Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Paul Corvino. It's a vision president of iHeartMedia
in Los Angeles, California, with our special pre election feature
called Meet the Candidates Today. I'm here with Derek Tran,
a Democrat running for Congress in the forty fifth Congressional district.
Welcome Derek.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hi, Paul.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Hey, Before we get started, I like to do a
little quick rapid fire Q and A just to get
the brain working and the mouth going. Are you ready?
I'm ready? Okay, Winter or summer? Winter, Beatles are Stones, Beatles,
Sean Connery, O'Daniel Craig, Daniel Craig, godfather of Star Wars, godfather, celebrity.
(00:45):
People say you remind them of I've never gotten that.
Got to be making it. Make one up.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Who's that Asian guy in Barbie? I've gone that at once.
I think.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Hey, welcome, So let me ask you. Tell me a
little bit about what area does your district cover.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
So my district runs from North Fullerton, Pacentia all the
way down to include Braina Park, Los Alamedo, Cyprus, Arden Grove, Westminster,
Fountain Valley, and then a few of the La city
in the county LA County. So we have Artiesia, so
Ritos and Hawaiian gardens terrific.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
So tell me a little bit about some of your
accomplishments and why you're the right person for the job.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, good, good, good question. One of the things that's
refreshing about my campaign is that I've never ran for
office before, so this is my first time running.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
What do you do? What is your current So?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
I'm a consumer rights lawyer. I advocate for those employees
that's been discriminated, harassed and terminate the wrong at the workplace.
I take their cases from litigating to all the way
to trial. That's something I've done for a long time.
And you know, I also served in the Army Reserves,
(02:03):
very proudly. My parents were Vietnamese refugees, so growing up
I always had this sense of I need to give
back to this country for doing something for my parents,
and that was my way age.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
You grow up in Orange County, No.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
I grew up in sting abral Valley born and raised,
so Monter Park born and then lived there for quite
a while, and then the Temple City area, so I
was in.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
I raised my kids in the South past in the
nearby neighborhood, but had a lot of great dim sum
lunches in Monterey Park.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Exactly, I know it.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
So tell you, well, what drove you to politics.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
It's the sense of service for me, public service, giving back,
serving community, serving country. It's that that love that always
had that never went away when I am enlisted in
the military, and then dedicating my legal practice to you know,
representing the people truly the Davids versus Goliath. That was
always been you know, my heart's always been with the people.
(03:01):
And then you know, even as a lawyer, I was
always an active either Kwanian or rotarian, always about community
service and giving back.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
For me, what would you say the top issues in
the district and what's your plan to address these issues?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I think economy is still something that everyone's talking about,
the high cost of living, the high cost of groceries
out there, the affordability of housing, whether you're renting or
you're trying to get into your first home. The other
top issue is abortion rights. Right, This is something that
is you know, my opponent has been on the forefront
(03:37):
of making sure she gets a national ban on abortion
without any exceptions. So that's something that's resonating with my
voters out there and they want to enshrine the right
to be able to make their own decisions for their
own body.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
How would you be able to measure your success?
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Look, I want to answer to my constituents every two years.
I like every politician should in the House, and that
starts with being able to attend town forums and interviews
with the constituents. That's something my opponent has not done
at all.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
We're here with Thank you very much, Derek. First of all,
we're here with Derek Tran, Democrat running for Congress in
the forty fifth congressional district. Thank you very much for
being on the show. And this is Paul Corvino from
