of your hosts, Alex and thisweek Chris and I will be covering Grandpap
Follies, another one of the episodeswith follies in the title. I don't
know why it comes up a lot, but it does, so here's another
one for you. This is agreat episode this week for the most part,
(02:28):
but Europe. Just stay tuned andsee why the final rating doesn't end
quite as high as you might thinkfor an episode that has so many great
moments in it and introduces one ofmy personal favorite characters to us in the
Deep version chat. So if youwant to find out why it lands maybe
not as high as most of uswould think, stay tuned, and if

(03:15):
are still a few rolls left, though they are we are getting down to
it, and production is going tostart rolling ahead very shortly, probably this
summer, on these larger long termprojects. So the window of opportunity is
growing smaller and smaller. We'll saythat if you're interested, go ahead and
do that. All right, let'sget into the show first. Why don't
(04:03):
you tell me about interviewing the voiceof Kean Barrel? Yeah, yeah,
so, um, I think itwould have been two weeks ago now,
I interviewed Cindy Robinson, whom sheis probably best known overall as the voice
(04:26):
of Amy and all of the Sonicthe Hedgehog properties. And she's also five
characters and fire emblem. But thenyeah, and she's been doing predominantly anime
voice work since the early two thousands. But she also I don't know she
(04:49):
does as much anymore, but shealso um does a bunch of ADR work
for major film and television, whichis the short thing for people, if
you don't know what ADR. That'swhen any anytime a celebrity can't come back,
like a major celebrity can't come backto voice pickup lines or fill anything
(05:10):
in for something that they're starring inand then they hire a voice act or
sound alike to do it. Ornot just that too, but almost any
time that you hear like an actoror anybody off screens screaming or talking over
an intercom, that's also what ADRis too. So she's she did that
for like, I don't know, fifteen years, but she is also Queen
(05:36):
Beryl birth year, and then Ithink might not be every single season,
but she's also various monsters of theday. In the viz Re dub of
Sailor Moon when you were interviewing her, do you remember like just one highlight
that stood out regarding Sailor Moon firstand then something unrelated regarding Sailor Moon is
(06:00):
we didn't talk about it a ton. I guess the most interesting thing is
that she just didn't because she's olderand she doesn't really watch anime outside of
whatever she works on it. Shejust didn't realize the She knew that it
was like an original classic title, but she didn't realize the impact. I
(06:23):
guess that Beryl specifically has on thisor had whatever on the series. Did
she when did it hit her?Do you remember did she say, I
mean pretty early On, you know, maybe like after the first the first
few episodes, gotcha, it issuch a really big character to play,
and the original voice actress what's hername? I would have to look,
(06:46):
but she also did such an incrediblejob of being just so big, over
the top evil. Like if Iever think of evil queen, just random
evil Queen Beryl is usually the firstone I would go to as a great
example anyway for me, because I'mjust not like a Disney kid, so
I wouldn't think of any of them. But what was something unrelated that like
(07:09):
unrelated to Sailor Mayon that was kindof interesting? Oh, I guess one
one big story from that from ourinterview too is one one other large property
that she plays two characters in isthe Persona Games, and one of them,
Laborous, is a robot um androidcharacter, and she said that when
(07:38):
she first started playing that role umlike in the in the late two thousands
or early twenty tens, she gota letter from a fan that either they
they're autistic or they have aspergers, and they just emailed her or wrote to
her and just said that the firstwhen I when I heard and saw you,
(08:01):
oh I really love that's that's sortof something that can be universal,
I think that everyone can relate tobecause representation of all kind is important just
depends on who you are, rightLike, whoever you are is going to
depend on what representation is important toyou. And I I don't want to
talk too much about my own, like you know, personal brand of neurodivergence,
(08:24):
but I remember one of the thingsthat I did say in therapy one
time when I was getting sort ofoverwhelmed by I guess coming to terms with
certain limitations that you know may presentto me sometimes, right, And I
just remembered like telling my therapist, well, I don't really know what to
do with my life because I don'tthink I can be like a theoretical physicist
(08:52):
like Sheldon from from the Big BangTheory. And and that's when it sort
of hit me that I was like, that character is my only or at
the time, was my only frameof reference for a person who was somewhat
like me in that way, thatwas like successful and had money to pay
(09:13):
their bills. And then I realizedhow sad that was, and I was
like, I'm sure part of itis just I haven't been exposed to some
things, right, And then partof it is just that there's probably not
very much of that either. AndI love that that's something that she brought
up in her interview because I thinksomething we both can relate to. What's
(09:33):
some representation. We've seen an increasea lot in the last like ten years.
Well, I mean, especially inanime and Japanese media. There's I
guess it's been within the last likethree or four years primarily, but there's
been way more Yaoe or Uri Yaweand yuri series that have been dubbed and
(09:56):
have reached like a big mainstream popularityin America more than they ever have.
So that's been really nice. Evenif I wasn't gay too, I think
i'd appreciate that. Yeah, andI think so we've seen a lot of
like more that's a good reference forthe show because we're an anime related show,
(10:18):
but just a lot more LGBT representationacross the board, and a lot
more people of color, Like Idon't know how to describe that really because
I'm not so, but there's morerepresentation for them in a more diverse way
than we had in the past.I would guess that would just be what
I feel I have seen, andso I think one of the next things
(10:43):
we're going to see rolling through isthat like the different types of neurodiversity and
helping people understand what it actually means, because I think the old way of
thinking was sort of like, oh, that person is either crazy or they're
not right. Yeah, And oncesomeone is branded crazy, the people who
are quote not sort of our trainedto think like anything they do wrong,
(11:07):
Like anything the quote crazy person doesthat's annoying is therefore wrong because they're not
the crazy one, right and anyway, So yeah, I think that's what's
coming next. Yeah. I wantedto also hold on who was the she
you said, Laborus right, Yeah? And Persona she plays Labors, which
is the female character in Persona four, and then she's played way more of
(11:30):
a Ken who is a little boyor a teenage boy character, so she
does all kinds of voices. She'sreally diverse. Wow. Well, people
can check that out on your YouTubein the video format already. And that's
one of the interviews that we're goingto be presenting a little bit later when
it lands in the season at thecorrect time, and you know, we'll
(11:54):
do the clips and everything with that. So that's something people can look forward
to. What is I sent yousomething to look at? Do you remember
what it was? Yeah? Wasthat I don't remember the name of it
now, but it's an upcoming indiegame that's based off of like it's like
a mix between Animal Crossing and like, well, it's like Animal Crossing,
(12:15):
but it has nineties anime art style, like female characters and as the main
characters. Yeah, and it's likeyou say, animal Crossing, but your
reference point is probably going to differdepending on your age and like what games
you're into. For me, it'sa Sailor Moon in a harvest moon.
