Speaker 1 (00:00):
Fargo. Welcome to the Bison Basketball Show with head coach
David Richmond on the Pioneer Seeds Bison Sports Network from
lear Field. Now for the latest on NDSU men's basketball.
Here's the voice of the Bison, Sam Niederman.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Alrighty, ladies and gentlemen, welcome on in to the Holiday
Inn here in Fargo. It is a beautiful Monday night
and it is time for the Bison Basketball Coaches Show.
So happy to have you all in here. Whether you're
back again or maybe your first timer. It's great to
see some new faces in here. Thanks for letting us

(00:42):
be a part of your Monday night. We're gonna have
a fun time for the next hour and a half
or so. We'll talk with our head coaches here for
NDSU Bison basketball Chattabell last week's games, Get ready for
this week. We're getting into the home stretch of the season.
Only two more weeks to go in the regular season
before we go down to the Summit League Tournament into Falls.

(01:02):
We've got coach Richmond here with us. Coach, great to
see you, Happy Monday. We were bringing the energy earlier
on TV. We like to call this a little tone
centers Monday, and now we rounded off here on the radio.
Appreciate your time.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah, I wonder if Andy and Jory would mind if
we went five extra minutes in our show today. It
seems like we've been really good at that. But yeah,
and certainly a great crowd here at the Holiday Inn.
And I even got my oldest Mallory's here. I was
thinking about what we should try to throw her on
the on the air today, but she wasn't having that
at all.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
No worries that that could come maybe down the road.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
I think I would be in big trouble when we
went back back home if we threw her on.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Oh that's too good. Well, shout out to bal We
appreciate you making it. This is gonna be a really
fun time. We've got two unbelievable games to dig into.
They were they took all forty five minutes. As you
reference back and forth, we played a lot of overtime
games last year. I'm sure there was some reminiscing that,
some flashbacks during the action.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, I forgot all about that, But now that you
say that, I do feel like, you know, just even
from our Western Michigan game, the first game, it felt
like that but you know, we have a bunch of
sayings within our program and one of them is it
takes what it takes. And you know, that's been that
mentality has been instilled in our guys in the summer
with Coach Miller and the strength and conditioning and not
just to run to the line, run through the line,

(02:24):
and it takes what it takes. And you know, there
was some stretches of brilliance, there were some stretches of
we still got some work to do, which is okay,
but really proud of our guys. You know, we found
ways to win basketball games in mid February. I thought
we in particular in that or Roberts game, I thought
we showed a tremendous amount of poise being down for
late and being able to get a score, a stop

(02:46):
and a score, you know, to finish that. You know,
those are big crucial times in big crucial time of
the year basketball and certainly very pleased, very proud of our.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Group, no doubt about it. It was a fun one
on National TV on Thursday, gets O or you Saturday
against Denver. When you look at it, ninety minutes of
basketball is a long that's a long stretch in the
in the span of three days. We talk about endurance
from a mental standpoint, but physically, the guys had to
make sure that they were up to the task.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, absolutely, and I think that that was big and
just trying to make sure, you know, and we've even
tightened up the rotation a little bit. And but what
I mean, you can control so many things, but you
can't control the officiating. You can't control the opponent. And
you know, one of the things that we also talk
about is you can't let fatigue beat you. And that's
a mindset, it really is. And you got a little
bit of from being fatigued. That's a lot better than

(03:37):
the pain of regret after that game and not having
at least one more point than the opponent. And our
guys found a way. And not only do they find
a way, you know, through that fatigue, they were able
to execute in some really crucial, tense moments and get
paid at the free throw line and Jackson at the
rim and to Javison in the Denver game. So, like
I said, it's a sum of all of our parts.

