Please to meetium, ma'am. And this is Colu.
Speaker 8 (07:23):

place to have Dark's overtake you, isn't it? Yes, Reverend,
But Colo and I know our way around here pretty much.
You're a stranger here about. Yes, that makes a difference, all.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
The difference between being safe and being attacked by heaven
no spots I have my motor.
Speaker 7 (07:52):
Boat would in that little cobraround there, and missus Chalmers
feel better sleeping on the land, so whenever night is
coming on, we stop at pitch camp.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
You were a trader, young man.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
No, not exactly, ma'am. I came down here originally to
capture wild animals and train them for circuit.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
Then the first thing I knew I was getting into
one adventure after another.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
I see your point. You're an adventurer.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
Well in a manner of speaking, but not the way
you mean that. I tried to right wrong, not make
me Yes.
Speaker 7 (08:18):
Yes, of course, of course there are adventurers and adventurers.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
My dear chapter.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
For instance, there was a man named Dirt Romney who
called himself hawk Ruder. Was he did get yes, and
he's dead. He died very suddenly. Well, as I was
saying this, hawk Bruder was chief of a band of
river pirates. He was the black sheep of a good
English family. You may have heard of his brother, Craig Romney,
Reverend Craig Romney.
Speaker 7 (08:41):
Yes, indeed, well known explorer died sudden, lived down here,
I believe.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yes, I buried him.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
He was murdered by his brother Dirt, and his wife
and baby were kidnapped by the pirates.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Oh, they held me.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Up as I was starting out in my canoe. I
was unable to rescue the woman because they threatened to
throw her and the baby overboard unless I surrendered.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Was at that time I had no idea who she was?
How did you find out?
Speaker 5 (09:01):
As the big war canoe came near me, I saw
the young woman put the baby's nursing bottle into the
water after the left. I got it and found the
note inside telling me her name. I say, but how
did you find her husband? I figured it out. The
woman's clothes were crisp and fresh looking, so her camp
couldn't have been far away. I noticed the direction from
which the war canoe came went that way, and soon
(09:23):
found the Romney camp.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
And the young woman's husband is dead, yes, and so
is to assist them?
Speaker 5 (09:29):
Well, I buried them and raised two wooden crosses over
the graves to mark the spot.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
I'll show you where they are, Reverend, Your people back
in England may be interested, indeed they will thank you.
I'll see the spotties I've taken back home. But how
did you know the brother had committed the crimes? Young man?
Speaker 5 (09:44):
Well, ma'am, I found Craig Rammy's diary, in which he
said there was only one man in the world.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
He feared his brother by show why this is like
a mistress story, isn't it? Mary? How did you locate
the missing brother? By accident?
Speaker 5 (09:56):
That night as I slept by my campfire, the diary
was stolen from my kit bag. In the morning, I
saw imprints of bare feet in the sand. I followed
and came upon a sprawl body.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Of the other.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
No, it was a native with his dying hands, he
managed to sprawl in the sand the statement that he
had stolen the book from Hawk Brewder, and Brewder when
he got it shot him down. Well, I figured that
book was only a vital interest to one man, to
Craig exactly. I trailed as Hawk Brewder, but got captured
by him.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
But how did you escape the brother of a native
Breuter killed in cold blood? Save this and brought us revolvers.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
When he took us to where Bruder was, Bruder made
a moved to shoot me, but my hand.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Was quicker than his. Yes, we understand. Oh, thanks Reving. Well,
Coulo and I were starting back, not.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
To come quick.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Something full out from sky.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Big silver bird was out wing.
Speaker 8 (10:52):
What does he mean?
Speaker 4 (10:52):
I don't know, man, what are you talking about cold.

hear it. Ans look look over there.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
There must be somebody in it. Come along, reverend, hopefully
I'm right, video right, video, But but where where could
it come from?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Well? That's all?
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Why not in a minute, if anyone's left alive to
tell us hurry, cold, horry, Reverend.
Speaker 9 (11:28):
I see it is some kind of an airshift and
there are three people in there. Let's get them out.
Stand back, sir, I'll break the window with my revolver.
By what whatever sort of costumes are they wearing? I
never saw anything like them?
Speaker 5 (11:41):
Never mind that, let's get them out. The girl first, right,
she's still breathing. It's not easy now easy, come on, no,
let her down here. Why we'll pull the other two outs.
Come on, hold, give me a hand.
Speaker 4 (11:53):

Speaker 9 (11:55):
Is she hurt?
Speaker 4 (11:56):

Speaker 4 (12:13):

Speaker 7 (12:17):
There?
Speaker 3 (12:19):
How all right? Take it easy?
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Oh man, everybody's all right, but you've had a nasty
crack up.
Speaker 3 (12:24):

Well, that is something that can't be decided in a hurry,

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Welcome back all say this for the series. It came
to an ending, even if it seems rather abrupt. If
you're wondering the Flash Gordon comic strip didn't end with
Flashindale crashing into Malaysia and getting married in a Jungle
Gym strip, This is very much a radio innovation. I
was doing some research on newspapers, dot com and con
(28:22):
was actually very much alive in the comic strips, and
the action was still going on on Mongo. If I
were to speculate, I do think that in the mid
nineteen thirties, the goal of hearst publications may not have
been served by science fiction serial It's hard to say
that this was a backdoor pilot for a Jungle Gym series,
(28:44):
since it was way too obvious for that. It was
a transitional mini series meant to set up jungle Gym,
with this sort of jungle story likely being seen as
a better fit for mass audiences of the era. It's
hard to argue that they were wrong, given that Jungle
Gym would run on radio for nearly two decades. As
(29:07):
Flash Gordon had been created to run as a competitor
to Buck Rogers, jungle Gym had been created to run
as a competitor to tours en in the newspapers, and
both were written by Don Moore with art by Alex Raymond.
Flash Gordon would return to radio two days later, launching
(29:29):
the further Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon, which would run
for twelve weeks. It broke free of the newspaper strip
continuity with a story following Flashindale's adventures in Atlantis. Sadly,
most of the episodes of that serial are missing, so
we can't bring that to you now. I am not
(29:50):
sure whether I'll ever end up playing Jungle Jam. That's
one of those series I do need to dig more into.
It's also a really massive undertaking, but if we do
get into it, it will be some years. Hence, although
I will say we will hear from Matt Crawley, the
actor who played Jungle Jim in these early years. Listener
