(00:32):
meat Ball Ahead, it might getstuck that way. There are where are
you? I never thought i'd missyou calling me mint Ball Ahead? Here's
that beauty salon. Add if Ichop him off, no one I'll ever
call me that again. Hey there, girlfriend, what's up? Nina?
(00:53):
How did you get in here?Mother? She was just going out to
buy some ice cream for you.Hey, I got an idea. It's
really fun. Come on, youneed a serious change of pace here.
(01:15):
Welcome back to Moonstar A Sailor MoonPodcast. Brief apologies for our absence during
August, but as you listen tothe next couple of episodes, that will
sort of be addressed. So ratherthan talk about it a whole lot here,
I'm just gonna let you experience ithas it sort of happened in not
real time, but real time foryou. And the good news is that
(01:36):
the minor slump we were in thatcaused this delay is over. So you
know, that kind of is evidencethat really all things just kind of need
a little bit a little bit oftime and things will move ahead. Right.
So here we are with a newepisode of Moonstar called Bad Hair Day
Love this one, and it's funnybecause you'll actually hear the beginnings of kind
(02:00):
of both myself and Chris dipping downinto I don't know what to really call
it, but like there's lower energyin this episode in general. And it
also just so happens that it isthe first episode we really get where Serena
or Usagi is super depressed about something. We've had the depression thing with Molly
(02:23):
before, but it's never really beenfocused on our main character heavily, and
so I just thought it was interestingthat, again, all things sort of
line up randomly on this show, never intentionally, and it just so happened
that we hit a depression at thesame time as our girl, Serena.
(02:44):
I don't know what to tell you, but we're back and we're kicking in
October. I'm so excited for thismonth. We've got several episodes just I
think six are coming out total basedon just the way our schedule drops.
And then even though this one's aday late, but whatever, and then
we do, you know, ourannual Halloween episode so that's exciting and just
(03:05):
something to look forward to. Oncewe get closer to the end of season
one, we're going to be havinga Moonstar round table special where we discuss
favorite moments in season one specifically, and the whole round table will also discuss
the final two episodes a little bitbefore we get to them, because they
are probably some of the most importantepisodes across the board in the fandom,
(03:29):
and I know that, and they'realso if I would be lying if I
said they weren't the two most importantepisodes to meet out of the entire anime
as well. So that'll be afun discussion for you guys to be a
part of and listening on, andyou'll recognize some names that have been on
the show before. There's going tobe some new names, so you can
get excited for that. But withoutmuch else to discuss here at the top,
(03:53):
let's just get into it and I'llsee you at the end. Bye.
(04:14):
Yeah. I have a little lowenergy today, probably too, but
I'm glad that this is the episodewe're covering because it's actually a really great
one. But this is at thetime when my cat passed away last year,
so I've been feeling a little bit, you know, blah the last
week in general, and then todaynot having electricity and being hot. It's
(04:35):
just like extra gross, you know. Yeah, but this episode I forgot
like the details of it, andthen paying attention to the animation. There's
a lot of interesting things to kindof dig into. And then also I
happened to cut all my hair offright before we covered this one, so
(04:59):
random timing. It just so happensto line up that we're doing the haircut
episoda right after I got like, you know, I don't know how many
inches off, probably more more thanten. Yeah, I went back to
like, short, short, Buthow's your week been. It's been fine,
pretty pretty normal, nothing but interestinggoing on. No, how's the
(05:26):
weather up there? It's been okay, it's this week, it's been between
like the high seventies and high eighties. High eighties in Minnesota's kind of tough
though, because you guys don't doair conditioning, right, No, we
do, you do. I remembervisiting and no one had it, and
everyone acted like I was crazy becauseI was there in the summer and I
(05:49):
was like, why don't you haveair conditioning? And they're like, this
has been Annesota, what's wrong withyou? And I was like, Oh,
I don't know. I guess I'mnuts for not wanting to be in
a house that's yeah, ninety degrees, but I'm I'm glad you have air
conditioning. Then have you had anyinterviews? No, I've just been a
(06:09):
planet like planning ones, but Ihaven't done the other ones since my milestones,
like earlier or late last month.I think it's all right to take
a little break after those though, because they were such like special you had
two in a row that were prettybig. In that case, then let's
(06:30):
talk a little bit about Oh Ijust had it and I lost it.
Hold on, it was like afandom thing. What did I want to
talk about today? Oh? Sothe episode that is by the time this
airs, it'll have been a fewweeks. But at the time of recording,
the current live or newest episode isthe creators Spotlight with Kowseu Studios.
(06:57):
And I thought it went great.I don't know if you had a chance
to listen to it or not.I did a little bit. Yeah,
But she's a really fun creator andshe has a whole team that works with
her of different artists and video editorsand storyboard artists and all kinds of people,
and it sounds like they've been prettysolid for a long time, so
(07:20):
we might have a few more ofthem come through and do spots on the
show in the future and all ofthat. But then also I was thinking
about, because we're coming up towardsthe end of season one, we could
do like a season one roundup episodewhere we bring back like Rhett, I
(07:41):
could ask how to be part ofit and kind of do like a round
table where we just highlights some ofthe best moments from this season. What
do you think about that? Yeah, that's a good idea. Do you
think Ratt would be up for that? Yeah? Okay, cool, that
would be awesome. When is yourbirthday again? That's coming up pretty soon.
(08:01):
It's it's August fifth. I wasgonna say, you've been twenty five
for a little time. You shouldbe twenty six again soon. Your birthday
is on August fifth. Wow,that's that's actually my mom's birthday. Oh
okay, kind of funny. Yeah, uh, I have a lot of
that happened. A lot of likepeople I meet neither match mine or my
(08:24):
mom or my dad or something.Yeah, that's weird. All right,
let's see what about you. Haveyou ever been involved with anybody who was
into the into the show at all? Oh? Yeah, I mean well,
yeah, like the one single Xthat I've had, they were they
were a big anime person. Theyweren't like I don't think they had really
(08:46):
seen much of Sailor Moon, butlike they had seen a little bit of
it, and like they were awareof it and like knew that I was
really into it. And there's beena handful of guys that I've like that
I'm still friends with or hooked upwith or whatever that you know, like
we're big anime people, not leastwashed it at some point in their life.