(03:59):
And we're still working, we're still moving some things around,
and you know, Andy Stefano Witz on Saturday afternoon gave
us some big minutes and some big shots. So I
thought Lup Kasuki played pretty well on Saturday, and that's
what you need. You need different guys to step up
in different times. Obviously, Jacari and Jackson are getting a
load of the attention from the scoring standpoint, and they've

(04:20):
been terrific, and Mason's really shooting the basketball very well.
But it's also nice to have some other guys step
up and in particular and some crucial times.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, it was awesome to see multiple buys and get
in on the action when it really counted, whether it
be an overtime, closing stages of regulation. We'll get into
all of that tonight here with coach. If you have
a question for Coach Richmond, or you want to just
send us a comment and shout out, you're more than
welcome to seven zero one four seven six, sixteen to sixty.
That's the number if you want to call or text us,

(04:50):
and you could drop a comment on our Facebook page
on NDSU Athletics, our live stream is up and running
for you right now, so we can get it going
and and get a comment in there. We also have
tickets to give away tonight. We've got a couple of
tickets to each home finale here for both our men
and women will have the home finale Senior Day, which

(05:14):
is hard to believe that.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
We're already That's what I was just going through. I mean,
this is crazy to me that, you know, we've got
three regular season games left and you know, only one
of them on the road. And you know, Jory, I'm
assuming would tell you the same, and he's got a
good you know, a group of a couple, two, three seniors,
and so, you know, a special time of year, fun
time of year. We even addressed it today this afternoon
in our second practice of just I know, it doesn't

(05:36):
quite seem like the rest of this week with how
darn cold it is, but towards the end of this
week and then starting next week, you're starting to see
the temperatures change and it's starting to feel a little
bit like really about that fun, fun part of college
basketball season late February early March here.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, you could feel it of the air for sure.
We got tickets to that Senior Day game USD. It's
a Wednesday night, so a week from this Wednesday inside
the Shack for the men and then the following night
on Thursday, the women have Kansas City. So we have
two pairs to both of those games, two sets of
tickets for you to win. If you want to have
an opportunity to win the tickets, just come on up

(06:10):
here and put your info in the prize bowl and
we'll draw for him here at the end of the night.
Once Andy and Jory get going here. In our second hour, we're.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Also going to have coach career, Big Cam, Yeah, the mayor,
the guy that makes it all go on during the season.
So yeah, great, Like again, I talk about our guys
and on the court and you know the collective one
to fifteen, fifteen to one and the sum of all
of our parts. But it's also that that moving family
that we got a particular on the road with yourself

(06:39):
and you know Wes Offerman and you know Henry Schmidt
and all those But the guy that really kind of
orchestrates it all behind the scenes and does not get
enough credit. But just as a true ally to me
into this program is Cameron Gearen. Will you and you
know what I mean? You know Cameron obviously, but you
know Biz the nation will get an opportunity to hear
from Cam and who does and just an exceptional job

(07:00):
at what he does. So just a very very bright,
intelligent young man, the man led by his faith and
very proud that the camera has been a part of
our program and impacted our program. And he's going to
have a bright future no matter what he decides to do.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, it's gonna be awesome to have him here and
get to know him a little bit more. The mayor
is very appropriate, Yeah, very.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Just like very very smooth and in all of his
the way he handles relationships and the pr stuff that
he's doing, and you know, it's it's a job of
a goal between in between the coaches, you know, and
and our players, and the players are giving him crap
and he will give it back. He's just got a
good vibe about him, in a good understanding of life
and just you know, I'll say this, Camra Grew has

(07:43):
had a tremendous impact on me and who I am.
And I just enjoy sitting with him and talking life,
talking faith, and you know, he's just just a really
good man.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Cannot wait to have him on. It'll be fun. We'll
have him at about six forty or so. The last
twenty minutes of the show. We're live at the holiday
and we appreciate everybody being here. Just underway, Buyson Basketball
coaches show me back in moment. This is the Bison
Sports Network from Rearfield.

we'd like to call it. Yeah, and love the core
that we're building out here, Love the energy, the enthusiasm.
We're going to keep it going here these last few
weekends before we get down to Sue Falls again. If
you've got a question for coach seven zero one four
seven six sixty to sixty or on the ndsgu Athletics

(11:21):
Facebook page. This one comes from Ron, our good friend
who has been giving us some great questions all throughout
the season. Ron asked Coach, how might finding ways to
win in close games during this conference season pay dividends
come Summit League tournament time when the games are going
to come down to the wire.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Yeah, I just think it's simply the experience of being
in those games and then also obviously being able to
execute in those games. And like I mentioned here, you
can hopefully at some point here real soon start to
feel the weather change and three regular season games left,
you you just know this time of year there's going
to be some really close, close contests. In this past
weekend was as the evidence of that. And to be

