Speaker 1 (00:00):
Or the Bison basketball coaches show glad that you're with us.
So happy to have a good crowd here with Bison
Nation on hand, Sam Niederman along with coach Dave Richmond.
Great to have you here. It's gonna be a blast tonight.
We are lying for the next hour and a half
or so. We'll get you home and kind of cozy
on up here coach. A little chili outside, but nothing
(00:23):
better than getting together with Bison Nation and having a
good time for the next ninety minutes.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I tried to bring the spirit with my golf hat
today because it was just it seemed like it was
golf weather, you know. I was talking to coach Johnson
today as we walked out. But yeah, the wind picked
up on us again, got a little cool. Ye had
forty degrees last week. That felt great.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah, I know we were looking like we were charged
towards springtime. But I guess we gotta keep paying up
the dues.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
The groundhog sawe shadow. Yeah, yeah, that's so West told
me the other morning.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yeah, do you buy into that?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
No? Yeah, I mean, but I don't know. It does
feel like Groundhog's Day right over and over and over again.
Isn't that that movie.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yes, yes, that's a good one.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Man.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Coach Richmond's here with us. We've got a lot to
do here tonight, Coach, as always appreciate you taking the time.
It's gonna be another big difficult week in the sumven
League with a couple of road trips, so we'll get
into those contests. Kansas City on Thursday. Omaha will be
the game on Saturday. We're also giving away tickets to
(01:23):
the women's game, which is a home game on Saturday.
Only one game for Jory's club coming up on Saturday
afternoon against USD. So if you want to get tickets
to the game, come on up, put your information in
the bowl, and we'll draw for a winner. At the
end of the show, Jory will join us at seven
and we'll break down some BIS and women's basketball as well.
(01:44):
Let's let's walk back through last week, coach. Obviously, not
the results that we were hoping for against two quality opponents,
and just your overall thoughts about the two games that
we saw.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, I mean the overall thoughts are you know, we've
got to we've got to get better, and it's it's
a little bit of and I told the guys this,
and I hate it, hate it coming to this, but
I said, I told you guys, you know it's it's
one of those I told you so. And we were
winning some games, but you'd heard me talk about how
I didn't love how we were playing. And it's it's
always about better and understanding those things. And sometimes it
(02:16):
takes getting smacked in the face to really realize that, Okay,
this is what he's talking about. And I'm hopeful, like
I'm disappointed that it took us getting smacked in the face.
We certainly played, you know, two very good teams and
take nothing away from them or no disrespect to South
Dakota State or Saint Thomas. But you know, as you know,
as I've been fortunate to lead this program, it's always
(02:36):
been about us and the things that we can control
and doing those things. And you know, we've we've got
to get back to some old habits and some basics.
So we've got to get more forceful, more play with
some some toughness, some edge offensively, and then we're we're
just you know, we're not where we need to be defensively,
and we've got to continue to trust. I think that's
(02:57):
the biggest thing that I can say with us defensively
is you know, we we are we're you know, for
lack of a better term, or like a zone defensive
football team. Right, and there's some things that over the
course of time that we're gonna give you a little
bit of the bend, don't break. And you know, we
need we need to make sure that we understand those
things and UH continue to trust our process as we
(03:19):
move forward.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
No doubt about it. When you look at the defensive
side of things, coach. Obviously we saw it on UH
on Sunday and and with the Saint Thomas game, there
is it a matter of the toughness piece. But then
also like trusting the principles and knowing if you stay
(03:40):
true to them, this formula is designed to give.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
You a back.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I mean, yeah, absolutely, And you know tomorrow is coming
on and we we talked about he says, Coach, you
watched a lot of college basketball. Yeah, it's on all
the time, right, it's on in the background here, and
and i watched hundreds of thousands of games and hours, right,
and I've never seen a shutout. And you know, even
going back and let's let's make light of it even
when we go back. We played o'kill last year, right,
and they scored points against us, right, And so you
(04:05):
have to understand that at times, you know, good offense
is just going to go ahead and score, and good
offense at times is going to be good defense, you know.
And so we're not trying to build an offense where
you know, you plug every single hole and then all
of a sudden you're doing nothing very well at all.
And our primary focuses and this isn't a new flashes
to protect our house, to protect our pain, to keep
(04:25):
the opponent away from the rim, not just for shots
at away from the rim, but you know, passes from
that inside at the rim back out, and it's hard
to trust. It's hard to trust when a team like
Saint Thomas gets going a little bit early. But they
hit ten in the first you know, first half, look
at their numbers. In the second half they went away.
But all of a sudden, now we start chasing them
off the line. We get on discipline in our stands
(04:48):
and some of those things, and now they're getting better shots.
And it's about continuing to reiterate those things to this group.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
And no doubt we'll be looking forward to a good
week of practice and putting it to the test again
against Kansas City and Omaha too. Great tests coming up
on the road here for the Bison men. You mentioned tomorrow,
we're gonna have him on the back half of the
show tomorrow, Wheeler Thomas fan favorite. People are always looking
to see tomorrow and DWT they've gotten, they've enjoyed. You
just see the crowd lighting up and smiling the last
(05:15):
two years or.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Things that I missed right now about tomorrow. But yeah,
you know that certainly, you know, as he's going through
the red shirt year and making sure he's one hundred
percent healthy, you know, and doing those things, you know,
and so it's all part of this journey for him
and for us.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah, it'll be cool to chat with him, absolutely, somebody
who's played since his freshman year, as you alluded to,
taking the red shirt this year to get back to
one hundred percent. But it's gonna be great to have
him on here in the second half of the show
as well. If you've got a question for Coach Richmond,