(09:11):
Yeah, It's one of those thingsthat it's like I've had a person
that I was with before where againit's like they like anime, but not
this. Yeah, and then Iintroduced them to it, and you know
how it is in relationships like that, it's kind of like for them that
it's tied to you, you knowwhat I mean, Like that happened to
me with Doctor Who. Have youever seen that? Yeah, I'm just
(09:31):
I've never been like into it,but yeah, it's a show that I
think I would have loved if Ihadn't been shown it by an X,
do you know what I mean? But because I that was like the thing.
Now every time I watch it,I'm just like, oh, fuck
off, you know, like Iwish you the best would go away.
But yeah, it's one of thosethings we should let's start by talking.
(09:56):
I put in the question later, but I kind of want to know is
this an ETO episode? The nextone is okay because this one was pretty
had some really nice moments though withthe animation. Yeah, are you ready
to get into it? Yeah, today's a real bad hair day on Sailor
Moon, when what we thought wasa free haircut turns into an all out
(10:20):
fight against a scissor snipping monster fromthe Nigga Force. Then Tuxedo Mask shows
up. Is he with us oragainst us? Just stay right there and
I'll show you. Okay, ourEnglish title is bad hair Day, because
of course it is. I don'tknow what else they would have called this.
What is the Japanese title? It'sUsagi's confusion. Is Tuxedo Mask Evil?
(10:48):
Yeah, which it's it's kind oflike what happens today, But also
it's a little bit less because wekind of knew already that that's what was
going on, and actually it tellsyou, like almost enough think about the
theme of the episode for once, which is a little unusual for them.
This is episode number thirty two forThe Deek and thirty six for Japanese or
(11:11):
original, And what is the firstthing we see today? It's Usagi having
a bad dream about life, andthen she's talking in her sleep about the
same thing, and then she's likecrying in her sleep, and then Luna
wakes up as a result of that, and then just observes what's going on.
(11:35):
And then Usagi rolls over and herarm kind of pats Luna down so
Luna can't move. Oh day,oh kid, she's been dreaming about dairy
and again she'll never get anything outof my face. Nigga, No,
(12:00):
it took you to mask on sucha free again, promise, oh,
such a free what about me?It's going to be a long night?
Looks like beautifully. I love thisscene as an intro because anytime we get
(12:22):
to see Serena's room is kind ofa treat, and they always saw it,
and I feel like they spend alittle extra time making sure it just
looks especially cute and detailed and stufflike down to the blanket and how it's
on the bed and everything. Inthe Japanese version, does Luna talk about
(12:43):
like feeling bad for her because she's, you know, upset about all of
this, or is she just kindof like observing? Nah, she says
the same thing. Okay, soit keeps it the same. It cuts
over to school and is really tired, which kind of reminds me of a
throwback to the first couple of episodeswhen she would show up at school and
(13:05):
be like, you know, reallytired from fighting crime all night the night
before. And we get this momentwith Molly where she's telling her about the
something but the haircut place, likeI think they're having a sale or it's
new or something. I'm not surewhich, but she says, get rid
of those two meatballs on your head. The whole meatball head thing. I'm
(13:28):
like, I don't even think Ithought it was that funny as a kid,
Yeah, And as an adult,I'm like, I think I wish
they would have said donuts. There'ssomething else because there's some meatballs. It's
like it's not an adorable word.Yeah. Anyway, so there was that
like cringey nickname. I'll give it. I love the nineties version, but
(13:48):
I have to conceive that I don'tlove that choice. But they also do
a weird deek moment here where theyshow they slow down her blinking for some
reason. And the reason I couldtell is because the like video quality randomly
goes completely weird, and but alsobecause it's slower. But I was just
(14:11):
like, why did he get reallypixelated for some reason? And I was
like, oh, it's slow mo. They're repeating this clip. What happens
with the conversation here? What's goingon? Because they messed this one up
a little. It's which is Ithink that's weird because it's just Nuru coming
(14:31):
in with the magazine talking about howa woman a hairstylist dot won awards around
the world for how good of ahairstylish she is is coming to the area
and doing free hairshit to anybody thatwants it, as of like just to
(14:54):
celebrate the award, and then theySaggy just doesn't say anything. Obviously.
I think they downplayed the hairstylist charactera lot for some reason, and they
put some I can't even remember whatwas in the deep clips I'll have to
screen cap it, but it wassome random shots of her from before,
(15:15):
I guess, showing her hair whenMolly said like meat ball head and it's
like to show the kids that they'retalking about her hair or something like that.
I think they were literally like coming. I don't know if you've ever
heard this idea when you're writing, but sometimes you're supposed to act like your
audience doesn't know anything. Does thatmake sense? And I'm like, I
(15:37):
think they took that a little literallythere, but it's a weird moment.
I don't know why they chopped itlike that. But we cut back to
Luna talking with the girls and Artemisabout the state of Serena, and they
did the same thing here. Theyput another like Deek nineties weird clip show
(16:00):
moment. But what's going on duringthis part? She's telling them about like
how Osaki is feeling, and thenthere's this like nice scene and like a
scene within that scene with with Raytalking about that she knows how Usagi feels
(16:29):
feels, and then Makoto seems tobe asked you either, oh, can
you hear me? Makoo seems tobe who seems to be the only one
that realizes that Ray is talking aboutbeing in love with Mamru herself, and
then like Ray has this introspective littlemoment where she's just thinking about how she
(16:56):
feels the same way that Usagi doesin relation to her romantic feelings about Amaru.
I kind of thought it might besomething about that, because they like
sort of let her have a moment, but it's very subtle. She never
directly says anything about it. Andthen they do that weird clip thing again,
(17:18):
so I knew they were like cuttingsomething out. I'm guessing they're like
not wanting to play with the ideaof a friend like two friends dating the
same person too much for some reason, it has to be something like that.
