(00:26):
cat? He's such a lazy bones. Of course, I could use a
little cat nap after all the trainingwe've been putting in. Take a snoot,

the Bunny slope alone. Hey there'sChad and Ray. Whoa, they're fast.
I hope I can ski like thatsomeday. Hey, you guys gotta

(02:20):
Sailor Moon podcast. I'm one ofyour hosts, Alex, and this week
we will be covering the thirty fourthepisode of the Deek English dub aka the
nineties dub of Sailor Moon titled SkiBunny Blues. For the time being,
moon Stars Classic episodic coverage is movingto a bi weekly schedule, so that
means you will be getting episodes likethis roughly every other week, and on

(02:44):
the off weeks we're going to bedropping things like the cast interviews, specials,
and any other type of episode that'snot, i guess considered a classic
Moonstar style episode, but not everyoff week will have an episode like that.
That's just going to be the schedulefor right now. That's just how
things are working out the best forus here to keep the episodes high quality

(03:06):
for you guys, and you guyshave always been an understanding audience, so
I'm not even really worried about that. However, you can tune into Keepers
of the Clow, which we'll alsobe dropping on the off weeks from Moonstar,
where you will get myself, Mattwho is my co host there,
and then on the podcast feed wedo Chris's Corner at the end, so

(03:27):
you'll get all three of us overthere every other week. So yeah,
if you're gonna miss us too much, you can do that. Also,
I'm very excited to announce that moonstarpoddot com will be the temporary home for
Sailor Moon's Sacrifice. Sailor Moon Sacrificeis a fan created manga which was origin.

(03:47):
It originated as a YouTube series createdby Kousu Studios, which was later
moved into the manga version that weknow today, and you will be able
to find high as galleries of Ibelieve Act one first. We might be
adding more soon, I'm not entirelysure, but that will be up by

(04:08):
the end of this week on moonstarpoddot com slash Sacrifice, So go ahead
over there and check out that, and if you while you're at it,
you might as well go and listento the first Moonstar Spotlight episode. We
did, which featured CALSU Studios. It's a fabulous conversation and you'll get to
learn all about what Sailor Moon Sacrificeis in detail before you go and actually

(04:31):
read it. So why not finalannouncement for today. Auditions for Sailor Moon
Another Story the series and Project GuidingCard are still underway. We are getting
closer to completing the cast for both. I believe there's one role left for
Project Guiding Card and maybe three orfour left for Sailor Moon. Another Story

(04:57):
the series, which will be drawbeing who knows when the production schedule on
That is sort of based on thecast coming together, what it looks like
for us to get lines turned around, and how long it takes for me
to edit them. So you're gonnajust have to wait on any dates for
that. But if you're interested inparticipating, go over to Casting Call Dot

(05:20):
Club and search for Sailor Moon,Another Story the series or Project Guiding Card
I will have links into in theepisode description and so a bit your auditions
directly via Castingcall Dot Plug. Yeah, let's get into this week's episode,
right. I'll see me at normallyjust saying how are you doing? But

(06:18):
I actually want to start with thething you des sent me. Can you
tell everybody because you have to describewhat it is visually so they know what
we're talking about. What is it? Yeah, it was just the drag
show that I was at at theusual place that I go to them for
here in Minneapolis, and one ofthe performers in the city that I'm friends

(06:39):
with, Avery he goes by AquaBolba is his drag name, and great
the costume that he's in for thelast number of the show last night as
a I guess it's like it's yeah, it's like it's a Strawberry Shortcake inspired
outfit and wig. That's why,Okay. I it took me a second

(07:00):
because first I was like, Ifeel like I should know what this character
is. I get that it's astrawberry and I got the silhouette kind of,
but it wasn't like clicking. Andthen as soon as you said Strawberry
Shortcake, I was like, oh, you're right, okay, because she's
a little girl, you know whatI mean, And this is a dry
queen. So I was just like, what is this? No. I

(07:21):
just personally love it because I reallylove fruit clothes, which so specific,
but My favorite shorts are banana shorts, but I also have like watermelon pattern
ones, and I have two bananashorts actually, And anytime I go to
like Target or Walmart, I'm alwayslooking, is there any clothes with like

(07:44):
fruit on it that doesn't look terrible? You know, I don't know why
I don't. I think that probablycomes from the Magic school Bus because it's
kind of a misfrizzle. It's veryher so I think that's probably that is.
But as soon as I saw it, I loved it for that reason
alone. And now I love thestrawberry shortcake reference because you know, I

(08:07):
like Rainbow Bright. It's kind ofalongside that a little. Back in the
eighties, it had a similar vibeto it, and it was popular among
a lot of the same people atthe same time. So it's something that's
always kind of been on my radar. Yeah, what if can people see
this? This is your story rightthis video? Yeah, And I mean

(08:31):
there's way more content on his actualinstagram. Aqua vol I think it's Aqua
Aqua Underscore Volvo. Yeah, sincewe're talking about them. When I am
editing this, I'm going to hearthis again, So future me ask Chris
for the Instagram info again like linksand all that, and then that we're

(08:52):
gonna need to post the video againbecause this will be like weeks and weeks
from now, yeah when we postthis episode. Yeah, it was just
a fun thing to see. Sowhat was that your week last week?
Or no, that was just fromlast night. Oh last night. That's
that's a fun weekend. Mm hmmm, a fun weekend thing. How have
you been besides the Strawberry Show.I've been I've been good. It's nice