(12:02):
in these moments and have these experiences, and then for
us obviously to have positive moments and experiences from these
last two games is going to be hopefully very beneficial
for us down the stretch. And you know, we would
love to win every game by twenty plus, right, but
usually that's obviously not the case, and for us, it's
about finding a way. You know, we talk about NASCAR
being the fastest car in the race that day. That's

(12:24):
what's important. And it's certainly a great question. Ron As
you're watching college basketball about anywhere and everywhere, most of
them are coming down to a possession here, possession there,
and having the experience, having the poise, having the understanding
to execute down the stretch is obviously tremendously important.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Have you seen the We've talked about it coach, the
maturity of this group, whether it be a the amount
of games that our guys have played, or be just
the mental makeup right, the way that they carry themselves
on and off of the court. How has that shown
through when you're at the free throw line and you
got to make some clutch ones to pull it away,
or you've got to make the shot to tie the game.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Yeah, I mean I thought that was big. Where you know,
certainly everybody and their dog knows that Jackson Mony is
our guy and we're going to play through him. And
that was clearly evident in the OREU game on Thursday night.
But what I liked is on Saturday afternoon, it was
maybe a couple of different guys. Luke Kasuki, you know
he went to the line and made a couple of
big free throws. Jakari, you know, hit a monster three,

(13:21):
you know, to put us up one, I believe. And
then when when Jackson filed out to Javis, Miller has
just been outstanding and I find ourselves talking rightfully so
talking about him more and more. But he's making winning
plays and impactful plays on both ends of the floor.
And when he went out, we were able to get
him the ball just kind of down in that lower
block area and let him go to work. And those
are four obviously monster points that helped separate some things

(13:43):
and create some separation for us to get some stops
as well. And again I think that's important too. If
you're just this, if you don't have any diversity and
who you're playing through and how you're playing, it's really
easy for the opponent to tee off a little bit.
But I think that's what Jackson would tell you and
Javis would tell you you and you know, we're some
of all of our parts.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
You mentioned the free throw line, Coach, I did some
digging here. Today. We're at seventy nine percent in league
games at the line, which is number one in the
entire conference.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
That's not gonna be the announcers jinks, now, is it?

Speaker 2 (14:15):
I hope not. I'll knock on would and do whatever.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
No, I think that's it's it's huge. And you go
back to Ron's question about you know, winning games and
closing out games. It's so big to get to the line,
number one, But then when you get there, to get
paid and and and that's that's been really evident lately,
is is our guys not only getting there but getting paid.
And you look at some of our stretches when we've
been successful, we're shooting twenty plus free throws. Some of

(14:38):
those other games where we haven't been as successful, we've
settled a little bit too much and we haven't really
dug our heels in and said, hey, I need to
get a little bit farther into the pain. I need
to get all the way to the rim and do
those things. And you know when we can When we
can do those things so we can get to the
free throw line and then get paid at the free
throw line, it's it's a sign of a reallyverse, very good,
talented basketball.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Group, no doubt about it. We're going to keep on
going here with coach We'll take another break to stay
on track. Great to have everybody here at the Holiday Inn.

they had to get into it. What's uh what it
came available. So great to see everybody, And if you
got a chance to win tickets, you just have to
come up here to the bowl, put your name and
info in the prize bowl and we'll draw for a
pair of tickets to the regular season finale for the
men on Wednesday, February twenty sixth then the women on Thursday,

(19:18):
February The twenty seventh against Kansas City as well. If
you got a question for coach Richmond seven oh one
four seven six sixteen sixty. You can also comment on
our Facebook page as well for the NDSU Athletics live
stream that we have here going so, coach a couple
more on as we look back on last weekend before

(19:39):
turning the page to rivalry games we have coming up here.
Jackson and Jacari on Thursday night, they had a couple
of milestones. We touched on it earlier this morning, but
two thousand career points for Jackson and one thousand for Jakari.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
H Yeah, I'm not sure any of us, in particular,
maybe myself really understand you know, what those two are
doing and what they've done in their college career, and
you know, me, it's always about better, and you know,
it's it's the little things off the ball defensively and
you know, playing off two feet offensively, and you know,
you just get so caught up in the moment of
the game of executing your principles over and over and

(20:13):
I think that's a good thing. I think that's the standard,
and we want to keep hitting that. But then all
of a sudden, you go and you pick up the
box score and you see two guys with thirty points.
You see one guy just eclipse two thousand points. Another
guy just clipped a thousand points like it just doesn't
happen very often. And to witness those things firsthand, to
witness those things on one team, I think the other
thing that's very unique about this group. And I remember

(20:35):
a clip early on where you know, Jackson was leading
us and scoring, and a half half court there's that
loose ball and he decides to drop the Javis who
goes in and lays it in. You go to our
game against Kansas City and at Kansas City and Jakari
has eight assists. And again, those those guys are leading
scorers and and they're going to probably continue to be.
It's just the way they play, it's the way we play.

