know we're getting closer to Thanksgiving break, which means we're

also closer to the end of the mastering win or break,
and I'm so thankful that we have this platform and
for all of our audience, you know, listening and watching

I was gonna say good, and then I sputtered into
the microphone. I was working on a day off, working
on another day off. That's two days off this week
that I have worked. The only day I haven't worked
is today, and it feels nice to not have to
go to work. I'm good, I'm good, I'm good. I
keep telling people that work, I am overwhelmed with the
number of blessings I have, which is a good way

of me to frame I am doing too many things.
Because I am doing too many things, I am stretched
incredibly thin. But I keep looking at it as no,
I'm blessed to get to do all these things that
I get to do because nobody else gets to do
these things. Nobody else at that school has ever done
the combination of things that I'm doing. So I like

to think of it as like, no, I'm a pioneer
in the sense that I am going to be a
case study of probably a heart tack later in my
future here, but of what it looks like when we
have all of these people doing all these things. We
have English teacher over here, we got chemistry teacher over here.
Nobody's a mental social health slash stagecraft teacher. That's me

one of one the end, So I'm I'm trying to
frame it like that and not Oh, we might have
a show on Thursday and everything broke and I'm still
waiting to hear back about a tree lighting event that
my mental social health kids might be involved in. So
there's so much stuff going on that I haven't even
told you about yet that I my head feels very full.

It also feels full because the weather changed here, Tyler.
In my head is bursting with a migraine, and uh,
it's also bursting with lots of thoughts. And you hit
me with one here that we're going to get to
in a second. But let's do a check in. How's
the school year going?

need to think about this. That was a beautiful intro.

a pioneer, and I'm glad that you can recognize that.

borrow it. Overwhelmed with blessings. That's tough. I am going
to start using that, I will credit you every once

in a while when people ask, But I am going
to use that because it is accurate. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
Hopefully it's an acurate description for how I feel about
being a sunny slope, amazing high school, public high school
here in the valley in Phoenix. It's man, it's been
lots of learning opportunities. Going back into the profession has

been such an interesting existence. You know, there are some
things where I'm like, okay, I remember how to do that. Oh,
it's like riding a bike. You know, here we go here,
here's the lesson planning, here's the learning targets, here's you know,
the IEP meetings, all those things. But there are also
inevitably surprises being at a new school, working at a
new district. Certainly there are lots of meetings. There's new faces,
and there's new names, and something that's been heavy on

my mind. And of course the kids are awesome, right,
kids are awesome everywhere. What's been heavy on my mind
is not that everything has to have a sports connection,
but I think about, let's say, like a Kevin Durant
and now he's bounced around from team to team, He's
undeniably a Hall of Famer. When it comes time for
him to hang up the jersey, which city belongs to

him or which city does he belong to? Where does
that jersey Seattle get hung up at? Is it Seattle slash? Okay?

Is it Golden State? I don't think it's going to
be Phoenix. Maybe you'll end up being Houston. But what
I'm thinking about now is I mean perpetually you and
I have these conversations as well, and I don't think
this is unique to us as educators. Year to year,
sometimes you ask yourself like is this for me? Is
this what I want to do long term? Especially on
the tough days, you ask yourself that. But I'm also

(04:54):
thinking of where can I just find sort of a
work home in the sense that I think what I'm
desiring it's not from just desiring peace always in my life,
which continues to be the north star. Where could my
jersey be hung up? One day? I often think about
all the times we had at Morana, the great times.