(09:18):
too. That interview stuff is finallystarting up again. I had one this
past Monday night with Jeff Shine, who he's just starting to get more anime
parts now, but he's best knownfor being the voice of Carlos and Resident

(09:39):
Evil three the remake of it,and also he's Captain America in any of
the Marvel Avengers video game stuff. For one second, because my mind was
still on the Magic school Bus,I thought you were talking about Carlos from
the Magic school Bus. And ifanybody knows who that character is, they're

(10:01):
probably laughing really hard just because it'sso not at all anything like what you
were talking about. Yeah, anyway, so he when is that interview I
already did it. Oh, youalready did it. Okay, So that's
up for people to check out andsay his name again. Jeff Schein s

(10:22):
H I n E. Do youhave any upcoming ones? Yeah, I'm
doing a sequel interview this weekend withWendy Lee, who she's one of the
first interviews with the voice actor Iever did. She's my second to ever
one actually back in fall of twentytwenty. She's I think what most people
would say is the Queen of Dubs. She's Fave Valentine and Cowboy Bebop.

(10:46):
She's five Characters and fire Emblem. She's TK and Digimon, Jorwichi and Bleach
Soccer and Soccer Awards, Harrowhee andMelancholy of Harvecismia, and she's in the
Sailor Moon Redob she's Queen Serenity.Oh, we're gonna share that interview for

(11:07):
sure. I might. That's Iwas gonna do because we have another person
who did Queen Serenity as well thatyou have interviewed. Was it? Oh?
Is this her right? It's thesame one. Yeah, we talked
about it in the first interview too. That's right. Okay, when you
get this one done then, sinceit's a follow up, I think I'm
gonna put it probably right after theepisode where we get their history on the

(11:33):
Moon, because that's when we getthe most Queen serenity in season one,
I think, and probably the wholeseries. So that's a good place for
it. Even though it's the redoubvoice actress, I mean that's fine.
Oh, Barbara Riddecki is the otherone. Yeah, well, I'm gonna
maybe it'll be it'll be a doublefeature and yeah, I'll do both maybe,

(11:56):
but that I'm excited for that.I've always really liked Queen's Cony is
a character specifically, mm hmm.I don't know. I've always wanted to
know more about her life, andI don't Is there anything official about it?
Uh? Maybe, I don't know. I don't think so, though
I was wondering if they've done anythingin some of the new content. I
don't think so. Is there anysailor Moon news that you're aware of,

(12:20):
like new stuff? Yeah? No, Yeah. When I searched, I
just saw like top ten episodes thatread it said or whatever, and then
I started looking at it and Iwas like, I don't think I can
share this on the show this isnot worth it. There was I don't
I don't know what event it wasfor, but I did see in Japan
for some kind of thing that nowGo drew illustrations of Minako and Makoto on

(12:48):
Shikishi for I don't know if shewas like giving it to them, but
it was for the original voice actressesfor both of them, a Mei Shinohara
and Rika Fukami. There was somekind of they were displayed at some kind
of Sailorman event in Japan. Isaw on a Japanese Instagram. Oh that's
pretty cool. I'm sure we havesome listeners who also speak Japanese, so

(13:11):
they might want to check that out. And I don't know if they give
subtitles or I don't know translation, but so people can look that up.
There is one piece of news youtold me about actually about Terry Hawks.
Oh yeah, yeah. I don'tknow if i'll hear back from her.
I haven't yet, but that's it'scool to see that she's active on stuff.
Finally, because I saw I didn'teven know that until Rhett storied post

(13:37):
that she made recently. Then Isaw that she is like relatively active on
Instagram. And then she has awebsite that she maintains and updates. Now,
well, that just the fact thatshe is like active online in general
was the announcement I was excited about. But yeah, of course we've reached
out right, basically you have andeverybody listening cross your fingers, because we

(14:00):
we got to share the Sailor MoonNews interview, which happened very quickly,
I think at a con with her. But getting a full, like sit
down interview of your style that aremuch more in depth would be something really
great, and I don't think there'smuch of that with her. No,
Yeah, you ready to get intothe episode? Oh yeah. The only

(14:20):
other thing is my tattoo is onTuesday, so that'll be That's so funny.
I was thinking about that yesterday forno reason. It was just like
I had this random thought of yousaying like something about your next tattoo,
and then I was like, Ican't remember what he said about it,
and I guess it's like I thinkhappening soon. So there you go.

