anybody up. You're just yet not
so we're said.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Okay, don't worry.

Speaker 10 (11:34):
Hello, Hello?

Speaker 2 (11:38):
What's going on here?

Speaker 10 (11:39):
Who is it?

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Henry?

Speaker 2 (11:41):
I only wish I hello? Hello?

Speaker 11 (11:47):
Number? Please? What I said? Number? Please?

Speaker 5 (11:50):
Well?

Speaker 10 (11:50):
Yeah, yeah, I know you did, But listen, didn't you
just ring here?

Speaker 5 (11:54):
No?

Speaker 11 (11:54):
I did not, sir.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Are you sure about that?

Speaker 11 (11:56):
Of course? I am, sir.

Speaker 10 (11:58):
Oh okay, I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
It's funny.

Speaker 9 (12:03):
Who was it? Henry?

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Nobody, nothing. I guess you must have wrung us by mistake.

Speaker 9 (12:10):
Now will you give me a hand with these drapes? Please?

Speaker 8 (12:12):
Yeah, sure, be glad to pull everything this time. I
hope there's somebody on the line. Hello, Hello, just a minute.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
What is this?

Speaker 12 (12:24):
Hello? Hello number?

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Please number? Please listen. This phone just rang again.

Speaker 11 (12:31):
You must be mistaken, sir. I didn't ring you.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Well, somebody did operateor my wife and I both heard it.

Speaker 11 (12:36):
Well, there's no call for you on the switchboard, sir.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
And why did you ring?

Speaker 11 (12:40):
I did not ring.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Now, I don't tell me. Okay, okay, Henry.

Speaker 9 (12:45):
There was nobody there again?

Speaker 8 (12:47):
Was there noboddy but the operator and those funny little
she claims she didn't ring. That's very funny, yeah, funny,
only it is in this time?

Speaker 10 (12:57):
Hello, all right, all right, let's have it watch the gag.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Hello, Hello.

Speaker 11 (13:04):
Number?

Speaker 10 (13:05):
Please now, look, operator, don't tell me I didn't ring
the phone this time.

Speaker 11 (13:09):
I'm sorry, but I did not, sir.

Speaker 8 (13:11):
Well, i'm sorry too, but you must have. I tell
you this phone rang. It rang before too, in spite
of what you say. Now, let's cut out this foolishness.

Speaker 11 (13:17):
I am very sorry, sir, but you must be mistaken.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
What do you mean? What are you talking about?

Speaker 11 (13:21):
It could only have been wrung through this switchboard. I'm
on duty alone here and I did not ring it.
Oh no, and now if you would excuse me, I
have another call to hand.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
No I have to say, is that's somebody around here?

Speaker 3 (13:31):
And it isn't me?

Speaker 8 (13:31):
As a cock eyed hello, some of the guns? She
can hang up on me? Just what does she thinks
she's up to?

Speaker 9 (13:38):
Wait, Henry, losing your temper won't help.

Speaker 10 (13:40):
Now wait a minute, hello, operator, Get up?

Speaker 2 (13:48):
What what?

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Get out?

Speaker 11 (13:50):
Get out?

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Wait? Now? Wait what is this?

Speaker 8 (13:53):
Get out?

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Get out?

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Get out?

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Operator, Get up? Get No, this is crazy.

Speaker 9 (14:10):
What is Henry? What is it? Tell me?

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Sure, I'll tell you it's a crazy gag or something. Well,
I've had enough of it. I'm carrying out this own.

Speaker 10 (14:19):
We'll have no more of that nonsense.

Speaker 9 (14:23):
Tell me, I've never seen you this way. What's the matter?

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Nothing? Not Now the chord broken off.

Speaker 10 (14:28):
It won't happen again, because it can't happen again.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
No, no is right.

Speaker 7 (14:37):
Tell me what is what happened on the telephone? How
could it ring after you couldn't?

Speaker 10 (14:47):
It's impossible, So it didn't We we.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Were hearing things.

Speaker 9 (14:55):
Oh no, Henry, you know that isn't so.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yes, yes, it has to be you know what, I
know it. We just we only and Lucy, we only
thought we heard it ring again, that is anything else
simply doesn't make sense.

Speaker 9 (15:10):
And you were hearing something on that phone before, weren't you?

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Weren't you?

Speaker 9 (15:14):
Henry?

Speaker 2 (15:16):
All right? Yes, yes, I was hearing something.

Speaker 10 (15:20):
A lot of laughing, chattering, screwy, a lot of little tiny.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
And a woman's voice. Only. Oh, don't you see it
was only some practical joker.

Speaker 9 (15:32):
It had to be No, Henry, I'm afraid no, no
one else.

Speaker 10 (15:35):
Could it be some of your supernatural spirit friends? I
suppose yes, Oh, Lucy, Lucy, don't be ridiculous. No, no,
the whole thing's ridiculous, utterly ridiculous.

Speaker 9 (15:43):
No, Henry, you said, a woman's all.

Speaker 8 (15:45):
It's work, the excitement of getting here, that's all it is.