(05:15):
I didn't realize those were the great times when we
were in them. I didn't know any better. But I
have to give myself grace to remember, Okay, that was
a chapter of my life. I'm so grateful for that.
This is a new chapter. Chapter I've decided to accept.
And how can I just find stability and find a
place to call home for the next several years. You know,
I've kind of bounced around from different companies or different

(05:39):
schools within the last few years, you know, going from
Cactus being there less than a year to being at
ASU for three years and deciding Okay, I need something
new now. And so now I find myself at Sunny
Slope and Glendale Union High School District, and I just
want that stability. I look at somebody like you, Frankly,
who's been able to ride it out at one place
through the ups and the down, and my goodness, man,

(06:01):
when you hang it up at Miranda High School. We
were speaking about this during the production meeting. I am
going to sign that change dot org petition to get
your statue on Miranda High School's campus because there are
so many times when you and I hopefully this translates
to our friends who are even outside of education. There
are so many times at work or with a company
where you think, is this my time to just leave?

(06:23):
I'm pissed off about this or this other thing isn't
going well. But I do find there's real beauty in
sticking it out somewhere and navigating the ups and downs,
because at the end of the day, your jersey will
be hung up in the rafters there. And that's not
to say don't take a chance to bet on yourself
and spread your wings. But I'm thinking about, ay, is

(06:44):
this for me long term? Because we work exceptionally hard
Brad and a thousand people have left the profession since
July fet just in Arizona, which is jarring and on
one hand gives me validation that this work is really difficult,
but on the other hand, hand reminds me how blessed
we are to be in this role where we can
have hopefully such a tangible impact. So there's a lot

(07:06):
going on in my mind. As you can hear, I'm
just thankful I'm putting one foot in front of the
other and continuing to try to create good habits for
myself at a new school that can just continue to
lead toward forward momentum. As I just meet new people
and try to establish my name in a new setting.
You know, it takes time to really establish relationships and

(07:27):
establish who you are and build that name ID. So
I'm just trying to do good work, do great work,
one day at a time, and hope that at the
end I'll be able to check all those boxes and
just find peace. And just find peace. I think that
we sometimes have an unhealthy relationship with work. I don't
know if that's specifically in America, but we just sort

(07:48):
of put our all into work so much so that
even on the weekends, we're either driving to campus or
doing work. How can I just how can I find
purpose in my career also not feel as though I'm
sacrificing my life outside of it financially, emotionally. I continue
to try to find that balance.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
You know, I was thinking about that as you were
saying that, Like, you know, I was talking to some
teacher I guess, acquaintances that you know, retired from the
profession ten fifteen years ago now, and how different it
was when they were there, and ten fifteen years ago
it was not good. It was probably worse than it

(08:31):
is now. You go back twenty years, almost twenty years
when I started. It's in Arizona. That's when riffing started
to happen. That's when Governor Brewer cut a billion dollars
for the budget and like just slashed educator positions entirely
because of that budget cup But we were in the recession,
which seems like we're hurtling toward one pretty big one.

(08:51):
Things are things are kind of dicey, and I just
think about what the demands. It doesn't seem like anything
was taking taken away. It just seems like things get
layered on top of each other, and and then it
becomes the expectation is no longer do this one thing
but differently. It's no, keep doing that but differently, but
keep doing it, but also these ten things. And I

(09:11):
think that's really where it becomes challenging, where it's no
I'm reminded when I worked at Walmart, I punched in
and punched out. There would be days where I worked
in housewares and I had to had to like pull
the blenders forward or go fold some towels or whatever.
And housewares and domestics, excuse me, they've usually lumped to
one person into both departments. That is a massive department.

(09:34):
In our store. It was like there's all the outer
aisles on the non grocery side, and that's electronics, toys, automotive, hardware,
lawn and garden pets, HbA Cosmetics. I just did the
whole ring. I remember where they all were.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Wow, it's you get to like and then you still
uncertain that you still got it.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Oh, please don't do that to me, production production team. No,
I'm having flashbacks to media to the Chance.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
So the point is that everything in the middle there,
except for fabrics and crafts, was all domestics and housewares.
So it's like, I don't know a quarter of the store.
It's those two departments. It's probably less than that, but
it felt like it. I would get pulled to do something.
I'd come in at too. My department manager was there
until four, and she'd be like, all right, here's what

