Aber die Nonnen hatten einen Vertrag unterschrieben, der sagte, sie dürften "bis zum Ende ihres Lebens" bleiben.Im Pflegeheim ging es Schwester Rita sehr schlecht. In a small Austrian town, three elderly nuns escaped from their care home to break into their own convent. Sister Bernadette is 88 years old. Two years ago, Church officials took her away from Goldenstein Castle. They moved her to a care home against her will. "I have been obedient all my life, but now it's enough," she said. After 77 years in the castle, she was ready to fight back. Two other nuns went with her: Sister Regina, 86, and Sister Rita, 81. For decades, they taught children at the castle school near Salzburg, Austria. Years ago, everything changed. Church officials arrived one day and took the nuns away. Nobody asked what the sisters wanted. Two nuns were taken straight from the hospital. The Church said they were too old to live alone. They needed professional care. But the nuns had signed a contract that said they could stay "until the end of their lives." At the care home, Sister Rita was miserable. "I was always homesick," she remembered. The three nuns made a secret plan. They would go home—whatever the cost.