Speaker 9 (15:47):
You said, a woman's voice, Henry.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Forget it, just forget it, Lucy.

Speaker 10 (15:51):
It's just that we're excited.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
I listened.

Speaker 10 (15:57):
You go out, make up out of caffie. We'll sit
down and relax and be real calm about this. We'll
sit down and we'll calmly. Well, don't you see we're overwrought,
We're over worked with all this moving, Lucy, and.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Only excitement. That's all it is. Wish to heaven. I
could believe it has to be.

Speaker 10 (16:17):
I tell you it's the only possible explanation there can
be for it.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Lucy, just oh, it's all right. It's a doorbell. Okay?

Speaker 9 (16:32):
Can we please don't answer it?

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Where's a bell that makes some sense? For a change?

Speaker 1 (16:36):
What if it's it's just take it easy now, yeah?

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Huh?

Speaker 9 (16:43):
Can we can we key here?

Speaker 2 (16:48):
It was? There was no one there? Are you sure? Yes?

Speaker 10 (16:55):
Yes, I'm sure. I'm absolutely sure there was no one there.

Speaker 9 (16:58):
Henry, don't you see what this means?

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Then?

Speaker 9 (17:01):
It's this house?

Speaker 10 (17:02):
Oh no, Lucy, No, No, what you'r thinking is just
a lot of crazy superstitions.

Speaker 9 (17:06):
He's listened to me. You know what it means to
this house.

Speaker 10 (17:09):
Okay, I'm gonna find out what it means?

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Yes, Hello, who are you? Whrang this bell?

Speaker 7 (17:15):
Where are you?

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Who are you?

Speaker 9 (17:17):
No?

Speaker 3 (17:18):
No?

Speaker 9 (17:18):
Do you believe?

Speaker 10 (17:19):
No?

Speaker 9 (17:20):
Were there any wet footprints on the porch?

Speaker 5 (17:23):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (17:23):
There wasn't any wet footprints. That were any dry footprints?
There wasn't anything, Henry.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
It's a warning. We've got to leave.

Speaker 10 (17:29):
We got to get out of here, Get out of here.

Speaker 9 (17:31):
Yes, now before it's too late.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Why now, why Lucy?

Speaker 10 (17:33):
Just because that telephone got some crazy voice on it
said we should.

Speaker 9 (17:36):
Is that what it said? That we've got to because.

Speaker 7 (17:39):
This house is haunted, it's full of evil spirits, since.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
You know it is.

Speaker 8 (17:44):
And you've got to get over this crazy idea that
anything that happens anything you can't explain, its supernatural.

Speaker 7 (17:49):
That's why the phone rang and the doorbell rang, and
there was nobody there.

Speaker 9 (17:55):
There's some evil, evil spirit.

Speaker 10 (17:58):
No, no, Lucy, no, no, some practical joke of that soul.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
And I stopped the sun sense, get hold of yourself.

Speaker 9 (18:02):
Come on the rendo solo. Nobody will stay here. It's
why that Asan was so so start when you told them.
Then I'm sacking. I am Henry, and there is something
wrong with this place. We've got to get out of here.
You've got to believe it. We've got to believe something
terrible will happen.

Speaker 10 (18:17):
And I say, you've let your crazy ideas. I don't know,
I don't know, but there has to be some logical
explanation and I'm not gonna let a lot of superstitious hogwash. Okay,
now we tear that thing off the wall, right off
the wall. Okay, all right here, look at it.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
It stopped.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Now you listen, Lucy.

Speaker 9 (18:41):
Please, please you listen. You're only losing your temper refusing
to see what this really means.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
A storm.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
The air is full of electricity.

Speaker 10 (18:48):
The long wires that were hooked up to these things,
a long telephone lines out there, and the lightning.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
That's what did it. And I'll be sensible. We've got
to keep our heads about this.

Speaker 9 (18:56):
The voices you heard, can you explain them?

Speaker 10 (18:59):
Yes, yes I can. The wires got crossed up in
the wind, and that's all.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
And when it rang again, after our fatigue, our excitement,
I tell you we were excited.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
We only thought we heard it.

Speaker 9 (19:11):
No, you're wrong, seee Henry, I'm banking you. Let's leave.

Speaker 7 (19:15):
Let's get out of here, go go back into town.
Some hotels, Yes, some hotel in town. Is that's far
away from the terrible things it is.

Speaker 8 (19:24):
And I say, why this thing run again? Has this
doorbell rung again since I ripped it off the wall? No,
of course it hasn't.

Speaker 10 (19:33):
Let's get out of it, don't you see, honey, what
all that Guardian angel stuff, all that psychic.

Speaker 2 (19:37):

how it's fighting.

seconds to warm up.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 10 (20:32):
I don't know how good it will be though, after
that big storm we had.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Well, thanks sir, I feel better, Thanks Darling. I feel
a lot safer now, Lucy, we see. I still can't
help wondering if we weren't a little foolish.

lightning struck the Fielding home with such force as to

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