Alrighty ladies and gentlemen, welcome back on it to the
holiday in here in Fargo. It is the Bson Basketball
Coaches Show Live here with Coach Dave Richmond at six
o'clock and then we'll have Jory Collins at seven o'clock
to talk Bison women's basketball. Should be a great night.
We appreciate everybody coming on help and their support. I
see some Burger baskets that are making their way around
(08:44):
dollar baskets, right, eight bucks for a burger, beer and fries.
It's it's the best deal in town. Coach, can't beat it.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Well, plus they get the hang out with us too. Yeah,
that's probably the extra tip on top, right.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
I think so, I think so. I think think it's
a real good burger. So encourage everybody to go on
and get it and we'll enjoy here for the rest
of the show tonight. Well, Coach, we just kind of
recapped a little bit of last week. A couple of
specifics I was curious about just from what you taken
away reviewing tape and looking in depth at some of
(09:20):
the tactics of the game. First from yesterday against Saint Thomas.
That's a team defensively that's going to pressure the ball
a lot, try and string you out. They create a
few turnovers against us. What do you think is the
counter or the antidote to that if you see them
down the road and just that style of play in general.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yeah, I think it's it's it's a toughness, it's a
it's a ball toughness, being you know, being strong with
the basketball. It is a toughness to know. You know,
we just four or five times I can't remember, I
know for sure, for maybe five times we stepped on
the sideline right, and so did that pressure that they
were giving us just push us out a little bit?
We have to dictate and play on our terms a
(09:59):
little bit. And then I thought, too, we just forced
some things. I think you get down in that kind
of hole and all of a sudden you've you're you're
shooting for that fifteen point possession. What's not out there?
You need to keep playing the singles and talk a
lot in terms of baseball, Hit a single, you know,
get a steal, hit another, hit a double, and now
you're scoring somebody, right, And it takes time to manufacture
those things a little bit, and you know, I just
(10:21):
I just thought we we the the environment, they're pressure,
We got sped up a little bit, we didn't play
in our terms and and it felt like we were
making some strides and then we lost it again right
away at the at the start of the at the
second half a little bit, and just some uncharacteristic things
that good teams, good environments are going to do that
to you, and we've got to learn from them, because
you're you're you're darn right. You know, we we have
(10:44):
aspirations to be playing deep in March, and you know,
Saint Thomas is a good team. So there's there's a
really very realistic chance if those things are going to
meet up us and our aspirations and then continuing to
stay good, that we're gonna play them again. And we
need to be better.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Uh, only five free throws in the game. I'm sure
that was something that stood out in the box score
about that.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Yeah. Absolutely, And and and that's what I mean, where
the threes are this wonderful fad a little bit too,
and and and there's some guys that are very capable
and we need to continue to be that too. But
like the toughness piece. I think when you think toughness,
you think defense, right, you think buys in football defense
and offensive line play. Well, we we need to be
tough too, and run run the damn ball, as Timmy says, right,
(11:25):
let's run the damp ball, and let's let's get the
ball to the hole. And and when you do those things,
you allow yourself some offense rebound opportunities, You allow yourself
to get to the free throw line. And again, and
I just I hate saying this, but Saint Thomas had
us on our heels and we didn't play on our terms.
We can't be like that, and we've got to We've
got to get to our terms. We've got to dictate
(11:46):
to our opponent a little bit and get to our
spots and then be strong when we get to our spots,
and then go up and finish when we get to
our spots. And you know, it's something that's it's you know,
I mean, it's it's February already. But the moment that
I stop coaching, the moment that we stop challenging ourselves
for better is is the moment I'm done coaching, right,
And so we've got to take every opportunity starting tomorrow
(12:08):
morning to learn from this and get better and play
in our terms.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Oh, you mentioned tomorrow it'll be first practice of the week.
You talked about toughness being a piece that needs to
be emphasized. What does that look like when you're trying
to get that out of your group and practice.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Well, again, I think it's a it's a fine line
where a lot of it is just like, gentlemen, we've
done these things in the past, right, And that's what
good teams do, right. What great teams do is they
make that a consistent habit. And so it's let's go
back and revisit. Let's let's do these things and and
lock in and be consistent with with all these things
and do them over and over. And then you know
(12:45):
that this time of year too, you need to you
need to be you know, aware of the fresh legs
and the clear mind piece too. And so it's not
like we can just you know, run them to death
and do all those things. And some of it will
be some of it will be just you know, off
video of talking about situations. Here. We're here, guys, this
is this is a place we've been to before. We've
(13:05):
got to get back to this place and be consistent
in those habits.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Approaching now it's we're into the back half of league
and nine games in now at sixteen game schedule, So
hit the halfway point during the STSU game on Thursday.
What is that like for the program, the staff, the players.
When you're seeing teams now for a second time, and
you might look at the first game, no matter of
(13:30):
the result, to look at adjustments to be made and
then maybe what they might counter back with on the
other end.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, I think the first eight minutes or so, or
a few adjustments maybe from the first game, and maybe
a matchup thing. Again, so much of what we do
is about the buys in anyways, and in our game plan,
and so we might tweak a couple of things here
or there, a couple different counters offensively to the things
that we do. But I just you know, it's more
for the players of just they have a better feel
(13:57):
and a better better grap of the opponent's tendencies and
picking up on some of those things and and understanding like, Okay,
I might be able to attack this guy in that space,
or this guy really likes this move, and and those
are the things where you credit the guys that want
to learn and get better that you know they're making
a step. They're they're they're better than the first goal
(14:19):
around and that's all part of that second goal around here, no.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Doubt about it. Co Richman here with us at the
holiday and we're going to take another time out and
come back with more in the first hour. Also have
tomorrow Wheeler Thomas in the house. Gonna be great to
chat with him in just a little bit. This is
the BYS and Sports Network front leer Field.