(20:56):
But you know that I also want to give them
credit as not just lead scorers, but as winners. And
we've really challenged this group. You've been around in some
of those postgame pregame conversations about you know, are you
gonna be a leading scorer. You're gonna be a leading
scorer and impacting winning, And I think and hope our
group is really starting to hear that message and understand
those things to challenge Jacari again to help, you know,

(21:18):
finish defensive possessions and Jackson, you know what did I
see you're you know on our monitor today as we
were shooting the TV twenty six, six and seven. I mean,
that's just I mean, you know, in crucial moments in
college basketball in mid February, those are tremendous marks and
just really proud of those guys. But again they'll be
the first to tell you they're the sum of all
of our parts. And because the floor is so space,

(21:39):
because it's an unselfish group, they're able to do the
things that they're doing.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
When you talk about becoming more than just a scorer
or a rebound or whatever, the archetype is a winner
to me. I kind of see like good teammate is
also a big thing. Doing stuff for the team above
any individual.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
One hundred percent. And as you go in into our
locker room and you look on the wall just to
your right, it's very simple. It's a it's a gold wall,
yellow wall, and there's nothing on it except for it's
amazing what can be accomplished when no one cares against
the credit. And I mean, and every successful individual that
I've watched go on and play a high level of
basketball of Ben Woodside, a Taylor Brawn, a Lawrence Alexander now,

(22:20):
a Tyson Ward, and you know, there's a myriad of
other guys they've been a part of successful teams. And
the same the same thing that myself and our program
are looking for is the same thing professional teams, professional scouts,
professional agents are looking for. They need to win, right,
That's how you continue to move up the ranks, that's
how you continue to get get paid, that's how you
keep your job and those things. And so you know,

(22:43):
certainly scoring is a part of winning basketball games. Let's
let's make that loud and clear. But in the same sense,
there's so many other ways to impact the game and
impact winning and so to speak, and and and those
guys are doing in a lot of way shapes and forms.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
You have to curry on Saturday against never at four
steels in the game as well, what can you say
about the defensive effort.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
I mean, that's great, and and just the way that
you know, dumb me has built our defensive system. You know,
we don't take a lot of chances you know. But
but what we're starting to see is that urgency on
the ball, the stands, the engagement, the communication, those things
I go back, and that's the frustrating part of being
a coach is, you know, we start a little bit
slow Saturday against Stanver, and I didn't love our energy

(23:25):
and spirit, and then we go on a five or
six minute stretch where it is just absolutely beautiful basketball
both ends of the floor. I mean, we are competing,
flying around our pace, offensively moving the ball. The balls
going through the room. It's not going through the room
on the other end, and I mean, it's just a
thing of beauty. And as a coach, you see that
and you want to bottle that up and that becomes
a standard and expectation all the time, and you know,

(23:46):
certainly that's probably unrealistic, but it's not unrealistic for me
to hope, right, And you know, I mean we needed
every bit of that, and it's encouraging to see our
guys start to understand those things, you know, more and
more as we as we wind down a stretch.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
It was a nineteen nothing run the stretch that you're
referring to on Saturday against Denver, and I asked you
about it in the post game on the radio in
the fact, but kind of zooming out again, I think
a lot of people will point to, Okay, you scored
nineteen in a row, but the other part of that
is you held them down to zero in about a
five minute stretch.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Yeah, exactly. And I think that's what it takes is
I'm also well aware I'm coaching eighteen to twenty two
year olds, and so a lot of their spirit is
going to be on making shots. That's certainly gonna help
who you are defensively, and that was certainly the case
in that stretch. But also then good teams know that
we're gonna have walls, we're gonna have stretches offensively where
maybe the ball isn't going through the through the hole

