(00:26):
Oh that's the other hot buzz,Darien is tuxedo mass. Oh and
here's the real kicker. I amthe Moon Princess me Serena, Like even
wow, Sailor Moon, You're theMoon princess from so long ago? Fight
in front of me and I didn'teven know. Yeah, who would have
(00:50):
thought that Serena, of all people, would turn out to be the Moon
Princess. It's a total blow away. Tell me about it. And one
of the jan I still can't believethat he's Tuxedo Mask All Mars. I'm
sorry you must feel terrible, butI guess they were meant to be long
before. Darren and I Welcome backto Moonstar at Sailor Moon Podcast. I'm
(01:23):
one of your hosts Alex, andthis week we'll be covering episode thirty one
of the Deek English dub of SailorMoon titled A Reluctant Princess. Before we
get into that, I just wantto take a quick second and think everybody
who was involved in the Keepers ofthe Cloud premiere. So thanks to Matt
(01:44):
for agreeing to do the show firstand foremost, and if you want to
hear the reveal of him telling methat he was the world record holder for
cardcaptor Sakura Memorabilia owned, I'd actuallydidn't know that what I approached him to
do the show, so find outorganically. And the first episode is kind
of great. Go ahead and listento the first episode of Keepers of the
(02:05):
Cloud. It's available. The firstone is on the Moonstar feed. It's
the episode prior to this, butyou're going to want to also go ahead
and subscribe to that feed so youcan keep up with that. Also,
I want to say thanks to Chrisfor agreeing to do the Chris Corner segment
or Chris's Corner. Even though it'snot grammatically correct, it's going to be
that way at the end of theshow. It was just a good way
(02:28):
to help keep us similar perspective tocertain things that we focus on here that
maybe Matt and I might not catchon our watchthroughs, so we get an
additional perspective and yeah, so I'mreally grateful to have that and we've got
a great response. You know. For those who don't know, there was
(02:49):
a live premiere on Matt's YouTube page, So if you want to find Keepers
of the Cloud on YouTube, Ibelieve he's going to live premiere each episode
and they come out bi weekly. It's every two weeks or roughly two episodes
per month. And when you're doingwhen we're doing the live premiere, him
and I might pop it in outof the chat and talk with you guys
(03:10):
so you can comment on the actualepisode while we're there. I don't know.
It was pretty cool being able todo that, and I might adopt
that here at some point. Theremight be certain episodes where we do a
live drop and you guys can chatalong with us. We'll have to see.
But that was really cool. Sogo ahead and check out all of
the Keepers of the Cloud stuff.I'm gonna go ahead and link it in
(03:32):
the episode description today. And onemore thing. Vinta Janime Video Network.
You might have noticed that there's anew audio sting at the beginning of the
shows, and that is because weare officially Vinta Janime Video Network. Now
that we have more than one show, we are a network, so that's
(03:53):
pretty exciting and we are looking tocontinue growing. If you think you have
an idea for a show that mightfit the network, I know we've mentioned
it on here before in the pasta few times, but go ahead on
over to advantage anime video dot com. There's more details there on how you
can submit your ideas to us,and yeah, we'd love to hear from
(04:14):
you and see see where things go. You never know, you might be
show number three, four whatever. All right, that's it for the intro.
Let's just get into the episode.I'll see at the end. How
(07:29):
are you doing. How's your week? It was fine, It was pretty
normal, honestly, the only worthwhilething so far. And I might even
be speaking too soon, but thenext major con here. In the first
weekend of November twin Cities con Ifound out that I would say, like
(07:53):
an eighty percent of the voice actorsthat they have, which is like the
ones, the ones that they havecoming for anime, I've interviewed like seven
of them. So I reached outto the to the people who run it
and asked if I could potentially be, Like I don't. I said,
like, I don't. I don'tknow how you guys choose this, but
like, since I've interviewed most ofthe anime people you're having this year,
(08:16):
like, I was wondering if Icould potentially be a panel moderator for any
of the panels that the voice actorshave there. So I'm waiting to see
what they say about that. Ihope they say yes. That sounds like
a really good fit for you, because you already have a little bit of
a rapport with them, and youhave a lot of experience doing interviews and
(08:37):
stuff. Yeah, so it seemslike a natural choice to me. But
who knows this. This episode won'tbe out for a couple of weeks,
so maybe we will know by thetime they're hearing this. I don't know,
yeah, because I would be goinganyway even if I wasn't picked for
that. But they're trying to havemost of as many people from Naruto as
(09:01):
they can there this time. Soit's a Yuri loewen Ball who is sask
and like a bunch of other he'salso like the voice of Ben Ten and
like he's the he's the current voiceof Spider Man, but he's mostly known
for like a ton of anime stuff. Reba Reba Burr, who I've interviewed
twice for a fire emblem, JonahScott who's in the Stars and he's also
(09:26):
a streamer, and Scathy Infinity andeighty six and series like that, and
then a lot of other people fromNaruto like Kate Higgins who she's the voice
of Soccera and she's also the voiceof Amy and in the in the modern
redub of Sailor Moon. Wow,Okay, Yeah, I think she's the
only person from oh No. Andthen Mike Michael Michael Urchak will also be
(09:50):
there, who's the current voice ofhawks Eye, and I've interviewed him,
so I think those are the onlySailor Moon people that will be there.