Yeah, like convergence. That's whatI get the most from it. I
(12:37):
think other people will reference Stardu Valleyprobably like you were saying, some people
will reference Animal Crossing. It's it'sa like what do you want to I
don't like this word because it's onceI hear a word a lot of it
makes my head crazy. But likeit's a cozy game for sailor like Sailor
Moon aesthetics, right, Yeah,I think that this idea is fantastic.
(13:00):
I was looking at some of theart for it, and it looks like
it's made an RPG Maker, whichI absolutely love because I enjoy using that
too. And it's hard to tellwhether or not they're really just going to
have straight up characters from Sailor Moonin it, or if it's just going
to be in that art style.I don't think they're going to have anybody
from the series in it. Ithink at the best it would be like
(13:22):
an Easter Egger kind of a nodlike in somebody's design, probably just for
legal reasons more than anything, butit looks cute and that I wanted to
ask you have you Are you intogames like that or were you ever I
remember when well I shouldn't say Iremember because I wasn't quite old enough like
when it first came out, butum, I'm familiar with Harvest Moon like
(13:46):
that was a pretty early PS twogame, and I never I never owned
it, but I just you know, I've seen it a tonet and saw
it a tonet used game stores andwhatever growing up. It was like one
of the covers that stood out toyou. You just never got a kind
of yeah, I know what youmean. I love games like that.
I think they're really relaxing and fun, and I just I wish there was
(14:11):
one that was just actually straight upSailor Moon sort of come. I don't
know, we'll have to see howit plays out, because it's one of
those things that's almost like the moreI look at it, it's like it's
referencing Sailor Moon almost for the attentionthat it'll bring it. But I don't
know if that'll speak to the quality. Does that make sense? Yeah,
(14:31):
so we'll have to actually see.I hope good things for it though,
And if people want to check itout, it's called Fields of Mysteria and
that's m I S L Mystery Am I S t r I A.
And they do have an official websiteso you can go look at it.
They're screenshots. It shows some ofthe features that are going to be in
it for anyone who cares. Youcan customize your character and your farm to
(14:54):
suit your style, farm, fish, minecraft, all the harvest moon stuff.
Find your idea you'll match so likegetting married, things like that.
Animals are in it. There's magicto it, which is kind of great.
I'm interested to see how that turnsout. They're going to have the
seasons, quests, festivals, andit says thirty plus pillagers to follow their
(15:15):
stories. I don't know. Imean it's it looks pretty promising and some
of the characters, like, there'sone here, Okay, so there's two.
I'm gonna say, I see theSailor Moon references. One looks like
if you took helios and then putsunglasses on his head and like a front
(15:39):
swoop to his hair, and thenthe other one is like a tan helios
and a print's outfit. So Imean, I see that. Good for
them. Did you look at theirwebsite at all? Oh? The video
game website. I just read thearticle that you sent. Okay, some
of their concept art is really cool. I'll post some of this stuff probably
(16:00):
on the Facebook so people can checkit out if they're interested. All right,
are you ready to get into thisweek's episode? Oh? Yeah,
Today on Sailor Moon, Raised Grandpais acting very strange and we don't know
what's wrong. Then Zoisite and ourevil Minion turn up at Raised Temple looking
(16:21):
for another rainbow crystal. Only theSailor Scouts can stop them or can they
just stick around? And I'll showyou what is our Japanese title, Grandpa
loses control ray in Danger. OurEnglish one is Grandpa's follies. There's that
word again, which it came uptwice now, so I think that when
(16:41):
I was trying to make a fakename, the fact that I went for
that word's fair. And the firstthing we come in on in the Deep
One anyway, is this sort ofvery specific music staying that's only a couple
of seconds long, but for somereason it hit in a really nostalgic way.
(17:03):
So I'm curious to see if it'sused a lot. But I really
love it. And what's the what'sthe opening scene for this episode? Interestingly,
Um, it just kind of startsout right away where Ray's grandpa is
sitting on the roof of the shrinelooking up at the moon, and Zoocyte
shows up already and tries to getthe rainbow crystal out of him. But
(17:25):
then because Grandpa, you know,is just like Ray and has the same
spiritual premonition and energy that Ray has, he at least right now, he's
able to he's able to like fightback against it internally, and then Raise
both the raised crows notices Zoacite andgo up an attack, and then Zoocyte
just just goes away for the timebeing. I love it when there's a
(17:48):
full moon reminds me of when weused to go camping and roast marshmallows with
my grandpa. What are you doingup there? I feelieve old Queen Baryl
(18:11):
will be so pleased when I retrievedthe rainbow crystal from this old teezer.
Once we've collected all the crystals,we can finally release the Nega force,
(18:34):
like taking candy from a baby.I must summon my rill against this table.
No, this can't be what doyou know that he's is not so
old? After all? Night crowns? I like crimes? Yeah? And
(19:08):
who who witnesses all of this happen? Ray? Well? Well? Also,
and I don't know. I guessit wouldn't be you reach hero yet.
I don't think he sees that yet. He's there. He's sleeping on
the stairs, so technically he's therefor it. Yeah. I swear he
wakes up during it, but Icould be remembering it wrong. So you
(19:30):
reach your ow and or Chad, depending on what version you're following. This
is the first episode we see himand what is who is he? Why
is he significant? Well? Heends up working at the shrine. Yeah,
and he represents an important character inall of their lives in the sense
(19:52):
that he's there in some important momentsfor the Scouts, but also more importantly
for Ray, right because he's theclosest to her. And and we'll see,
So we have this moment with thefull moon. Like you said,
Zoisite shows up and attacks right away. Which how did you feel about that?