(10:25):
we're doing today. We got to unbox this, price it
out and put it on shelves. So so tag the prices,
put it on the shelves. Telson's over there, scan it,
price it, shelf it. Okay, all right, Suddenly I'm getting
called up to cash here because they're out of cashier's.
I'd get back, Hey, flip out this end cap real quick.
The GM would tell me to do this, and then
the store manager would be like, why'd you do that?
Flip it back, and then a support manager would be like, hey,

(10:47):
I need you to cover hardware. They need a lunch,
and then I'd be called back up to do the
the front register. And then some other manager and an
assistant manager will come up and be like, you have
eight return cards in your department. Why haven't you put
them back yet? Just the steady stream of expectation of like,
I am one person, and yeah, it just gave me

(11:08):
ten different responsibilities at the same time. I cannot do Logistically,
I cannot do any of the things you have asked
me to do. I can do one or two of
those things, and that's all I can do in the
time that I am allotted. I can skip my lunch,
but you will write me up for skipping my lunch.
I can skip my brakes, but you will write me
up for skipping my brakes, and you will not pay

(11:30):
me for overtime. So which one of these you want?
So thinking about that, it just definitely feels like a
parallel of do this, do this, do this, do this.
But I don't know if that's how everybody feels. And
I certainly don't blame the administrators because it's not like
they're the ones going, yeah, you have to do all
these things. It's usually coming down from like a state

(11:52):
thing to a board thing to you know, it just
trickles all the way down because I know that they've
got to be frustrated with too, and it's like, you know,
institute this other thing, and but why were They're already
all burnt out. We're losing teachers left and right now
we're gonna be like and also this that's that's nuts,
that's nuts. I think final thing I'll say is that

(12:16):
if you're not in education, I don't have a parallel
for you. That's why I try to put the Walmart
in there, because there's it's it'd be like if I
were also the store manager and the GM and the assistant,
because I have to dictate that job and what that
job looks like, figure out a plan for it, and
then go implement that job. While doing that job, that's

(12:38):
teaching m.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
HM that there's nothing that I can compare it to either.
I always summarize that. I've probably even said it on
our podcast a few times. Brad. The highs of what
we get to do are are so high, and it's
so tangibly. Oh I am making a difference. I'm doing
something good for society. The if you're not careful, can

(13:02):
be really low. So it's just how do you operate
in that middle space and give yourself grace and just
remind yourself that you're doing a good job. You can
always do more, we can always strive to be better.
That's an inherent part of the work is how do
we continuously improve? But I think just psychologically reminding ourselves
that we're doing a good job, we are needed. And

(13:25):
I think half the battle is just showing up, right.
Half of it is just showing up being you, loving
what you do, loving who you get to do it with,
and just the mindset itself to me, can take care
a lot of the take care of a lot of
the ailments or issues we run into. Not everything. But
much like much like basketball, much like podcasting, think so

(13:48):
much of it is a mental game, Like what is
your mental space when you show up to work every day?
So I've been trying to work on that day in
and day out, and also just be thankful not only
for you, and like you said, the other educators who
who I'm blessed to know, who I've become friends. That
feels pretty unique to what we get to do as
well as we've become really close with people. But also
just acknowledge we've worked really hard to get to where

(14:11):
we're at, classes, trainings, degrees. We've worked hard to earn
the privilege of having these these stressors, right, they say,
like pressure is a privilege. We've worked hard to have
the privilege of having this pressure. And I think we
do a much better job than we give ourselves credit for.
So how can we do that but also take care

(14:31):
of our health, take care of our finances, make sure
we're present for people we care about. It's all of
it is on my mind, and I'm grateful that we
are almost reaching the end of the semester so that
we get a time to just exhale and rejuvenate.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
It's coming, yeah, and it's a good reminder to go, like,
none of this stuff is going to end with death, right,
Like it's none of our job is going to be like,
oh if I don't do that, I'm going to lose
a hand. So the pressure of life and death, which
we place on it ourselves because it does feel that important,
is also part of that. But it's but it's not,

