Speaker 2 (00:18):
Bad news. If you're gonna have spaghetti today, your favorite
Italian origin fussili and macaroni are going to disappear from
US supermarket shows. Italy's biggest pasta exporters say that there's
a big tariff one hundred and seven percent on their
pasta brands.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
An attractive woman held, what what is it?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
The presence, what you have inside that you can bring out?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yes, the gestures? What is it that's so fiel iran
the greatest of Italian girls, if I can say that
with all due respect, But Italy's lead Italian girl, if
you will, is Georgia Maloney. She was born in Rome

(01:16):
in nineteen seventy seven and she's been politically active since
her teenage years. She was a professional journalist. At the
age of twenty nine, was elected to Parliament for the
first time, holds the record for the youngest minister in
the history of the Italian Republic, and at age thirty one,
she became Minister of Youth and as you know by now,

(01:37):
she has become the first woman in history to hold
the position as Prime Minister Georgia Maloney. And I'm looking
right now in my hand at her book just published,
Georgia Maloney. I am Georgia, my roots, my principles, and
her picture is on the cover. And you have heard

(01:59):
us play this program many times, the clip that made
her the most famous, and you heard it in that
little song there about the Italian girls.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Here it is piu son no Georgia, so nona, donna,
so Nora, Madre, so Taliana, so, no gristiana, no melo doerette,
no melotarette.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
So you're asking, what does she say there? I am Georgia,
I am a mother, I am Italian, I am a Christian,
and you're not gonna take that away from me. You're
not gonna take that away from me. Here it is
one more time, piu.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Son no Georgia, so nona, donna, so Nora, Madre, so Taliana, so,
no Cristiana, no melo doerette, no melo doerette.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
I'm a woman, I'm a Christian, I'm an Italian, I'm
a mother, and you're not gonna take that away from me.
This speech was given, according to the book, on October nineteenth,
twenty nineteen, and Piazza San Giovanni. Thousands of Italians went
to Rome and they were joining a protest. It was
an Italian Pride event, and there was in the square

(03:08):
a sea of flags waved by the brothers of Italy,
forts Italia which means strong Italy, etc. They were having
a spirited dance, and there was Georgia Maloney with Sylvio Berlusconi,
of course, the very colorful and controversial Prime Minister of Italy.
He came from the television business by the way, right

(03:30):
there by her side, and Georgia got up to speak,
as you heard, and she was talking about identity, the
identity of Italy she felt was under attack by deliberate design.
So she says, I concluded my speech with those words,
I am Georgia, I'm a woman, I'm a mother, I'm
an Italian, a Christian, and you're never going to take

(03:52):
that away from me. And she said. There was a
roar of applause from people in the square and it
was a resounding success. But she had no idea how
those words would have a lasting impact in the months
to come. There were two DJs from Milan who remixed
her words over a disco baseline and The funny part

(04:13):
is they were mocking her and satirizing her to use
her words against her, But something unexpected happened. The remix
was catchy and danceable, and it became wildly popular and
it was playing in clubs all across the country. It
even got a gold record, And so mocking her actually

(04:35):
empowered her all the way to being Prime Minister, because
people said, hey, wait a minute, I'm Italian, I'm a Christian,
I'm a mother. I like those things, and I want
to support those things, and I don't want those things
to be taken away. I'm a woman, i'm a mother,
I'm a Christian, I'm an Italian. What's wrong with that?

(04:59):
So it's kind of ironic when you hear that, Now
you'll know. And she thought about her No, no, Gianni,
how proud he would have benefit. That's her grandfather, and
she said he was a Silicilian who had moments of tenderness,
and he made Georgia and her sister Ariana compete in
a family version of The X Factor when they were young,

(05:22):
and his favorite requests of the granddaughters to sing was
always the same Parlami d'a moore maru. This is a
song from the nineteen thirties made famous by Vittorio Desitsa.
Just imagine the young granddaughter Georgia Maloney performing this song
as a kid in the family stage at special events

(05:44):
and holidays.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yokit all.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
And of course, years later the maestra from Amelia Romana,
Luciano Pavatti, performed that song and maybe a more moving passion.
How beautiful you are? More beautiful tonight, Maru, A smile
from the stars shines in your blue eyes, even if

(06:19):
tomorrow fate will be adverse. Now I'm close to you,
So why SI do not think you've lost a s
Speak to me of love, Maru. You're everything in my life.
Your beautiful eyes shine, flames of dreams flicker. Tell me
this is not an illusion. Tell me that you're everything

(06:40):
to me here in your heart. I no longer suffer.
Speak to me of love, Maru. I know you're a
beautiful and seductive siren, and I know those who look
into your blue eyes are lost. But what does it
matter if the world mocks me? So the world mocked
Georgia Maloney, at least the DJs did, but the world

(07:03):
said hell yeah. And so that song convinced her to
write the book. People were talking about her ideas and
she wanted to come forward, and the gen Z crowd said,
I am an Italian too, I am Georgia, My Roots,
my Principles. The book by Georgia Maloney is available now.
I've got it with me right here. It's Michael Patrick

(07:25):
Shields through the AT and T microphones.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
