It is Independence Day in Washington. The Sullivan family drives home sleepy and happy from the fireworks when they suddenly notice a mother duck next to a storm drain. Most drivers would keep going. The Sullivans hesitate too, but the duck’s anxious look makes them slow down. They turn around and stop at the same spot again. The duck is still motionless, so Tibi’s husband says, “Let’s just check.” Tibi gets out, looks carefully into the drain, and hears soft chirps. Four ducklings are trapped deep inside, calling for their mother. Their eight-year-old daughter exclaims excitedly, “Nothing else matters now!” Her words turn worry into action. The family drives home, quickly fetches a net, and returns. A neighbor parks his truck sideways so the street stays safe. Together they lower the net and gently lift the first duckling up.