(14:41):
Yeah, well, are you excitedfor that? I assume no at all.
Yeah, you're like, no,I hate it, That's why I
did it. Well, congratulations onthat. Do you want to tell people
what it is. Yeah, it'sthe I don't know if I mentioned it
before, but it's I probably did, but it's the it's the male version

(15:01):
of Alier, which is the protagonistfor the most recent release New Line,
completely New original Fire and One gameFire and Moman Engage that came out last
this past January. I'm just gettinghis mostly just his head, but like
his neck up, neck and shouldersand head on the opposite side the on

(15:26):
the wrist side of my left arm, so the opposite side of where my
Haduka tattoo is. And you havethe same artist as you have for your
first one. Nope, it's somebodynew. It's a I think he's what
most people would probably say is thebest anime tattoo artist in the Metro area.
His name is Jared Kincaid. Hejust has a studio space near near

(15:50):
the Mall of America. I wasgoing to say, anime tattoos are kind
of a new genre with this likepast two generations and I have I was
wondering when that was going to becomelike, Oh, someone's actually known for
it, and it sounds like he'sone of the people. So if people
want to check him out. I'massuming they can find him on Instagram,

(16:10):
right, Yeah, it's a GE R R E D and then kinkaid.
Okay, I n C A ID all just all one word?
Does he? Does he have anyother Sailor Moon tattoos on display anywhere that
you know about? Probably I justhaven't. I haven't scrolled like really deep
into stuff. But I'm sure he'sI mean, he's been doing it for

(16:32):
twenty five years. I think,so he's Wow. Probably someone who's like
doom scrolls at night, go findout for us. Ben tells, I
don't have the energy for that, but well that's pretty exciting. There you
go. Yeah, all right. This week's episode is called Ski Bunny Blues.
Today on Sailor Moon, Ray andI have both set our sites on

(16:55):
winning the Miss Moon Princess contest, not knowing until too late. It's a
plot. I give a Queen Berylto lure and capture the Sailor scope.
Can we evade her trap and defeather evil minions. We'll be right back
and I'll show you which I thinkis the winning title, just because it's

(17:15):
got some nuance to it. It'scute. The word bunny and blue together
just makes me happy. I don'tknow why. Yeah, what's our Japanese
title? That's very just informational.Again, that's the Snow of the Mountains,
Friendship and Monsters. It's like itis, and it's sort of funny
when you just read it out loud, but when you look at it without

(17:37):
reading it out loud in text,it kind of paints an interesting picture actually,
if that makes sense. But assoon as you say it, you're
like, this is just listing things. Yeah, I think Ski Bunny Blues
is the cuter title. I thinkski bunny is an actual term, isn't
it. Yeah, let me let'slook up what that actually means. What

(18:00):
is a ski bunny? Thank you? Now? Ski bunny plural ski bunnies
slang skiing an attractive female at aski resort, especially one who is more
interested in being seen than in skiing. Okay, so that's literally Serena's character
this episode of Gotcha. Also,I'm just guessing the reason bunny is used

(18:23):
for this is because it's probably areference to Playboy. The Playboy Bunny in
up until I guess recently, wassort of like the signature image for beautiful
women for a very long time inAmerica. Uh, and so I imagine
that's where that came from. ButI'm just guessing. So if anyone actually
knows, feel free to shout usout. Also, that's not me trying

(18:47):
to be like looed or anything.I just know about that from watching The
Girls next Door on e So ifanyone knows what that show is, you
know why, I should understand why. I know what that is now,
which, by the way, foranyone who cares, two of them have
a podcast now, and Hugh Hefnerhas died at this point in time,
so they're just like going back andwatching the episodes kind of like we do

(19:11):
here, and they're just talking aboutit all and like revealing everything and it's
wild. So for anyone who's interestedin that, go check that out.
It's called Girls Next Level. Freeshout out to them. But yeah,
that's interesting. So now we allknow what a ski bunny is. I
think we all know what snow mountains, friendship, and monsters are, so

(19:33):
I'm not going to google any ofthose words. The Deep version starts with
a still frame at the Hikawa Shrinefor some reason, and then kind of
goes into the conversation that the girlsare all having there is how does it
actually intro I don't know why there'sa random still frame that's just now it's
the same thing. Oh okay,so I guess they were just like,

(19:53):
we need more time here. Whatare they talking about here? Sagi found
an advertisement for something called a MoonPrincess Contest and it's at a ski resort.
Ray imagines herself having a good timethere and winning the competition or whatever.
And then they make up some excuseof what they're gonna tell both the
cats from Minaco's suggestion, and andthen everybody goes along with it, and

(20:17):
then they wonder how they'll be ableto stay there. But then you each
hero shows up and they said thathe originally came to the shrine from those
mountains so that he would be ableto help them out. Hey, you
guys have gotta check this out,the Missmoon Princess Contest at the Pine Cone
Ski Resort. I gotta enter thisfor sure. Don't you think you want

(20:38):
to enter some ski bunny contest?I was hoping you'd want to make a
ski weekend out of it with me. Let me see that. Hey,
winner gets two weeks freeze. Soundslike a blast. I don't think Lunin
Artemis will be very happy knowing we'regoing off the play. Yeah, we're
supposed to be fighting the Negaverse, right. Besides, we'll never get a
room there at the last minute, don't we just see what happens when we

(21:00):
get there. People always cancel. You guys can stay at my place.
You have a place there. Actuallyit belongs to my parents. But I
go up all the time. Cool, Oh you're gonna come with us,
right, I always go up thistime of year to practice my drumming,
thang some new songs. So wealready had some changes. They took out

(21:23):
the fact that they're gonna lie tothe cats because I guess they don't want
to promote lying, so and Ikind of like, at first I didn't
catch it, but then as theediting of the episode went on, I
was like, I think they messedwith that storyline a little. But they
say that Luna and Artemis shouldn't havea problem with it, and they discuss,
like hoping they won't be mad thatthey're gonna go do this thing,

(21:47):
and then yeah, Chad shows upand it's like, oh, my family
has a cabin up there. Yeah, you guys can stay at my place,
and I'm this is my first note, like write out the gate about
animation. The animation is really highquality in this episode. I think it's
gotta be eku Eto. No,no, no, it's it's it's it's

(22:11):
Kagawa. Remember Eto did the lastepisode? Oh what, I think I
like Kagawa, which would give mea few others. He did again,
Yeah, he did. He's oneof my He's like my second favorite too.
He's Makoto's debut, Mars Versus Kat'sEye, Makoto's Dream Mirror Arc,
me Sure's debut. Oh wow,Okay, he's got some really good moments.