But they also have that's still alike all star roster, though a lot
of that other stuff is really populartoo. Yeah, and I guess they're
also they're also going to have thevoice actors for Zuko, Hang and Cora
(10:15):
from the Avatar stuff. Are youan Avatar fan? I was always like
fine with it, and then Idid I didn't watch it back then,
but I was never like, ohmy god, Avatar, Oh my gosh.
I love it so much because Ithink it hits in a really similar
way to Sailor Moon and a lotof aspects which we can get into in
a special someday. But that isanother one of my absolute favorites, and
(10:39):
I are It's funny you bring itup because I was looking at something for
it recently and I was like, well, we've got the Sailor Moon show
and the Card Captors one is startingnext. Yes. My rule is like
I have to do it for ayear before I'm allowed to at allowed to
add anything else. But then mynext one I might do is an Avatar
(11:01):
one. I absolutely love to coverthat series all the way through. But
I don't know legalities on that too, because it's a Nickelodeon show and it's
newer. You know. Well,I think just talking about it is fine.
Yeah, I would want to shareclips. Still, I don't think
I could be as like liberal withthem as I am on this old stuff,
(11:24):
but yeah, that would be kindof exciting. What else? Is
there anything else going on? Doyou have any interviews coming up? I
just did? Why I didn't justdo it? But I just dropped.
I did another another episode of eightiesmovie podcast that I appeared on, Oh
nice last year, called two DollarsLate Fee, and then we did it.
We did another episode talking all aboutthe movies of one specific actress.
(11:50):
And it's run by two voice actorsthat live in LA that are like in
their late forties. I've interviewed oneof them because one of them is in
fire Emblem. Oh cool, Sothat's always really fun to talk to them.
So that's up on. That's upon like everywhere you listening to the
podcasts and stuff now. And it'scalled two Dollars Late Fee. I love
that title. I get. Iget the reference to Can you explain it
(12:13):
to people who might not? Yeah, So it just it's a reference to
video stores back then, like ifit wasn't always two dollars, but if
you were if you were late returninga video or a DVD or whatever,
or maybe if you also didn't rewindsomething on top of it, then you
would get charged like maybe like anywherefrom twenty five cents to a couple of
(12:37):
dollars if you were late or youdidn't rewind something. Yeah, And that's
where we there was this old sloganbe kind rewind always makes me laugh because
they used to put stickers of thaton like the rental tapes and stuff to
remind people, because it's something thatif you didn't grow up using a VHS
(12:58):
you would never think about this. But like, imagine you get home,
you rented something, you're so excitedto watch it, you put it in
and then it's all the way atthe end of the movie and you have
to sit there and rewind it.And on some old VHS players, so
this is just some old technology chat. But like there's two different ways you
can rewind, or actually a couple, but there's a few speeds where you
(13:20):
just see it going backwards on thescreen, which okay, let's spoil the
whole movie in reverse, you know. Or you can hit stop and rewind,
but I think on some of thereally old ones you couldn't do that
because with the stop rewind, itwould like go faster and shut the screen
off, you know. But peoplewould even buy speed rewinders and stuff.
So it's one of those little nuisancesof that type of technology that if you
(13:43):
didn't ever use it to any significance, you would never even consider that,
you know, I love I thinkthat's such a great title. I love
that. So they can check outtwo dollars late fee wherever they get their
podcasts, and if they want tofind your episodes, what are they called
again, the episodes of oh ohlook, just search your name. I
(14:07):
guess right, Yeah, Well, the first one I did with them was
like talking about our favorite horror moviesfrom the eighties, and then the second
one that just came out was ourfavorite movies that Jill Jill Sholin was in.
So but yeah, if you justsearch my name like and too Odd
to our late feet, and theywould both come up. I don't know
(14:31):
if we're going to have room forit in today, but let's talk about
the Emily Claire Barlow interview just tolook, oh yeah, because we just
dropped that and people love when weput those out. I definitely get why,
and it's it's fun to learn allof these extra details about these voice
actors outside of the world of SailorMoon, because I would say the interview
(14:52):
is like probably thirty percent Sailor Moonand the rest is other stuff, right,
Yeah, maybe I'll maybe like, well yeah, maybe maybe like forty
percent s Other Moon than ever.Yeah, everything else. Yeah, and
uh, I never knew that shewas a musician, like classically trained in
several instruments that I also know. And she's a singer and had an album
(15:16):
that came out, I guess inthe nineties and has put out a bunch
of songs since then. I sharedher version of Over the Rainbow at the
end of the episode. Tell usabout doing that interview, What was that
experience? Like, Oh, thatwas It was fun. It was nice
to finally do it because I hadbeen trying to get in touch with her
for a while and even though herher connection wasn't very good for half of
(15:41):
it, like the audio was stillclear and then it finally came through and
got normal in the latter half. But yeah, it was nice because really,
up until then, she any anyinterview that she had done on the
internet wasn't like if Sailor Moon wasbrought up, it was just touched on,
(16:03):
like it wasn't really it was eitherabout her music career, it was
either about total Grandma. So itwas nice to, you know, get
another person from the original cast. And it's just cool that she has you
know, she's mostly known for beinga singer, so it's just it's just
cool that she has that has thatbackground. She has a really really diverse
(16:30):
career, I guess, and historyI don't know, and I love that.
