My name is Ryan Peterson. I worked in Radio Broadcasting for 12 years between 1989 & 2006. I also had a 17-year career as a Police Officer. After retirement from both careers, I needed to find a creative outlet again, so I've started a Video Podcast called "Discerning the Unknown." Discerning the Unknown is a Video Podcast that explores WHAT we think and WHY we think it. I explore topics like Conspiracy Theories and why people believe them and will defend them so fiercely. We'll discuss Ancient Myths, the Paranormal, as well as various Hoaxes and Misinformation that is spread far and wide today. I'll have experts that know the real truth through their real research and education. Of course, I realize that covers a lot of ground. We'll discuss being "open-minded" and we'll explore the difference between what that means versus being just plain gullible. On this show, I have fun and enlightening conversations where both you and I can both learn something from the featured expert guest. I ask experts to share their experiences and their research. We discuss WHAT people think today and WHY they think it. By listening to this podcast, it will MAKE you think about HOW you think. Years ago, I tried the "political debate" type of show. I didn't like that. Today, I don't argue or debate politics. I don't have guests on my show that I disagree with politically. My show is not about fighting, arguing or debating. I won't call guests or listeners names. If you really want a one-sided commentary of the world that just strokes your ego and totally aligns with your political views, and tells you exactly what you need to believe, then there are plenty of podcasts on the Internet for that. You can go find one of them. I present information you may not have thought about before from experts that have done real research. Not "Google Research." I sometimes share some unique and funny stories from my 12 years as a small market Radio Broadcaster and I occasionally share memories from what I experienced during my 17-year career as a small-town Police Officer.I'm currently writing a book about all those weird experiences. One thing I try my best NOT to do is spread 'Fake News.' The spread of 'Fake News' is one of society's biggest issues today.Misinformation is dangerous. To slow down the spread of Fake News, we have a responsibility to scrutinize what we read and ensure what we repeat to others is the truth. Rumors, Speculation, and Theories are not News. YouTube Videos and Facebook Memes are NOT the news. This show encourages Critical Thinking and will promote Emotional Intelligence. I ask guests if their data supports the theory. I place a high value on ethics, truth and evidence that tells the real story. So, I speak with guests who present factual information that can be verified. Be Discerning of new information. Trust AND Verify. If we can't do both, we should reconsider whetheror not it is safe to spread it to others.