(22:36):
Yeah, because just all throughout there'sa lot of really cool animation choices
made that we don't always get.Especially regarding Chad, we get a lot
of shots of him where the eyesopen, Yeah, where we see the
whole face, and that's it's like, oh God, I don't know why

(22:56):
this just popped into my head.So we're all going to hear it in
Mean Girls, When What's her Facetells Aaron Samuels that he looks good with
his hair pushed back, it's likeBarry that moment for some reason, because
it's kind of like supposed to beshowing him as like I think up until
now he was this goofball character, and now that Ray is no longer with

(23:19):
Darien, he needs to be seenas like a viable option for her.
That's not a letdown, I guess, does that make sense. Yeah,
so they're trying to show like, hey, he's a good looking guy too,
he's just kind of insane. Ithink that was the purpose of them
doing some of that this episode. That's just what I get from it,
because this also later is the firsttime they address some things since certain things

(23:45):
have happened, at least in theDeek universe. Anyway, say his name
again, I need to burn itinto my brain. Dan. Yeah.
His full name Asashi Kugawa. Hhe he Sashi Kagawa. Yeah. Oh
my god. Names are so hard. It's not even just Japanese names,

(24:07):
it's all names, Like I justcan't uh yet. Well, kudos to
him because he's fantastic. I thinkhe's great. Right at the negaverse,
though, we see Evil Prince Darienand Malachite discussing something and they get into
kind of an argument here. Whatare they fighting about? Moonstar a Sailor

(24:30):
Moon podcast will return after these messagesand now more Moonster a Sailor Moon podcast.
This contest is an excellent idea. Those silly scouts will be lured into

(24:53):
it, for sure. They're notidiot's Malachite. It'd be hooviy to quit
underestimating their power. Zoicide didn't lookwhere it got her. Sailor Moon may
seem like a clumsy cry baby, but when push comes to shove, she's
tougher than any shee Lion, Iknow this plan will work, right,
Yeah, if you ask me,Malachite, the only way you're gonna get

(25:15):
that crystal is to lure Sailor Moonhere. And you're such an expert,
Darien, you know the only reasonI tolerate you is because of Queen Beryl's
orders. So I suggest you learnto keep your mouth shut. Got it.
I know what I'm doing. I'mgoing to get the Imperium crystal if
it's the last thing I do.That's pretty much just Kunzite saying that he's

(25:37):
the one who set up this contest, and then Mamuru says that he's underestimating
the girls too much, and thenhe just says that it just says that
whatever, it's gonna work out fine, and then he picks up a framed
photo of him and Zolocite and thisthanks to himself again that he's gonna finally

(25:59):
get it. We'revngish. It's sortof similar. It's more Darien saying that
Malakite's plan is just not going towork and the only way to really get
the crystal is to lure them tothe negaverse essentially, which they kind of
almost like make him sound way smarterin the end because that's kind of how

(26:21):
they have to do it. Butyeah, this is kind of the same
vibes though, And I thought itwas nice seeing Malachite kind of like with
the photo of Zoisite and him,Yeah, and you know, having that
backstory of a lost lover giving you, you know, energy to move forward

(26:41):
and all that is sort of interesting. This is another scene where it got
kind of mixed up. It's likethe plot line with the cat thing.
So in the deep one, Amyand Mina are sort of chatting and she's
like, oh, did Luna anartemist care that did this? And then
Mean is like, oh yeah no. They were like we can catch up

(27:03):
on our work whatever. That means, and then it just does one of
those weird deep nineties jump cuts toLuna and Artemis, like a sleep at
the house, and then it comesback and it's like that's it, and
it's it feels weirdly put in there. What happens in the Japanese after the
nigaverse thing it does? I mean, it's pretty much just it's the same,

(27:30):
it's a similar thing, but it'sLuna. Luna trying to say something
to Artemis, but then Artemis isalready asleep, and then she just thinks
to herself or says to herself that, oh, I hope the girls are
having fun and staying safe or whatever, and then it cuts back to the
skiing stuff. Oh okay, soI thought they lied to them, So
I guess they did end up tellingthem the truth. Well, I don't

(27:52):
know what the weird cuts are about. Then it's probably a timing thing,
actually, you know that, Ithink about it. But we get to
see Dad's cabin and it's super nice, and in the English, race says,
I thought you were just a slacker. I never knew you were loaded.
I thought was a funny way tosay rich. It's I don't think
people say that much. Now,maybe they do, but I don't know.