Well. One of the interesting thingsthat she told us in the interview
about Sailor Moon was she connected moreto Sailor Mars, who was her original
character, than she did to SailorVenus. And I also thought the episode
she joined on, it's the onethat, according to the Internet, is
(16:52):
her first one, so I thinkthat's correct, And I also would like
checked on the credits at the endto be sure she was there, but
it had it was like a reallyimportant moment to the story. It's when
Rubis is trying to capture Rene andMars and the girls do the like planet
attack by themselves, and she sortof steps into this leader role in that
(17:14):
moment, and I was like,to have that be your first episode,
it's kind of a big order,I think, yeah, and like to
have to nail it, just likeKatie, and I think she did a
really exceptional job doing that. Whatwere some highlights that you remember it well?
It's fun the way that the episodeopened, like where I asked about
her first ever movie credit, likethis early nineties comedy with Corey Haim when
(17:41):
she was a teenager, because shehad obviously never ever talked about that with
anybody, and just the you know, just her her in depth story about
becoming involved with Sailorman for the firsttime, because I don't think that she
had really publicly set it on theinternet yet, and than her you know,
being able to tour and like bepopular enough with her music overseas to
(18:07):
play shows in Japan, and yeah, it was just do they celebrate her
as a Sailor Scout in Japan?Do you know? I don't think the
I don't think any of the originalcast has ever done like a convention in
Japan. I'm pretty sure. I'mpretty sure. I'm just I bet it's
one of those things that, likeI imagine a fan of hers in Japan,
(18:30):
it's it's one of those tidbits youfind out about someone you like for
something else and you're like, ohmy gosh, they did that. That's
awesome, you know what I mean, Like, I imagine that's kind of
the reaction she gets from the peoplewho know her for her music. There
a lot of the time that hasto be fun. And she did say
that the two of I think hertwo favorites were Total Drama and Sailor Moon.
(18:55):
Right, yeah, yeah, it'sa great interview. If you guys
haven't listened to it, go backand do it. I know, like
he said, the audio quality isa little funny in the beginning. I
did my best to try to dosomething with it. But the more I
try to improve it, the moreLIKE emphasize the clicking and the buzzing and
all of that. So I waslike, we're going to do our best
here, but it's worth listening tobecause there's a lot of really great stuff
(19:17):
in there. So I encourage everyoneto do that. And I have your
video linked in the description if theywant to watch the video version of it
as well, so they can gocheck that out. All right, let's
do the episode ready to day onSailor Moon. At last, the Imperium
Silver Crystal has been returned to thePrincess of a loan me put am I
(19:38):
strong enough or brave enough to useit to save my friends and thwart the
negavers? Stay right there and findout. So this week's title in English
is a reluctant Princess and what dowe have for the Japanese title, that's
totally opposite of Summer Turning. Memoryis a sagi and mom Or is past.
(20:03):
Yeah, it's again, it's liketelling you what's happening. In the
Deek version, I don't know ifthey do it the same way, but
this is the first time in awhile, if at all, that we've
had Serena addressed the audience directly outsideof like the Today on Sailor Moon or
the Sailor Says segments or whatever, because it starts by her just talking to
(20:23):
the audience since she was like, can you believe I'm a princess? And
like she goes into the whole thingand and does kind of a previously on
without stating that's what they're doing, you know, And then they have all
the girls go around and they basicallyare like, this is the most shocking
thing that ever happened in the historyof things that are shocking, and to
(20:45):
kind of play it up that like, we could have never predicted that this
would happen. What does what doesit open? Like? In the Japanese
version, it's pretty straightforward. Itjust takes off directly from when from when
the episode ended last time. Thenit's it just starts right away with Usagi
(21:11):
post transformation cradling Mamaru, and thenZoo Site coming up to try and attack
both of them, and then shejust casually raises the wand in the air
and repels him back until he getsknocked out. Yeah, they they added
that whole other part then. Yeah, in the deep version, it's interesting
(21:33):
because it creates a tonal difference immediately, Like when they're doing that recap,
it's like it's a combination of likekind of getting you hyped a little bit,
like fantasy adventure dreamy, you knowwhat I mean, and then it's
like heavy right after that. Sothat is a little bit odd. But
(21:55):
regarding what actually is happening in thestory here, what do you think of
the way that she uses the wand? Here, enough with all your silly
chatter, I want that imperium silvercrystal, and I'm gonna get it side
cause me comn bow. I don'tknow. In that in that first scene,
(22:25):
it's just kind of funny since Seleshe doesn't even say anything and like
or really even looks at suicide. She just raises it up and puts it
back down. Yeah, it's again, it's one of those moments where because
this episode and last were such importantmoments, I'm kind of surprised they didn't
make different choices with certain things thatwould be my moment from this episode,
(22:47):
although it doesn't bother me quite asmuch as the dress cutty choppiness from last
week. But it's it's it's notit's like a missed opportunity, you know.
Yeah, but it is an interestingthought though to if you think about
the concept of her just being like, I'm so overcome with emotion, I
(23:07):
don't even see you and kind oflike swatting her away like a fly essentially
is what she did there. Andthen after she does that, it's just
them recovering their memories, right forwell, for like, I don't know
half the episode and then the otherhalf of duck Finsite Battle. We get
a lot of negaverse stuff in thisepisode as well. Actually, but so
(23:33):
when they're going over their memories,I thought this was in the English.
