ENGLISH:
Mary Luz lives in a small village in Nicaragua. Until now, she has relied on her husband for important decisions about the farm and money. Her plants are not growing well, and her husband is away looking for work. Without extra income, she cannot pay for her children’s school. One day, she hears about a group for women farmers started by the World Food Programme. She is nervous, but she decides to go to a meeting. At the meeting, Mary Luz learns how to plant seeds, care for corn and beans, and keep track of farm costs. She also learns about her rights as a woman and how to talk with her husband about important decisions. Her first harvest turns out poorly. That makes her sad, and she wants to give up. The other women encourage her to try again and share tips and new ideas to help it work. Mary Luz follows their advice, and the next harvest grows green and tall. She sells her corn and can finally buy a cow. The fresh milk helps her save money. Many women in Nicaragua are joining these programs — in just one recent project, it was around 2,100. Together, they learn to grow food, earn more, and support their families. Mary Luz now pays for her children’s school and feels proud. She learns that trying new things and working with others can bring real change — and that anyone can take a brave step forward.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