But I'm curious because it can't becompletely ignored, right, Like,
(17:38):
there's gotta be I don't know. We'll have to see how the rest of
this unfolds. I'm curious why theymade that choice, And is this the
first time they've addressed this since wefound everything out? Yeah, I don't
think it was like explicitly said likethat Ray well involved with Mamru with like
(18:02):
an the topic of conversation. Ohokay, Well, after that we cut
back to Serena in her room againand she's depressed listening to the star locket.
And I just thought this scene wasvery like to me. It gave
me intensely nineties early two thousands teenagervibe in a great way. Just the
idea of sitting in a room withnothing on around you but some weird sad
(18:26):
thing and like thinking that the worldis over because like I don't know,
some random person from your art classlike doesn't like you back or whatever,
you know what I mean, Likejust like stuff that will never matter in
the future, but in the moment, it literally feels like the absolute most
important thing ever, right, SoI love that that feeling. I don't
(18:51):
know, did you connect to thisas like in any way? Yeah,
And I think that's something that everybodydoes and like that multiple times in their
life. So yeah, just likea moment of heavy emotion for sure.
And this is the first episode wherewe get to see Mina and Serena doing
anything really one on one together,And we also get to see Serena or
(19:15):
Osagie's hair out of the Odangos themeatball hair style for the first time,
unless you count the use of theLuna pan, which I kind of don't
because it's like it's magic, youknow. Also her hair. The first
time I saw this, I waslike, oh my gosh, her hair
is very long and there's so muchLike for some reason, it really caught
(19:37):
me off guard. Did you evernotice that? Not really, Maybe you
were just like, yeah, herpigtails are long, so of course her
hair is long. But today, for some reason, it really I just
remember every time. Even now,I'm like, there's so much. It's
like Rapunzel, moon Star, aSaana Moon podcast. We'll return after these
messages and now more moon stuff,I say, the Moon Podcast. Okay,
(20:18):
girl, it's makeover time. Let'sdo something way cool with your hair.
We'll give you a whole new styleand you can pretend you're somebody completely
different from a totally different time, totally different part of the world. Sounds
good, doesn't it. The bestpart of a makeover is having someone to
pamper you and make you feel special. Don't you think maybe I should change
(20:41):
my hair? I mean cruel andthen oh, I always remember the design
of the hair Monster's human form forsome reason, which I guess makes more
sense now because I even wrote Ifeel like she reminds me of a famous
person, but I don't know whowell, because she's supposed to be a
famous person in the show, butthey cut that out, so it does
(21:06):
kind of make sense. What doyou think of her design? You mean
the monster or like as the human? Can you describe how she looks?
Oh? Yeah, she just Idon't know. She looks like a like
a probably in her late thirties orsomething, attractive woman with a short black
(21:32):
hair. She's dressed in a thislike lavender skirt body suit. She reminds
me of some people might know thisreference Tabitha Coffee from Tabitha Salon Takeover.
It's a Bravo show that she wasoriginally on. It's like they had It's
basically think about like RuPaul's Drag Race, but for hair stylists. She was
(21:56):
on a show like that and thengot her own spinoff. But she was
like the really intense lady who wasgreat at doing hair and was very direct
and a little bit rude and hada ball like I don't know what's a
pixie cut, right, she hadthis pixie cut. Only if her hair
were darker it would be this lady. I think that's what I was feeling
from her for some reason, shedoes look kind of like a classic hair
(22:18):
stylist, though I don't know why. And then we cut over to the
Negaverse, and this is where Ifirst noted something about the animation. I
thought the shading looked a lot differenthere, and Queen Beryl and Malakite looked
kind of more angular or something ormore evil. I wasn't sure. But
who is the animator? It's anotherepisode that Kyoshi Matsumoto did. Who I
(22:45):
think he mainly only worked in Susanone, but OUT have to check his
credits again, but he did likeraise debut episode. So yeah, when
we were on the Negaverse, itwas like I couldn't decide if I liked
it or not, do you knowwhat I mean? Yeah, because I
was like it was so different thatI was like, this is kind of
(23:06):
cool, but I'm so used toit not being like this that my brain
like doesn't know what to do.But then we get to other parts of
the episode that are done so wellthat I kind of like, I'm like,
that's fine. Where does he rankin like the tier list? Would
you say? I don't think.I mean, he's definitely not one that
people know off the top of ourhead, like by name, but I
(23:33):
don't know. He's definitely in themiddle, I think overall for most people,
but more towards the good than badside of the middle. Yeah,
I would say he's like above averagefor sure, because I also thought this
episode presented some unique animation challenges too, like when it comes to dealing with
(23:55):
hair and and how it's styled andwashed and everything, and then the scanning
and everything. But this printed page, Oh what does Malakite reveal that he's
obtained to Queen Beryl And why isit so important? It's a strand of
(24:18):
Usagi's hair, or well, astrand of Sailor Moon's hair, and he
was going to use that at thesalon to figure out who who the DNA
like winds up to from all thegirls that are attending. Right, how
(24:40):
did he get the hair? Again, I think it while I would have
obviously been from the the battle fromthe last episodes something like that. Okay,
so he actually does have a strandof her hair. Yeah, okay,
so that explains something for later.Anyway, I love the way they
(25:00):
animate the hair salon experience altogether, and I thought this would be a fun
chance to talk about going to getyour hair cut and going to the hair
salon in general. Do you haveany opinions on that, because you actually
it looks to me like from yourstyle of hair, you would have to
put some work into it. Iactually, I actually dovid like, I've
(25:22):
only gotten my hair cut there maybelike three times in the past three years,
so and because it's I always getsuch a little little cut off that
I just I'm able to do itat home. Oh you do it yourself.