It was cute and but a littlebit campy, And I will admit my
love for the show is probably skewingmy opinion that it is campy and not
cringey. Yeah, you know whatI mean. I believe if you did
(23:55):
not like the show and you sawthis moment, you would be like that
so bad? Yeah, probably, but I don't care. I still like
it and that's fine with me.But the reason being though, is there's
like a super dreamy delivery from TerryHawks when she's going through this part,
especially when she says things like,oh, Darian, you know what I
(24:15):
mean. I don't know if youcan hear it in your head, but
it's like, yes, Prince Darien, and it's very I'm delivering a line
as a princess. I am rememberingnow two. I am Princess Serena of
the Moon Kingdom, and you werea prince from Earth. One day we
were to marry. I can picturethe last time we were together, and
(24:38):
I think that was sort of theintention was for it to feel very fairy
tale Princess Serena, whereas the restof the time she's supposed to be more
of like a regular girl, youknow. But I could see how it
makes some people see that moment aslike a little less earnest. I guess
the way they did it, youknow, after they recover their memories,
(25:02):
what happens they go back to presentday and then Serena or Serenity switches back
into Sailor Moon and then faints.Tuxedo Mask also passes out, and then
Twinsite shows up and transports mom Or'sbody to another part of the Negaverse hideout.
(25:25):
And there's a moment where Mercury says, Oh, how princess like because
she fainted? And I guess that'slike a fainting princess is like a trope
or something. I thought that waskind of cute, But yeah, and
we and I liked the way thatMalacate shut up to help Zoysite retreat and
everything. Unfortunately, though, whathappens when they bring Darien to Queen Beryl.
(25:49):
She's pissed off at Zoosite for failingso much, and then she blasts
Zoosite fatally, no excellent work. The Moon Princess now has the Imperium crystal.
So what are you going to doabout it? Malachite? Oh,
(26:10):
we'll get it back, don't youworry, mc queen. After all,
she's just a young girl, reallya cry baby. You think this kid
can pull off being the Moon Princess? I very much doubt that. You
better be right. I'll give youanother chance. Now, Zoyside, please
explain your behave you're regarding Tuxedo massplease, your majesty, it was an
accident, first the elevator, thenthe ice crystal. Did you think I
(26:33):
wouldn't know? No, it's justyou've been worn for the last time.
You won't disobey me anything, QueenBeryl, Please, it's my fault I
trained her, Queen Berrow. No, let that be a warning. Malachite.
Yes. Yeah, this is oneof the more sad losses of in
(27:00):
because we had a relationship also beingbroken up or ended because of it,
essentially, if you want to thinkabout it that way. And we get
another moment with zoy Site before,so we get that later and Malakite essentially
will promise her something, but we'renot quite there yet. So after that
(27:21):
happens, after a Queen barrel Quotepunishes zoy Site, what does she do.
She contacts her ruler, Queen Metaliaask her to possess Mamroo. Yeah.
And in the English it's kind oflike do we have enough energy to
turn him to our side? Asthe way they phrase it, and we
see her trying something. I don'tthink they succeed here though, no,
(27:41):
because it's like a process. Yeah, right, And then we, like
I said, we get to seethis dying moment for Zoisite, moon Star
Sailor and podcast will be right backand now more Moonstar Sailor Moon Podcast.
(28:07):
Oh so excite. I'm so sorry. It's not fair. Queen Beryl should
have punished me for not teaching youto be more patient. I'm so sorry
I failed you hold me the onlyone who failed with me, Malakite.
You told me not to seek revenge, but I didn't listen. Promise,
(28:32):
just promise me one last thing,Malakite anything. Don't forget me. I
would never but my love. Canyou go over how it is in the
(28:53):
Japanese version, like their conversation Yeah, so, Conzitis holdings all a site
and Zoocite then like clearly expresses hislove for Kinsite, and then he asked
to be granted one one more thing, and then he says that Zoosite says
(29:14):
that he wants to die beautifully ifhe can so. Then Kinsite creates this
flower flower bed casket for Zoocite, and Zoosite thanks him before passing away.
After this scene, though, wecut back to the Scouts and Mercury is
(29:36):
trying to find a way out,and in the English She says a lot
of really smart sounding stuff, whichI will insert here because I could not
type it down fast enough, andI just put a note that I thought
they did a great job of makingher sound like a super genius, and
I still buy it today. Whichway, Mercury, I'm not quite sure,
(29:57):
you guys. It's hard to getreadings in this place. It's like
we're in another dimension, like aTimewARP thing. Yes, it's some kind
of strange combination of time warp andnegative space. And so now I have
to try to convert the radical readingsI'm getting in here into the same format
(30:18):
as the original ones that got usin here, only I'm not sure my
computer has enough memory to do allof the calculations. It was something to
do with like like conflicting energies ofnegative space or whatever, and she's trying
to scan, but she's not sureif her computer has enough memory to do
(30:41):
the thing. I'm like, oh, I was just like, oh my
gosh, you go off, Mercuryin nineteen ninety five. So I kind
of like that little, you know, micro moment, and they kind of
have to even though she just gother memories back, they still have to
explain what happened after she passed out. I guess that makes sense. She
(31:02):
was unconscious telling her that the Negaversetook tuxedo mask and she has sorted,
you know, a mini break down. And then what happens after that,
Luna and Artemis start telling all thegirls about the specific history on their past
(31:25):
lives, about how the other girlswere the guardians or like soldiers for Princess
Serenity, and when the Moon Kingdomwas attacked by the Dark Kingdom, the
Silver Crystal sealed the Dark Kingdom away. And but now that, now that
it's revived, all the girls andmodern day are reincarnations of the women on
(31:52):
the on the Moon Kingdom. Alot of it is kind of similar to
that. I think they made ita little more kid friendly and it was
a lot more like seeing I don'tknow, it's like a fairy tale time.