(24:40):
as much, but you can still continue to get those stops.
And a lot of times those stops then lead to
open floor opportunities for our guys to get out and
play offense in space and transition. And you know, it's
really just a counter productive and I don't know if
that probably that's a double negative there. It's a duly
productive way to you know, really, you know, go from

(25:00):
whatever we were eight or nine down to you know,
all the way up to eight or nine mm hmm.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
I think they in football. I call it complimentary football.
I think that's that's complimentary basketball, right.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
I love it, And that's you know, let's run the
damn ball. Yeah, and let's stop them from running the
damn ball. And then you know, do play special teams
as well, block tackle and don't get penalties.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
That's been our analogy. Yeah, all your long. Coach Richmond

just put your name and info in the prize bowl
and we will draw for them here at the end
of the show, Coach, We'll do one more with you
and then we'll let you go. If you've got any

(28:25):
questions for coach, drop them on Facebook or text or
call us. It's a big week. They'll come it up.
We've got one practice and the next thing you know,
we're on the road at Brookings and then it'll be
Grand Forks on Saturday, SDSU and U n D. What
comes to mind when you've got this kind of road
rivalry week on the horizon.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
Just a quiet little week, right, Just a quiet little week.
It's just more basketball games. That's what I'm supposed to
say as a coach right now. You know, again, tomorrow morning,
we're gonna get after it and continue to implement the
game plan against obviously a very talented South Dakota State team,
and we're gonna go day ov and head down there.
And this is an outfit as playing extremely well in
South Dakota State, but also a place where we went

(29:03):
in last year, and we're able to take care of business.
And I'm excited. I'm excited for the opportunity. They've got
a great, brand new facility, They've they've got a fan
base that's very energetic and passion and and to me
that that's February college basketball. That's what you want. You
want to be challenged, you want to be in those
hostile environments a little bit. And and I'm assuming on
Saturday afternoon we're not going to have many friends up north.

(29:25):
And I'm okay with that too, because I'm sure there's
people in this crowd that aren't great friends with them
up north as well. And I think that's what that's
what makes again college basketball, the rivalries, the different shades
of colors, and the different shades of green in this state.
You know all all what it's about. And but the
bottom line is is these challenges on the road against
rivalry schools for us are our opportunities for us to

(29:46):
continue to grow and compete and maybe improved seeding, but
but but but more than anything, continued to establish you
know who we're going to be going into Suo Falls.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
How fun is it when you're in an atmosphere like
that and it's kind of like buys it against the world.
I remember last year in Brookings, the guys really had
to band in and band together in a tough back
and forth game, find a way in overtime, and it
ended up coming down to a game winning tip by
Noah Pederson. But there's got to be something that kind
of kicks in to you as a competitor when you're

(30:18):
in a game like this.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
I absolutely love it and I make mention of it
all the time. Don't get on the bus if you're soft,
don't get on the bus if you're scared, you know,
and all those things. And you know, from day one
we talk about a very tight little circle, you know,
and and you know who's texting your early in the season,
who's texting you after a loss, and those those people
become your your your core, right that your core that
you're going to stay with and in in tough moments

(30:41):
and all those things. Because you know, I know this.
When we beat Butler, which is great, I had a
bunch of text messages and that's great. I love hearing
from those different people. But you know, it's those moments
when it's like you said, your back's against the wall,
you're in the corner. It's us against the world mentality,
and that's really what it takes. But but I think
it's also then to make it make sense to it's
five versus five. The court length is the same and

(31:03):
as a eighteen to twenty two to twenty three year old,
can you process the game the same way? And that's
really what it's about, is having that poise, having that maturity,
having that experience to go execute Bison basketball in tough
hospital environments.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
Looking at STSU coach, we had them here in Fargo
a couple of weeks ago. It was a ten point loss,
pretty close the entire way. They had that twenty nothing run,
which was a big turning point in the game. We
were just talking about the nineteen nothing round that we
had against Denver. Kind of being on the flip side,
I'm sure you've watched the game back and evaluated things.

