While General Lee prepared to meet Lieutenant General Grant at Appomattox, Sam Richards and
family attended worship service in Atlanta.
The family did not particularly enjoy the sermon, as Richards wrote, "The reverend espoused,

quote, 'The leaders of the rebellion should not be touched in person or liberty, but that
they're pride of us should be humbled and their power to do harm taken away by confiscating
their estates and disenfranchising them.'"