Was it? I kind of thoughtit was exciting having it start right
like that. Yeah, Sam,that made things more interesting and correct me
(20:15):
if I'm wrong. But what wasthe what was Remind me? What was
the last episode? Oh, twentynine? Um, yeah, gosh,
I'm blanking. That doesn't speak wellfor it. Oh it was. It
was though, it was the Okay, I lied, that's a great episode.
I just blink. Um. Yeah. I think because that one was
(20:40):
a lot more story heavy and notreally action heavy, they maybe wanted to
just like catch you right in thebeginning and remind you, like this is
also exciting. I don't know,yeah, but I enjoyed it. I
thought it was a great choice. And what do you I just this is
conjecture unless you actually know. Butwhere do Ray and her grandfather's powers come
(21:00):
from outside of the Sailor Scout stuff? I don't know. Actually, without
looking it up. That's something wecould do, like when we folk do
a special on her specifically, becauseI'm sure we'll do one on everyone eventually,
we could really dig into that detailand see what we can find,
because I think that would be interestingif anyone knows, comment because I would
love to know that. Also,I love that her grandpa has the same
(21:23):
thing, right, because I thinkthis is the first time we find out
that, right. Yeah, andso getting to see him do what he
does this episode is pretty exciting. How is Chad's voice in the viz dub?
Because I haven't heard it? Didthey? Does he have any kind
of accent at all? That's verynormal. It's funny too because I don't
(21:44):
think I mentioned this, but I'veinterviewed raised grandpa Viz actor Eros Viz actor
and then, um, you alreadyknow that I had interviewed Stephen or yeah,
Stephen Vnarsky, who did you EiRow in the It was the first
voice of you each row and theoriginal you interviewed him too, That's right,
(22:06):
We did talk about it, Okay, So I would like to hear
the Viz one because at least withhim, I haven't heard his voice yet.
And I don't think his voice hasto be as wacky as it is
in the nineties necessarily to work, but I prefer the nineties one. It's
one of my favorite vocal choices besidesMolly. How would you describe Have you
(22:32):
heard him in the nineties one atall? Yeah, at least when Stephen
was playing You Each Your Row.It's a very stereotypical, heavy cartoony surfer
like surfer Stone or California Guy.Yeah, my na child, I'm a
(22:55):
struggling musician. I've all sorts ofgreat things about this place. Please let
me stay. I'll do anything youwant please. And I don't know what
it is, but it was likemy first I think it was the first
time I ever heard that accent sustainedin a character for more than like a
split second for a joke or something, you know. Yeah, and the
way he did it, it justadds so much charm to the character of
(23:18):
You Each Row or Chad, AndI think it kind of helps take some
of the because like the way Raytreats him isn't always the best, you
know what I mean, But himbeing so goofy and kind of unfazed by
it makes it really like kind ofokay almost, I don't not really okay,
but you know what I mean,Like, it's not like it makes
(23:40):
it less uncomfortable. I think,I don't want to make you give a
preference, but I would say,can you appreciate all versions of him?
Yeah? Okay, because they eachhave their merit, right, I think,
like in their own way? Whatdoes So we see Chad here and
he meets Ray and Grandpa after thiskind of thing happens and they're talking,
(24:06):
and then he has this moment withyou know, kind of similar to Makoto
last episode where he sees Ray andshe's beautiful and she does he does the
hard eyes and everything, which pointpoint of interest. He's the first male
character we've seen do that. Yeah, is he the the wait? Melvin
(24:26):
does it at some point right, multiple times? Yeah? Okay, so
him and Melvin, let's keep oureyes out and see if anyone any other
quote male characters do that. Andwhat does he request after he sees Ray?
Doesn't he immediately ask to work there? Pretty much? Yeah? Very
(24:47):
like zero two one hundred in asplit second. But to be fair,
it seems like he was homeless orsomething. Yeah, so probably not like
you know, going to look thatfar, but either way, I appreciate
him. And then we kind ofget this jump back to zoisite for a
second. Does it go in thatorder to in the Japanese too. It's
(25:11):
just showing the monster that's inside hergrandpa, right, yeah, and it's
like really quick. Okay. Icouldn't tell if that was one of their
weird splicing moments because it sort ofdoes feel out of place to me a
little, but I don't know.I guess it's like a plot device.
And then after we have that,we jump back to the temple and what's
(25:34):
happening. Her grandpa and you eachRow are swinging from the trees in the
courtyard of the shrine from ropes andthen you reach Hirow falls to the ground,
and then Usagi, Makoto an Ambieshow up, and then Ray tells
(25:56):
them that Ever sent the other nightthat her grandpa's been acting really weird and
like doing stupid stuff like this.Yeah, and this scene is I'm sure
it's ridiculous in every single version, but some of there's just a lot of
great. I don't know if it'sjust choices that this character they made for
(26:18):
Chat in the nineties, or ifit's a nineties thing, but he says
things like I'm a singer, nota monkey. But the way he delivers
it, like they'll hear it onthe show and I'm going to put it
in and then like am I ablack belt? Yet after he like you
know, is about to pass out. It's just really ridiculous. And yeah
(26:40):
they are. The girls come upand see this going on, and Amy
asks who chat is? How doesRay describe him? She says that,
um, pretty much, that she'sjust someone she wants to work at the
shrine and like become a grandfather hergrandfather's apprentice. Yeah, she's kind of
(27:07):
rude about him, and she goes, he's some toasted rock star recuperating from
his last tour or so he says. And then immediately after she's like being
sweet about him. And I'm startingto sort of see sometimes when maybe the
dialogue like they weren't quite sure theinflection to users, you know what I'm
(27:29):
saying, where it's like the waythey described not being in the room together.
I don't know. Every now andthen on something like that will happen
and it'll stand out to me.Why are Ray and her grandfather fighting right
now? Because she she tells himthat if he keeps doing stuff like this
all of a sudden, and youknow, publicly, then they're not going
(27:55):
to get attention and people are goingto lose respect trust them to their shrine.