Alrighty ladies and gentlemen, welcome back on into the holiday

Show on a Monday night. Glad that you're with us.
Coach Richmond here right now, Why don't we give another
round of applause for our guy tomorrow, Wheeler Thomas, who
is in the house. Great to see tomorrow here. He'll
be coming on the program in just a little bit
(18:06):
and we'll continue getting to know some of our players.
Coach has been fun all season, last season and in
years past, getting the guys on and putting on the
headset and chopping it up.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
You and I are really cool, but we're not quite
as cool as them, So I would imagine by the
nation wants to hear from them a lot more than
they do us. But yeah, tomorrow's a special one, a
special one for us and for me personally, So it'd
be great to get him a headset here as well.
I love it well, so we can get the headset
over the hair though.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Yeah, I think we can do it. I think we can. Yeah,
it's gonna be awesome, Gonna be great to talk and
maybe do some story time going back to some recruiting
and the last two and a half years now two
and a half seasons plus for tomorrow with us here
in the program. Just reminder, we also have tickets to
give away to the Bison women's game that is Saturday
(18:54):
afternoon against USD. Just come on up, put your information.
The bowl will draw for him at the end of
the show. Bids and women coming off of a nice
win against Saint Thomas over the weekend and they're still
in the hunt at the top of the Summit League standings,
and we've got our burger baskets back as well. Eight
dollars for a burger, beer and fries. Cannot beat it.
So glad to see everybody here enjoying it. What's your
(19:17):
favorite thing to grill on the summertime? Coach in honor
of the burger basket that we've got.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
You're mean, you're putting me on the spot. My wife,
if she's listening, she's laughing, like he doesn't grill anything
in the first place. She usually does most of that.
But you know, chicken, do some chicken, some burgers a
little bit. You know. We actually when the six of
us never are able at our house, right, just the schedules.
But for Christmas, the six of us and so grill
(19:43):
some steaks and that was really good. Just simple, just
keep it simple, little butter, little seasoning, you know, don't
screw up a good thing.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Yeah, if you got a good cut of meat, I
think you're good to go.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Absolutely, absolutely so. But no, I'm not a I am
absolutely spoiled. I married a farm girl and she's got
something on the table for us every night. She does
the cooking and all those things, and it works out
well for me. I'm spoiled, Like I.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Said, absolutely lovely. Shout out to missus Richmond back home.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Absolutely, this is Richmond. Yeah, that's and she makes some
pretty good cookies too. How much.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
That's good? That's good. A couple of questions that are
coming in for coach here on our text line. This
one comes in from Ron. We appreciate the textra on
this one's for you, coach. Has there been a certain
Summit League team and or player that has been a
surprise with their level of play so far in league games?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Oh? You know, I mean, I just there's a lot
of them, I suppose, Ron, And that's a great question.
I think just with the transfer portal, you're just seeing
some new, you know, faces, and to see Clough up
up close and personal on Thursday from South Dakota State.
You know, it was very impressed with the Marsdale, Barnsdale,
barn Stay, Barnstable and then Noah MINNESOULI. You know, those
(21:00):
those two are really impressive. The other day, and I
mean the list goes on. I just think that you know,
we're gonna play Kansas City the Brown He's just a tremendous,
tremendous competitor. You know, I've been JJ JJ White. I
think deserves a lot of credit. He's made a huge
stride and and how he's playing at the point for
the Omaha.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
It's good.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
It's good to see, you know, for all the portal
and all those I'm you know, you're just happy to
see some of those other kids that have stuck around
do well. Sutton at Omaha is having a terrific year.
Big part of that is that that continuity that Omaha
has a little bit too. So no, I mean, and
it's just it's just all part of this day and
age and and and how the college basketball is is
(21:40):
is moving and flowing a little bit.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
When you look at the league as a whole coach,
We've discussed some of the changes in style of play.
You know, a couple of years ago you'd see throw
it into the post and kind of a traditional defensive
slug pest. And I don't know how many games have
been where teams have hit triple digitous this year. The
skill and the and the type of play that you
have at from a backcourt standpoint, but this, this standings
(22:03):
right now, this much parody. It was only a couple
of years ago, and it's back to back years. We're
eighteen and oh won the regular season. How about that
for a second?
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Yeah, I do, I mean, you never know, right, but
I do think this is more of the norm than
the eighteen and o as we move forward. I just
think there is there's so much new and new and
new in style, new and to the personnel. You know,
I think at our level a little bit where you
can want to play a certain way, but you know,
how however your roster sorts for that that that year
(22:32):
might dictate your terms and how you're playing. Like this
is a very different style that the Bison are playing
right now. And you know, we're not going to compromise
the character of the room. We're going to continue to
recruit tremendous people and human beings first and foremost, and
then we need to build our style, our scheme a
little bit on both ends of the floor to fit
(22:52):
those things. And it's it's been very uncomfortable for me.
It has, and I say that like as a good thing.
It's been challenging, lenging to embrace a couple new things
and learn, and but that keeps it fresh a little bit,
and it doesn't the monotony. You know, it's not stale,
And that's okay. It's been a good pivot, no doubt
(23:13):
about it. I wanted to ask about the preparation process.
It's always fun when we get the audience here. Our
fans are always curious about what a week looks like
for you guys. When you're in league and you're preparing
for two different opponents. So if you could coach kind
of walk us through what the steps look like to
make sure you're ready to play for Kansas City outside
(23:33):
of practice, Yeah, so good, batter and different. I took
our blueprint from our soccer coach. I don't know if
that's a right thing, but I actually took it from
coach Reagan a long time ago, and it's worked extremely well.
And so we color our practices right in not kindergarten.
We don't just color our practices, but we label them.
And so red days are really hard days. And so
(23:54):
three days out from a game, we're gonna go hard.
And what does that look like. We're gonna lift the guys,
you know, Coach Miller's gonna have them. We're gonna watch
plenty of film with them, and then we're gonna practice,
not overly long, maybe an hour and fifteen, an hour
and a half, but we're gonna go hard. We're gonna
go up and down. We're gonna compete two days before,
two days prior, so tomorrow will be a green day
where we won't even tape the guys. They'll they'll lift
(24:16):
a little bit just to move around, and it's more
of a mental day, a lock in day, you know,
and it's a day that we want to be getting
something out of the guys and preparing them at the
same time, we want to make sure their legs are fresh.
And then the day before yellow days, so they'd be
right in between there where we're gonna compete, but more
in a controlled half court right around that hour and
(24:37):
hour fifteen time slot to you know. And we used
to do it where that green Day was right before games,
right where we just you know, right before we just
walk through some things. But our guys like to have
that sweat, that compete, you know, right as they walk
into the battle, so to speak. And I mean it's
been really good for us, knock on wood, it's been
good from us from from an injury standpoint, and I
(24:58):
do like where, you know, again, we're coming off of
a not a let's just be transparent, not a weekend
that we're proud of, not a weekend that we can
It's a weekend that we need to move on from.
It's a weekend that we need. But it's also in
mid major basketball with one opportunity to do the one
thing that we want. You know something that I've learned,
it's clear minds and fresh legs, and so not beating
(25:19):
the crap out of them for three straight days going
into a game has also helped us be pretty pretty
fresh physically and mentally come the most important time of
the year, and that's late February March.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
What does the scouting process look for? Because I know
Spencer Walker, yeah, and all the Coach Jones, everybody is
is putting in a lot of time.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Well, Coach Wilker in particular does it does a ton
of leg work of breaking down the opponent's offense and
and building the database and going through the technology piece
to build up the scouts and and and then to
present to the guys. He does countless hours. And Coach
Dragi does a good job of the opponent's defense. All right,
here's the things that we want to show the guys
(25:59):
and maybe some areas we could take advantage. Here's their
ball screen coverages like this, And Coach Jones is really
like just for me, he's like that go between. He's
really that sound sound for me. Where Jonesy, what do
you think here? We're Jonesy and I are communicating a
lot during the game of how are our matchups looking
and things like that too, and so, but for me
to be honest with you, and I really don't care
(26:21):
how this is taken, right is I don't spend a
whole bunch of a time on our opponents, you know,
prepping it is now. I do watch way more than
anyone in our staff of our guys, you know, I watch,
you know, at least part of every single practice. I
watch obviously all of our games back at least a
couple of times during the season. And you know, today,
just because it happened so fast, I went back and
(26:42):
watched our first half against South Dakota State to try
to just continue to look at some things of what
we're doing or what we can do better offensively as well.
And so I'm just always in that mindset of control
the things that we can control and the way we've
beat our built excuse me are scheme in particular defensively.
It's pretty pretty simple once you've once you've locked into it,
(27:07):
like it's about controlling the principles that we have in place,
and not so much of Hey, they're going to do this,
so then we need to counter that way. So to speak.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
I see appreciate the insights, coach. I'm always cool to
go behind the scenes on the prep process getting ready
for the intensity of a couple of league games. For sure,
we're going to take another time out. Glad that everybody's
here at the holiday in here in Fargo. It's the
Bison Basketball Coaches Show back with more Coach Richmond after this.

Collins in the house. Be good to talk with him.

