Speaker 1 (00:00):
Played lactiss On on Honday in Fargo. Welcome to the Bison

(00:07):
Basketball Show with head coach David Richmond on the Pioneer
Seeds Bison Sports Network from lear Field. Now for the
latest on NDSU men's basketball. Here's the voice of the Bison,
Sam Niederman.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Alrighty, ladies and gentlemen, welcome on in to the Holiday
in here in Fargo. It is time for another edition
of the Bison Basketball Show. Appreciate everybody being here with us.
We've got our little crew of regulars over there, Coach,
we got our little perfect attendance club, as we like
to call it.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
They might have their names and the chairs over there by. Now,
this is a great crew. It's fun to see that
out there. You can see the the Bison dcals in
the parking lot and the license plates and all that stuff.
I love it.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, cheers to everybody who's come on out here tonight.
We appreciate it. We're gonna have a one time always
here with you on Monday nights inside of the Holiday
in Fargo. It's the Spirits Lounge. Come on down. We've
got the great deal for you with our Coaches Show
Special eight dollars for a burger, beer and fries. You

(01:15):
cannot beat it, talking some buys and hoops for an
hour and a half every Monday night starting at six.
Coach Richmond is here with us. Always good to see you,
my friend. It's gonna be a fun week now that
we finally get back home for like two games, not
just one and then on the road, but a nice
two game homestand coming up.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah. Absolutely. And I'm just sitting here and how about Clemson,
right what do they get to celebrate for about all
of six minutes? Or they win against Duke and then
they turn around and play Carolina. Welcome to college basketball.
I actually address that today. You know, the little adversity
that North Coast State men's basketball is going through and
dropping some losses, Like the situation isn't unique to college basketball.

(01:57):
Duke loses on the road, Auburn loses at home, and
you know, these are these are things that I just
read an article about the Eagles from last year and
and how that adversity they went through down the stretch
last year shape there you know trajectory this year, and
that's how we have to embrace this. You know, we
are we're playing good basketball. We need to find a
way to play better basketball, to play great basketball in

(02:18):
particularly against those upper echelon teams. And but also then
in a sense too with two big ones at home,
of being better at protecting our home court too, Sam,
and I'm excited. The guy's that tremendous spirit today at practice,
you know, continuing to just define some things and make
sure we're locked in here, as you know, as we
go through this this final little stretch of the regular season,

(02:39):
preparing ultimately for for suit Falls for some of the championship.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Hard to believe that there's only uh five more to
go here in the regular season before we get down
to supe falls in a subtle league championship. Yeah, it's
gonna be fun because we've got this Carolina clumsing game
on right in front of us. That was a heck
of an atmosphere at Clemson the other night when they
knocked off Duke. I did want to ask you since
you brought it up. Dicky V came back after his

(03:05):
two years off from the broadcast booth. He's been battling cancer.
Thankfully he's healthy now and he was able to put
the headset back on which was awesome to see. He's
an institution at college basketball coach. I'm curious of your
thoughts on him over the year.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
I don't know if I can say it any better, really,
I mean, I just think that voice is legendary. His
his passion is what makes college basketball so cool, so special.
And I just think too, we just talked about adversity.
For him to go through the adversity of cancer not
once but twice and to still have the passion to
get back out there, and it's just great that the
generations of college basketball players and fans and coaches that

(03:41):
he's touched just really happy to have him, you know,
back with the headset on and behind the mic. Is
he calling this game too now too? Or I know
he did Saturday.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
I don't know if he's on this one or not.
We're gonna have to keep our eyes peel. But Saturday
was his first return back and a couple of years now, so.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Really cool, you know, for him to be to sustain that,
to sustain that energy, I just think it's something that's
infectious and really cool about college basketball.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
No doubt, he is one of the best. Dicky V.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
We love him, so that'll be fun to see him
get back in the booth Moore later on this year,
co Richman is with us for the next hour. We're
going from six till seven. We have tickets to give away.
It's not only a big week for the men inside
the Shack, but the women have a huge game on
Wednesday night against SDSU that'll start us off, so we

(04:30):
have tickets to that game. We have tickets a Thursday
nights game for the men against Oral Roberts that'll be
nationally televised. I think we're gonna go with Buyson Basketball
after dark with the eight pm tip. Is that like
a good trademark here? I think that should take off
a little bit.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, I heard that, you know, you and I talked
about that this morning, and it's great. You know, last
year with the CBS Sports Network here for our U
and D game, I thought that showed extremely well. It
showed you know, you know, the passionate fan base that
we have, the terrific facilities that we have. Certainly it
was nice that we could get a win. But anytime
you can you can create that national exposure, uh, you know,

(05:06):
for our program, for our university, for our great state.
It's a really cool opportunity. And I think that's so
many of the cool things that you know, we're able
to do now with this Division one move too to
really show not just you know, Fargo, Morehead, the state
of North DaCosta River Valley about what we're about, but
just in the national level, the brand is creating, you know,