(28:17):
What's like the new slang for rich, and people still say that.
That's one of the things. Iwonder what else people say? It doesn't
matter. Flesh is like a reallyold, old and old timey term.
Let's see, what did you thinkof Chad's whole situation here? I mean,

(28:41):
it's filler, but it's a goodidea for a filler what I mean,
like, what do you think abouthaving his character have money but then
be like still at this shrine livingkind of, because the whole idea is
the juxtaposition of choosing to live inwhat some people might consider I don't know
what the right word is for ithumble, more humble than he has to

(29:03):
I don't know. And it's becauseof Ray essentially, right, Yeah,
yeah, I think it's good forhis character. Yeah, it helps that
he's not like living off her, right, Yeah, I think that adds
to him. But yeah, Ithought that was cool. And then we
get into actual skiing for the firsttime in the episode, which I thought

(29:27):
the animation for this was really cool. I have never skied. I've never
I've been on a mountain that hasa ski lift, but it was not
snowy at the time, and I'veonly seen snow like twice, so this
is kind of one of those Ohthis, I get to imagine what it's
like. Have you ever gone skiingor done any mountain snow sports or whatever?

(29:49):
I did skiing. We did anintroductory thing with it for seventh grade
as part of gen class. Besidesthat, I've never really had interest in
it. My dad is a reallywas or he still is, a really
good skier. What was the introductoryclass? Like? Just for people who

(30:10):
might want to know? Oh,it was just going around with skis outside
of the of the area that wasaround my middle school's ball field and track
and field, like the normally grassyarea that surrounds the fenced in actual field.
Did they teach you how to likesteer and stuff and go down?

(30:33):
And yeah, I see. Idon't understand how any of that works.
It seems super dangerous And all Iever see on YouTube are like random clips
yeah, like people getting buried inthe snow and stuff, and I'm like
why Yeah, But then again, people get eaten by sharks all the time,
so whatever, Yeah, I'm noteating but you know what I mean?

(30:56):
All Right, skiing less dangerous thanswimming with sharks. You tell us
listeners, that's what I want toknow. Oh, this is out.
Can you explain because they mentioned thisa double black diamond slope and that they
were going to do something like that, what does that mean? That just
means for someone that's really advanced, having a terrain, a skiing terrain that

(31:18):
isn't all just one level and there'sterms that you can go and the sport
pretty much just means people that arereally experienced. Okay, that makes sense.
And then we see Malachite with somebodyand it's a I wrote down ski
instructor, but I don't know thatshe's really an instructor. I think she's
just like another ski lady that's goingto be in this contest, right,

(31:41):
I think so, yeah, Andshe's obviously working with the Negaverse. And
then I put here I wish theyput more explanation into where or when.
I guess these people are being turnedinto Negaverse monsters because they have it up
until this arc, and then nowthere's just humans that are monsters automatically.

(32:05):
Yeah, it's so weird. Idon't understand it, and I never really
thought that much about it as akid. But I feel like this they
sort of dropped the ball on theplot hole there. It was the tiny
bit. I do like her designthough she kind of for some reason reminded
me of even Gellian And I'm wonderingif she looks like any characters from that.

(32:30):
Not really, I thought you weregoing to say the officer Jenny from
Polkemon. Oh my gosh, shedoes. Though You're right. It's the
lips. They're like specifically drawn thesame way, and then it's like a
similar like face somehow. Yeah, she is very officer Jenny. Okay,
that's fun. I like love thatcharacter too. Officer Jenny was always one

(32:52):
of my favorites. Oh I didthis is like a fun fact, I
guess because and I included this becausethis was the type of thing that back
in the day they would have putin like one of those Sailor Meat Sailor
Mars Scout guide book things, becausethey had all kinds of random like facts
about the different Scouts and all that, like how sailor mercurytive sandwiches. And

(33:15):
in this episode, it's introduced tous that Mars is a great skier,
so that would be like a funsailor Mars fact that we first learned here.
I don't think it's mentioned at allbefore this episode or probably after.
Again. Yeah, but for anyonewho is, like, you know,
building fan content, that is likea fact that you can include about her

(33:36):
character to have her a little morefleshed out if you would like to play
with that aspect of her. Andyeah, as we expected, Serena is
a not a good skier. Sheis a ski bunny, which also the
nuance of that is Bunny being hernickname in the mixed version of the comics

(33:58):
which were released or the manga whichwas released in America at the same time,
and then also in Japan. Youknow how we have the saying man
in the moon. We ever heardthat? Yeah? Okay, in Japan,
it's the rabbit in the moon, which is why her motif is bunnies,
which is why the nickname bunny waslike given to her in the English

(34:20):
manga. So there's all of theselike through lines with the title and everything,
and it just makes it extra cuteto me. But yeah, apparently
this ski lady I don't know whatto call her, so she has like
several names. In my notes, this time. She's a Negaverse ski lady
and she is part of this raceas well, and what does she do
once it starts? Moonstar A SilaMoon Podcast will return after these messages and

(34:52):
now more Moonster a Syla Moon Podcastthree. Serena, use your snoop wall
ms slowly down, excory where you'regoing, trying to narrow the field of

(35:23):
competition a little. Locals where'd thosegoing from? Oh? I could swear
those weren't there before. Maybe that'swhat the guy meant by nuke jumps.