Oh wow, that was saved.I don't blame you, because it's
(25:45):
sort of an ordeal going in andthat's kind of why I mind gets so
long and ridiculous after a while. But I just like there's something about having
to sit in the chair and thenhave the conversation or not, which is
all. The person who cut myhair actually this time though, didn't speak
English, which was an accident becauseI just kind of looked up the highest
(26:07):
braided hair salon in my air andit it was like a Spanish hair salon.
But by the time I was there, I was like, we're going
to just do this. But Iguess because of that, since he didn't
talk to me at all, hefocused on my hair like the entire time,
and was so precise with it thatI'm like, oh, well,
this is like the best hair cutI've ever had in my life though,
(26:27):
ye so, but yeah, Ijust I don't know, having to do
the typical banter as kind of drainingto me. Although I do love when
they washed your hair. Do youenjoy that part? I've never had that
done, so really yeah? Okay, Well for people who may also not
have ever had that done, thepart that's not great is like putting your
(26:49):
neck in that weird sink thing, because no matter how much they put a
towel there to pat it or whatever, there's just something awkward about like laying
your neck on anything, you know, but they have they're something about the
like hose they use. It's alwaysreally high pressured and usually the temperature is
(27:10):
like pretty warm and pretty good. And then most hairstylets have like long nails,
so they're going through and giving youa scalp massage and all this stuff
while they're washing your hair, andit's just like, I have a theory
that that's fifty to seventy five percentof the reason why most ladies go and
the rest is just a bonus.Yeah, I don't know. I love
(27:34):
the vibe of a hair salon,I don't like the chatter, and I
don't like being stuck there for along time either. Let us know how
you guys feel about it. I'msure there's a lot of different opinions.
Some people probably hate getting their haircut, some people probably love it.
I don't think I would go tothis salon though, because I don't know
about you, but I'm not tryingto get attacked while I'm having my hair
(27:56):
done. I also thought it wasinteresting that originally only Serena was going to
do something. I mean, itwas like, no, I'm good,
because like when you go with yourfriend to do an activity, don't you
want them to participate with you.Yeah, but I mean I don't know.
Maybe I'm not a girl, somaybe I don't know enough about that.
Can you describe what this? What'sgoing on here at the salon?
(28:17):
What is our scene? Like?Yeah, it's it's just a bunch of
random girls from Usagi's school that aregetting their hirt on. And any time
that a girl that they suspect tobe Sailor Moon, they analyze it with
(28:38):
some kind of machine and then theythink that Minako is Sailor Moon because they
use it on her, and thenthey a Curry Go, which is the
name of the hairstylist, attacks andaccuses me Naco, and then Saga doesn't
(29:07):
realize it until after it's already goingon. Did this drive you crazy?
Ever? Then the way that Okay, so this is supposedly what happens.
They had a real strand of SailorMoon's hair, which means, and they
show this happening when like Mina isbrushing Serena's hair earlier or something, but
it's like, supposedly what happens isa strand of Serena's hair got onto Mina's
(29:33):
brush, which then transferred to herhair, and then when her head was
in the scanner thing, it's somehowonly scanned that one piece of hair but
not everything else on her head,And like, I just I could not
understand how they couldn't figure out that, like, maybe this is Sailor Moon's
(29:56):
hair, but why does none ofthe other hair on this girl's head?
Mas, do you know what I'msaying? Yeah, that used to that
steale to me right now is evena little bit just like what the heck?
But that's just me. I don'tknow. Other people probably don't care
about that stuff as much. Ifyou do, please tell me, I
will feel less alone. But younever noticed that or thought about that,
(30:19):
not really, I guess because Iwas thinking. I'm like, you know
how many thousands of strands of hairwe each have on our own head.
I'm like, first of all, what are the likelihood that it picked up
only that? Anyway, That's onething about it that kind of bothered me.
But something that is really great aboutthis scene is the interesting how the
(30:40):
other salon ladies just walk in sprayingthis like purple hair spray when they think
they figured it out. I thoughtthat was kind of fun. And then,
like you said, she's trying toforce her to transform and everything.
Speaking of transforming, though, canyou describe how we get the hairstylist from
human to monster? Yeah, it'smore it's interesting in this case because all
(31:04):
of the other assistants they start rapidlyspinning around her, and then that's how
that's that's also how she turns intothe monster. Yeah, and I'm sure
you saw this, but it doesa spiral effect around her after they spin.
That's red, white, and blue, right, Yeah, And it's
(31:26):
done in this most people might seethat. Who actually, I think most
people will know that that's the barbercolors. But in case people don't,
the old barber like, I don'tknow what you call it, but the
thing that signified the shop had thatpattern on it, and it would be
like a poll I think, outsidethe store and just spin all day,
and that's how you knew where thebarber shop was. So that's why they
(31:48):
went with the colors and the spiralpattern and everything. And I thought that
was a fun choice and they animatedit very well, didn't you think.
Yeah, he described the design ofthe monster. Yeah, it's kind of
jarring for a monster that would bebased off of hair Salon and sailor Moon
that doesn't doesn't really look anything likethat. It's a it's all brown,
(32:13):
like the like the predominant color isbrown, and she's buff and doesn't even
appear to be a female besides thevoice and the hair is erratic and also
brown and sticking in different directions andsort of in the same way that the
(32:34):
game Crane Joe Monster has. Shecan change out her her arms two different
weapons. Yes, it's kind ofa MegaMan, right, Yeah, And
I noticed that I don't like thedesign of this monster itself very much.
(32:54):
Yeah, it's it could have beena lot better. I think one note
I liked is that the pigtails likethat stick out funny. It took me
a while, but I think theymove sometimes with her, and they're supposed
to be imitating the shape of scissors, right, So I mean at least
they have that kind of like thoughtput into it. And then she has
(33:15):
rollers in her hair. It's likethere's those little details. But it's a
really unattractive monster. And like I'mnot I don't need the monsters to be
attractive. But when I say unattractivemonster, I mean it's like not even
cool. It's not even scary,Like it's just kind of like, you
know, So I would say themonster is a little bit of a flop
(33:37):
this week. How do you feelabout it? Yeah, it's okay.