(05:27):
it's it's creating a national brand and to have those
exposure opportunities on national television, it's really cool something that
we're excited to be a part of again.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
On Thursday night, yeah, eight pm, tip off Bison against
Orral Robertsons. Saturday afternoon against Denver, we'll be back inside
the Shack for the Bison on this home stand again.
We have tickets to that game as well. If you
want to have a chance to win tickets to those games,
come on over and enter into our prize box up here.
Just put your name at info. We will draw for

(05:54):
them at the end of the program here tonight. So
appreciate everybody coming on out to be with us.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
We're gonna have to.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Kari out here with us, which I know everybody's excited about.
Our guy Steve over here, who's one of our Perfect
and Tennis Club. He was just lit up when I
let him know that Jacari is on the marquee for
the lineup today.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah, and it's fitting Jacari played it. Just a great
weekend of basketball. And you know, the more I'm around
the fan base and all these things, you realize what
a gravitating you know, this personality that and obviously infectious
energy that he brings to the game and spirit. So
it's gonna be great to have Jacari on. I think
he's been on before, it's maybe been a year or two,

(06:33):
but put to have him back on the mic and
and continue to let you know, our fans and the listeners,
you know, know about just a terrific young man that
I'm so proud of. Again, I talked you know at length,
and I'll continue to. I mean, obviously a tremendous talent,
can score the basketball, can guard the basketball, eight assists
the other game against Kansas City. But you know what's

(06:54):
special for me too is just to see that young
man grow into the man that he is today and
how he's mature, and you know, he's just a couple
months away from getting his college degree. To a really
really remarkable, really special things happening for that young man.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I cannot wait to have Jacari on here later tonight.
We'll get to know him a little bit more, have
some fun, and get ready for these two games coming up.
If you've got a question for coach or for Jacari,
you can comment on our Facebook live stream which is
on the NDSU Athletics page. Just drop a comment and
we'll shout out your question later out of the show.
Or you can text us seven zero one four seven

the Holiday Inn and Fargo with Coach Richmond. This is
the Bison Basketball Show on the Bison Sports Network from Deerfield.

(10:18):
We'll have coach Jory Collins as well coming up at
seven o'clock. Appreciate everybody coming on out eight dollars for
a burger, beer and fries here tonight. Coachy, we're gonna
get Jacari on here in a little bit. I'm gonna
talk about what's to come here for this squad with
five games to go in the regular season. We touched
on it on television this morning. Two games on the

(10:38):
road this past weekend, got the split. Just your overall
thoughts after a few hours to reflect and watch everything
on tape.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, still you know, still that growing phase unfortunately a
little bit, but also you know, and having the experiences
that we do and going through this league, we understand
too it's always about growing, always get about getting better.
And you know, I thought, you know, it was a
good performance. You go on the road to get a
victory against a tough, physical Kansas City team that was
really hungry just the way they had been losing some

(11:08):
really close games. We knew and you've heard me talk
at nausea and probably now with the respect that I
have for coach Mendsy's and his program and just the
way they do things, and I thought it was really good.
We made we made some big time plays. We touched
on it to Javis's pass out to Brennan at the
very end of the half, a big momentum, you know.
But and I still say, like we were up ten

(11:28):
and you know, still a little bit of a microcosm
where we are. We're not able to take that ten
to eleven point lead and make it thirteen or fourteen
or fifteen, you know, by not finishing a possession, whether
it's an offensive rebound or something like along those lines.
And then all of a sudden, now now it's back
into a six or seven point game. And you saw
that it came down to some things down the stretch,

(11:49):
and you know, definitely some execution things that we need
to make sure we're cleaning up as we're finishing games.
But all in all, you go on the road to
get a victory like that, you know, against preseason number
one team, you're certainly pleased and excited. And then then
you you make the trip to Omaha, you got a
little vibe to you're feeling those things, and you know
it feels like at home we're starting fast. You know,

(12:11):
it's just it's just the things you're trying to plug
and fix it at home. We're starting fast and then
losing some momentum, you know, then we're on the road.
You know, you go to Saint Thomas game last Sunday,
you go to uh Saturday at Omaha. I mean, you
just they're coming out of the gates, you know, really
on fire. And I refuse to not and have this

(12:31):
wool as me, you know, attitude of you know, oh, well,
they're just hot, they're just making shots. You know, we
have to be able to look ourselves in the mirror
and figure out schematically what we're doing, personnel, what we're doing,
and not just what we're doing, how we're doing those things.
And I think today was about reflecting to those because
certainly Omaha came out hot again, very pleased, not surprised

(12:51):
with the resiliency of our group to battle back not
once but twice and to cut that back down to one.
But the bottom line is you you spend a lot
of energy digging yourself back out of those holes, and
then they go on another run. You're like, ooh, I
got to do this again. And it just took some
It just took a lot to get back into those things,
and then they hit some big time winning plays, winning
shots down to stretch, and of all the things that happened,