(31:36):
What are your takeaways and kind of any adjustments you
went to so.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
Well, I think Oscar Coff is obviously playing as well
as anybody in the league, and that's always been Hando
in Southa Costa State staple. They're gonna play through their
big guy, and they've got obviously tremendously complimentary parts. And
they're not even complimentary, they're just really good players. Joe
Silers as good as there is in the league, and
Owen Larson seems to be playing better and better, and
so they've got, they got really good parts. But I
thought there was two stretches in that game where you

(32:01):
know that that twenty zero stretch that you talked about,
and then there was a stretch to start the second
half where they just got us, and then we were
never able to you know, really kind of chop it
back down to a one or two possession thing. I
think we got it to six, we may have got
it into four, but then they would just always make
that play. And those that goes back to the top
of the hour that we were talking about, all those

(32:22):
little things that maybe don't show up in a box score,
and are we going to be able to execute those things?
Are we gonna be able to do those things? What's
our will to do those things when our backs against
the wall? Because you know, make no mistake that South
Kosta State on Wednesday night's going to go on a run.
And I'm not even sure what they call their new place.
It's not for ust anymore, but it's gonna get loud
and it's gonna feel like the world's caven enemy, but

(32:43):
it's not. And for us to be able to understand
those moments, to react in those moments and move on
to what's next, and you look at the core values
of buys in basketball and endurance, it's no matter the circumstances,
being able to execute and move on. And there's a
reason that that's one of our core values.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Last one, before we let you go, I wanted to
ask here with the audience of those listening back home,
because we talked about it on TV and that'll come
out later this week. But the new record for threes,
I know you get a chuckle out of that. Yeah,
we set the single season record with three hundred and
forty two. Would you ever, what would your response have
been if I came to you at August it said,

(33:20):
you know what, this is gonna be the the most
threes that a Bison team has ever made, and they're
gonna set that record with three games.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
I don't think I get enough credit here, Like I mean,
let's let's make this about me here and all this
I'm the shooting, I'm the shooting, I'm the shooting coach
and all this. Now, I will say this, which surprised me,
is you know both now one and two or under
my watch, So as much crap as I get at
the lack of offense, you know, but I think the
thing that's pretty pretty remarkable about it is that there's

(33:47):
still you know, guaranteed four games left and possibly and
hopefully you know more than that too. But it's really
been a cool adaptation. It's really been a cool embrace.
I can't say enough and give enough credit to Luke
Shragi and him implementing it. It's been a perfect marriage
of having, you know, Mason Miller coming from Indiana State
and playing this system a little bit, but at the

(34:10):
very very end of the day, all of our guys
being able to go out and execute, for our guys
to be able to spend the time in the lab
and work on their shots, to work on their game,
and then when the lights are on and the bullets
are flying, so to speak, to go out there and
execute it. It's not an easy shot, it's not. It's
farther away from the rim, and that's how the percentages
can go down. But our guys make it look effortlessly

(34:30):
right now. I believe, you know, Mason Miller's shooting percentage
to Cardi White has really gotten back into a clip jacksonimony.
We forget a six ' ten and he's doing those
things to Javis Miller has had his moments. Brandon Watkins
has had his moments. Andy Stefanowitz, you know in a
couple of big you know, hit a couple of big
ones the other the other day. Noel Federson at his
size has hit a couple. So again, you know, just

(34:50):
across the board of some of all of our parts
being able to knock that down is it's a fun
brand of basketball. And we need to continue to find
ways to shoot the three. Well, we need continue to
find ways to get to the free throw line and
get paid there as well. And that's gonna make us
a better and better team as we can continue to
diversify that portfolio, so to speak.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
I love it. As long as they're going in, we're
gonna keep on liking them.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Absolutely. What's wrong? What's wrong with that?

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Right there? One more point?

Speaker 3 (35:15):
Why wouldn't we?

Speaker 6 (35:16):
Right?

Speaker 2 (35:16):
Three is greater than two? Is, Coach Regul.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
I'm not very good at math, but I do know
that that.

Speaker 2 (35:21):

Third year with the NDSU program. Cam, it's great to
see you, man. I'm so pumped up that we get
to have you on the radio. Thanks for joining us,
and how are you tonight? Appreciate it good, I'm good.

Speaker 18 (39:40):
It was a little cold today, a little cold today,
but doing well, doing well. Practice is finished up well
today and yeah, it's great to be here with you guys.
So appreciate the energy and thank you for the welcome.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Absolutely, man, it's pretty awesome to be in the mix
down the home stretch. You played at Dayton, we can
get into that a little bit. But now you've been
Abison for the last three years on the coaching staff.
Could you tell us about your experience and how you
came to Fargo and became a member of the Indians.