But I really like anytime we getto see this history or aspect of
(32:13):
the past of the Moon Kingdom, because there's something about it that sets it
apart from other, like you know, medieval kingdom settings. And I was
trying to like specify what it wasbecause it's hard to place, but I
think it's that you have a lotof the medieval themes of a kingdom and
a castle, right, But thenwhen you think of those settings, you
(32:34):
think color palette wise, a lotof dirt, so like tans, maybe
some browns, like you know whatI mean, like a lot of earthy
tones. And this place is seton the moon where it's a lot of
white silver. We've got blue forthe water, and then the sky we
have the Earth is like huge inthe sky because it would be you know,
(32:54):
yeah, so we have that aspectof being in outer space, having
the Earth as the heavenly body insteadof the moon, plus all of the
you know, moon crescents and starsand all that that they use, and
the white pillars. It's it couldhave been so lazy to you know what
I mean, how they designed it. But I feel like they've really put
a lot or Naoko or whoever designedit, put a lot of thought into
(33:16):
how they wanted it to look. And I don't know, it's just really
it's one of my favorite settings.Do you have any thoughts about it?
Just like you in the sunset. It's it's always cool to get insights into
the history or past life stuff ofany of any art that's going on,
especially as the animation got better withthe newer seasons. Yeah, and something
(33:38):
I touched on in an episode that'llbe out before this one the Kawsu Studios
Spotlight. We talked a little bitabout like the role imagination plays in being
a fan of Sailor Moon and howin the past it might have been a
little greater, but it's still definitelythere today and this specific setting of the
(34:01):
past, the princess forms what theydid in their everyday lives, how some
of them used to live on theirplanets and have their own castles and all
of that. That history is somethingthat the fandom has really played a lot
with over the years, and there'sa lot of cool stories, art,
video games about it out there. So this is kind of people will take
(34:24):
a scene like this and then pullas many details as they can and then
build from it, you know whatI mean. So this is one of
those scenes that I feel like hasbeen referenced a lot for fan creation for
sure. After this whole moment, though, Sailor Moon has a little bit
of a breakdown. What is shefeeling upset about here? She doesn't want
(34:50):
anybody else that she's friends with todie, so she says that she doesn't
want to fight anymore, and thenRay gets really angry out at during that
and then walks forward to slap Usakiand then says that Usaki is as a
(35:12):
coward and that you know, noneof them want to do this, but
at this point they have to.Yeah, And it was kind of had
like a fun mental moment with thiswith Mars because they cut the slap out.
Yeah, I figured. So theway that it happens in the English
(35:34):
is it's like Mars is walking towardsher like super aggressively, and then it
is but also giving her like atearful pep talk yeah, and then all
of a sudden you see her likeholding her clearly just slapped face. Well,
Mars is like yelled pep talking ather without yelling, but some people
(35:55):
will get this reference. My brainimmediately was like, is she gonna hit
her? From the episode in RuPaul'sDraggers. I'm sorry to keep referencing it,
but All Stars too, when Tatianasends Fifi O'Hara home and then Fife
doesn't hug her, and she's likeat the end of the stage about to
(36:15):
leave. Tatiana like fucking power walksback towards her and someone. I don't
remember if someone said it, butmy thought was, oh, my god,
is she going to hit her?And I think later someone said that
they were thinking that or something likethat. So to me, all of
a sudden, I was like,Mars is Tatiana and Sailor Moon is Fifi
(36:37):
O'Hara getting eliminated, And I'm like, my brain really needs to relax because
I'm trying to take notes right now. So I literally had to pause and
like go back because I was laughingso hard at my stupid thought. I
don't know if you know that reference, but I hope someone does and at
least finds it a little entertaining. But yeah, she's essentially feeling inadequate about
(37:01):
being a princess. How can shehandle all of this? She just wants
to be a normal person. That'sthe angle she's taking in the deep version.
I don't think she references people dyingat all. Yeah, and then
after this, what happens next?Mercury says that she found out a way
to get out of the area they'rein, and then Kinsite. Kinsite shows
(37:25):
up and pretty much each girl besidesMercury takes a turn at using one of
their attacks to attack him, buthe just does the same thing that he
did it back in the city whenthey first encountered him, or he has
a black barrier around himself and everyattack gets absorbed, and then he just
(37:45):
sends the attack back at each girl, and then Mercury is the last one.