(13:13):
as hot as they were and all those things, we
were right there. We're right in the game, but we're
we're not in this for you know, playing horseshoes and
hand grenades, saying we're not in this to be right there.
And we've got to be able to make those defining
little plays, those winning plays, not just in the last
couple of minutes, but throughout the courses as we start
to understand the importance of every possession you look at it,

(13:36):
you know, you know, besides the besides the Saint Thomas game.
You know, I guess South dakost State a little bit
kind of kept that thing, you know, above six or seven.
But we've been in every single game, and we don't
want to just be in those games. We need to
finish those games with a positive left hand mark in
the win column. And to do those things, it's attention
to detail. It's it's how we're executing things just a

(13:58):
little bit more specific, with a little bit more urgency,
with a little bit more toughness, with a little bit
more togetherness with a little bit more whatever to push through.
And that's what we've got to figure out here down
the stretch.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
I appreciate the reflections, coach. I think it was interesting
watching on Thursday night in Kansas City. You talk about
winning plays and help kind of everything adds up. We
were talking about this on television. At the end of
the half, Brendan Watkins hits a buzzer beater to Javis
Miller makes an incredible play driving in his first shot
initially doesn't go, but he catches it in mid air

(14:30):
saves it out of bounds. I wanted to talk about that.
If you're here and you didn't see it, or if
you're listening back at home and you didn't see it,
it's an unbelievable play that Javis makes. What was going
through your mind as you watched it unfold?

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Yeah, I said today as we were doing some TV stuff, Sam, like,
I really didn't see it all unfold. You know, it's
happening at the other end, and it's happening under the basket,
and there's refs and there's you know, players in between,
and you just think the ball gets flung out and
Brennan you know, has zero time on the clock base,
so he's going to chuck that thing up. But when
you go back and you really dissected, you see that

(15:05):
Javis grabs it one hand, is able to take a
peek as he's falling out a bounce, and then you know,
you know, just rips it to Brennan, and then Brennan obviously,
you know, bang bangs the shot. And I think that's
just a microcosm of you know, to Javis's you know,
basketball intelligence and ability to make those big plays. And
you know, it's it's really you know, it's nice to

(15:27):
see Brennan. It's nice for Brendan to see that ball
go through the hole. It's nice for all of us.
Is Brendan's really a high level shooter, but you know,
kind of gone through a little bit of a funk
too here. So at any time score situation that he
can see that, that's going to build confidence in himself
and his teammates around him too. So a big play
and again, like you know, like we just alluded to,
it's a three point it's a three point play. It's

(15:48):
a momentum builder in this into the second half, but
also in a six point game, you know, that possession
ends up being a huge possession for us.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
How cool was it for a guy like Brennan to
go back to his hometown, had friends and family and
the building to support.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Yeah, it just really worked out. It's it's crazy how
the timing of things, you know, for for his family
to be there, It's the first time I'd actually met
his mother, you know, she didn't make it up for
the visit, so that was great. Brennan's girlfriend plays basketball
in the area and they just had an hour practice
so she was able to get over there. Just kind
of the stars aligning, and basketball has just been a
big part of his life. And when you when you

(16:22):
have a game that's been a big part of your life,
you understand the sacrifices and the people that have made
those sacrifices. So, you know, between AAU, coaches and different things,
I think he had, you know, fifteen twenty different people
there and certainly a really cool evening for us, and
and ultimately for him to be the point guard. And
you know, and and Brendan and I talk about it too.
Of all the stats, right, a point guard, you know,

(16:44):
a winning pitcher, a quarterback, right, that ultimate stat that
you're looking for is at w and he was able
to help us get that on Thursday night.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Another fun thing from Thursday was Mason Miller one thousand
career points and he did it waste any time is
the game's opening minute need three knocks down a three
and no surprise that it was a three to get
into the way.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
Yeah, and you know, no surprise for myself or for
Mason that neither of us really knew anything about it.
And it just that's this is that, you know, I
think it's an unbelievable individual accomplishment. Our program is really
not about celebrating those individual accomplished, but we do need
to recognize it. And it's cool. And we were joking.
I think you were on the bus afterwards, you know,
I joke with with Mason. I think I recognized it

(17:24):
and said, yeah, I think nine hundred and ninety nine
of those points came from behind the arc. They got
filed on one and made a free throw. But you know, again,
it just I had about a forty five minute conversation
with with Mason today. You just just a high level
intelligent person in the classroom, in life, you know, certainly
on the basketball floor. And that's what I mean that

(17:45):
this group has never wavered in the joy that they
are to be around and and that makes it that
much more easy for me to just really go after
things with this group and dive into some things, and
you know, and for them to kind of have that
you have a twenty three year old who's engaged, you know,
for them to be able to challenge you and articulate