M So they took a different direction. Yeah, yeah, that makes
a lot more sense this. Itwas more focused on him could have hurt
Chad, and then Grandpa's just randomlycrying and acting crazy and she's just basically
(28:17):
getting like frustrated with him being outof control and doesn't really reference any of
that other stuff and it is mostlyconcerned about him, like you know,
getting somebody hurt, which I thinkthat was probably made because of the laws,
because they had to address the dangershown. Yeah, and it was
a children thing. So we havethis cute moment where he plays a trick
(28:37):
on Chad after crying and him andSerena are kind of laughing and enjoying themselves,
and Race of course getting mad atSerena. And it was funny because
like when this was going on,I had a moment of being like,
oh my god, enough of thefighting, and then like two seconds later
Amy and Lena were like, ohmy god, enough of the fighting.
We hate like Lena and saying wehate you, but they like they laughed
(29:00):
and they were just like, bye, Grandpa, you're going to see a
doctor. Ever since you fell offthe roof, you've been acting like a
granola bars. Don't listen to her. Grandpa, a pit bull with a
toothache's got a better sense of humor, cuter too, who wants to go
flying and figet it out? Yougot meatballs on the sides of your head
to go with the spaghetti inside.Did you see get a rife? Ray?
(29:26):
You can't go shoving people around likethat at big bullet Leta's right,
Ray, apologize right now and she'llstop that awful crying. Fine, be
that way, Bratt. I'm sickof having to break up your pre adolescent
fights. Grow up, get alife. Yeah, give us a call
when you get out of diapers.Huh, fine, get out of here.
(29:47):
I'm not apologizing to anybody, especiallythat did Serena. And I thought
that was so funny because that letme know that that was probably an intentional
thing where they want us to feellike, Okay, it's really a long
Were you feeling that at all?Uh? I mean, yeah, I
guess that's that's a good point too. It could have come off differently in
(30:10):
other versions though, because there waslike the fighting and arguing with Grandpa and
Ray and then Ray and Chad andthen Ray and Serena, and it was
kind of like one after the other. So it's just a lot of screaming,
and I think my ears were like, oh my god, enough already.
Favorite line from the show, though, is when Ray addresses her grandpa
(30:33):
says, ever since you fell offthe roof, you've been acting like a
granola bar. Don't listen to herGrandma. What I do is that I
think I'm like slightly too young toremember when that was used, because I
never called anyone a granola bar.I don't know what that means. The
(30:53):
closest thing I can think of islike hippie, because I know sometimes people
are like, oh, you're verygranola if you're like hippie, dippie or
whatever. But he wasn't acting likea hippie, so it just seemed like
such a random word. And theway she says it is so funny too,
because there's a weird pause before granolabar, like she doesn't know what
to say, and then that's whatshe settles on. But I absolutely love
(31:18):
that moment, so everyone can enjoythat. If you've been acting like a
granola bar, after all the fightingkind of subsides, we get this moment
of like calmness, what's happening here? You beat your own rare by themselves,
and Ray says, she just remarksout loud about she wishes that Grandpa
(31:41):
would stop being weird, and thenyou reach Hiro says that you know,
some people, especially when they're older, they can just act out and be
strange when when the seasons change fromsummer into autumn. So I'm sure that
he'll peter out and be normal prettysoon. Is that a thing? I
(32:05):
mean, I guess the probably usto do with like depression. I mean
maybe, but there is that thing. I don't remember what it's called,
but it's like where certain people, like after a certain time of night,
just kind of like start acting reallyweird after a certain age. There's like
a term for it. There's amovie based on it, and it's like
sleepwalking but not and it's it's reallyscary, like it's it's almost I might
(32:30):
have the word werewolf in it.I'm not sure, but anyway, if
anyone knows what I'm talking about lookit up. If not, I'll like
look it up and put it innext week so you can have that's pay
attention too. But the concept Alexis referring to hear is told some down
his syndrome. The term sundowning refersto a state of confusion occurring in the
(32:51):
late afternoon and lasting into the night. Sundowning can cause different behaviors such as
confusion, anxiety, aggression, orignoring directions. Sundowning can also lead to
pacing, all wondering sundowning is nota disease. Yeah, that might be
a thing. I don't know they'retalking about that. One thing I noticed
in this moment was the animation, and I thought this moment looked good.
(33:15):
But the rest of it is thatwho is this actually can't tell. Yeah,
it's someone that we've talked about thatwe've brought up in the same reasoning
before. It's just it's a guideinto Kura Nakamra. He only did episodes
in season one and then he neverworked on the series accounts, so kind
of like the mixed bag deal whereyeah, he's just he's just okay,
(33:37):
yeah. Yeah. Some of themoments were really cute. Some of them
were kind of whatever, Oh mygosh, see and then we go back.
Oh wait, no, I forgotto touch on this earlier. Actually,
let me bring this up. Duringthe like one of Ray and Serena's
fights, Ray actually pushes Serena down, and that's what makes Amy and lead
a storm off and they like tryto force her to apologize for pushing her
(33:59):
down. Does that happen in theJapanese version? Oh? Yeah, okay,
so it was like straight up inboth versions they're like, please don't
push her down. That's too much. Okay, gotcha. Also, the
way she pushed her down was weird. It was like with one finger.
We cut to later after and Serenahas a plan. What is her plan?
(34:20):
Oh, it's time to play matchmaker? Yeah cool. I can totally
see Ray going up with a hotrock star Serena. Doot. The last
thing you need is to do moremedley to raise Like, come on,
Luna, it'll be kicked. Don'tbe such an old stodge myster. Just
how do you plan to play matchmakeranyway? No, Serena, you'll promise
(34:44):
you wouldn't use the Luna pin forfranks anymore. This, guys barn me
into a fortun tiger recognize me,don't count on that? Well? She
(35:09):
she hadn't when during that same scenethat we were just talking about, she's
also outside. She's just sitting ona bench with Luna, just like a
few feet away. And then,um, she wants to for whatever reason,
she wants Bray and you each yearto go out with each other.
(35:31):
And then she uses the moon thesky's pen to transform herself into a fortune
teller, um, and then goesup to them and does bullshit and then
gets called out right away. Ilove that that's how you describe that.