(30:08):
some tickets if you want them. Come on up and
put your name and info in the prize bowl and
we will draw for those at the end of the show.
We'll get tomorrow Wheeler Thomas in here as well with
us coming up in the next segment, we got coach
Richmond here look ahead here to these upcoming opponents. Coach
looking at the Kansas City game. First off, what type
(30:30):
of intensity do you anticipate in the urgency between the
two ball clubs on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
I think you got a couple of teams that are
real and maybe a little bit so to speak. We're
coming off a couple losses. I know they they've you know,
preseason number one team, and they've dropped some really tight games.
You know, Saint Thomas pet them on a you know,
possession here and Oral Roberts they came all the way back.
And so you know, I have the utmost respect for
coach Mendsay's he's just been a tremendous I mean, he's
(30:57):
just a great person and he's obviously won a lot
of basketball games, and he's done a great job with them,
and you know where they got to last year and
to be preseason number one, and so that they're they're
a big, physical team. They've got a lot of length
and athleticism. They're going to challenge you to They're gonna
challenge your offense a little bit too, and so we
expect nothing, nothing more than we always get from them.
(31:19):
And that's going to be a battle.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
How is it when you go up against the coaches
in the summit League. You mentioned coach Menzies. He's been
around college basketball for a while, been at a couple
of different stops before Kansas City. Is there kind of
when you have that mutual respect, or maybe it's coach
Henderson down at STSU, like, all right, you know what
you're in for, and I know your chest move, you
don't mind, and just let's let's see what happens.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Yeah, it really is, and let's let's hopefully we will
see who prepared. You know, who's prepared their team? You
know better. And like I said, you got a for
all the coaches, you got respect for them. That doesn't
mean for forty minutes that you like them that much
or you know whatever, but I do, I do appreciate
that that competitive respect, so to speak, where you can compete,
(32:03):
you can shake hands before, compete, shake hands after. And
you know, we're fortunate though this I think the Seven
League is, you know, very well coached and very well
recruited too. There's there's terrific young men. There's there's very
good players in the league. And you're seeing that right,
wrong or indifferent, you're seeing it by the success our
league is having nationally. You're you're seeing that by the
kids that are leaving the Summer League from the go
(32:26):
entering the portal and go in other places. And I
think that's because, you know, people around the country just
realize that the type of talent and the type of
basketball and the values that are in the Seth League.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
To James Miller, we've been talking about him now for
a few weeks. He keeps on, uh, just getting better
and better. Had another fourteen points off of the bench
against Saint Thomas yesterday. It just seems like there is
a comfort level that he's got right now on the floor.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Yeah. Well, there's also a comfort level that I have
with him on the floor, and that's just something that
I've been trying to reiterate to the guys a little bit.
Like Javis. You know, Javis has his warts with some things, right,
but he plays with a swag. He plays with the
confidence out there, and it's something that we need to
make sure that everybody else in that huddle, everybody else
(33:12):
in that locker room, is paying attention to the young
man that we're gonna have up here next Tomorrow. It
was it was the same way. Tomorrow's pretty flatlined, like
he's not gonna give you a you know, a whole
bunch of emotion one way or the other. But he's
also a guy like we're gonna play a basketball game.
But but Tomorrow and to Javis are guys like if
we're gonna go on the back alley and it's dark
at night, I'm gonna bring those two with me, right
(33:33):
and and and I think like there's definitely some scheme
and some tactics to the game, but you know, I'm
gonna believe in the ones that believe in themselves. And
and you know, Tomorry and to Javish those guys in particular,
like they firmly believe whether they're right, whether they're wrong,
they firmly believe that they're better than the man in
front of him. And and I think that just permeates,
(33:55):
that permeates that that those good vibes, that confidence into
the rest of the group.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
What was the first thought that came in your mind
when your first few practices with to Javis and you
had seen it on the high school tape, you had
gotten to know him a little bit behind the scenes,
were like, all right, this young man's got some personality,
and he's got a little bit of it that's.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
That's just it. I was pissed at him. Like throughout
the recruiting process, it was it was yes, sir and no, sir,
Like just I mean straight as an arrow, and I
mean the very these two are really close now, but
the very first day he got on the campus, he
was a car like joking and constantly and so it
was just just like we looked around Jones and I like,
who is this? Like we didn't see this at all,
(34:35):
and you know, it's been well documented. I'm just really
proud of that young man from hopping on a roller
coaster and having some tremendous highs and having some really
low lows, but you know, now really just flatlining a
little bit and been on a steady climb. And that's
just a credit to him of of embracing this culture
and maturing and realizing, like, you know, there's some things
(34:56):
I've done in the past and I maybe thought that
was good, and and now I got some of tell
me different. He started to really respect those things, trust
those things a little bit, and it's paying dividends for
him and for us.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Last one before we take a time out, and just
another follow up on Javis his rebounding as a guard.
I think he had eight yesterday against Saint Thomas. He
had the double double against Omaha. Is that something kind
of rare to see from one of your guards. Obviously
he's versatile, but he just scraps on the glass.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Yeah, I think yes and no. When I think, I
think it tells you a couple of things. Good rebounding
teams a lot of times the big guys are boxing
out and the guards are cleaning up. But it also
tells you, like, rebounding isn't necessarily one of those just skills, right,
It's not something that you just can really teach. It's
it's also just intrinsic to go, let's go get the
damn thing right. Let's just you know, you know, let's
(35:44):
just be tougher, Let's just jump a little bit higher,
let's time those things. Let's understand you know, the angles
when it comes off of it and when I mean
it's well documented we were really big to start with
Betty and Jackson. But when we bring one of those
guys off the bench and Javis sides in there, you know,
there's six three forward. So we lose some things, but
what we don't lose is that toughness piece from Javis.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
No doubt about it. Gotta love what we're seeing from