(35:46):
Huh No, way late, now, Serena, you're the one who had
to come up here. There areonly two skiers left, so one's got

(36:09):
to be the keeper of the ImperiumSilver Crystal. She makes the terrain very
bumpy, so everybody else but yNusagi ends up falling over and then it
ends up just being them, andthen by the end of it, she

(36:30):
makes a giant snowball trail after themtoo, and then doesn't take very long
to transform into her monster form andthen raise up a bunch of elevated ice
walls that to trap the girls.Yeah. Can you describe her monster form?

(36:53):
Yeah, it's very witchy looking. She has purple skin and yellow eyes
and vampire teeth and this dark blue, wild witchy hair, and then her
body and shoulders and frame and allthat is like a snowman, and then
she has she uses icicle swords toattack. Yeah, she's kind of made

(37:17):
out of little snowmen, right,And one of the nuances I liked about
this monster was that when she movesand does things, the like faces on
the Snowman kind of react and stuff, which is really cute. And also
this is not one of several thingsthat remind me of it, but the

(37:37):
build of the monster, she kindof looks like she's built out of the
little Snowman and Super Mario sixty fourthe ice level like in the beginning,
and I'm my mind goes straight therebecause again this game. That game was
popular at the time, so Iplayed a lot of it when I watched
the show, but I always rememberthinking it she looked like she was made
out of the Super Mario sixty foursnowmen. And they also had the rolling

(38:00):
like snowball thing which happens in thatlevel, and all kinds of stuff that
was very similar to it. Sothis is, I don't know, this
episode is kind of like, howwould this is a filler? But it's
a character development, right, Yeah, yeah, I think it's a really
good filler episode though. Serena andRay end up trapped in the snowcasm that

(38:22):
this munster has created, and theykind of have a long dialogue here what
is the conversation like in the Japaneseversion Once it gets Once Ray stops trying
to climb out, she notices thatUsagi is playing the music box, and
then she tells her that she's movedon from being attached romantically to Mamru and

(38:51):
that she has to Usagi has tobe the one to pursue him, or
you know, if she doesn't,then Ray will fight her. She says
that in an endearing girlfriend kind ofway. Yeah. She just says that
in general or overall, that theyhave to both get out of this and
be strong, and she has tocontinue pursuing Mamaru, and she knows that

(39:13):
Usagi can get through the possession thathe's on her right now. The general
message is similar, it's a littleless specific in the Deek, although they
do address the fact that Ray usedto be with Darien and she's a lot
instead of like she was basically pushingUsagi to you know, fight for him,

(39:36):
right, She wasn't really serious thatshe's going to go after him,
I'm assuming in the Japanese version, but it's kind of like a way to
motivate her. They chose not touse that, so they changed it to
her basically being like, oh,I'm fine with it, and we were
great but nothing like you guys areand all that stuff, and you know,

(39:58):
I'm just basically glad we're friends.I don't know. They made it
a lot more sweet, I guess, yeah, rather than like sassy helpful.
I don't know, Yeah, youknow what I mean. I think
the Japanese version is more accurate toRay's character, though clearly because it's the
original. But what happens when Rayis about to transform, Ui Heuro pops

(40:22):
out of one of the snow icewalls and says that he that they should
follow him, and the monster showsup and says that Ray must be Sigular
Moon because she is athletic, attractiveall that, and then Utus really surprised,

(40:43):
and then Usagi says that the monster'swrong, and then the monster attacks
them, and you each Euro stepsin front of them and then gets frozen
yeah, and all of this isanimated especially well. I thought the frozen
Chad thing was really well done forsome reason. I don't know why.

(41:06):
I think it's hard to draw believablyfrozen without making it look like goofy and
it didn't look funny. Yeah.Really, it was like a very serious
and oh I made a note.We get a lot of really well done
backgrounds in this episode as well. But during the fight, how would you

(41:29):
describe it? It's like something changeswith the background. I think it.
Yeah, I know what you mean. It's that just I noticed that that
that that tends to happen. Wheneverthey're in the middle of a fight.
It'll make it'll make the the waythat whoever it was made the background,
it's not really the same as itwas before. It's more artsy or whatever

(41:57):
they whatever they did in soilor Moonwhenever they were still fighting a normal terrain,
but in the middle of a battle, they kind of made things more
artistic just because they could. Yeah, and I think it's similar. It
reminds me of like when they wentto another dimension before, but it's not
supposed to be that. And thenI was wondering too, because by the
end of it it's nighttime. Itmight have just been like them doing different

(42:22):
lighting as the sun is going down. Maybe I don't know, Oh you
know what. It probably was soit didn't just jump from day to night
and there was like this weird inbetween moment where you don't know what's happening.
Yeah, I don't know. Itstill works, though, I thought
it looked really cool. And finallyMars transforms. I made a note that

(42:45):
Katie Griffin's delivery of Mars Power. For some reason, in this instance,
it's a little like over the top, like there was a little too much
bumph behind it, and I justlike to imagine that this is take thirty
and by this point she's just like, oh my gosh, we have to
get this over with, and she'sjust like really belting it in there.

(43:07):
And for some reason that was theone that they went with because usually hers
are some of my favorite I'll puta clip in here, A Moonstar,
A Sailor Moon Podcast. We'll returnafter these messages, and now more Moonstar,

(43:39):
a syl the Moon Podcast. Holdit right there, Oh Darmy,
you came for us, Please callme Blizzard. Might as well get friendly
before you go into the deep.Free. I know your verses behind that.