Speaker 21 (40:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (40:10):
Absolutely, it's been a blest. It's been a blessing. Originally
from Chicago, I worked in engineering following my graduation year
for about a year and connected with one of the
coaches on staff at the time, Spencer Walker, and you know,
the ball just kept rolling from there. I wanted to
get back to the game. I learned so much while
I was playing at Dayton, while I was in school,

(40:32):
and yeah, I just had I just felt like I
had to get back on the court and you know,
pass that knowledge on and give it back. So here
I am and it's been a blessing.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
Like I said, So, would you ever have envisioned Fargo
being that the place where you were Atland to start
this coaching I did not.

Speaker 18 (40:48):
I did not, actually hadn't. I hadn't heard of Fargo
before I got there got the opportunity, But when I
got here, it was such a surprise and it was
a great surprise, you know, it was. I mean I
had everything I needed here and yeah, I mean got
a family away from home here. So it's been good.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
That's awesome to hear what was going through your mind
when when you first came here on an interview or
visit whatever that might have looked like.

Speaker 18 (41:13):
I was excited, man, I was. I was extremely excited,
you know, from the phone calls I had before I
got here, and actually visited in the May, before the May,
before the summer. I got here. I visited here and
you know, got a chance to meet the current players,
the staff, and it was great. It was great. I
was super I was. I was pumped, man, I was pumped.

Speaker 2 (41:34):
No doubt. It's been awesome to see you here in
year three now. I'm sure there's been a lot of
comfort that you've gained. H How what are some of
the things that you've picked up as an assistant coach
that you might not have known before but you've learned
here in these last couple of years.

Speaker 18 (41:49):
Everything. Honestly, it's as a player, you know, you don't
really see this side of the basketball too much, you know,
so it's been great to learn from this perspective, I
mean from the jump, and you know, I kind of
got thrown into the fire a little bit as a ga.
I mean, we were starting camp season right away and
I was told, hey, you know you got to go

(42:10):
out there and run a camp. I said, Okay, we're
gonna figure this thing out and keep it moving. And
that was great. You know, there's things like that that
that really you know, put you out there and help
you learn. You learn from those experiences and it's been great.
You know, I've I handle operations for the program. That's
not something I say was was my strong suit in
the past, but you know, since doing that for the

(42:32):
past three years, you know, it's definitely something becomes something
that has become a strength of mine. And you know,
I'm able to take those things and take the things
that I've learned here and you know, continue on, continue on.
But what I have so it's good.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
With operations, You've got to be organized and you got
to be able to think out your feet if something
doesn't go according to plan.

Speaker 18 (42:51):
I mean you handle flights, I mean meals and deal
with everything scheduling for each trip, and uh yeah, you
got to be on your you gotta be you know,
got your eyes across your t's and yeah, it's it's
a lot sometimes, don't get me wrong, It's definitely a lot.
But you know, I have coaches such as Spencer Wilker,
who was once in that role, who has taught me

(43:13):
so much. Uh, Coach Richmond who has extremely pacialed me
from the jump. You know, I stepped into that role
as a GA, you know, so his patience with me
and teaching me the things that I need to know
to help the program operate, you know, it's it's definitely
been good. It's definitely been good. So I appreciate them
for that.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
Well, I can tell you this, my friend, there is
nobody better when it comes to operations than CAM Career.
I mean it's it's as seamless as can be, on
time everywhere. Everybody's got their bags ready to go, everybody's
got their food ready to go. You cannot beat it.
So we appreciate you, man, We.

Speaker 18 (43:50):
Well, I appreciate you all. You know, it takes people
who are willing to listen to That's half the battle,
right there, people who are willing to listen and do
as there. So I mean it's good, it's good.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Tell me a little bit about this year's team. What
did you think of them when you first got everybody
in the gym for that first practice, and how things
played out here now with three games to go.