Pride of Elgin, Illinois. Let's give another warm welcome in
to Roldo. Applause tomorrow Wheeler Thomas here with us on
(40:10):
the program tomorrow. Great to have you, my friend. Appreciate
you taking the time. How are you?
Speaker 23 (40:17):
How are you doing great?
Speaker 1 (40:18):
My friend? Sorry I didn't have your mic on there
for a second. How's the headset? It's feeling good? Yea,
A right, good good. It's great to see you man.
It has been now three years here as a Bison
and here you are. You you kind of have this
this junior class. It's almost almost like a core that's
(40:40):
been here through through a lot and seen a lot.
We've talked about to Javis uh there in that last segment.
Noah's in his third year as well. You know, Jab's
here in his second year. How have you and some
of your classmates just kind of found a home here
at Fargo And how has it been for you here
in your three.
Speaker 24 (40:58):
Yeah, I think I think it's been a good thing
for us because we're all close now, like really close,
and like we can joke around with each other twenty
four to seven gets hereous with each other twenty four
to seven, and I just love it.
Speaker 1 (41:09):
I love it. This group's got some personality. I think
these freshmen have a personality. We've talked a lot about
that with Coach. You've been in their shoes before. How's
it been seeing them the Andy's and Carsons and pat
Baths of the world, tracing especially come in here and
kind of put their stamp on things. Yeah.
Speaker 24 (41:30):
First of all, the freshmen are very funny people. Those
dudes that something knows. But they all work hard and
I love having them around.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
I love it. Man, it's been a pretty fun group
here this season. Why don't you tell us a little bit.
We can dive in here to Coach about the origin
story for you tomorrow coming here to be a Bison.
You're from Illinois. Tell us what was it like when
you first came here at NDSU on a visit? What
was that first contact with Coach Richmond the staff.
Speaker 24 (42:01):
I think the contact with Coach Richmond, the rest of
this stuff was good, off Rip. You know, I felt
a genuine vibe from everybody, and I felt like everybody
in the Fargo area was just nice people, even when
like me and my family were going to stores and stuff,
you know, just seeing what was around here. So I
liked it in that sense, off Rip. And I remember
when I was about to fly back home one morning
(42:23):
and it's the visit was like early October and it
was like really cold early October in the morning. I
was like, oh, I was like hold on, but yeah,
I love it.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
Yeah, it's been It's been great, it really has. And
the recruiting process materialized pretty pretty quick. Actually, you know,
Josh Jones is a terrific job. And you know, we've
told tomorrow the story. Things happened for a reason. I
think we were on maybe a different point guard and
for whatever reason, that went in a different way. And
I couldn't be more excited. Just you know, this has
been this has been a it's a challenging fall for
(42:59):
you know, Tomorrow went through a very traumatic you know, surgery.
I mean he's literally got a rod put on his leg, right,
and I mean it takes some time and to see
him go through that and and and establish his roots
and establish the trust that you know, him and I
have now to to understand each other and what he
was going through, and then the expectations and all these things.
(43:19):
Like I think the other thing that always stood out
for me in the recruiting processes was I mean I
do with recruiting all the time, twenty four seven and
then it's a lot of yes, no, right, It's very
short conversations. It was never liked that with Tomorrow, like
we would we would really chop it up and then
then I would hang up and I get a text
I'd be safe on the road or something like that,
and it was like, you know, everybody think this this
(43:41):
head coach title or whatever, and you're above and everybody's
like scared of all those things like tomorrow. It was
never like that, like you know tomorrow. About what I
like about tomorrow is he's gonna keep it real with
me and he knows I'm gonna keep it real with him.
There's there's there's two dudes that are genuine, We're truthful, competitive,
and you know, I just you know, have been extramely
blest to be around this shim man for the last
(44:01):
couple of years.
Speaker 1 (44:02):
I love it. Yeah, it's been awesome to see the
growth here. Tomorrow is great. Last year with you out
of the floor. Unfortunately this year obviously taking the red
shirt to get to one hundred percent. Coach alluded to
the procedure that you had to have before your freshman year,
which is still just a wild story. If those in
the room aren't familiar, if you're listening back home aren't familiar,
(44:24):
can you take us through the summer at July before
we tip things off with the surgery, and then how
it was playing your freshman year and having to manage.
Speaker 24 (44:32):
Things well, it started off, the summer was going well,
and like I knew I'd have a chance of playing
if I just keep doing what I've been doing. And
then I remember I went to the doctors and they
ended up telling like coach Richmond and Jones what was
going on. They called me to the office and let
me know the news, and I just broke down in
(44:53):
the office and then I was calm until I talked
to my family on the phone too. It's kept breaking down,
but this is what air for me, and they, you know,
have my back and help me get through it. And
when I came back to playing freshman, it was like
really stressful at first because I wasn't where I wanted
to be since I was out for so long. But
they kind of been trusting me and told me, I'm
all right, I'll just get back to it with time,
(45:15):
and I ended up having a pretty okay year for
my freshman.
Speaker 2 (45:18):
Yeah, yeah, I think that. So he's got he had
a stress fracture right in the lower leg. And they say,
normally the stress fracture barely shows up on an X ray.
Normally you have to then you have to really go
into an MRI to find out like you have a
stress fracture. Well, to Mar's was to the point where
they call it a black line like and it's when
you have the black line and an X ray from
(45:39):
it's a bad, bad thing. And you know, he just
he you know, he's part of his own problem. Right,
He's just such a gym rat that he's constantly in
there and banging on those things. And so those are
some of the things that we've had to help him with.
And he's learned, is you know, to be more deficient
with his time in the gym where some of his
nutrition habits and all those things to build up. But
and then I just I was just thinking of about
(46:00):
this too, Like he gets cleared, Like we play at Arkansas, right,
and he can't play. We travel to Lawrence, Kansas and
the first time this dumb idiot coach throws them in
is against Kansas. Right ill self from the University of Kansas,
and and so like you know, it probably set him
up anybody else that would have set up to fail,
But this young man is so confident in who he
(46:21):
is and so convicted and secure because of his faith
and those things that you know, there was clearly some
ups and downs that year, but I still remember, you know,
the the quarter or the semi final game against South
dakost State, Like, right, probably the best player on the
floor and and you know, so that that tells you
the srides, It tells you the town, tells you the
(46:42):
character of this young man. And you know, I'm really
excited that he's we've kind of gotten through the forest
a little bit and we've been really consistent now with
the health lately, I'm just really proud of Shot. Looks
a lot better. He's been kicking our butt a little bit,
and practice lately, I don't like that, but I'm really excited,
you know, just to continue to see the trajectory of
(47:04):
the health for him and where that goes for him
and for us.
Speaker 1 (47:07):
Do I know you'd obviously love to be out there
with your teammates at a game setting, but have you
enjoyed kind of embracing that role of like, hey, I'm
the opposition here and I can kind of take you
guys to school a little bit.
Speaker 24 (47:18):
Yeah, it's always fun and practice going against the guys
for sure, and me not playing is definitely like hard.
At the same time, I'm able to like see things
while they're on the course. I'm able to talk to
all the guys at any moment.
Speaker 2 (47:30):
He had a really good voice yesterday and I need
to compliment him on that too, and just in the huddle,
that's something different for Tomorrow. That's probably something uncomfortable that
he hasn't done a lot of and showed some of
his leadership qualities. The other thing is he's not here
to attest He's done a tremendous job with Carson Smith.
You know, Carson is. Carson Smith's gonna be a very
good player in here because Carson Smith works, and I
(47:50):
think it's a big part of his work comes from
seeing Tomorrow work and how those two compete against each
other and really challenge each other in a workout, and
I think it's been good for both of them.

Oh, I'll probably say either a dagger I had last
year against Portland that was deep or freshman year against
SDSU in the tournament when I finished and I probably
jumped from like around close to the free throw line,
jump pretty far, and I finished the layup. Those two

Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
Yeah, this is so much better than the studio. Andy,
I'm happy we're here.
Speaker 23 (01:00:51):
The studio is nice, but yeah, I agree being each studio. Yes,
I agree. I'm with you being here because I also
got to enjoy the eight dollars burger basket today the
coaches show special burger, beer and fries for eight dollars,
which is always a phenomenal deal.
Speaker 4 (01:01:06):
I'd pay eight bucks just for the beer.
Speaker 23 (01:01:09):
I know you're a big time cook, So what's your
favorite thing to cook? Kind of during the winter and
maybe during the summer once you can actually grill and
put a burger.
Speaker 4 (01:01:16):
On the group? Yeah, I like everything.
Speaker 31 (01:01:18):
You know, yesterday was meat loaf and mashed potatoes day
because that's my favorite. My favorite you know leftovers is
a meatloaf sandwich.
Speaker 23 (01:01:29):
Okay, even like more than like turkey Thanksgiving? Yeah, okay,
loft over meatless sandwich.
Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
There.
Speaker 23 (01:01:34):
Yeah, you learn something about the coach each and every week. Well,
you're with you for the next half hour. Any comments
or questions for the head coach. Feel free to text
us at seven zero one four seven six sixteen sixty
if you like to get a part of the program,
and you definitely encourage that. Here this evening as the
bids and women coming off a week in which they
go one and one tough luck loss down in Brookings
against South Dakota State sixty three fifty five, but then
(01:01:54):
bouncing back with another home win, staying undefeated in conference
play at home eighty one seven twenty four victory against
Saint Thomas, and to play four K game. As you
look at those two games, their coach just looking back
at the week, that was what do you what do
you take away.
Speaker 31 (01:02:07):
From the two Yeah, it was a good week for us.
You know, we went out and competed against two really
good teams. Obviously going to SDSU and what they've been
able to do in our league the last couple of
years and where they are as a program. Two veteran
teams that we played. And you know, we got a
chance today to meet as a as a group and
and just kind of look at some numbers and analytics
and not playing Wednesdays giving us a chance to just
(01:02:29):
self evaluate here for a couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:02:31):
And I just told our team, I was really.
Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
Proud of where we're at.
Speaker 31 (01:02:34):
You know, we're playing a very high number of underclassmen
and playing some some talented upperclassmen.
Speaker 4 (01:02:41):
You know, Saint Thomas had I think five seniors on
their team.
Speaker 31 (01:02:44):
Three of them starters that have been there for a
long time, really talented players. Uh, and we're throwing out
a bunch of freshmen and sophomores against them and handling
it really really well.
Speaker 4 (01:02:53):
I'm just excited about.
Speaker 31 (01:02:55):
You know, them being able to continue to grow and
get better in that. And it's you know, it's a
learning experience every time out.
Speaker 23 (01:03:01):
And you who currently fifteen and seven overall, seven and
two in conference playing, you do mention the young team.
I know you probably have to remind yourself. I definitely
have to remind myself every once in a while that
you do have a lot of freshmen and sophomores because
you know, Avery and Abby in around, they don't feel
like sophomores, especially with how many games they have started
in their careers. And even your freshman like Marissa Frost,
doesn't feel like a freshman anymore. But you got to
(01:03:22):
remind yourself that they are underclassman stuff.
Speaker 31 (01:03:24):
Yeah, all those guys, Molly, I mean, they're just you know,
we're relying on on a core. We've got great leadership
and Sholty and Drapes as two seniors, but you know,
everybody else that's played any significant minutes for us the rest.
Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
Of the here.
Speaker 31 (01:03:36):
You know, the other eight are all freshmen and sophomores,
and you know, there's some growing pains with that, there's
some learning going on, but they're also really talented young
ladies and going to be really good players.
Speaker 23 (01:03:47):
Gonna make it pretty excited with the future.
Speaker 31 (01:03:49):
Holes then though, Oh, no question, I can't wait. I'm
still you know, I feel like I've been here six years.
I'm still waiting till we have four or five seniors
in one year. Yeah, that'll be. That will be awesome
to be able to have some people that have been
in our program that long and be able to go
into games, in big games with veterans, and it's exciting.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
By the way.
Speaker 23 (01:04:07):
NBC Women's Basketball, as the coach already said, no game
this Wednesday or Thursday, the first day of league played
this week, a little bit of a mini buy. They
do have a game at home though, this Saturday, one
pm against South Dakota USD coming up to Fargul. The
Bison that chance to sweep the season series against the Oats,
and we're giving away a pair of tickets to that game.
Just sign up. Heer upfront in the bar area. We'll
pull for the winner of those tickets. At the end
(01:04:28):
of the program today, we'll touch on the win against
Saint Thomas here as well. But I've gotten a lot
of people asking me questions about the first game from
last week SDSU, And obviously they've been on top of
this conference for a while and one of the premier
teams in the league. Guys don't win the game at
sixty three fifty five to the final, but I think
a lot of takeaways to take from that one, as
you've played them close to multiple times here these next
these last few seasons. No moral victories bay any stretch.
(01:04:50):
But I've gotten the most comments and questions from fans
about that game.
Speaker 4 (01:04:54):
Yeah, you know, I thought we went in there and
competed really well.
Speaker 31 (01:04:56):
You know, they had four thousand people in the stands
and for a and along women's game and their new arena,
and they're right on top of you. It was a
hostile environment. It was an exciting environment.
Speaker 4 (01:05:06):
I loved that.
Speaker 31 (01:05:07):
I love, you know, I love our crowds and getting
play in front of our home crowds, But the next
best thing is paying in front of another team's crowd
and really playing well and trying to get them to
quiet down and handling that on the road, and we
got off to a great start in the first quarter,
and then they went on an eighteen to oh run
at the end of the first quarter and into the
(01:05:27):
second quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:05:28):
I think we scored five.
Speaker 31 (01:05:29):
Points, and in years past that would have been it
for us, and we might have crumbled a little bit
and you know, lost by twenty twenty five thirty points
or something like that. And I'm hoping those days are
past us. I obviously believe they are. But to see
our team come out in the third quarter and you know,
beat them maybe twenty I think it was twenty one
to eight in the third quarter, come back, take a
two point lead going into the fourth. I loved our
(01:05:52):
teams just resiliency and being able to just bounce back
from a bad second quarter. I really wish I could
have the last two and a half minutes back, you know,
a couple of things, and myself trying to get us
in some things that probably weren't able to do with
the with the crowd that they had, our communication wasn't
very good, and I'd like to have that two minutes back.
Speaker 4 (01:06:12):
But we'll get a chance. Adham here in another week
or so May.
Speaker 23 (01:06:14):
By the way, the return trip February twelfth for everyone
wondering February twelfth, that's a Wednesday, a week from this
upcoming Wednesday, NDSU at home against SDSU. We won four
thousand fans inside of the shack, inside the Shield Center.
Make a difference there for NDSU women's basketball a week
from this upcoming Wednesday, but also this Saturday against USD.
Think our first break on the program would come back
touch on the game against Saint Thomas, the victory there
(01:06:36):
in the play for K game, and also the upcoming
week here for NDSCU women's basketball when we come back
on the Bison Sports Network from lear Field.
Speaker 6 (01:06:44):
Hey, where have you been? Hey man, Sorry, I'm late.
Speaker 9 (01:06:46):
I was at the new First Western Fank and Trust

Speaker 6 (01:06:50):

Speaker 9 (01:06:51):
Yeah, I opened a college checking account. They offered to

and ATMP refunds.
Speaker 6 (01:06:58):
Nice. First Western.
Speaker 9 (01:07:00):

popcorn there too.
Speaker 6 (01:07:04):

