In 1925, famed con artist Victor Lustig reads that costly repairs threaten the Eiffel Tower’s future. Posing as a French official, he convinces five scrap dealers the tower will be secretly sold. One eager buyer, André Poisson, offers 70,000 francs. Doubt creeps in, but Lustig hints that a small bribe will smooth things over, and Poisson pays. Lustig disappears with the cash, leaving the tower untouched and Poisson too embarrassed to report the scam. Months later Lustig returns for a second attempt, but the police are ready, and he narrowly escapes. We might never sell a landmark, yet bold action at the right moment can still astonish us.