I mean the best thing about itwere the attack scenes. The attack scenes
are are well done, and Ithink it would probably like if it wasn't
supposed to be based on a hairsalon and that lady, it might hit
a little differently too, you knowwhat I mean. It's it's probably the
(34:00):
connection not linking up so well. But oh, I need to ask you
this. Why do we see afterSailor Moon transforms and everything, which I
like how we saw her get intoit with her hair still down and wet
and everything, But why do wesee a slug behind her later? Oh,
that's a that's a Japanese reference thing. I would have to like double.
(34:22):
I don't remember exactly what the wordingwas, but yeah, I don't.
Maybe it says on the on thewiki page for the episode, is
it? I mean, is itlike a reference that they made at that
moment though it has to be right. Yeah, I think it was just
because she said that she was crawling, because I don't know if it was
(34:44):
this or not, but because shewas saying that Usagi was crawling around like
and taking so long to show themselveslike a snail. Maybe I don't.
I don't remember exactly. Yeah,I figured it was something like that because
then the deek it was literally theylike, she says something like I'm going
to beat you now, and thenthere's just a slug, and you're like,
(35:04):
what, why is there a slughere? Yeah? So I thought
that was a little weird. Moonstara Sailor Moon podcast. We'll return after
these messages and now more Moonstar aSailor Moon podcast. There you are,
(35:29):
I'll come get you when it's done. Hmm. Finally a match, So
(36:04):
Blondie here is Sailor move o works? Do you have to run so hard?
Queen Barrel will be thrilled? TheImperium silver Crystal is going to be
mine. Battle itself goes down inkind of a strange way, don't you
think? I think it's good? But the like, well, let's kind
(36:25):
of break it down. How doesit start? It starts with the first
weapon, if you want to callit that as the that's a high powered
hair dryer that erodes anything that ittouches. Yeah, I mean, as
far as weapons go, it's kindof scary, I guess. And also
(36:51):
Sailor Moon is fighting alone to start, and she doesn't seem to be doing
very well. We'll say that, right mh. She tries at some point
during this to use mon healing activationand I always love when she has a
moment of like pointing her wand atsomeone or something like that. Yeah,
(37:13):
so we have that kind of outsideof the stock footage. But something happens
that stops her. What is thatMamoru her toxedo mask throws a throws the
signature rose. Yeah. And thisis sort of like the first time because
(37:37):
his I guess his allegiance was questionablebefore they weren't really sure what was going
on with him. Then they hadall of this stuff get revealed, and
then immediately he is on the otherside. Is the dialogue very straightforward with
him and then yeah, okay, because it's pretty much the same thing in
(37:58):
English, He's just like, I'mevil now and I'm not your friend.
So that's basically what happens here. And what is he demanding from her the
same thing that the Dark Moon Kingdomwants as the Silver Crystal, Yeah,
which is the source of her power, and they you know, of course
(38:22):
want to use that for themselves toI don't even know what. But and
Nna was there to observe everything, and she was not transformed because she was
sort of knocked out by this hairspray from earlier, so she sees this
all go down and then we getto see her transform here and then it
cuts to them because the monster chasesSailor Moon outside and we get I noted
(38:45):
some really great beautiful tokyos like landscapeimages. Did you notice those? Yeah?
I thought they were so good. That was one of my highlights from
the episode was the landscaping. Itwas especially well done. I don't know
if that's what you call it inanimation, but that's what it is.
(39:07):
So for a minute, we haveSailor Moon versus this monster in tuxedo mask,
just like one versus two. Butthen what happens. All the other
girls show up and Ray and OrMars and Jupiter combine both their attacks to
through this lightning fire thing that destroysthe weapon changer item on the monster's arm,
(39:37):
and then Mercury shrouds their vision byusing the bubble spray attack. Yes,
and then we get this Moon healingactivation thing that I guess turns this
monster just back into the lady, right huh oh, into all of them.
(39:59):
I will little unclear how they endedup being monsters. What do you
mean, like, did something happenthat made them because you know what the
Rainbow Crystal Warriors, it's like theirmonsters that can be healed back into humans
because they're reborn and all that. Why is this lady like a healable target?
(40:19):
Well that's I mean, are theychanging people into monsters. Now,
Yeah, that's I don't think.I don't think that really ever stopped happening
in season one. So because Igotta I gotta go, I feel like
that might just be me, ButI feel like there's some a little bit
of a like I might have missedit, but there's some kind of a
(40:42):
plot hole there where it's like,I understand why the rainbow crystal thing worked
because they were reborn with these crystalsin them. That is really their true
identity as a monster. But Ididn't see anybody target this like hairstylist lady
in this episode to make or evil. Does that make sense? Yeah,
So I'm just like, did youjust show up in town and was evil?
(41:04):
It's just happened to need it tobe healed. Like that's where I'm
getting lost with her. I guessI'm just curious. I thought maybe they
cut it out or something, ifthere was like a moment, but huh,
let me know in the comments ifyou guys saw something I didn't see,
or maybe there's like an explanation somewherethat I'm not aware of. But
I know that going ahead, thatcontinues to happen. But I think I
(41:29):
recall seeing it, or like it'smaybe explained in some way where it's like
we've got our you know, we'reinfiltrating this area or whatever the hell you
know they're doing, but I'm notsure. We'll have to see what happens.
Interesting point about the battle for anepisode that features Sailor Venus or Mina
(41:49):
largely, she never actually attacks, right, kind of thought that was odd.
Did we have more with Mars andTuxedo here? Not? Just well
not really, because Sailor Mercury isthe one that asks if he's going to
stay and fight, and then hesays that he doesn't like to fight woman,
but he would if he has to. But then Queen Beryl interrupts in
(42:09):
his mind and says to come backand not not to engage with them anymore.