(44:00):
This whole contest was totally bogus. That's right, Sailor Moon. Hand
over that, Krista, you're talkingto me. Don't play dumb with me,
you little twitch. I know you'rethe princess. It's written all over
you. Well I am kind ofa princess at heart. Ian, no
point in being humble about it.What are you talking about? I thought

(44:22):
you were just a karate cho creams. Sailor Moon stop, I know im.
You confuse me, protect you. He's frozen solid. Come on,

(44:42):
Serena, let's put this ice queenback on ice. We get a unique
battle this week in the sense thatwe only have two scouts clearly who are
Moon and Mars And how does thisall go down? Ray uses fire Soul,
but it does. The monster justdodges it, and then the monsters
about the or another spear. Butthen Mamaru shows up and throws now black

(45:07):
Rose, they've been black for liketwo or three episodes now, but does
that, and then he's about toattack the girls, and then both Ray
and Usagi get dough wide and saythat, oh you can't. You can't
attack because there's a sailor Moon whoyou were in love with or that you

(45:30):
care a lot about. And thenhe hesitates, and the monster shows up
again and tries to attack again, and then he throws a normal colored rose
to break their break the monster's icespear, and then Usagi does her normal
normal thing. Yeah, and Imade him note that for the Mars Fire

(45:51):
ignite. In this we get alot of extra sound effects, I think
in a deep version, because itsounds like they added some of the Jupiter
thunder sounds into it. Hey thatI think they wanted to elevate it because

(46:15):
it was just the two of themthis battle, to give it a little
more like pow. I like thatstuff. That doesn't bother me, But
I just it was an interesting I'massuming that's a change. I don't think
that's in the Japanese one. Wasthere thunder sounds in hearth Fire Attack?
No? Okay, yeah they addedthat. Actually it sounds a lot like

(46:37):
the the intro of the song, like the English Sailor Moon theme song,
where it has that kind of likethunder crackling at the beginning, do you
know what I mean? Yeah,I think it might actually have been that.
I don't know. And then alsoI just noted that Tuxedo says specifically,
I saved you this time, butthat doesn't mean it'll happen again,

(46:57):
solidifying that they're enemies. And Inoted that he's sending a lot of mixed
signals yep, which, to befair, is not his fault. Fair
enough, because like when you're gettingbrainwashed by an evil organization, I don't
know how much can you do aboutthat. But I kind of appreciate the
back and forth with the Red Roseand the Black Rose. What do you

(47:17):
think of that whole tug of wargoing on? Yeah, I think it's
cool. Do you prefer the blackrose esthetically over the Red Rose? Probably?
Honestly, I'm not gonna lie.I have the VHS box right in
front of me for this that thisepisode is on, which there's two more
left on this. I forgot totalk about it last week, but it

(47:38):
has Tuxedo mask on the front, which is rare in and of itself for
the box art, and he's holdinga black rose, and that has always
made this one of my favorite ofthe season one boxes. Yeah. In
addition to that, though, thebackground colors are kind of this like pastel
blue and pink with stars patterns onit, and it's kind of reminds me

(48:02):
of like tricks yogurt for anyone whoeverhad that. Yeah, it looks like
swirly tricks yogurt with stars in thebackground. It's just a really cute box.
It's called Field Trips and it's volumenine, And unfortunately it's turned out
to be one of the more rareones from season one to the point where

(48:24):
I don't think I've seen one appearonline in over like six months, which
is which is kind of a whilefor any of these. So if anyone
has one, congratulations, I wouldhang on to it because you might not
be able to get it back. After the battle, What's up? What
happens? Uwi Chirou comes to Theylit up a fire once I got out,

(48:47):
and then he asks what happened, and Ray says that they were saved
by the Sala soldiers and oh andthe Newsagi. Yeah, Usagi says that
he also helped and he was reallycool, and then Ray, when he
says it again for a validation,Ray says that yeah, he was kind

(49:07):
of cool, and then that's enoughfor him, and then the rest of
the girls show up when they askwhat was going on Ray goes back to
her and Usagi's usual relationship as afront and this says that Usagi pretty much
just says that Usagi messed everything upand that's why they got lost from everybody

(49:29):
else and whatever, and then Usagijust starts whining about it, and that's
how the episode ends. It's prettymuch the same. There's a couple things
I wanted to Oh, can youhear me? Okay, okay, There's
a couple of things I wanted tonote on that animation wise, Like I
was saying before, it's nighttime now, and this whole conversation takes place around

(49:51):
a fire under a street lamp, which is an interesting thing to animate lighting
wise, because you have to reallythink about the colors and the shaft I
would imagine. And I think thathim, I think he really did this
specifically extremely well. So I justkind of wanted to highlight that, and
I'm gonna probably share some moments ofthat for people to look out on the

(50:16):
Facebook page. But that was oneof my favorite moments just esthetically from this
episode was the ending. Thought.I thought it looked so cozy, you
know what I mean? Yeah,And you just kind of wanted to be
part of that group in that circle, and like be I don't know,
that's sort of a vibe that thisshow gives a lot though you just kind