(18:06):
some things about this, that and the other. You know,
it's certainly certainly happened for Mason.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Have you ever been around a player with that quick
of a release from three? Both Mace and the young
man who's walking in right here, I'd say they're probably one.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
A one surprize surprise. He looks a little he looks
a little shy when he's coming in here.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Let's go on my hand here. Jakari White is in
with us here at the house. He's gonna be making
his debut on the show here in a little bit.
So great to have you here, Jacari. Appreciate you man.
But yeah, he's got quite the quick release there.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Really quick release. And you just watch Mason and every
single thing that he does when he's warming up, no
matter what he's doing. He's doing it with a tremendous
amount of pace. And you know, we always talk about
how you practice is how you play, and you learn
to practice at game speed. You play at game speed obviously,
and and Mason's preparation as he lead. You know, I'm
getting to work out in Friday in between and Mason's

(18:58):
in there just getting some stretching in some things. He
understands the mileage that's on his body a little bit
and to do those extra things. I talked to him Sunday,
and you know, he's in the training room, the rehab
piece of it. We talk about being a pro, being
a professional, and Mason's a pro and professional and how
he tackles everything, no.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
Doubt, pretty awesome to see. So congratulations to Bason on
one thousand career points. We've got Takari here with us,
We've got coach here with us, we got all of
you bides the nation we appreciate and we're gonna take
another time out be back with more with Coach Richmond.

here for the next couple of days gonna test us
again a little bit. But Brian's certainly loyal and we
appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (23:36):
Yeah, building a little character here, nothing wrong with that.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
It's gonna be fun to hunker down here at home,
and that's gotta feel good.

Speaker 4 (23:44):
You know, we're on the road for three months. Staff players,
people have families.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
It's a lot, obviously, it's part of the job at
the territory, but it'll be nice to have a two
game homestand here.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
It certainly will. And you know, we've been on the
road here, like you mentioned, the last couple and the
last three, I think a three in a row with
the Saint Thomas game, and you know, it does really
balance out. I think there's certain times where you're ready
to get on the road and get away from things
and just have your tight little circle. And then after
you've been on the road a little bit, it's nice
to get back home and you know, check in with
the crew and and and help around the house as

(24:17):
much as you can a little bit. And you know,
it's just the balance of college basketball. And we we've
certainly been able to do some pretty darn good things
on the road, all things considered. And when you talk
about college basketball, and I think some of my biggest
appointments right disappointments right now is just how we've played
and you know, in our beautiful facility in front of
our fans, and you know, that's an area that we've
got some opportunities, you know, this weekend, Thursday night and

(24:40):
Saturday afternoon to right some wrongs and you know, to
to you know, not only pack the shack, but to
protect the shack just a little bit better and just
you know, we got some wonderful people here, you know,
this evening with us and just anybody and everybody that
can get out and experience those things. And I think too,
it's like, let's let's all do our part for a
nationally televised game to continue to show show O case
this brand, this community, this university.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Now we'll give it away tickets again. So if you
guys haven't had a chance already, get your name up
in the prize box, will draw for him at the
end of the show. Three different home games in total,
the women playing STSU on Wednesday night than the men
at home Thursday and Saturday, with Thursday's game against Oral
Roberts being eight o'clock tip on National TV. A will
Bison hoops for you after dark is going to be

(25:24):
a blast. Still going back and unpacking last weekend, coach
wanted to ask you about Noah. He was terrific on
Thursday night and absolutely perfect from the floor. Not an
exaggeration right there.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Yeah, I think I think again that there is there's
a box score that reflects that, right and and that's
certainly a big, a big part of it, and in
certainly every single one of those eight field goals and
you know ten rebounds and seventeen points that he had,
you know was crucial in us getting that victory. I
think is as you see a little bit more than others,
but even from a deeper perspective, what Jacari and I

(25:57):
get to see is the things that go into every
single week. And you know, after a tough loss on
on Sunday where you know, Noah myself, everybody needed to
look at themselves in the mirror and be better. Noah
in particular did that with a great hunger and humility
and responded to some some challenges. You know that that
happened on you know what was that on Tuesday morning,

(26:20):
and he took that the heart, he took responsibility for
things and and you know, as a coach like like
like that's the ultimate where you've got the right audience
that knows like there there's better. They want to be coach,
coach towards better, but then also have the ability and
wherewithal to go out and execute better. And and Noah
was absolutely terrific. And you know the again, the seventeen

(26:41):
points eight for eight from the you know, from the
field is a great mark. It's a perfect mark obviously,
but for me, like with Noah's size and just really
challenging him from a mentality standpoint to protect our house
and to help us finish possessions. You know, double digit
rebounding is is is great. You don't see that very often,
and he's he's been able to do that multiple times.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Or for us something about the bank being opened down
to Kansas City. This happened last year in a double
overtime grinder where it was deep into the night. It's
like who's gonna blake first? And then Noah just banks
it a three from the top of the key, and
that was kind of like, all right, we've got it.
Let's slam the door shut. And then again a second half,

(27:20):
big situation, it's a tight gaming conference. He fades away,
it turns around, knocks down about a fourteen footer or
in the late it bakes it right off the square.

