Major General Joe Wheeler and his troopers received orders from General Beauregard, which
detailed the expected actions of the cavalry officer.
Beauregard wrote, "Obey General Hardee's instructions, but should you find that the enemy
intends moving in force on Columbia instead of Augusta, join your command to Major General