Speaker 18 (44:11):
Yeah, so from the jump, we got our team together
and they jailed right away. You know, this is a
team that right now you look at their relationship with
each other, with their teammates, and it's it's it's great.
You know, they're they're they're bond on and off the court.
It's just great. Like there you see them hanging out

(44:32):
with each other off the court, and you know, the
things that they do off the court, the relationships they
build off the court definitely is translated on the court.
But yeah, from the jump, you mean you didn't you
didn't know what to expect. You know, we were installing
new offensive and defensive principles and this is a new team,
right a team that had never played together before. I mean,
we we had seven returning players and eight new new guys. So, uh,

(44:56):
you don't know what to expect. But I mean, like
I said, from the jump, you know, they they bond
it well, and that translated onto the court. So we
had guys who have come with experience. We definitely brought
in a lot of older guys and they have experience
with winning, experience with good basketball, and so that definitely
made the transition seamless for them. And yeah, it's been

(45:17):
great being able to be around those guys. They're they're fun,
They're fun to be with, fun to coach. You know,
they keep me on my toes, they keep keep a
smile on my face. And yeah, I mean that's that's
that's why we do it. That's why we do it
is to you know, make these guys, keep these guys
feeling good.

Speaker 17 (45:32):
Man.

Speaker 2 (45:32):
So I was gonna say they're they're a good group.
They're a loose and fun group when the time is right.
They definitely have a personality.

Speaker 18 (45:40):
Absolutely absolutely, And like I said, you know, they they
they come from different places and you know, you bring
that together, you build something special.

Speaker 2 (45:49):
I love it. Well. Coach Greer is here with us
for the next fifteen minutes or so. We're gonna take
a break, but we're just getting started. When we come back,
we'll chat some more. Coach Cameron Greer, this is the

Cam Greer is with US Bison assistant coach in his
third year with the NDSU program. We've got some questions
that are coming in here for you Cam on our
Facebook page. This one comes down from Brian, who's normally
here of the audience, but he's listening back in Arizona
right now, he's got some warmer weather, so we appreciate you, Brian,
Yes it is, he says. Coach career, What are your

(52:03):
specific duties with our awesome Bison team. So you touched
on it a little bit there in our first segment,
but if you go a little more in depth, what
a day to day in the season looks like for you?

Speaker 18 (52:14):
Yeah, I mean everything logistics is my responsibility, you know,
in terms of travel, book flights, hotels, that's all done
and at the beginning of the season. But throughout the season,
of course, I'm planning each trip right, making sure everyone
is where they need to be when they need to
be there, making sure everyone is fed, making sure the

(52:36):
buses on time, make sure we were leaving for the
gym one time, make sure we have gym spaces reserve
on the road. So everything logistics that you can think of,
that's pretty much me. So yeah, on top of that,
I've been grateful for the assistant coach title. I was
able to step into that role last year and that

(52:58):
allows me to get on the floor more. So, you know,
Coach Richmond is definitely I'm grateful for it. He's given
me more responsibility on the court with the guys, you know,
in terms of you know, working guys out more often,
just so I'm not you know, getting out of the
office sometimes and you know taking on that that assistant
coach role, you know, taking on those responsibilities. So as

(53:19):
long as I got my my my working order with operations,
like yeah, I'm able to step onto the court more
and handle more more on court duties.

Speaker 2 (53:28):
So how fun is it when you get to go
run with the guys a little bit if you're you're
helping out with the scout team or working out with
them individually.

Speaker 18 (53:35):
Fun is a is a as a that's a word
I would say, the funnest is a way to describe it.
It's good, though, it's good. It's good to get back
on the court. I'm starting to realize, you know, I'm
getting older. I'm getting I'm getting a lot older. I
mean I'm not that old, but yeah, my body is
is definitely telling me, okay, like you're slowing down now.

(53:56):
So but it's good. It's good. It keeps me young,
you know. It's is good to get that competition, especially
with this group. Man, they're so fun. They enjoy playing
with each other and there's always a good atmosphere when
in practices, so you know, just getting a little bit
of that that that that sense of competition and being

(54:16):
with the team like it's it's good, it's good, it's fun.

Speaker 2 (54:19):
Yeah, it's awesome to see. I love I love seeing
you out there, and I know the guys that they
have a good time with it as well. We're gonna
take one last time out here with coach Career, will
come back and wrap things up. It is the Bison

I was he was one that I modeled my game
after growing up. And you know, he's He's definitely a
hometown hero. So Derek Rose for sure. And it was
good to, you know, see his jersey go up in
the rafters at the United States recently. So yeah, no.

Speaker 2 (57:47):

Chicago kid, for sure. Anybody you'd like to shout out
before we sign off? Family friends, anybody listening back home?
Who do you want to shout out?

my my my family back home, my parents, my brother,
and my god brother. You know he's sitting back there.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