(15:07):
but sometimes sometimes it is. Sometimes we've got to do
those lockdown trainings or just practice a lockdown drill, and
sometimes it's like, now we got to take it seriously.
And you brought up like those those ailments and those
those problems, those those things that come up professionally, personally, whatever,
I think it's important to acknowledge them and try to

(15:28):
soothe them. And I know that we're about to talk
about it, Tyler, about Steph's ailments recent and I believe
I predicted this, but it's time for the two most
important words in GI stuff.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
That's right that you did, we have to talk about it.
I thought of you when this went down on Monday,
Steph watch following Stephanie Vauquer's victory over wherekel Rodriguez on row,
Nikki Bella attacked our champion in the middle of the ring.
We've spoken about this, we have documented this for weeks, Brad,
the blossoming of this friendship between Bella and vak here

only to prepare for it to crumble, for it to
disintegrate right in front of our faces. We prepared for this.
I thought this wouldn't happen until the holidays, maybe even Christmas.
But I'm not mad at this decision was made so soon, because,
as we've spoken about on previous episodes of gi Our Champ,
Stephie back here needs some challengers, some legit challengers who

can threat to take that title off of her, although
we don't want that to happen. We need some credible challengers.
Nicki Bella certainly is that at the moment. Of course,
the Boston crowd for Monday Night raw booed Nicki Bella
for this. We had gi bowed her for this egregious action,
but you think it's best for business, and I'm excited
to see what they can do together.

Well, you said you thought it would be around Christmas time,
and it is almost Christmas time and it's time for
those holiday movies to come busting out, Tyler a holiday movie.
You told me about this. I know your dad, shout
out to him told you about this. But Home Alone
turned thirty five, so it's time for Back in the Day.

school prepare yourselves for Back in the Day.

Thank you for the shout out to my dad. You
know he's very fond of you. Yeah, shout out to
him literally this morning, just mere hours before we recorded,
my dad told me, Hey, did you know Home Alone
turned thirty five. My first thought was no way, so
I double checked it. Not that I don't trust my dad,
I love that man, but I did verify he is right.
This film came out in nineteen ninety. Of course, it

is all around the story of Kevin McAllister, a plucky
young man who was left behind for Chris, missed by
his family on accident, and the hygiens that into are
obviously incredible. I think anyone listening or watching this right
now but I'm listening to us or watching this right now,
are probably familiar with Home Alone, So I'll skip the
full plot details. But what are your thoughts reflecting on

the anniversary of such an important film? And of course
we got to know where does Home Alone rank in
your Christmas filmography rotation?

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Man, it's it's up there. For me, there's a few
movies that I I'm just gonna list my my movies
that I need to see around Christmas time, Christmas vacation.
I will never skip it. It is always hilarious to me.
There's just such quotable moments in that movie. Every time

(18:45):
I have eggnog. If I take a sip of that,
I always had to hit people with it. It's good, good, good,
Merry Christmas. Holy Bleep is also a good one up there.
But home alone. I can't tell you how many times
I referenced Marv's scream. Just that scream alone is got
to be in a Hall of fame of movie moments.

That Joe Peshy needing to swear but getting permission to
just sort of censor himself into nonsensical cursing because he's like,
no as an actor, like if this happened to me,
this is what I need to do. But then him
just going regel. Just nothing amazing, all of the iconic moments,
the iconic scenes. It's uh, let's see yep. It's hard

to see me in the back corner here, but if
I pop it up in that corner there, we saw
the pirate ship up there right above howdye? Right there
there's the McAllister's house, and it is one of those things.
I got a bunch of those Christmas sets and excited
to build a new one this year with Freya's help
now that she's a little bit more into it. It

(19:52):
was one of those movies kind of like The Lion
King around the same time. I think like two or
three years later. That wasn't an anything. It was just
sort of a throw away, let's see what happens movie
and super low budget and then it just exploded. Tyler
who wrote the music for this film, I don't know.