Okay, and the English one,it was sort of like Mars and
him start to have this moment kindof we see some sort of expression that
made me think something got cut outthere. They asked. Venus warns them
that he's working for the Negaverse, and the Tuxedo mask is just like,
(42:30):
yes I am, and also hegoes, I like I'll fight each one
of you now he literally does likea one v one me bro, yeah,
like to each of them, andthen that's when Beryl is like,
come back now. And I justthought that that was hilarious because I was
like, I guess evil Darian wouldkind of have like raging teenage gamer vibes,
(42:57):
right, like, like, Iguess that fits. I just thought
that was so funny, Like, sure, you can take them all,
good good luck, although I did, I did, right, he has
an inherent advantage against them and thefact that they just don't want to hurt
him. Yeah, so that doeskind of make defeating him like harder.
(43:19):
I guess. We see Metalia actuallyaddressing in what is evil Prince Darien right
now because he's in that format orform when he's at the Nigga Verse and
we see Queen beryln Malakite discussing herplans for Darien and she's kind of teasing
him about potentially being jealous. Isthat the same, Oh well, it's
(43:42):
more just serious in the in theJapanese who just says that, or the
Queen Mettalia says that he's not allowedto die. Oh yeah, they kind
of we're trying to play up arivalry. I think more between them here.
I think that does unfold a littlelater though they'm not necessarily liking each
other very much, which kind ofmakes sense. But how do we close
(44:06):
up the episode? It's tag Everybody'sback hanging out outside the salon, and
then Usagi says to herself out loudsome of the rest of everybody else in
here that she's not gonna let innocentpeople be involved in this anymore. And
then she also says, but she'sreally happy that even though Momoro is evil
(44:30):
now that he's she's glabb that he'sstill alive. And then everybody's like,
oh, I guess she hasn't reallychanged like we thought she had after all.
Yeah, it's a little bit different. They made it more goofy.
I think it's just her really wantingjunk food and all of that. And
then we get some nice other likeagain, more backdrops. I guess that
(44:53):
I really liked here, Although didyou I don't know if you said this.
Did you notice that Lda actually sortof checks on Ray to make sure
she's okay too? Oh? Yeah, yeah, I liked that they added
that because I was almost like,by the end of this episode, I
felt like poor Ray partially because ofthe editing, I guess, but I
(45:15):
was just like this poor girl atlike just I get it. Yay,
you know, Moon and Tuxedo, but she was dating Gary and and now
he's just not an option out ofnowhere. That has to really suck,
like, I don't know, Idon't think that would be nice. Moon
(45:35):
Star a Sailor Moon Podcast will returnafter these messages and now more moon Star
a Sailor Moon Podcast. I guesseverything's back to normal and slick chicks.
(45:59):
Hey, I'm darved. How aboutwe go pick out on double cheeseburgers,
French Bie, chocolate shakes, andtriple hot footses. Guess things are back
to normal with Serena too. Shemust be over Tuxedo mask. No way,
but I got a super cool planto get him back. Here.
We'll leave brainwash him from someone whocan barely program a VCR. Well,
(46:22):
I gotta say I prefer having thegoofy food Cray Serena back. She really
had me worried there. Hey,Ray, huh are you all right with
all this? Ray? You misshim? I'll be fine. Well,
as soon as we finished debrainwashing texedotmask at Oh, I'm gonna tell that
(46:42):
guy off. But in the meantime, guys, how about those happeners and
French pies. All right, let'sgive some final thoughts on today's episode.
I would say a highlight for mewas probably I talked about the backdrops already,
so I'm going to say that isone of them. But my other
(47:04):
one would be I really liked howthey animated the scanning of the hair,
even though the logic behind it makesme angry. Yeah, I thought they
did a great job with that, plus the sound effects and everything. And
in the English they had a greatmusic sting there too, So that part
does hit really well if you're notbeing annoying about it like I was,
But yeah, I actually do reallylike that moment. Why don't you choose
(47:27):
a highlight from this week? Probably? I think the reason why why some
of the choices in this episode partlooks so fluid and are done so well
is because it was also an episodethat was directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, which
(47:49):
is the best director that worked onthe original series, and anytime that it's
an episode that he's directed, there'sa lot more like interesting camera angles or
interesting animation choices that happen more comedicscenes depending on what's going on. So
(48:17):
that's that's what That's what I wouldsay. I could see exactly what you're
talking about, because even if thisone has some more serious moments, we
did start with Luna getting like, you know, trapped under her arm and
all of that. And then alsoI did notice the camera angles. There
were a lot of interesting shots thatwe don't usually get to see. And
(48:38):
the thing that I thought was interestingwas how they transitioned. Like you were
saying, the flow is a lotnicer, we actually see them like exit
the building and like the wall gettingsmashed and then them going outside rather than
the being like a jump cut,if that makes sense. And I thought
that all of those things plus thestuff I already talked about, really does
(49:00):
make the animation on this episode stickout to me. I'm I was like,
I know it's not ETO, butit really is great, you know,
And because I was like, who, I couldn't, I couldn't guess,
So yeah, I love this one. Let us know if you guys
like the animation too, tell uswhat your highlights would be from this week,
(49:20):
and let's go ahead and rate it. What would you give this episode
if we're gonna have tell us why. I think if it didn't have,
if it didn't have a better animatorand director, I wouldn't have rated it
as high. Even the plot andthe the focus of the monster and where
the monster gets this energy from thisepisode is more interesting. But I just
(49:43):
think that I do give it ahigher rating because of the direction and the
character designer choice was made. Itmade it better than it probably would have
done otherwise. I was going tosay at four point five, but actually
think I'm gonna go with the fouronly because you reminded me again the monster
design itself is really terrible. Ijust don't like it, and i've I've
(50:07):
never liked it. It's and it'snever even scared me. I've just always
been like well about it. Soyeah, I will knock a full star
off for that reason. But overall, I actually really loved this episode.
I think it might because it's oneI haven't seen that much though too.