Um, it is what she does. Though I wanted I was going to
(35:51):
ask you if there was anything tothat sticks things she was doing. It's
like a I think it's like ajet, like a Japanese like a thing
that's specific to Japan and fortune telling. Because I've never seen that before.
It probably is. And I imaginethat the way she was doing it was
wrong or something in a very obviousway that's like kind of a joke that
(36:12):
we probably wouldn't pick up on.I thought, what did you think of
her? Look? I don't know, it was stupid, like you could
really obviously tell that it was herin comparison to pretty much every other time
that she's used the transformation pen.I wonder if that's because she really shouldn't
use it for things like that,So maybe the power was weak or on
it or something. Probably I liketo think about the way their magic functions.
(36:38):
Also, Terry's fortune telling voice wasreally silly. Oh I seem strong
the plations. Let me tell youyour fortune. You see these sticks here
when I throwed them into the airin your future? Huh? And I
have a strong hunt arning bills stillbe cleaning ready? Oh yeah, you
(37:12):
see how these steaks are classed inmy hands now, I mean, the
only one thing time for a littlekissy face? Come on, what are
you dating for? This dits isout of control? I'll go chack,
no kissy face. Because it waslike, you know, they told her
to do an accent, but shewas like, well, I'm not going
(37:32):
to just pick a random ethnicity, you know, because that could not come
off properly, and so it waslike this weird, unplaceable accent that just
made no sense. And honestly, like I know, people have a really
strong preference when it comes to thesecharacters like who voiced sailor moon and everything,
(37:54):
and some people really prefer Terry andI was one of those people for
a long time. But when shedoes the wacky stuff like that, she
sounds just like Linda Valentine. Yeah, And I think that's where Linda had
to take her inspiration from, becausethat was probably like the notes of Terry's
that she could actually hit, andthen the rest just had to be her
(38:15):
kind of natural thing. And soI think when people really pay attention,
it is a little nitpicky because it'ssort of like, I don't know,
it's not as different I think aspeople make it out to be, where
just certain parts are. Anyway,I thought this part was fun until,
of course there was more fighting, which I think I just get fatigued from
(38:39):
that as a plot device personally, and I'm glad that it fades away because
it does in later seasons. It'slike still there, but it's not as
frequent. And then we cut toLuna and Serena having a heart to heart
about her meddling and like y Raysmaybe upset. What is some of the
things Luna says here cheer ups Rita. I can't. I totally embarrassed myself
(39:05):
with Ray she hates me. Shedoesn't take you. She thinks Seana Major
did, which under the circumstances,I don't blame her, but you know,
Ray tomorrow a little blew over.Of course she will eventually, and
then I bit she'll be glad tohave some help with her grandpa. That
well, before, before Rusaki transformedand did that, Luna said that,
(39:29):
you know, you're just gonna pissRay off more, and then Yusaki brushed
it off and then excuse me,m because because that the last thing that
Ray says before walking away is thatthat I'm not going to talk to you
ever again. And then Luna prettymuch just says, like trying to listen
to what I was saying. Yeah, it's I think in this one it
(39:52):
was more of her explaining it,like why Ray was upset by her behavior
and stuff. And I was probablymeant to kind of help kids who might
have been like Serena, who foundthemselves in positions of like they're bothering their
friends in certain ways. Maybe theydon't understand. It was probably trying to
spell that out for them a littlebit, I think. Um. But
(40:14):
on a lighter note, Luna iseating something. Wow, No mum's chocolate
kicks, mushy yummy. How canyou even think of food right now?
Major chocolate hit? Yeah, Iknow, no sticknies up to race timple
(40:40):
as a peace offering. This isinspired. If there's one thing Ray can't
resist, it's anything chocolate. Ohand may not even have to apologize,
Serena, Your mum brought those inspecial for us, aren't you? I
was telling me discipline builds character.Anyone more? Keep going over my big
(41:01):
mouth. I want those cupcakes allfor me. And they call them chocolate
cakes. They look like chocolate cakesto me in the English dub, but
they might have changed the inside.Do you know what that food is?
Are they are they colored? Yeah? Yeah? Those those would just be
um. I don't know if youknow what they are. But in Japan,
(41:21):
one of the dessert items um,it's like I think it's just called
I think probably what she's eating inthat episode is mochi. It's um,
it's flour rice, flour dough, and then inside of it is um sweet
red bean paste. I've heard ofit. Okay, I understand that makes
(41:42):
sense. They they might have isit red inside and the Yeah, okay,
I think they recolored it to brownbecause in the deep one it looks
like chocolate cakes. They actually lookpretty tasty. Point of interest, later
on, there's a moment of herholding these chocolates like these cakes are the
mochi or whatever it is, andpointing with the moon behind her, and
(42:04):
that was used on some of themerch in the nineties, and I've seen
it kind of as like an iconicimage too, So I'm probably gonna honestly,
that's probably going to be the episodecover for this one, but it's
one of my favorite images. It'son the holographic binder. If anyone has
it, post pictures and tag us, because I would love to see what
(42:25):
you use it for. Love thatbinder, Do you know what I'm talking
about? Yeah, Okay, afterthis moment with Luna and Serena, what
happens you reach Dre it's at night, and then you reach ro was just
thinking about Ray and then Rays inthe bath thinking about her grandpa in the
situation, and then her grandpa isinside the main room in the shrine meditating
(42:54):
over fire, and then Zoosite showsup again and then the blasts blast for
Grandpa outside. For the bathroom scene, we only really see her face in
her in the bathroom for like herin the bath for I don't know,
is really short in the English one? Is that longer in the Japanese?
Do you think it's like a coupleof seconds it's a little bit longer.
(43:16):
Probably, Yeah, I was gonnasay, I'm sure they just like chopped
around that, And that's one ofthose moments. Things like that to me,
as long as I still get thestory, it's kind of whatever,
unless it was like a really wellanimated episode that I might kind of care
because I want to see how,you know, she Eto does that.