(50:36):
of want to be their friend.Anything else here? Oh and in the
English they just made another Bunny referencewhere they close it by Ray saying they'll
go to the Bunny slopes for Serenabecause she can't handle the harder stuff.
And again I thought that was likea cute, nuanced reference. So yeah,

(50:58):
all right, we have to ratethe episode in list there's anything else
you want to add about it?No, all, what rating would you
give this one? I guess forwhy four? The animation is good,
it's one of the episodes that Ialways remember. It's fun charter development for
Osaki and raised relationship which you hadn'treally you hadn't really seen them be playful

(51:23):
and teasing with each other or notnot be playful and using with each other
yet, so it's a it's thosefactors. For me. I think I
would rate it as a four, just like standalone, if that makes sense.
But it kind of gets a bonusstar for me, just because I
don't know why this always sticks tomy brain like I always can remember this

(51:46):
episode, it's something about the animationbeing so good. I think it's something
about them being out of the typicalscenery similar to the Haunted Mansion episode that
sets it apart very easily. MemoryI like whenever we get Ray and Serena
just having a bonding moment, soit gets bonus points for that as well.

(52:08):
So I honestly, it's like afiller five star. I don't know,
can that be like a special category? Like yeah, like does that
make sense? Like should it even? Should it matter that it's a filler
episode? Does that? Does thatmatter at all? Some people don't like

(52:29):
them, I guess not. Imean some of them are pretty like they
can be crap for sailor Moon. There are bad ones, but this is
a good one. Yeah, Iagree with that. I'm just gonna get
it five stars, screw it,five stars for this episode. I really
enjoy it. The animation is spectacular. It has a lot of moments I
think worth just looking at visually justto enjoy them. And it's a fun

(52:52):
one. That's like if you're gonnakind of just watch a few highlight episodes
from season one and you want toinclude a handful of quote fillers, that
also give you really good development. This would be one to include, I
think for sure. All right, the sailor says to dance, Sailor Moon
Ray and I thought really hard towin the Miss Moon Princess contest. It

(53:15):
got kind of ugly. But itdoesn't have to be that way. That's
right. There's no reason why peoplecan't compete with each other and stay friends.
The main thing is to keep itin perspective. It's just a competition.
Have fun, and when it's allover with, you're still friends.
And that's what Camp if. Owningthose two fund of their own advice.

(53:40):
The sailor says this week is aboutfighting between friends during competitions. They basically
say, have fun with it.It's just a competition. Don't get so
serious. And I made a notethat this sailor says was exceptionally short.
It was basically one maybe one anda half sentences long, very short,

(54:00):
and probably was cut for time becauseI think this episode had so much that
couldn't be cut out elsewhere, andthey usually have to cut something just for
American time slots, So that's probablywhy the sailor says was short. This
week you start, what do youwant to say about competitions and fighting and

(54:22):
all of that kind of stuff.I didn't really have that in school and
growing up because I was never intosports, and nowadays I don't really have
any reference for it because even thoughthere's other people on the internet that do
what I do in terms of theinterviews and like focusing on anime voice actors
specifically, nobody has ever been likerude about it or it's all been supportive.

(54:49):
Anybody else that I've an encountered thatdoes the same thing, and yeah,
so I just I just have apositive perspective on it. I think
it's another thing too that as yougo or you lose, you lose the
need to really be competitive for anything. I guess my experience with competition would
just be, like I said,I think I've said before, my parents

(55:10):
put me in a lot of sportsthat I didn't want to play when I
was a kid, and I hadto do those, and I just was
there's something in my personality that's likeif I don't want to do something and
I can't logically see a reason whyI need to do it, which I
include factoring in how other people feelin that equation, You know what I'm
saying, but if I can't reallylike logic my way into why I'm required

(55:35):
to do something I just won't like. And when they wanted me to play
soccer, I remember they wanted meto play goalie, and the first time
someone kicked the soccer ball straight atme, I just walked away and I
was like, we're not doing that. This is not happening. So,
I mean, if I can becompetitive in certain ways, but I don't

(55:59):
think it's worth harming myself for anything, you know what I'm saying, Or
like put you know what I mean. I did a lot of music competitions
growing up, but they're unique inthe sense that you are rated against other
people, but it's an individual sportbecause you're like, you go in on
your own, if it's like asolo or whatever, and then you get

(56:22):
graded based on your individual performance andthen that's compared to other people in your
division. And at the end theykind of award several prizes and there's all
kinds of categories and stuff like that. So even when you like don't get
the top prize, a lot oftimes you still get something if you performed

(56:43):
well enough, like and then beyondthat, it's sort of it doesn't hurt
if you don't get a prize becauseyou're just kind of like, eh,
maybe it wasn't my year, orlike, I don't know. They also
would do shows after where the peoplewho won the top prizes would all perform,
and I got to perform in someof them and not in others,
and then the ones I didn't perform, and I was like, oh,

(57:05):
they clearly should have won, likethey're insane, you know what I mean,
Like you would have to be delusionalto deny that. So yeah,
I don't know, it's not thatcompetitive of environment, or at least it
didn't feel like that to me.That was not my experience with music competitions.
I think other people probably feel differentlyabout them. Yeah, all right,

(57:30):
well I guess that's where we'll endtoday's episode. Do you want to
add anything? No, my So, all right, We've got a couple