Yeah I haven't either, and thatdefinitely helps. If it's if it's something
(50:27):
that still has moments that are kindof like new but not new, you
know, less remembered, I'll say, And I think the flow and everything
also for me, I mean timewe get a combined attack, like where
you actually see the two of themdo something and then the abilities merge and
something special happens. I always lovethat, so I'm always going to give
(50:51):
a bonus point for that. Andyeah, I guess we can say part
of the reason I knocked off afull star is also the logic thing that
still kind of just bugs me becauseI couldn't get behind that. But I
was like the little kid watching Billand I the science guy, So I
was literally like, I wrote anemail to Bill and I when I was
like, I think, I don'tknow, I had to be at least
(51:14):
ten at this point, because ifwe're using email, maybe a little older.
But I remember asking him, whydo you caught the tires on cars
spin fat? Look like they're spinningfaster than the car is moving, So
like, that's the kind of crapI was thinking about when I was watching
this show. I don't think mostpeople care about that kind of garbage,
(51:37):
But yeah, overall, it's agreat time. Let's talk about the sailor
says, when I look good,I feel good too. But good hygiene
does more than make you feel good. It keeps you healthy. Brush your
teeth, every morning, every night, and don't forget to flass. Washing
your face helps keep it free fromblemishes, and remember that sunblock. I
(51:58):
keep my nails neat and clean.I always remember to wash up before handling
food. My hair is my prideand joy. I keep it washed,
brushed and shiny. Keeping clean andneat not only makes you feel good,
it's good for you, Sata mooses. So this week the sailor says it's
all about good hygiene. They goover basic hygiene habits that most kids should
(52:19):
know. Brush your teeth, floss, wash your face and hair, and
then they have this thing where itsays, not only does it keep you
clean, but it's also good foryou, which fair and obvious. But
people struggle with hygiene for a myriadof reasons outside of childhood. There's all
kinds of people who have various disabilitiesthat make it harder. People with depression
(52:42):
and all kinds of mental disorders canstruggle with this. So have you ever
struggled with anything like hygiene wise thatyou know maybe you should do more of
or whatever, and like, howdid you deal with that? Not?
Really, I've always been really ocdabout looking good and smelling good and all
that, I guess a basic likethe only answer I would have for that
(53:05):
that's pretty basic with a lot ofpeople is I didn't I didn't start regularly
flossing until I was older, sayingthat was well, but I had a
weird experience with that. But Ithink there's also something about I'm not across
the board, but a lot ofyounger LGBT i'll say masculine presenting. I
don't know, we like to lookgood and smell good and like not all,
(53:30):
but you know what I'm saying, there is kind of usually a little
It used to be like, haveyou ever heard of the term metrosexual?
Yeah, okay, so for theyoung ones, that's what we used to
have to call straight men who washedbecause hygiene was a gay thing, Like
not literally, but it was literallylike if a guy looked like he took
(53:52):
care of himself, well, hewas called metrosexual, which was like some
weird bridge between straight and gay.So I do think there's a little bit
of that that we have going forus. I will say, though,
when I've been depressed and stuff, there are definitely times when I'll you know,
look around the house and I'll belike, you know what, I
(54:14):
probably should have put that dish awayand not just like said, I'll get
to it later or whatever. Iknow you said you haven't really struggled with
that. But for me, anytimeI do get into a slump, one
of like a strategy all used tokind of fix that and get out of
it. I'll take two approaches. The first thing is I stop beating myself
(54:35):
up over it, because that doesn'thelp anything, even though we all do
it because it's like, yeah,I got it, I should be taking
better care of the house. Whatever. Okay, cool. Next, But
then the other thing, whatever Iam doing every day already, I'll try
to attach the task to that.Does that make sense? Yeah, So,
like I'm pretty good about exercising almostevery day, but not I don't
(55:00):
do like crazy things. But I'lldo something, you know what I mean.
And then whatever, like like youwere saying with let's say it's flossing.
If I want to start flossing regularly, as soon as I get off
my treadmill or whatever it is,I'm literally before I even drink water or
sit down or anything, I'm gonnawalk and do the task that I'm trying
to create a new habit for andI've noticed that for me that really works
(55:23):
well. I almost have to trickmyself into like doing things like that sometimes.
I know it's we all have ourown journey on that. Yeah,
I don't know. I hope thathelps some of you. What would you
say? I mean, there's nota lot of to say about hygiene.
(55:47):
It is a fetish for some peopleto not have good hygiene. Yeah,
And then I've known people who arelike very adamantly against deodorant, even the
natural stuff, And I think that'slike a deeper conversation. I mean,
(56:07):
I'll say this, if you aregoing to a situation where you will be
an enclosed space with another person, and you know that space is small and
it will be for an extended periodof time. At that point, the
deodorant isn't so much for you asit is a like politeness to that other
(56:28):
person you will be spending time with. In my opinion, I don't think
it's necessarily required, But it's alsoa little bit like why do I want
to force this other person to likedeal with that for however long? You
know what I'm saying. Other thanthat, though, like go off and
live your life, do what youwant. Just don't trap people with it.
(56:52):
That's my main request on that.Do you want to end anything on
it? Just that one one thingthat a lot of cons like to push,
especially in the past few years fewyears, is that they just they
just make posts saying how important itis for people at animate conventions to be
(57:14):
hygienic and like a word deodorant, and because I think that's another yes,
I've heard that before. Yeah,it can be another like negative stigma that
people that are actively going to conslike don't have a shower and all that,
so they heard that. In fairness, I do believe a lot of
(57:36):
costs play costumes are probably not washableor that you can only hand you can
only hand wash them. Yeah, yeah, but I will say if you
can get yourself a portable steamer thatdoes work, wonders. It's not perfect,
but it'll take out a lot ofthe like bacteria that's making the smells
so for anyone, because I'm surea lot of people who are going are
(57:59):
shower and it's just like if youhave some kind of like faux fur or
you know what I mean, likeanything that holds onto a scent, it
is probably from that I mean, you know, that's a crowded space.