But Mercury doesn't attack. She juststands her ground until getting knocked out
too. We see something happen herewhere ours sort of steps into the role
as Sailor Moons key protector just fora second. For anyone who might not
(38:07):
get what I'm saying, it's likeI call her the key protector because I
feel like, if you go throughthe entire series, she goes the hardest
to protect her, even more thanlike Tuxedo Mask in a lot of cases
or any other character. And eventhough they fight so much, the whole
intention of their relationship is supposed tobe they fight the hardest, but they
(38:30):
care the most. Moonstar Sailor Podcastwill be right back and now more Moonstar
a Sailor moon Podcast. Oh,hand over the crystal unless you want to
(39:05):
end up like your friends, nochoice. Fair Home Mercury, get it
out of here. M go on, you're the princess. We've got to
protect you and the imperium Silver Crystal. Get on with it, wouldn't you
fine? Mars Fine? Pathetic? What a joke. There's like this moment
(39:47):
where the other two fail and thensomething's going on in Mars is kind of
like, well, let's get ourship together and protect the princess, and
goes to attack even though she knowsit's probably not gonna work. And it's
kind of like the first little justof that that I noticed just a little
so I wanted to highlight that becauseit'll come out more later. But yeah,
after they're all knocked out, Malakitegets chased off by another. It's
(40:10):
a cosmic moon power, is whatshe's saying here. And these frames are
pretty iconic. I feel like wesee them a lot. Do you know
what I mean with can you describewhat it looks like? She does it
this time, a pink barrier ofenergy surrounds Usaki and then she gradually it
(40:30):
gradually gets bigger and then that's whatshe uses to repel back up Consite.
Yeah, and then we kind ofhave this moment of her holding it and
like we get the wind and thebig pink background that frame specifically I like,
but it's there's something about the wayit's cut out that's a little bit
(40:51):
funny, do you know what Imean? And I'll probably share it and
we post the episode, but yeah, it's it's her most epic use of
it yet. Right, We've hadsort of a one two three step up
here and we get one last momentwith Queen Beryl and she's doing something.
(41:12):
She has texedo mask in this thing. I don't know what to call it,
so I just put brainwashing bed. What do you think it is?
Yeah, I don't I don't know. It's not really that's I guess I
wouldn't really have a name. Canyou describe what it looks like? It's
this sort of like mad scientists thrownkind of thing, but in the style
(41:32):
of how everything else looks in thein the Dark Moon Kingdom, Like it's
all, I don't know, weirdand fleshy like everything else in their looks.
It almost looks like it's something youwould find in the upside Down.
Oh yeah, for Stranger Things fans, And it's like a tanning bed from
(41:53):
the upside Down. I guess yeah, and it's I think he spends some
time there for the next few episodesin and out, kind of like getting
dark treatments. I guess. Ikind of enjoy the arc we're about to
go into. It's it's a reallyunique time in the show, even though
there's like that's that's weird to me, how there's like this stuff happens that's
(42:15):
so close to the end. Butthen there's the random I mean, they're
it's not like they're bad filler episodes, but then they have the random filler
episodes like the ski resort and thelike hot spring resorts stuff I know,
and and the one with the thephotographer Bond Bond that just says Bond Bond
(42:36):
over and over again in the Japaneseversion that makes me laugh so much.
Uh yeah, And then I thinkthat is like the last one right before
the very end. I think theydid that because if they went straight from
this to the end, it wouldhave been like really a lot like all
at once. I kind of enjoythose filler episodes too, to be ones
(43:00):
is they're good Fellers. The lastscene here though, is actually my favorite
from like my favorite frames probably fromthe episode when they're standing on like the
destroyed it's called Starlight Tower in theEnglish it's Tokyo Tower, right, Yeah,
and they're looking at at what I'massuming is a sunrise. I guess
I don't know what time it is, but it's really pretty. I like
(43:22):
the way they closed the episode.Do you want to add anything about it?
I guess it goes into like therating for the episode, but I
still like this episode. I justwould give it probably half a point higher
if it had a better animator.Because the animator for this Swan was again
(43:43):
a Kira Nakamura who he only dida bunch of episodes in season one and
then he never worked on the seriesagain. And he's just very he's very
average, like he's not great, but not bad. But this very like
middle of the road. Yeah,And I'll have to say he's middle of
(44:04):
the road enough that even though Inever paid attention to the different animation directors
when I was a kid, Iremember always noticing, like I said,
like specific things about these episodes, and I was like, these are such
important moments. Why doesn't it lookbetter? Because I know they can do
it, you know, I seenthem do it, and it's a bummer,
like you were saying that it washim for both of these, because
(44:28):
story wise, there's some of themost interesting. It was just because the
episode before this was was Kazico, who was like the lead. Oh yeah,
really, yeah, they look likethe same director to me, Oh
no, you just you have tolook back over because it's like it's totally
different. Maybe I probably need to. It's been a week, so maybe
(44:49):
I should. Maybe I should goback and look. Let's do the rating.
What do you give this one threeand a half? What is that
based on? Just besides the animation. Oh, I don't. I guess
that probably is a big factor aboutit. But it does have sort of
weird pacing, But I guess that'smy uncles are my only complaints. Otherwise
it's it's fine. Yeah, Ithink I'm gonna give it probably a four
(45:15):
point five. Honestly, even thoughthe animation is very like I just I
think there are too many important momentsin this and moments that get built on
a lot in the fandom to notgive it credit for that yet. And
also I kind of use my imaginationwhen I watch it to show it up
(45:37):
a little. Okay, So justbecause I mean, I'm used to doing
that from everything you know, LikeI read a lot as a kid,
and it's part of when you readmanga, like even though there's pictures,
you still kind of use your imagination. So yeah, I kind of do
that. Plus I really enjoy thepast scenes when they we see them on
the Moon Kingdom. I just reallyreally like that, and I think having
(46:00):
it beat. Also, the episodewhereas we lose Zoy site is so important,
So there's just like too many importantfactors and I think I'm cutting them
some slack because I feel like theyhad to fit so much into these two
that it really could have been likethree episodes. Yeah, but they probably
didn't have the budget for it,so that probably is why it's not as
(46:21):
high quality as it could have been. But overall, I don't care.