Speaker 3 (27:30):
Well, I think it's just one at your night, at
your night, a little bit right, and and and Noah,
we even said something to him like all right, buddy,
that that went in, but that wasn't necessarily a true
Yeah yea, I know, I know, coach, But the bank
was open. You know he's got he's got five dollars,
five bucks whatever you want to say, from from the
Kansas City bank down there, from last year's bank, from
the top of the key, and then you know the

(27:50):
one he had, you know that just just on on
Thursday night too. But again, like I said, I'm just
you know that that's that's just the best part of
this group is frustrated. And as three of the four
games I've been here down the stretch in a couple
of games here too, this group, you know, just responds
to challenges. They respond to hard coaching, They love the truth,
you know, they want direction and you know, and you

(28:13):
could see that today in practice and again you know,
Noah being able to take those challenges on, you know,
literally and figuratively and then be able to go execute.
It was just really happy for no One obviously then
happy for us on Thursday night.

Speaker 4 (28:25):
It was pretty awesome to see.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
Just like watching back the highlights, we talk about spirit
being one of the key values, even on Saturday obviously
where the result doesn't go our way. Big possessions where
we need to stop, whole benches stand in case somebody
makes a big basket, whether it be Noah Kari Jackson, whoever,
everybody's up. That's a huge element that you need at
this time.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
It really is.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
And I think that's what makes it college basketball. The spirit.
You know, refs are refs, right. I don't want to
get fined or waste any but it just it drives
me nuts when they come over. You know, refs drive
me nuts in a lot of right. But I think
the main thing is when they come over and they
tell your bench to sit down, and you've got a
bench that's up celebrating. I mean, this is this is

(29:07):
college basketball. These are kids. Let them throw up the
three goggles and do you know, do all the things
that that make this fun and for for fans to
get behind. And there's there's student athletes and and you know,
and so that is a big part of it. When
I go back and I watch video every night and
and all those things, I'm watching everything. I want to
know how passionate are we, how together? How tough are we?

(29:31):
You know, one to fifteen, fifteen to one, and you know,
and it's really encouraging to see the Eli Bradley's, you know,
the Carson Smith but even even lately, which has been
really good to see the Mary Wheeler. Thomas has been
active and vocal, you know, as he's red shirting this year,
he's been active and vocal in the in the in
the timeouts and things like that. And that's really, you know,

(29:52):
a benefit for me too. When when that message comes
internally from player to player, I think in a lot
of ways it can go farther than when it's coach
led all the time.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
That's really cool to hear you. It was fun having
tomari on last week talk about how he's grown here
at the program. And yeah, I like the three goggles.
I like to Javis raising the roof after Dugs or
whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (30:11):
Who knows what the jays is doing. You know, we're uh, yeah,
we're all trying to figure out what that kid's doing.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
Yeah, it was it was a fun weekend for sure,
seeing them get behind the team at every different stage
of the game. We're going to take another time out

on into the holiday in here in Fargo. It is
the Byson Basketball Coaches Show every Monday night at six o'clock.

(32:54):
Appreciate all Bison Nation coming on out to join us again.

Speaker 4 (32:58):
We've got the.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Coaches Show special eight burger beer and fries. You cannot
beat it. It is the best deal in town. We
love it, We love having you guys here. It's been
a blast so far, and can't wait for the next
six weeks or so as we start steamrolling towards Sue
Falls and get ready for the Sun League tournament. We'll
get Jakari on here. At a second, we're live with

(33:19):
Coach Richmond. We've got a couple of fan questions coming
in on the text line.

Speaker 4 (33:24):
Coach. This one comes from Ron and Fargo says.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
With the subventh League tournament now concluding on a Sunday
instead of Tuesday like in the past, I imagine this
should be advantageous for Bison fans traveling to Sue Falls
to cheer on NDSU in person. How does that change
up anything as far as the routine. Obviously, you guys
have been accustomed to, you know, a certain cadence as

(33:47):
far as the weekdays. But at the end of the day,
I'm sure three days, three games that you gotta win
to get to the ultimate prize.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
I think the biggest point is, you know, to Ron's
point is, hopefully this is really advantageous for Bison fans
buys the nation to you know, have maybe just a
little bit better opportunity eliminate a little bit of excuses
to get down there and see it where you know,
those semi finals and the finals are going to be
played on the weekend rather than on a weeknight, and
you know, it's certainly a terrific environment. It's certainly a

(34:15):
terrific event, and I just really want to encourage everybody
to get out. And you know, if you're a fan
of college basketball, mid major basketball, if you're a Buison
basketball fan, some of the league fan, you know, it's
really everything that's about I don't you know, obviously we're
locked in and focused to ours, but I find it
hard pressed to find a better environment, especially in the
mid major men's and women's environment. And you know that