many in Bison Nations trust Todd to buy and sell

Speaker 23 (01:08:45):
Croston, let's again on the way fires a three, you
betcha another triple again the ninth of the game for
a the Su, and already the third of the game
for Molly Lenz. She's got nine on the Bison half
the league thirty nine thirty seven the offense for the
Beison pyro fork at the moment, just Redding time shot
(01:09:06):
right there as ANDYSU got the triple back here with
You Live at the Holiday Inn ANDDYSU Women's basketball coaches
show Here with You Live at the Holiday Inn, all
across the Bison Sports Network. You heard that what was that?
Speaker 2 (01:09:18):
Word you use r pyro fork, oh man.
Speaker 23 (01:09:20):
Pyra fork means to ignite. They can actually credit our
good producer, call Ilinimi back in our Bison Sports Studios
with us gives me a word of the game some
and Mikaela Sholkey, a director of operations, has gotten into
that habit a little bit with Emily Deets giving her
a word and sometimes he doesn't get set by Deats
and it gets handed off to me and I gotta
try and fit that one in. So Pyra Ford, it
definitely worked for Molly. Lens knocks home four to threes
(01:09:43):
in that game against Saint Thomas, goes four of four,
it ends up studying a new career high in the
process of nineteen points. Indisue gets to win eighty one
seventy four over the Tommies and they sweep the season
series over Saint Thomas. Was so good to see Molly
have that game. She was the player of the game
as well for us and was taking talking with her
post game. Because I'm in there for some of the practices,
(01:10:03):
I see she is on the shooting machine before and
after practice or maybe when there's a media session and
she's taken a lot of shots and trying to figure
some things out. And those two games really because she
had three against the SDSUS she made as well, but
going four or four there against Saint Thomas, I'm.
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
Just really happy for Yeah, me too.
Speaker 31 (01:10:19):
She definitely puts in the work and you know, you
have to deserve your success, and she deserves to make
shots because she's a really good shooter and she works.
Speaker 4 (01:10:26):
At it, and you know, just to have her go whatever.
Speaker 31 (01:10:29):
That was seven for ten this week from behind the
arc is something I don't think it's any secret with
our team. It's a little bit you know, graduating and
losing l and Heaven last year was those were two
big time shooters that we had, and so we're a
little bit different offensively, just a little bit different strength.
We've played inside a whole lot more this year, but
you still need those floor spacers. You need people out
there that can keep people off of drapes and avery
(01:10:51):
in the post. And she's somebody we envisioned being able
to do that and she did that, you know, beautifully
the last couple of games. And I think for her
it's a mentality of you know, when can I shoot?
She was coming into a new program and uh, you know,
didn't want to ruffle any feathers.
Speaker 4 (01:11:05):
And and you know I'm begging her to you.
Speaker 31 (01:11:08):
Know, you gotta shoot six, seven or eight every game
and just be ready to catch and shoot anytime you
feel like you're opening it's okay.
Speaker 4 (01:11:14):
Uh. And just and she's just starting to get there.
So I'm excited about that for her.
Speaker 23 (01:11:19):
Yeah, almost like she's she's a sophomore overall, but kind
of a freshman in your program, right, And it's like
you're not wanting to just say rough up with feathers.
Speaker 31 (01:11:24):
Yeah, and you know we were a good team last year.
She knows she's coming into a good team. She wants to,
you know, to fit in and help and do all
those things. And every once in a while you need
somebody to you know, I don't want to say selfish,
but you got to be assertive. You gotta believe in
yourself and and you know, we recruited you here for
a reason. Uh, and you got to go out and
do those things that that you're capable of and.
Speaker 23 (01:11:43):
Did them at a high level last week, not going
home seven threes in the two games combined against st.
SU and saying Tom once we talked about it a
little bit as well on the pregame show. But you
were you made a change. You know, Molly's been more
of your point guard and Sulton's maybe be the two
or the three while you you switch it up. You
put shoulder back at the point there where she's been
for you for a number of years, and you let
Molly kind of play off of the ball. Just what
sparked that decision, that change, and what do you think
(01:12:06):
of the two game sample size.
Speaker 31 (01:12:07):
Well, what sparked it was neither one of them were
super efficient offensively there for about three or four games
in a row. And you know sometimes that happens, and
you'll try to let people, hey, let's ride it out.
We can talk about it and watch film, and then
you let another game or two go by, and if
it stays that way and you feel like, you know,
the changes in anything too ridiculous, it felt like a
good choice to make it. Molly's just flying off the ball. Obviously,
(01:12:30):
just wanted her to have a scoring mindset of being
the two and catching shoots and you know, being able
to run the sideline and get some throw ahead pass.
First play of the Saint Thomas game, they didn't get
matched up and she's standing on the wing by herself
and is able to knock it down. And then Schulte's
obviously played been our point guard for the last two years,
so that transition for her mentally and leadership wise was nothing.
(01:12:52):
You know, she just allows us because she plays all
three spots for us, just allows us to put those
young players in positions that are probably a little bit
easier for them mentally and we don't and they can
pic work on being a good player and playing to
their strengths instead of having to overthink and and Shulty
kind of.
Speaker 4 (01:13:09):
Takes up some of that, you know, mental space for them.
Speaker 23 (01:13:11):
You're just saying something about Shulty, and it made me
think of something like in related to football we've talked
about before, but you know, sometimes they bring in a
weird you know package, maybe four tight ends or something,
and the other team doesn't know how to match that formation.
Is it kind of similar as Shulty where the team
doesn't know exactly how to match beause they don't know
what positions she's playing.
Speaker 31 (01:13:26):
Yeah, and you know what we you know, the thing
we like to do is Shulty's poster a lot. Uh
and and even when she's at the three, and sometimes
when people know that she's going to be the one,
they'll put their their smallest, peskiest, you know, pressure to
defend her up in the point guard just to guard
you for ninety feet and do those things. And that's
fine with me because we like to get her down
in and around the basket against smaller players. She's physical
(01:13:48):
and tough in and around the basket. So there's some
you know, there's some things there that we can do
with her that we maybe didn't on the wing when
she's playing against kids.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
Her size or or bigger.
Speaker 23 (01:13:57):
And a couple more quick questions here on Saint Thomas
the victory, they're eighty one seventy four. You also get
a tied career high with the Avery coonning get into
twenty two points for you, what did you see in
that match of both games against Saint Thomas, she was
double digits pretty easily.
Speaker 31 (01:14:09):
Yeah, she had you know, it ended really well. I
think I just saw tweet today from us. Her last
three games in the Shack have been like twenty two,
twenty one, twenty two, which I love to see. You know,
she's starting to get really consistent. I think it's still
a big learning curve for Avery as far as who
she can be as a player and just finding ways
(01:14:29):
to play up to her athleticism and physical abilities.
Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
But man, she was she was really good the other day.
Marissa Frost was really good the other day. Point you know,
you know, I.
Speaker 31 (01:14:40):
Think Molly and Reez had thirty eight points combined on
seventeen shots. So that's you know, one person goes six
for nine, one goes six for eight. I mean, that's
just super efficient out of a couple of guards there.
And then you got a post player that was really
dominant and just did a good job of having inside
outside presence.
Speaker 23 (01:14:59):
Yeah, that's three home games for NDSCU women's basketball. Here
you go with Avery Coonan twenty two points, ten rebounds
against or Roberts, twenty one points, three assists against un D,
and then twenty two points and seven rebounds against the Tommies.
That's pretty good. I heard three double her three games
over twenty points all the last three home games. And hey,
another home game this Saturday, you guys could see another
penny point effort from Avery Coonan. Therefore, Bidings and women's
(01:15:19):
basketball they know the break will comeback. Plenty left to
break down here live at the Holiday and Bison Basketball