But otherwise whatever. I really likedGrandpa using the fire so good. Same
(43:39):
my secured guidance. Help me tofight the evil that threatens me. Come
on, try and take me acreepy witch, Grandpa, you're way too
weak to hold me up this diettalking about to reveal voice site and we
(44:01):
mentioned earlier too. I love gettingto see him do that. I thought
the English voice actor who played himin the DEEG did a great job of
like serious goofy in this episode, because there was a lot of back and
forth between that for Grandpa's character andeventually, as all of them do,
(44:22):
Grandpa has to transform into because he'sthe Rainbow Crystal Warrior or one of the
Seven Shadows. The name of thismonster is do you know? Yeah,
in Japanese it's Gigi, which isironically that's the Japanese word for Grandpa.
They called him pox in the Englishone, which I think pox, other
than you know, like chicken poxand stuff, is just generally like an
(44:45):
ailment of some kind. I'm notreally sure exactly what means. Okay,
that's a choice any of several viraldiseases producing a rash of I'm not I'm
going to cut that out. Theydon't need to hear that Pops is nasty,
you guys. That's what you needto hear. And you can google
(45:07):
it yourself if you want to hearthat gross part, So enjoy that.
But yeah, they I don't thinkthat name fits this monster at all.
I think Gigi's a really cute namefor it, because how would you describe
it? It looks just like exactlylike Japanese very old if if anyone's ever
seen, you know, hundreds ofyears old Japanese art. It's based off
(45:30):
of how monsters or demons looked inJapanese folklore back then, or one of
the ways that they that they thatthey looked. Anyway, the second you
said that, I saw exactly whatyou mean. For anyone who might not
know, to try and give youa visual reference, it's kind of like
the body of a gorilla. Wouldyou say the face is sort of like
(45:52):
a cross between like human and lion. Yeah, with googly eyes that don't
look in the same direction. Andthen he had horns correct, right,
Yeah, he's a really wild lookingcharacter. The way he acted in the
show was sort of like all overthe place. Right. We get into
this battle scene. What happens withthe Indigo crystal? What's going on?
(46:15):
Initially Tuxedo Mask tries to get it, but or he knocks it away,
but then Zoocide orders the monster toattack to attack him, and then well
that's happening as all a side grabsit and then goes into the woods and
then disappears right after mocking Um TuxedoMask. Okay, so that's another one
(46:40):
for the niggaverse. What's our talleyhere? Do you know? I think
doesn't Tuxedo Mask just still love one? And I think I think Um Barrel
still has more than anybody else does. Probably this will be fun for everybody
because they can try to do itwith us. Let's go back and think
about the Rainbow Crystal episodes. Thefirst Rebo Crystal was in Game Machine Joe.
(47:02):
Who got that one? I thinkthat was Zowah Site? So one
for Zoe Saite, who got theone from Bobo the Vulture, the punching
guy. Yep, who who gotthat one? I think that was that's
Tuxedo mask? Yeah, so onefor Tuxedo, one for Zoisite Red Orange
(47:23):
Yellow? Who was our yellow Crystal? Was that the was that rio might
have been? Which one? Wheredid his go? I know that Usagi
it just has one, So maybethat's that's the one, I think,
I think, so we'll go withthat one. What about Vena Zowah site
(47:46):
still got that one? Yeah?Is that? Two? Or three for
Zoisite twelve? Three? Now threeincluding today? Right? Yeah? Who?
And then last week would have beenum the Rita the science one?
Who got that one? Oh?I thought I thought that was the last
(48:07):
one you mentioned. Yeah, SoI think Zoe site still has maybe three
or maybe it is four. Thisis so hard to remember. I'm going
to figure it out and I'll andI'll insert the italitly here, so so
everybody knows the official rebow crystal tallyis. By the end of this episode,
Zoe Site will have four rainbow crystals, Tuxedo Mask will have one,
(48:30):
and the Scouts will have one.Six have been revealed. Okay, cool.
What was sort of something that's kindof unique about this battle? It's
oh, well, yeah, Iguess it's it's there's a lot like Usaki's
not really around for it. It'smore it's more centered on the monster version
(48:52):
of her grandpa. Just fuck upstuff. Queen Barrel will be thrilled.
Got you again, Kate boy,You're not getting away with that crystal.
Really? Don't you ever stay tofight your own battle? Zoy Site?
(49:15):
Oh why should I woman? Howshe disappears so fast? I went again,
(49:36):
Tuxedo Mask, but watch your back. When I return, I'll come
for you. That was one thing. Uh what else? Let's see so
some things I noticed we got tosee, like the start of a moon
Tiara, but it doesn't happen becauseshe shows up, but she doesn't realize
who the monster is right away, and the monster is weakened by Ray,
(50:00):
not Sailor Mars. So Ray ispart of the battle but never actually transforms
transforms. Yeah, probably to protecther identity, I guess. So that
was something that I thought was kindof interesting. The way the battle went
down. It was less formulaic thenI think I remember them being like I
think the I don't know, howdo you feel aren't the battles a lot
(50:20):
less straightforward than you remember? Sometimes? Yeah? Yeah, I suppose,
because I think it's easy to justremember the like stock footage and not all
the little nuances they do with everythingelse. Um, what does that mean?
Mha, Grandpa saved moon healing activation? Oh okay, so he gets
(50:45):
saved. What we see Lida andRay again for like they're only in this
episode for two seconds twice. Whatare they doing here? Oh, Leda
and any Yeah, yeah, Lydaand Ammi they just show up before or
they just oh no that yeah, that's that's after the battle and stuff.
Yeah, they come back, umto see if things are okay again,
(51:08):
and they when they walk up tothe stairs, they see that things are
are fine. Yeah. They kindof stop at the bottom of the stairs
and they hear fighting and the Englishone and they're like, it sounds like
everything's back to normal. So muchfighting Um cut to we actually see Grandpa,
Serena, Ray, and Chad together, and Serena and Chad in the
(51:30):
English one. Grandpa's Chad is like, do you remember what happened? And
then he's like what, and Serena'slike, oh, you turned into a
monster just tells him, and thenRay's like, we're not supposed to tell
him that, and and then thenit's just like, never mentioned again that
they revealed that that happened. Boyfighting Mount show makes me hungry me true,
(51:59):
I wonder if you're Paul, showme how to do that transformation thing,
how to do what chat into thatbig old red lovester thing you problems
not to tell him about it?Remember what happens with Chad and Ray?