(34:35):
the Jory's got his lady's playing at a high level
right now, and you know, I, you know, fully expect
you know, them and us to you know, be involved
in the weekend and to do those things and sue
falls of sports authority. Everybody does a great job with
that event. So you know, hopefully to Ron's point, it's
advantageous for people to get out and a little bit easier,
a little bit more convenient. So it's not necessarily right

(34:56):
around the work week.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
How cool would it be if on that final night
we've got both programs competing for a title. That would
be pretty special.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
I'd put my name in that bucket over there. You know,
if we can get that done, and you know, again,
then Joy will tell you that he's got all the
confidence and his ladies. I know this. We've talked about
it in our group. I've got all the confidence and
in us and you know as we as we all
continue to and every coach is going to tell you
those same things this time of year, in particular, when
you know everything gets wipe clean and and but that's

(35:24):
what it's all about. That's that that that's the really
the special part. And and and you know obviously why
they call it March Madness.

Speaker 4 (35:30):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (35:31):
I didn't want to get in a couple on the
upcoming games here for US coach before we take a
break and get you Curry in Thursday against O. Are
you this is a team that lost a tough one
against USD the other night, that this was the one
ten to ninety six game back in January.

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Thanks, I did me to.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
I just had to get the little factual report to
get there. But a lot's happened since then. Uh, they've
got some guys back healthy. What do you see it
in the Golden Eagles will be coming into town.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Yeah, I still I still just see an outfit of
program that's just you know, not you know, just a
couple of years removed from making a you know, tremendous
run and really back to back years, and you know
that that's a program that's a culture that understands winning.
You know, they're playing at a high, high clip offensively.
You know, we were able to get that victory the
last time we were at their place on that Thursday night,

(36:24):
although I don't know how much it felt like that
for me, you know, just giving up ninety six points.
I think we've made some strides and done some things
to understand that we've got to get better in that area.
You know, Isaac McBride is a very talented, you know,
young man, one of the more talented young man. I
think he was maybe preseason Player of the year. Again,
if not, he was right up there. And you know
they did and I don't want to mispronounce his last name,

(36:48):
but the number sixty four, Sam l Geky is clearly
you could see the hole that was left when he
was out with the ankle injury and just a big, strong,
physical young man that allows them some versatility to play
some different lineups. And you know, any team that can
put up ninety you know ninety six is it is
a talented group. And so we we know it's going
to be a challenge. And you know, Denver is is

(37:10):
you know, maybe struggling record wise a little bit about
like oral, but like when when you watch Denver play,
Jeff has done such a good job. Those kids compete,
they they've got some great you know, athleticism. They really
pressured us, probably more so than than most teams maybe
like a Saint Thomas a little bit. And when we
didn't play them before, DeAndre Craig didn't play and you

(37:30):
know he's been healthy too, so you know that that
makes it when you take an all conference type player
preseason like like DeAndre, that makes them a different team too.
So you know, all things that are on our radar,
no question, you know. More so today it was you know,
a Bison day of continuing to to to make sure
that we're fine tuning some things and and understanding those
little things here or there that it's going to continue

(37:51):
to hopefully, you know, separate us in a positive manner
from being the good team which we are right now,
to being the great team that we have aspirations of being.
And I don't hesitate in saying that, Sam and I
say that from a track record of being around this.
We need to make sure that we have a mindset
to grow and to get better, so we are ultimately
playing our best basketball in Sioux Falls in March.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
Coming up here should be a fantastic opportunity. Thursday night
buys it against Oral Roberts nationally televised eight o'clock tip

first half, brings it back outside seven on the timer.

moves to his right, fires up a long three. Got
its time out, Dave Richmond.

Speaker 26 (44:29):
Jack Cary White is locked in here in this first
half twenty four points, forty four twenty three Byson. They're
up by twenty one at Butler went nineteen seconds to.

Speaker 4 (44:42):
Go before the break.

Speaker 2 (44:45):
Alrighty, ladies and gentlemen, welcome back on in it is
the Bison Basketball Coaches Show. That's how it sounded on
December the tenth, I believe is the exact date with
NDSU knocked off Butler at field House and this young.

Speaker 4 (45:01):
Man here me back end of the day, Sam had
you with the time out right there good exactly.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
That's about all I was good for there in that kid.

Speaker 2 (45:11):
That was pretty pretty crazy, pretty special to be a
part of. Jakari White is here with us. Let's give
him another big round of a pause, coming on for
the first time this season on the Bison Basketball Coaches Show.

Speaker 4 (45:22):
Jacari, great to have you.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
That was something we got to talk after the game
and it was kind of a blur and surreal and
everybody celebrating as we ended up getting the win. But
a couple of months later, I'm sure it's been neat
have you have you had a chance to reflect on
the first half against Butler and how special was that
for you and your teammates a little bit?

