Todo cristiano tiene una lucha contra lo carnal. En las palabras de Pedro, tenemos que abstenernos de los deseos carnales. Hay deseos en nosotros que no convienen, que no fomentan lo espiritual, que no glorifican a Dios. Es precisamente a estos deseos que apela la mayoría de nuestras tentaciones. Pedro aquí nos llama a la batalla, para derrotar y someter estos deseos. Nos anima a andar como espirituales en vez de carnales. Es en este contexto que Pedro nos recuerda que somos extranjeros y peregrinos en este mundo. El extranjero en el contexto cultural de Pedro era una persona que no tenía derechos ya que no pertenecía a la ciudad donde vivía. El peregrino era uno que estaba de paso. Es importante que recordemos que no pertenecemos a este mundo. Tenemos nuestra ciudadanía en el cielo y aquí estamos sólo de paso. Pedro aquí nos insta a recordar nuestra verdadera identidad espiritual. Si pertenecemos a Dios y un día viviremos para siempre en su presencia, ¿por qué cederíamos ante los deseos carnales que desagradan a Dios y nos alejan de la comunión con Él?
