160 years ago today, March 19th, 1865, a report from a commissary store in Atlanta

shed light on the hardships of people left in the wake of war.
The store is almost constantly thronged with women and children begging for
bread. They do not ask for meat, but are satisfied with bread alone. During the

late freezing weather, females walk as far as 16 miles in the mud and ice for the
purpose of getting a meal which they could carry home upon their shoulders.