Speaker 7 (45:43):
You know, it was No, that was a fun game.

Speaker 21 (45:46):
That's probably the funnest game I've been a part of,
you know, my time here and it's just something like
I didn't really watch Hoosiers, so like everybody with someone
like the history and stuff and about the movie, I
was just like, I don't know, so, but yeah, it
was just, you know, it was just fun to be
a part of and I just really enjoyed it to

(46:08):
be able to do that with my team and everything.

Speaker 4 (46:11):
So I love it. I think they need to replace
Jimmy Chitwood with Jakari after that one.

Speaker 3 (46:16):
He would have been a fitting He would have been
fitting right there. He would have filled in, right, we
should have around the piket fence for them.

Speaker 4 (46:21):
Hey, that's right, that's right. Have you have you seen
the movie now?

Speaker 3 (46:24):
No?

Speaker 7 (46:25):
I still haven't.

Speaker 4 (46:28):
You got You've got to, man, it's it's a classic.
That was really cool.

Speaker 2 (46:33):
I was just thrilled watching you do your thing, Jacari
during that that half, because that's gonna be something you'll
have for the rest of your life, my friend. But
and then you did a similar thing at USD back
a few weeks ago, and you started seven for your
first seven and ended up going for a career high

(46:53):
thirty two points. Is there is there something about when
you get into groove that you're just in this state
of I've got the target lock on it automatic.

Speaker 21 (47:02):
I wish I could tell you. I wish there was
a recipe that's just laid out just with I could
do this.

Speaker 7 (47:07):
And it just happened.

Speaker 21 (47:09):
It's just I don't know, but yeah, that's how I got. Like,
I don't really there's no really real recipe to It
just kind of happened. So you know, when you put
in work throughout the week and you show up the
games and you just have that confidence and it just
carries throughout the whole game.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
So coach, what's going through your mind? When when do
you see Jakari going on those hot streaks.

Speaker 3 (47:32):
Run back and get the next stop, get the next rebound,
you know, and that's it's probably too Jakari will tell
you that I'm crazy and all these things, and you really,
you know, even in the moment, you don't realize, and
that model just went on and on. But I don't
know if I've ever seen a performance like that in
twenty minutes and you know, all those things, and I think,
you know, the USD game was great. He was locked
in and firing too. But I just go back to

(47:53):
the Kansas City game where you know she's playing in fifteen,
five and eight. For a guard like to do those things,
it's just terrific. And I think that shows too his
maturation just as a you know, we talked about his
maturation as a person, as a student and all those things,
but his maturation, for you know, I've really challenged him.
And he'll be the first to tell you that. You know,

(48:14):
you're really talented, Scorge car you can really guard the basketball.
How are you impacting the game in different ways? And
because of the talent that he is offensively, he draws
so much attention and for him to start to slowly
start to figure those things out and realize, Okay, I'm
getting you know, I'm getting shaded here into all this
that and the other. Okay, I need to find my
teammates and then trust his teammates too. That's another big

(48:34):
piece of it. And I'd say you get eight eight assists.
Eight assists is a big mark in forty minutes of
college basketball.

Speaker 2 (48:40):
What was working there in the assist department on Thursday, Jacari,
career high for you against Kansas City. Offense was flowing,
everybody was getting involved. How was it to facilitate a
little bit and set up your teammates for some opportunities.

Speaker 3 (48:54):
That was so good.

Speaker 21 (48:56):
Like I like pointing everybody out, like whenever they score
a bucket off of pan as, I gave him more
and coach, I was telling me to playoff two feet
and you know that work for that game.

Speaker 7 (49:06):
So you know, I'll probably be doing that more.

Speaker 4 (49:12):
The principles and the process coming coming to fruition. I
love it. You've had three years.

Speaker 3 (49:18):
It took your car into a college coach a little bit.

Speaker 4 (49:22):
It's good senior year, coach, senior year. That's great.

Speaker 2 (49:27):
I was gonna say, you've had some big dunks here
this season too, and throughout your career. You like getting
up there a little a little showtime when you get
a show off the bunnies and the other.

Speaker 21 (49:36):
Something I wanted to add in, Uh, you know something
I've been working on the summer a little bit. I mean,
I hope to get a little bit more actually, but
I probably need to peel a few more panels before
I think about.

Speaker 3 (49:49):
I didn't ask you, did you You didn't get followed
that bad? Did you in the second half?

Speaker 7 (49:54):
Or did you know I got found terrible?

Speaker 27 (49:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (49:56):
Sure, so the game because if you don't know he
missed the dunk when he got fouled. It would have
been a nice hand one if he would have played
off too.

Speaker 4 (50:09):
What are you gonna do?

Speaker 27 (50:10):
Right?

Speaker 4 (50:10):
What are you gonna do? Jakari?