I'm giving it some bonus points forcertain things. Also, I like minus
the cuts and stuff, like Ikind of enjoy some of the campiness of
the deep version. It makes itfunny a little more fun to me.
So I give it a four pointfive. Let us know what you guys
think in the comments. This isour first rating. I think that are
(46:45):
that's fairly different, like a fullstar apart maybe Yeah, one of them
for sure. Maybe there's been anotherone or two, but we're usually pretty
similar. So yeah, tell usabout that and let's get into the Sailor
says, it sounds great thing princess, but it's not just about waving around
a wand and wearing cool clothes. It means new responsibilities, just like growing
(47:07):
up. Sure, you get morefreedom and control of your life, but
that means new responsibilities too. Trytaking out the trash for your mom before
she has to nag at you,And how about cleaning up your room and
doing your homework without being told.Growing up is full of fun, new
adventures and new responsibilities. Sailor Moonsays, see ya, this week,
(47:29):
it's just about being a princess andgrowing up. And they're talking about how
growing up means taking on more responsibilities. Since it's for kids, they kind
of outline things like doing the dishes, taking out the trash, and like
household chores and stuff, but theyalso say how it's about having fun new
adventures. What do you think aboutthat as a message and a kids show?
(47:51):
Oh, very that's very fitting forthat kind of audience. Yeah,
and I think it's a great episodeto put it in on too, because
a lot of the kids are goingto be relating to Serena, and I
think that's why they had her meltdowngo down the way it did in the
English, where she was very muchjust like I cannot handle all of this
responsibility. It's too much for me. And I think that's pretty probably pretty
(48:14):
realistic for a girl her age,you know, And there isn't a ton
to say about it, really,I mean I would say it. As
a kid, I'll say this.I had to write a poem in third
grade about growing up and it wassupposed to be like what do you want
to be when you grow up?Or whatever? And I remember asking.
(48:36):
I asked my dad. I waslike, what is it like being an
adult? And he goes, well, you work really hard, you spend
all your money on things that area scam, and then you're tired all
the time. And I was like, oh, that sounds absolutely terrible.
So I wrote at a poem thatwas like I don't want to grow up
and I'm never going to basically, and you can't make me. All know.
(49:00):
It was something like we only weonly get to be kids for a
little bit, so give us abreak, like come on, which is
true, and I kind of Idon't know, Like I think growing up
is different for everybody, and ithappens in different stages for everyone, and
something that a lot of people gothrough in their twenties, at least my
(49:21):
generation did. A lot of peopleassume you're supposed to be at a certain
point by a certain age. Sowhoever you are, whatever your community is,
that looks different. If you're someonewho is raised in a religious situation,
maybe all of your friends already aremarried by the time you're twenty five
and have one or two or threechildren and a home because they're thinking some
(49:49):
of them just because they want to, but or it's an accident, but
some of them are thinking like, well, that's just what I do next,
you know, And so they're justkind of going through these steps,
but they don't have really stopped toexamine is this really what I want to
be doing? Is this really howI want to spend my as far as
we know one life that I gethere, you know, And I think
(50:12):
as we move more ahead and theway that families look continues to change and
grow, more and more people aregoing to kind of take steps away from
that, you know, And Ithink us being LGBT, we innately sort
of have an advantage in the factthat we don't have a lot of like,
oh, well I should be herenow, you know, because there's
(50:36):
not much of that for us laidout. Do you think so? Yeah?
Yeah, because if you've had tothink, like, oh, I'm
a gay man and I'm twenty five, by thirty, I should be doing
gay Like what what are all gaymen and their thirties doing? Like maybe
maybe it's happened. Maybe by nowyou kind of have some idea. I
never did, but yeah, howdo you How does growing up? I
(50:57):
don't know, it's like a weirdconcept. Yeah, I don't know.
It's just it's also very much dependenton like what timeline you grew up in,
or what what era you grew upin, because even even you and
me are different in the sense thatyou know, the ear the early to
mid two thousands for a lot,I shouldn't say a lot, but they
(51:19):
were a different time to go toschool, even when like I started going
to middle school and like I was, my sixth grade year started in two
thousand nine, so that's true.High school started in twenty twelve. Yeah,
you were I was graduated before youwere even in middle school. Yeah,
(51:40):
so yeah, And you know,I think I remember hearing some of
the changes starting probably five or sixyears after I got out, you know,
hearing about it getting better and stuff. So maybe you're right. And
I think that's just an interesting concepttoo, because I feel like this is
just how it supposed to progress. But like the generation of people before me,
(52:05):
and I'm just speaking in terms of, like I guess LGBT because that's
my frame of reference, they werefighting a lot of things that you and
I cannot even like fathom, youknow, and they were putting up with
stuff that hopefully we will never haveto deal with in our lives while we're
here. And because they fought forall of that, and they removed those
external pressures and those external dangers,or they helped reduce them for us,
(52:30):
that allowed the next generation mind topush for other things like marriage equality,
like removing don't ask, don't tellfrom the military, to make it legal
for people to serve, you know, all kinds of different things like that,
which then we removed or reduced thosestressors, which opened like room for
(52:51):
conversation about other things. And that'swhen we kind of started to see the
trans and non binary and all ofthat movement take off because it kind of
goes in stages, right, Yeah, as you remove stressors, the next
thing can be dealt with or atleast that, But unfortunately sometimes it goes
backwards too. And that's the otherthing about growing is I think if you
(53:13):
hear grow up, right, youneed to grow up, blah blah blah.