Here she kisses his cheek, justsaying, but he was really courageous last
night. And then Yusaki obviously teasesher after that, and then the episode
(52:22):
ends with everybody like chasing each otheraround, and then it closes on like
an end screen of all of themtogether. Oh, Chad, do you
think you're about ready to go backto the real world now? No,
he should stay. Well, I'dlike to hang with Grandpa and get back
to my music. Oh okay, not singing got the point. That's a
(52:43):
mistake. I had a vision andit showed me why you came here.
It was to get over your stagefright, and you did it. Oh
I feel so I'm raising in myheart. I've got to sing. I'm
cured. I can go on stageagain, and maybe you could go on
tour with him as a backup singer. Stop trying to fix me up with
(53:04):
chat already? Would you the onlyguy I'm interested in? His Darien.
Nothing's gonna change yet to Rock Store, You're gonna see star Stop. But
Ray, I've told you one thousandtimes you can't date until you're at least
sixteen. Why do I put upwith you? I want to hear my
song maybe another time. Sounds tome like Selena and Ray managed to patch
(53:29):
things up between you. I neverthought i'd love to hear the mark you.
Yeah, it's really cute something.I don't know if they mentioned it
in the other one, but theybring up the fact that Ray and Darien
are also together because she kisses himand then it's like she's teasing her.
(53:50):
She's like, Darien's the only onefor me, and I forgot they were
even dating. That's how like unimpactful. I guess the relationship is um show.
All right, A lot happened inthis episode in a very short amount
of time. I feel like it'sanother one of those did you feel like
that at all? I mean itwas, I guess so, but it
(54:12):
was fine, like it moved alongwell. I think I need to start
watching them twice because I think scramblingto take notes during it might be making
them feel that way. So outof curiosity, next week, I'm gonna
try doing that, like, justdo it a cold, just watch it
to enjoy it, and then dothe notes because it'll give me a better
reference point. Anyway, what wouldyou rate this week's episode three? I
guess three and a half. Ithink it comes into a solid three for
(54:37):
me. Why do you think threeand a half because even though I probably
would have just set a solid threeconsidering the art style, but even with
that, there's still a lot ofgood action moments, and I like how
most of the fight was again nota typical fight, and it centered more
on the monster wreaking havoc without beingin a that at all, and Ray
(55:01):
almost being killed by it. Thatwas more interesting. Okay, I think
that's fair. I say solid three, it loses the half start for me
because I kind of agree with youon that. And then I also think
Chat is really charming in this episodewhen I love his character, but the
amount of screaming in it in theEnglish deep version was kind of a lot
(55:23):
for me to the point where itkind of was like, yeah, it
was like making it hard to enjoyit at times because I was like,
Okay, get it, Like Iget that they're fighting, like you know
what I mean. And I thinkit's nothing against the voice actors because that's
what they were instructed to do too, you know. But I think that's
(55:44):
where it loses the point five forme. Otherwise, like, conceptually,
I really do like this episode. My favorite point, I think is the
way they ordered it, where itwas like action in the beginning, a
little bit of plot action, alittle bit of plot like it kind of
up and down. But I'm alsoglad they don't do that every week because
(56:05):
that wouldn't be that I would gettiring. Yeah, all right, let's
do The sailor says, raised Grandpasure wasn't acting himself today, but he
has good reason. Lots of kidsaren't patient with older people. Some have
hearing problems or can't move as fastas we'd like them too, but they
also have years of experiences we haven'thad. With all that living comes lots
(56:28):
of wisdom and lots of stories abouttimes long before we were born. Don't
miss out and what older people haveto give us. Sailor Moon says,
by now, this one was kindof funny because if you, okay,
let me read my notes and thenI'll deliver it a different way and you'll
(56:49):
see why. The sailor says,it's about being patient with older people.
Sometimes they have limitations that young peoplecan't understand, but they also have a
lot of wisdom, so it's likeworth getting to know them, listening to
them all that kind of stuff. You can also read this one or interpret
it as sometimes older people are difficultand crazy, but sometimes it's your job
(57:12):
to take care of them when you'reyoung, and you might not get it,
but do what I like. Itwas so like, I don't know,
it just it came off a littlebit weird, of like it was
basically telling kids, we know you'relike the old people in your life are
super annoying, but you should likethem anyway. So how can what can
(57:36):
we do with a discussion on this. Let's just make the discussion. I
don't know what the correct term is, like because they said older people slash
old people, but like, isit elderly people? What do they like?
You know what I mean? Idon't know what they want to be
called? What do you what?Let's make it senior citizens. Talk about
(58:00):
that. Yeah, this is hardto speak on because we're both fairly young
in terms of the world. Butlet's do this. Let's let's think of
like one thing that you would say, and let's classify senior citizens as like
genuinely someone who would literally get likethe senior citizens discount at a restaurant.
(58:20):
Just to keep it simple. Sothink we're not making any judgments. The
restaurant judged you. It's not me. But what is something that you could
say, like from a person inthat age group outside of your family,
a really valuable thing you've learned fromsomeone older? Just uh, I guess
I I'm probably tied in from aninterview standpoint, um, just because a
(58:44):
lot of a lot of the musicindustry people especially that I've done, are
all like I think, they're allin their sixties. Some of them are
in their seventies. Just you know, if you keep yourself clean and you
(59:05):
don't do anything dangerous, and youjust make good decisions all throughout your life,
then you'll feel better by that age, and you'll be able to have
like a lot of memories to cherishand tell stories about and walk you know,
walk back on in your own mind. So I guess that's something I
(59:29):
would say. That's kind of ahard concept to digest, Like, it's
really interesting, though, What doyou how can we simplify that a little
for people listening? What do youthink can we give it like a fable
message? Do you know what Imean? I guess a simple way of
saying it would just be it soundslike what they're saying. Well, the
first thing I think of is likea thing people used to say is keep
(59:51):
your nose clean, kid. Yeah, you know what I mean, Like
when they would meet a kid thatthey thought high a lot of promise,
they might tell them that that's that'ssort of an old timing spression. Do
you know what that means? Imean, I know you could say that
it's in reference to coke, butnot like, not just to that specifically.