Though. That kind of goes withwhat I was saying, where it's like,
take into account what you're doing, right, Like, if you're just
going out to go for a walkaround the town outside or whatever, who
(58:21):
the hell cares. But if you'regoing to be standing like armpit to armpit
with five hundred other people, maybeconsider them keep yourself something natural. But
I'm just saying, but who knows, you know, I could be saying
this now and then in five yearsit's literally like people get canceled for wearing
deodorant. Who knows. I know, you never know. No, I
(58:45):
highly doubt that. Do you havea cologne? Yeah? Actually I predominantly
use I don't think I've even talkedabout this on the podcast yet. So
there's this company based on Japan thatmakes official, real legitimate perfume based off
(59:06):
anime and anime video game characters. So I have I have three from the
first one I bought was from Persona, the second one I bought was Coronattention,
and the third one was from SeamanKing. And you send me a
link to that, I'm gonna actuallyguess. So that sounds awesome. Do
they have sailor Moon characters. Yeah, yeah, they yeah. I was
(59:30):
just thinking if they do, Yeah, they've they have every single scout.
Yeah, they have one for everysingle guardian. You know, some of
them are matchets smelling. But it'sokay because I remember, you know,
the Ocean bomb drinks that they putout some of the flavors on those.
I was just like, I don'tknow if I need physy cucumber water,
(59:52):
I'm okay, yeah, but gooff Purinus or whoever it was. That's
great, that's actually cool. II didn't expect that. Tell everybody where
they can find that. Again, what is it? While the company name
is called a Primanias, which isit's spelled pr i am, and then
(01:00:12):
like the word maniacs, so likeafter the M, then the rest of
the letters that would be maniacs dotcom and then you would you just wouldn't
need a proxy service, like athird party service to buy anything from them
if you're out of the country andthe only only certain services will order perfume
because technically it's illegal to ship reallybecause of the fire hazard. But oh
(01:00:37):
okay, if it's a really smallbottle, then it's fine, so I'll
be sure not to order anything Marsbased. Then I'm not trying to blow
up a plane. I'm just kidding, though I still might look into it.
That's really cool though. Colognas issomething I love fragrances. Some people
hate them, some people are allergicto it. I am a big fan.
(01:00:58):
I think it's important. Yeah,I love it whenever. I think
whenever you go to a good livedrag show and a queen comes over and
you get that kind of like cloudof perfume, you know what I mean,
right, and it's sort of likeit just adds something to the moment.
I've always loved it. My gotwos were always when I was younger,
Calvin Klein c K one and thenI really like Chrome. I don't
(01:01:23):
know if you've ever heard of thatone. Chrome. I always love the
commercial for Awkward de Joio though,Oh my gosh, I need to find
it. I have a weird obsessionwith commercials and music in them. Auk
(01:02:24):
with a Joy, the New Essenceof Joy, Georgio Money. Yeah,
Well there you go. You guysgot some cologne advice that was anime related
somehow. Who knew that would happen? Welcome and tell us how you guys
like going to the salon. I'msure we've got a lot of people who
absolutely love it. Let us knowif you cut your own hair too,
(01:02:45):
because you'd probably save yourself a lotof money. Just like Chris. There
you go. You do a goodjob if you do it yourself. By
the way, it looks professional.Oh yeah, it looks. I don't
know how you manage the back, but it's really I mean because any any
time that I do my hair everyday, I just i'd blow dry it
(01:03:05):
and I have one of those circularshaped curler combs. But anytime that i'm
any time that I do the backof my hair, I just brush it
straight down. And I don't know, it's like the same any time that
I have it that i'm cutting it, I just brush it. I brush
all of it all around my headcompletely straight down and then just kind of
(01:03:27):
go in a circle and then likethe through the top of my layers and
all that. Did you ever takestylist classes or anything? No? Wow,
well good, I don't think Icould manage that. God, I
have really obnoxiously thick hair though, like you look like your thick hair too.
But anytime I go to a hairdresser. Almost every single one's like,
(01:03:49):
oh my god, your hair isto I'm like, I know, I've
heard it my whole life. Iknow it is. And yeah, I
caught like Harry Potter hair because Icut it short and it looks good for
like four or five days and thenit, you know, sprouts crazy,
it starts looking weird. I guessI will wrap up the episode there I
(01:04:11):
want to see. So next weekis a little Mismanners. That's what I'm
really excited for. Ski, Bunny, Ice, Princess, Last Resort,
Tuxedo and Mask. We still havea while until the Sailor Venus episode a
little bit. Yeah, it happensvery close to the end. Actually,
yeah, it's like forty two.Yeah. I love this set of episodes
(01:04:35):
we're coming up on. They're reallyfun. I don't remember Last Resort,
but I remember the other ones. That's the I think that's the one where
they it's a Japanese steamed one wherethey it's a family vacation with this Auger's
family. That's one. Yeah, that's one of my favorites because the monster
it's like the one of the onlytimes it's like not a negaverse thing.
(01:04:58):
Yeah, it's a Japanese folk orkind of thing. And that also was
the first time I saw hot springson anything in my life, because you
know how it was back then.I was like, what is that?
And then I think I asked someoneand they were like, yeah, they
have that stuff over there. Youcan just go and like take a bath
in these natural I'm like, whydon't we do that here? I was
so jealous. All right, we'lltalk about that when we get there.
(01:05:20):
Okay, well that's it for thisweek. Uh, you have got Do
you have any interviews coming up soon? I have stuff that's being facilitated,
but nothing that's that has a dateyet. Oh that's right. I wanted
to ask you. Have you everinterviewed anybody from the newer card Captor one.
I think I can't remember what yousaid. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(01:05:43):
you asked me that. Yeah,I've done that. I've not animal
people from the from the card ofLike, I'm done. Thank you for
listening to this week's episode of Moonstar, a Sailor Moon podcast. I hope
(01:06:06):
you guys had fun with it andenjoyed the sort of weird like trajectory of
energy that went on during today's episode. I feel like at the top it
was kind of low energy, andthen by the end of it, Chris
and I were, you know, getting ramped up for the next set of
episodes, which I'm excited to sharewith you guys. We just so you
guys know, we are recorded upto that special Sailor Venus History episode.