Speaker 2 (50:13):
I think it's pretty awesome to see you here in
year three. You're from Orlando, which which is about as
far away from Fargo as it can get for for
those who are here in the audience and everybody listening
back home. How did you first come to nd s U?
You played a year of junior college down in your
home state of Florida, and then next thing you know,

(50:35):
you're a BIASA.

Speaker 4 (50:36):
Can you walk us through it?

Speaker 3 (50:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 21 (50:39):
So with my recruiting process, it was different from a
lot of people's because it was after Like it was
like really late, like I think the cutoff is like
in the July or something or yeah, something like that,
and I came up in June.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 21 (50:58):
And SASS was really when that recruited me and we
all hopped on the phone. I had visits planned up,
like I had a bunch of other schools hit me up.
So I had visits lined up like back to back
to back, like I was like that whole week I
was visiting.

Speaker 8 (51:15):
Uh.

Speaker 21 (51:15):
I took three visits so and the NDS. It was
my last one, and I knew I went to like
uh like look at all my options thoroughly with like
my family and everything, and you know, with people back
home who's helped me get to this point. So and
when I got here, I took my visit. You know,

(51:37):
I really liked the people, I liked the environment. You know,
it was different for me. I knew I wanted to
get away, and so I just wanted to get away
for like, so I can grow as a person and
not be around you know, my family as much and
learn about myself.

Speaker 7 (51:52):
And so you know, I took that chance.

Speaker 21 (51:54):
And you know, I feel like you really paid off.

Speaker 4 (51:56):
So I'm really grateful for no doubt about it, no
doubt about it. I love it.

(58:23):
fun ones. Jacari your face. I've been asking this to
all of our guys who will come.

Speaker 4 (58:29):
On this year.

Speaker 2 (58:30):
Favorite play that you've made in your career so far.
It could be a shot you've made, could be a steal,
could be one of those dunks maybe not necessarily off
two feet that we were talking about earlier. Whenever you've
got favorite play so far in your.

Speaker 21 (58:45):
Career, man, I think I would say that the dunk
against Morehead because I think that was like the first
one that I've actually like gotten in the game for real.

Speaker 7 (58:57):
So I say that's one the one that's up there.

Speaker 4 (59:02):
Yeah, that was That was a sweet one.

Speaker 20 (59:04):
Man.

Speaker 2 (59:05):
That one needs to go on a poster for sure. Uh, Coach,
your your favorite moment that you've seen of Jakari so far?

Speaker 3 (59:11):
That wouldn't be on the court, you know, it's just
just the maturation I've seen this young man make and
as a person as a human being, you know, just
maybe My favorite moment would be to see his face
after his grades, you know, this past semester and things
like that to Jaquari, like you know him and I
we don't hold back about it. Just some of the
adversity he's been through in his life into battle and
to make some choices to come from Orlando to Fargo

(59:33):
and this young man I couldn't but not be more
proud of He's He's allowed some roots to grow deep
and because of that, he's blossoming above the surface. And
that's not to take away anything. He's a terrific basketball player,
but a way better human being.

Speaker 2 (59:45):
Jakari your favorite player growing up to watch, favorite hooper
growing up to watch.

Speaker 7 (59:52):
I'd be crazy not to say Curry, right, Steph Curry?

Speaker 3 (59:54):
Yeah, yeah, crazy that run.

Speaker 21 (59:58):
That when they three PtD that was Yeah, that was probably,
like I mean, it changed the game for me. So
it's someone I really looked up to at that at
that moment.

Speaker 4 (01:00:07):
So yeah, I think it might be a Curry on
some of the other scouting reports. My man, that's good.
That's good.

Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
They gotta gotta get the shooters touched in there. Uh finally,
last one. If we're doing half court shots, at the
end of practice, give me two other guys you want
on your team. Uh, it doesn't have to be rookies
versus bets like we normally do. But give me two
other guys that you want on your team. Man, gotta
be careful here too.

Speaker 7 (01:00:33):
Yeah, it depends on the day. Like some guys hit
some days. Somebody who's consistent, I say, surprisingly Pat.

Speaker 4 (01:00:43):
Yeah Pat made one on on Saturday.

Speaker 7 (01:00:46):
I think, Yeah, we're on a good day tracing.

Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
At the bottom.

Speaker 7 (01:00:54):
No, I had no, I take it back. I'd rather
have Mace to Maces.

Speaker 4 (01:00:57):
Yeah, good, picks good.

Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
And finally, anybody who want to shout out here listening
back home or friends, family, teammates, whoever.

Speaker 21 (01:01:06):
Yeah, definitely my family first. You know, my dad has
helped me through a lot, especially up to this point.
You know my juco teammates who also get another year,
you know, shout out to them, Shout my teammates now.
Shout out to my past coaches as well. They allowed
me to you know, grow and prosper with them. So

(01:01:29):
that's that's really all I got.

Speaker 4 (01:01:31):
I love it, man, I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
Let's give it on out for Jacari coming on out
here to the holiday inn. We appreciate it. Coach Jakari,

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
