Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bengals at the Giants Sunday night. We'll have it for
you right here on WIMA. Of course, the Bengals and
the fan base and the team may be still in panic.
At one in four after last week's lost to the
Ravens and man Dan looked like they really were in
a great position to win that game at a ten
point lead in the fourth quarter, and it would be
(00:20):
the start of turning around the season. Instead, they get
to overtime, but then they get a gift of the
fumbled snap, but then they drop the snap on the
field goal. Just a painful, painful day for the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
No doubt, one of several unfortunately in the first five
weeks of the season. I mean, when you think about it,
fourth and sixteen with forty seconds to go at Kansas City,
if they get to stop, they win that game. If
they manage to get the snap down and execute a
field goal, which they successfully do ninety percent of the time,
they win this most recent game. So they should have
(00:58):
a much better record than they do. That's obvious. I
do think that this is bound to turn in their direction.
The offense is performing historically well, sooner or later they're
bound to start winning some of these games, and I
do think it's going to help that the teams on
the schedule going forward are not nearly as good offensively
as the ones they've faced for the most part so far.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yeah, the defense, and you've talked about it some injuries
has played a big part in why they've been so ineffective, right.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
No doubt, And thankfully the position group on defense it's
been hammered hardest by injuries, is getting healthy. They had
a couple of guys back last week, at least on
a limited basis, in Miles Murphy and McKinley Jackson. BJ
Hill was back on the field, and I think there's
a good chance that they're going to get Sheldon Rankins
back this week. So basically they're back to full strength
(01:48):
on the defensive line and that should make a huge difference.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
We're talking about Dan Horde, the voice of the Bengals.
Bengals at the Giants Sunday night, and everybody knows the
Giants really aren't very good. They did fans to beat
the Seahawks probably their best game of the year last
time out, so they're feeling a little bit better about things.
But when you think about the Giants, Dan, this is
a team that really doesn't scare you offensively.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
No, they did play their best offensive game of the
year last week. They scored twenty nine points on the
road in Seattle and that's a good defense. So they
showed they're capable of having good games. But for the season,
they averaged less than eighteen points a game. I think
they're fit from the bottom in scoring. Daniel Jones is
a very inconsistent quarterback. They've added a great weapon this
(02:34):
year in wide receiver Molik Neighbors, who is the sixth
pick in the draft. He leads the NFL in catches,
even though he did not play last week due to
a concussion. So when he's on the field, they feed
him the ball a lot. And that's going to be
a big key for the Bengals on Sunday Night, trying
to prevent him from having a huge game.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Well, Dan, I guess now for the Bengals, the job
one is to hold it together, so to speak. This
team has always been very confident and what it can do.
But even at that, when you drop to one and
four and you're finding ways to lose, it can shake
the confidence, right.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Sure it can, and it's pretty simple. At this point,
the defense has to uphold its side of the bargain.
The offense is performing well enough for the Bengals to
have a great record. They're averaging twenty eight points a
game that includes only ten in Week one, so it's
more than thirty points a game over the last four weeks.
Now it's up to the defense to play much better.
(03:29):
They don't have to be great with this offense, but
they obviously have to be better. Again, it has been
a factor that they've faced Baltimore and Washington. Those are
the top two scoring teams in the league. They face
Kansas City, so they have faced some great offensive teams
in the Browns next week are a couple of teams
that have struggled on that side of the ball. So
(03:50):
that's the form. Let the offense continue to cook and
improve at least enough on defense to start winning these games.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Dan with that in mind, than some of the guys
returning healthy, what can the Bengals be better at defensively?
What have they been talking about that's sort of holding
them back?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
You know, lou Anromo tried a lot of tinkering last week.
They blitzed forty one times in the game last week.
That was on more than half of their snaps, which
is not typically the way that lou does it, so
they've been trying to manufacture more of a pass rush.
They did successfully defend the run much better last week
until the final run of the game by Derrick Henry.
If you subtract that, I know it's not something you
(04:32):
can really do statistically, but for the sake of this argument,
let's do it. For the rest of the game. It
was about thirty carries for seventy yards for the Ravens.
So that's been the biggest problem since the start of
last year of defending the run. If they continue to
do it as well as they did this past week
until overtime, I do think that those defensive statistics in
(04:54):
the performance of the defense is going to look much
better than it has.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Well. Clearly, the Bengals offense is scoring on whoever they're playing,
but against the Giants, you got to figure that it's
going to be another strong day. They're not one of
the best defenses in the league or anything, right.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Well, it is a very good defense and it's led
by Dexter Lawrence, their nose tackle, who is the best
player in the NFL that people in the Midwest don't
know about. He's right up there with Chris Jones or
Cam Hayward or whatever great interior defensive lineman you want
to name. He's second in the NFL right now in sacks.
He's a three hundred and forty pound nose tackle who
(05:34):
has six sacts for the season and had three sacks
last week. He is a wrecking ball in the middle
of that defensive line for the Giants. So it's going
to be a huge challenge for Ted Karris. He's going
to need help from other offensive linemen, tight ends, etc.
To handle a dexter Lawrence, and if they can prevent
him from just wrecking the game, then I do think
(05:56):
that the offense should have another solid performance. It might
be tough to get thirty this week, but I certainly
think they can get enough to win well.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
The Bengals and Giants will be playing on Sunday night.
We'll have it for you right here on your home
of the Bengals and the pregame is set for seven
o'clock kickoff at eight point fifteen or so, and Dan
Horde will have the call. Dan. We appreciate you checking.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
In with us let's talk about a win next week, Todd,
how's that
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Sound, absolutely sir, thank you, you bet