Don't say it again. Sorry Ilost you for a second. Oh,
(01:00:13):
I mean I know that you couldyou know, say that it's in
reference to not doing cocaine, butI know specifically about that. No,
it's not. It's it's kind ofwhat you are referencing where it's like there's
different levels of understanding. I thinkthe basic level of understanding is like,
if you're not doing things that youknow already are wrong, going to sleep
(01:00:36):
at night, it's going to beeasier, and it leaves a lot of
room in your life to do thingsyou know are right and create good,
positive memories right to look back on. But there's further wisdom in not doing
things like that because like another levelof understanding is that the world is full
of people who are have all kindsof motivations, right, and some people
are just looking for that thing toget on you so they can try to
(01:01:00):
use it to control you, right, But if you don't have that thing,
they can't get it, do youknow what I mean? So like
people can come at you and try, but if you know in your heart,
like what they were saying, thatyou're a good person, do you
live your life to the best ofyour ability, and you leave room for
yourself to grow. People can't gettheir claws in you, and you can
(01:01:22):
live a free life. And then, like they're saying, when you get
older, wouldn't you rather look backon that than a life of, like,
I don't know, always looking overyour shoulder because of that last messed
up thing you did. Like thatdoesn't sound that doesn't sound fun. Yeah,
it sounds exhausting. Actually, Idon't know. Do you have anything
to add on that subject. No, it's kind of a tough one.
(01:01:45):
I liked the sailor says, because, especially if we bring it into the
terms of the nineties, I thinkgenerational gabage was as wide as it ever
has been. Maybe more so though, because at least now we do have
the ability need to communicate more easilywith each other, you know, So
I'm sure there's a little more bridgingthe gap going on than there was before.
(01:02:07):
But it was like, yeah,I'm sure kids had no clue why
older people did most of the thingsthey did, and why not give them
a little perspective, right, Notthat I don't know who paid attention to
these I feel like I might havebeen like the only kid who took them
that seriously at that age. Idon't know, but yeah, that's it
(01:02:31):
for this episode. Most Jeffanese titleagain. Oh, it's a Grandpa loses
control Ray in Danger. Grandpa losescontrol Ray in Danger versus Grandpa's follies.
I mean it's another one of like, this is what happens and then kind
of a not so great deep title. Yeah, both of the titles are
(01:02:53):
kind of whatever. All right,Well, I guess that's it for this
week. Do you have anything comingif you want to let people know about
just stuff that just happened just afew days ago. My last interview was
with Julia, a woman named JuliaGoo who is the next new character,
(01:03:15):
and Genshan impact Kiara. The updatecomes out in three days, I think,
so it'll be out by the timethey get this. It'll be about
a week since. Okay, yeah, and I'm I don't have anything set
in stone yet, but I afterdoing her, I'm only three interviews away
(01:03:35):
from three hundred people. I sawthat post on YouTube, but we're holding
up the three fingers. I lovethat. Three interviews away from three hundred.
Congratulations and for people we've said itbefore, but for people who might
have forgotten, remind them when youstarted. Yeah, so my first interview,
(01:03:57):
my first interview technically was I thinkin June or July of twenty twenty.
So I'm sure they'll end up it'llat least be a like exactly on
the nose of three years. ButI don't know, depending on how things
go, I'll probably end up kiddingthree hundred before I officially started. So
(01:04:19):
who knows. Wouldn't it be interestingif it landed on June thirtieth, Yeah,
his birthday. We'll see what happens. I'm curious because I find like
the way numbers come up kind offascinating sometimes. Yeah, so we'll have
to see. Let's keep tabs onit, and I'm excited for that.
That's a really good milestone in avery short amount of time. And everyone,
(01:04:41):
I hope you're going in checking outbecause I know, I'm sure you
guys have other interests outside of sailorMoon. You do a lot of diverse
interviews, so I don't know, over to Chris's YouTube channel and just kind
of, you know, put somein a playlist and watch them when you
want to watch something like that.I don't know. I mean, you
don't have to live your but I'mjust saying all right, is there anything
(01:05:03):
else you want to add about today'sepisode or anything? Oh well, isn't.
Um, you can cut this,I'm sure but oh yeah, isn't.
I'm sure you will. But allright, well, I'll let you
go. Thank you, We'll seeyou next week. Yep, bye bye.
(01:05:45):
That's it for this week's episode ofMoonstar, A Sailor Women Podcast.
Did you guys like this episode?Grandpa Foley's more less than Chris and I
We both came in around a solidthree three point five, and I think
a large part of it was thisepisode, while it has some great moments,
also has a lot of repetition andit. When I was going through
(01:06:06):
and taking the screenshots to create someof the art for this week and also
I'm going to share those with youguys as part of a visual journey for
the podcast, I noticed that, even aside from the fighting that I mentioned
being repeated a lot in the episode, the visual motifs were repeated frequently too
(01:06:28):
specifically so much running back and forth. I think it was a nod to
Scooby Doo, which happens a fewtimes in Sailor Moon, but by the
end of it, it was reallylike it was a lot of that,
like you'll see in the screenshot foldor album when I share that with you
guys, it's just count the images. I'm sure there's like more than ten,
(01:06:50):
and it's just them running back andforth and back and forth. And
the reason I took so many asI wanted to show how much they reuse
that during this episode. But yeah, there were still a lot of positive
aspects to it. I love Chad, I love the voice choices that were
made in the English version. Youguys got to hear a lot of that
(01:07:11):
today, and I think we gota lot more of Ray's character development in
her relationship with Serena or usage andthat stuff is important, So I do
appreciate the episode for that. Butyeah, it's a little more on the
wacky side. Even when there werepotential moments that could have been taken seriously
(01:07:32):
and elevated it, in my opinion, every time that came up, they
went for the funny option instead,And you'll even see that highlighted in the
screenshots as well, So go checkthose out. They're going to be shared