But I think most people who areolder, like let's say, like
who have lived a full on life, like they're retired, they're comfortable,
and they're like, hey, Igot like ten to twenty years left,
max, let's just do whatever.I think they would probably tell you that
it's more like a roller coaster, you know, where there are sometimes where
(53:37):
you're on an incline for a longtime and then you'll hit a peak and
then something happens and it can knockyou down. And it could be anything
from like losing a friend, abreak up, somebody dies, you hit
a depression for whatever reason. Youget like people get injured, yeah,
and it like completely throws their lifeaside, like you know what I mean.
(53:57):
Like, so yeah, I thinkthe easiest way to quote grow up
is to be ready for to justbe crazy and not at all like you
expect, right, Yeah, yeah, that's so hard to talk about.
Jeez, Sailor says, give ussomething easier next time. Thank you.
Do you want to add anything aboutthat? All right, well we'll close
(54:21):
out the episode there. I hopethat that was good at us. At
us, tell us some of yourthoughts on growing up. What was your
experience like personally as far as fromwhere you started to where you are now.
Maybe tell us what you want yourexperience to look like going forward,
because no one's done growing up.We never stop until we die. I
guess at least that's how it feels. So how do you want to grow
(54:45):
in the next five years? Thinkabout that? You know, Yeah,
give yourselves a plan. And justa reminder to you guys. Check out
Chris on some of the other podcastshe's been guesting on. I know there
were a couple. Can you justremind them all one more? Yeah,
So, the one that we weretalking about earlier in this episode is two
dollars late fee, and then theone that we talked about most recently before
(55:07):
this is a queer Insight. Yeah, and I'll try to get links in
the description. I think you canyou've sent me or you can send me
both. Yea, yeah, allright, that's it. I'll see you
next time. That's it for thisweek's episode of Moonstar, a Sailor Moon
(55:35):
podcast. If you like what youheard today and want to support the show,
we have a couple of exciting announcementsgoing live soon on moonstarpod dot com.
We will be accepting more sponsors. You've heard already from Sailor Moon Video,
the first official sponsor of the show. But if there is anyone else
out there who has a business oran item or a show to produce or
(56:00):
promote or whatever you call it,you can reach out to us via or
become a sponsor section on moonstarpod dotcom. And we also have very very
low cost tiers for individuals who wantto sponsor the show just because they like
it, and I believe the lowestone is literally a dollar a month,
and it gets you added onto oursponsor section of the website just under the
(56:25):
list part of it. Visually, and however you want to be represented,
so your Twitter handle, your Instagramhandle, whatever. For a dollar a
month, you can do that andknow that you're supporting your favorite show.
So that'll be going live soon, and that's on moonstarpod dot com. Scroll
all the way to the bottom andlook for the sponsors links. Second,
(56:47):
one of the easiest ways to supportany of your favorite podcasts or YouTube videos
is to actually let the ads playthrough. You don't really have to pay
attention to them, and they're notthat long, so it's really not that
much, but it's one of thefew things you can do to both show
(57:07):
advertisers that you're supported the show enoughor you're interested enough to listen to quote
listen to their ads, but itactually directly gives us more back. So
it's not a lot, but youknow, it's like throwing a few.
It's like you know, tipping ata show. Basically, if you listen
to all of the ads on Ifyou would go ahead and listen to all
(57:29):
the ads on a show, Christimomight both walk away with like a couple
of coins, you know, atthe end of that episode at the most.
But we appreciate it, and it'sit's one of those things that the
algorithm will notice and pick up onand start to the show will start to
pop up on people's recommended things more, you know, so go ahead and
(57:50):
do that. Additionally, Spreaker spr e a k e R. That's
the podcast hosting service we use hereat Jenim Video Network. They are currently
having a promotion where if you listento the show either through the Spreaker app,
you can get that on any smartphoneor the website or an embed from
(58:12):
their website. So we're going tobe adding some of those to the moonstarpod
dot com page. We actually getan additional ten percent return on that,
so it doesn't take much to justdownload that app if you want to.
It's not I mean, I getwanting to just stick to your own thing,
but go ahead and try that,or you know, don't, but
it's fine. Spreaker spr e ak e R. That's the easiest way
(58:38):
you hear, one of the easiestways you can throw ten percent more moon
power back at us. So thinkabout doing that maybe. And then finally,
personally, I think Chris would probablyagree. What means the most to
us is a five star review.Go ahead and give us a reason why
you love the show if you havethe time, and we might actually read
it. But you can always justrate an episode US five stars and you
(59:00):
don't even have to type anything, and that will still add to you know,
our growing reputation. I guess Idon't know whatever you want to call
it. So that is a probablythe easiest way you can help us out.
That's it for now, let's getinto the plugs. For more of