heel shot touch that time by Abby Draper with the
left hand gets it the fall in and Draper's up
to thirteen points and the Bison have it tied fifty
five fifty five, three minutes to go. Welcome back here
to the Aviuyes of Basketball Radio show with you live
(01:17:51):
from the holiday and and Erikoff and Jory Collins with
you for the next vote twelve minutes zero. So again,
if you want to be a part of the program,
you definitely can seven zero one four to seven sixteen
sixty call or text that number with a question or
comment here for the coach and you see women's basketball
with some time off here, but they do have a
game on Saturday against USD. That game is at home
(01:18:11):
and you can go see it at one o'clock. It's
also National Girls and Women in Sports Day, so I
know there's going to be a number of girls who
will be there and they'll do a camp and they'll
go through some of that stuff. So that's gonna be
another great aspect to the game on Saturday for you guys.
Speaker 31 (01:18:23):
Ye that's also our alumni day, so we're gonna have
a lot of people back I think we're close to
forty again of awesome players coming back and spending some
time with us.
Speaker 4 (01:18:32):
So happy to celebrate them as well.
Speaker 23 (01:18:34):
Yeah, that alumni can just continue to grow. How big
of an impact and a necessity has that really been
for you when as you've been here to connect with
that alumni base that a lot of them still living
in the state, in the region.
Speaker 31 (01:18:44):
Well, I mean, I've said it a bunch, but that's
a big reason why you know, I took this job,
is that it was demonstrated here at one time that
women's basketball was really important and a lot of fun
and people were invested in it. That's just not how
it is at a lot of places around the country.
And you know, our goal and our job is to
get it back to that level and and make those
young ladies, uh you know now a little older lated they're.
Speaker 3 (01:19:06):
About my age now. Yeah, just make them.
Speaker 31 (01:19:09):
Proud, you know that that you know all the hard
work that they put in and and and how good
they were, uh, that we're getting it back to that.
Speaker 23 (01:19:17):
You have one of those alumni members on on your
bench as well, and the assistant coach, Jamie Adams there
with you, by the way, for fans. It's also a
white out on Saturday, so going to the game where
some white there Alumni Day, National Girls and Women in
Sports Day as well for NDSU women's basketball there against USD.
But you don't have some games early in the week.
You don't have a game early in the week here
like you typically do. So what are these next couple
(01:19:37):
of days and only you have practice today? You got
a couple of other practices this week. What's the goal here,
the objective for these couple of days.
Speaker 31 (01:19:42):
Yeah, Like I said, today was a great day just
to in a little more relaxed setting because we're not
preparing for a team for Wednesday, and and just got
to work on ourselves a little bit. It's a great
time to make some tweaks and adjustments and you know,
just clean some things up and throw a couple of
things we do in the trash can and and add
some new things that we think a little bit better
for us here down the stretch. I mean, we've got
seven regular season games left, so you're just trying to
(01:20:05):
tweak and fine tune some things that you're you know,
things that you're doing well. How can we do those
more often? And and do them better and things were
not doing well. How can we get some of that
stuff corrected. Uh, so today tomorrow we'll be doing.
Speaker 4 (01:20:17):
A lot of that.
Speaker 31 (01:20:18):
We're actually gonna give them Wednesday off, you know, take
a deep breath and recover. It's late in the year,
we've done, played a lot of games and a lot
of travel. Nobody's you know, one hundred percent physically, there's
all kinds of bumps and bruises, and uh, you know,
one twenty four hour period off does wonders for the body.
And then we'll come back Thursday and Friday and get
dialed in on USD.
Speaker 23 (01:20:37):
And I was second time through the conference as well.
You started that with Saint Thomas. You played them for
the second time. What are the biggest adjustments that you
you see in the conference when you're playing a team
for a second time.
Speaker 31 (01:20:46):
Yeah, A lot of that, Andy depends on like how
much time you have or they have to get ready
for you. You know, the first time we played you
and D, they had a full week to get ready
for us. The first time we played USD, they had
a full week to get ready for US. And I think,
you know, we're gonna play and I think they play
Thursday night, so you know, they have really one day
of prep to get ready for us, and you kind
of you watch all their games. How much you know
(01:21:09):
have they deviated from you know, their base stuff and
what they're doing, what wrinkles have they added. Those are
all things you're trying to pick up. Most of the time,
we'll spend the vast majority of our focus on since
we'd had played them pretty recently, just our last game
against them, and then we'll watch all the games they've
played in between to see what they've added or anything.
But it's a lot better when you're preparing for a
(01:21:30):
team to watch yourselves play them the first time, and
especially see your fundamentals and where they stack.
Speaker 4 (01:21:35):
Up and where you can get better.
Speaker 23 (01:21:37):
One thing we know about USD definitely gonna have to
focus on Grace Lark. It's really good player for them.
Speaker 4 (01:21:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 31 (01:21:42):
She shoots it one hundred times a game, and she
makes a lot of them and scores a lot of points.
Speaker 23 (01:21:45):
Yeah, nearly averaging a triple double right now in conference play.
I'll take another break that we'll come back a few
more segments left to go. One more break year for us.

for Frost, lets it go and hits it again. Another three,
back to back fipples for Dysu and they have pulled
this back to a four point game. Adbison with their
seventh mate of the game already seven of fifteen and
they're down now thirty seven, thirty three.
Speaker 1 (01:27:06):
Welcome back.
Speaker 23 (01:27:07):
One last segment to go here on the buying some
basketball radio show live from the holiday and Andy Rickoff
and the head coach Jorory Collins bying some women's basketball
one game this week against USD Saturday at one pm.
But Marissa Frost highlight there for you, knocking down the three.
She's made some threes on I believeing now five straight
games for your coach and freshmans are going kind of
some little Molly taking the initiative and shooting, maybe getting
(01:27:28):
more comfortable behind the arc.
Speaker 31 (01:27:30):
Yeah, she's a good shooter. She got in a little,
you know, a little little earlier in the year where
she wouldn't taken as many as we'd like. And I think, man,
if you Look, she's shooting fifty three fifty four percent from.
Speaker 4 (01:27:39):
The field as a point guard. That's that's really really good.
Speaker 31 (01:27:42):
And then I think she's up to maybe thirty six
thirty seven percent, uh, you know, from the three point
line at least in conference play, and we'll take that
all day. She's good enough to stretch the floor. But
obviously her strength is getting to the rim.
Speaker 23 (01:27:54):
I got her at fifty three percent from the field
in thirty eight from behind the arc seventeen to folves.
Speaker 4 (01:27:58):
Though, I mean as a freshman, those those are good,
really good numbers.
Speaker 23 (01:28:01):
Yeah, those are tremendous. Plus eighty four percent of the
free throw line not too shabby there.
Speaker 31 (01:28:04):
You like that when you're pointing guard, could make Yes, absolutely,
I bet you. She had that one game where she
like missed four she did, yeah, in one game, so
I think it was Kansas City. Completely, yeah, completely, take
that one out.
Speaker 4 (01:28:15):
She's probably over ninety.
Speaker 23 (01:28:17):
Yeah, a great year for the freshman from Final Lakes, Minnesota.
Marissa Frost number twelve. If you haven't seen her, she's
definitely a reason to go to the game on Saturday,
just to see what Marissa Frost can do. I want
to ask you as well. Injuries are obviously a part
of just the game, part of life. But even without
Abby Graham here for a couple of weeks, I know
it's meant more minutes for Amelia Hobson, more minutes for
Claire Sturning in a different role, and maybe moving Shorty
(01:28:37):
around a little bit. What's it been like trying to
manage that and where do we stand with the AG
right now?
Speaker 3 (01:28:42):
Yeah, it's been it just you know, she just had
a calf strain and just kind of.
Speaker 31 (01:28:45):
Jumped up and bitter in between our our U and
O and our Kansas City game and has been out.
She was back today and probably half a practice, maybe.
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
A little more.
Speaker 4 (01:28:55):
She'll do a little bit more tomorrow.
Speaker 31 (01:28:57):
We'll do probably a hard India on Wednesday, and then
I'm hoping Thursday Friday she'll be back full speed and
we can maybe get her in on Saturday, I hope.
Speaker 23 (01:29:05):
Yeah, she'd be a huge benefit to that. I mean
it's junior, right, it's one of your upperclassmen.
Speaker 31 (01:29:09):
Yeah, and AG he's been practicing, you know before that
was practicing really well. She's another player that can shoot
the three at a high level, and that's an area
where you know that we're looking to obviously continue to
get some production from.
Speaker 23 (01:29:20):
Before we say goodbye on the show today, I wanted
to give you a chance as well. I know we
had Randy Hedberg's kind of retirement to a press conference today.
I know you wish you could have been there because
I practiced going at the same time. Do you have
any run ins with with Coach Heedberg?
Speaker 31 (01:29:30):
And Randy's been you know, since I've been here, he's
been awesome to me. I mean, he's he's reached out
to me multiple times after games and you know, just
a vested interest in our program and our team and
my initial time here. Fantastic human being, obviously tremendous football
coach and quarterback coach. The quarterback whisper, I guess is
(01:29:53):
what we're calling. But just a fantastic person. Been blessed
to know him, and hopefully I'll get to hang out
with him a little bit more now than he's uh,
you know, got.
Speaker 23 (01:30:02):
A little bit more time time, a little bit have
a little time.
Speaker 4 (01:30:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (01:30:04):
Absolutely, one of the living legends of the state of
North Dakota, that is for sure. Well, coach, thank you
very much for showing up today, and we'll see you
back out here again next Monday, but also we'll see
you Saturday inside the show.
Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
You bet.
Speaker 31 (01:30:14):
Thanks Henny, thanks for everybody coming today, everybody in run
of applause.
Speaker 23 (01:30:17):