John Williams, there's a reason that it's so good, Like
Chris Columbus, John Williams, you have Joe Pesci, like this incredible.
I just watched I like me a couple of weeks ago.
I think it was actually the day it came out.
I was I was up and I saw it and went, oh,
I got to watch this. I've been looking forward to this.
The Ryan Reynolds and I can't remember who else produced

the film, the John Candy Dock and it is amazing.
Waterwork City. But talking about him just playing his instruments
because he was in a band, like he just great musician.
So him being the Poka King, uh, just all all
of that was all improv like just every bit of

it was just Candy riffing the story in the inside
the fun home, leaving his kid inside the funeral home,
which was just him is riffing, and I thought it
was an incredible man. I love this movie. It is
it is a must watch at least once during the
holiday season, which usually leads to Home Alone, to which
I love not equally, but I love that movie too.

It's still a lot of fun. We like to talk
about how unrealistic it would be for anybody to walk
away from these things without a hospital trip, which brings
me to the follow up for the For the rankings,
I have included Violent Night in the rotation. I love
that movie. If you haven't seen it, it's it's a requirement.

You have to go see this. Have you seen it yet, Tyler?

No, no, I was hoping you wouldn't ask me.

I make it a point. You have to go. You
have to go see it. And if it sweetens the
pot MGF is in the sequel, So you need to go.
You need to go catch this movie. It is totally
worth your time. It's also David Harbor so as as Santa,
So that should tell you everything you need to know
about how that movie with John Leguizama as the principal villain.

But there's moments in it that are our shout outs
to Home Alone, but more like what would actually happen
here if you get bludgeted with a weapon like this?
So I love it. It's uh, it's as high up
in the rotation as it goes. And I'll I'll sometimes
I'll just play the music because I it's it's so good.
So yeah, like a ten out of ten Christmas movie

Yeah you'll hear no no debates from me on that one.
It's top five for me, and it's not number five.
It is such a comfort watch Kevin McAllister played by
the character played by Michaulay Culkin. This film just it
brings back so many memories for me, and it has
aged just gracefully with time, truly. You you you summarize

the highlights of it so well, Brad Joe Peshy is
it's probably my favorite part of Hobolone. It's it's it's great,
the New York of it all. It's it's it's a staple.
It's a staple in this house for sure. Yeah.

Catherine O'Hara is underrated in that movie too, because she's
just sort of sort of like she's a comedic genius
and she just plays like mom so well, just so
well in that movie. She has her moments of hilarity,
like her just yelling Kevin is like it's so good,

but like, yes, the moments, her composure working with Candy
because they worked together in Second City. It's just like
watching those two together on screen was magic and it
was just so awesome. Yeah, man, I have nothing more
to add. I could talk about it forever, we could
do a whole special about it. But you know that,
I'm sure maybe this is what we do this year.

I'm sure at some point there were home alone shout
outs and wrestling matches that I'm just not thinking of
because we know how big of a fan mcullay Culkin is.
So I'm sure something happened at some point involving home
alone in a EW or WWE. And speaking of w
w E, Tyler, you already mentioned it. Ww was in Boston,
John Cena's hometown home turf. Maybe you could beat me

somewhere else, but not here. You don't have a chance,
John Cena. I don't know what you're gonna ask about,
but I imagine it's gonna be John Cena, So so

is nearing its final lap. The future Hall of Famer's
final raw appearance happens tonight in Madison Square Garden. Brad Winchester,

Made the second one, and like a middle school was
there to watch the game, and the crowd went crazy

Genda possibly you think, so BECAUSE i don't have anybody.

should be his last, match BUT i think a match
with him would be fun where seeing the squashes. Him
