Speaker 1 (00:00):
Really Welcome to the Bison Basketball Show with head coach
David Richmond on the Pioneer Seeds Bison Sports Network from
lear Field. Now for the latest on NDSU men's basketball.
Here's the Voice of the Bison, Sam Niederman.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Alrighty, Bison Nation, welcome back on it to the holiday
and here in Fargo. It is our Bison Basketball Coaches
Show live here for you on this Monday night, March
the third, two thousand and twenty five. Great to have
everybody here along with us, our perfect attendance club back
in the house. We appreciate you guys. Great to see
some new faces as well. It's your first time here,
(00:43):
which it might be. We're here every Monday night throughout
the basketball season and talking a little bit of NDSU hoops.
You cannot beat it. Best time of year. Coach Richmond
is here with us. Coach, great to see you. Happy Monday,
setting the tone one more time before the tournament, and
we're gonna do it here in the ball for college basketball.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
We got all these new people that came out to
see you, Sam. I think it's a great opportunity here
on a Monday night too.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
But yeah, absolutely, Like we talked about this morning.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
It's March. It's March madness. The weather feels like it.
We virtually have almost no snow, which is terrific. You know,
just a great time of year, really exciting.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
You cannot beat it.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I'd say we've built up a pretty good draw here
over the last few weeks. It's been pretty awesome to
have everybody out here. Don't have any tickets to give away, unfortunately,
because we're out at home games. We wrapped everything up
last week inside the Shack with Senior Day, so it's
all attention towards two falls of the Sun League tournament,
which will get underway on friday' that's the focus. And golly,
(01:45):
it just really went by fast here we go.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
It worked extremely fast.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I mean, in some senses, it feels like, you know,
you look at the Santa Clara win or the Butler win,
and you know it feels like you can just you know,
relive that in a split second. The same sense, it
feels like you know that was three four months ago,
which it was, and you know, it's been a just
a I've talked about it in June to this group.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Just the recharging this group was some.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Fun and it's been just as as you've experienced with us, Sam,
But it's just a blast to be around these guys.
And you know, certainly we haven't been perfect, but through
all the imperfections, you know, we've grown, We've stayed tight,
you know, in a lot of ways, playing our best
basketball here down the stretch and and some things, and
still battling through some adversity. I thought Wednesday night against
South Dakota was a was a microcosm of that. So again,
(02:31):
just extremely proud of this group for everything they've accomplished
this this far, and also very very excited as we
you know, prepare this week for the best right the
Summer League tournament and a unique opportunity for us. You
turn around and you play when Wednesday night against South
Dakota and you got no games in between and a
ten day break, and you turn around, you play them again,
and you know, some some senses it might tell you
(02:54):
be an easy prep. In the same senses, I don't
think we could take anything for granted. And we've got
to make sure we're not in eyes crossed teas looking
for those little possessions here or there, you know, to
make sure we're teed up, ready to go. Giving ourselves,
you know, the everything we have, everything we can have
to pull out a victory come Friday night.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well, it'll be your eleventh tournament coach as a head
coach here at North Dakota State, and you've been a
part of plenty of others as an assistant as well.
What comes to mind with this week and all of
its demands.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I think the biggest thing that we talk about is
it's such an exciting period and when you get down
there and to experience the venue, the atmosphere and all
those things, and we really talk about being present. You know,
being present in each and every moment is exciting as
an opportunity as it's going to be on Friday night,
we need to make sure we're prepared for that opportunity, so,
you know, being present, being where our feed are at,
(03:43):
you know, this week in practice and fine tuning some things,
making some of those adjustments that we talked about. We
do some really unique things like Wednesday night, we're going
to do a family meal where we get together just
our tight family and you know, share stories throughout the
season and each guy will draw another name and talk
about a specific maybe any situation, but then an impact moment.
You know, there's just some things like that that the
(04:04):
build up is really special to me too, when we
talk about a family of family culture, and obviously you
know this week of prep. You know tomorrow we'll start
a three day prep and get after it tomorrow morning,
and you know, walk through some things on Wednesday before
we you know, go live one more time Thursday before
we head down there too. And so, like I said,
it's crazy the tournamental kickoff Wednesday night with OREU in
(04:25):
Kansas City, and you know, the quarterfinals Thursday night and
us being a part of it Friday, and let's go here,
we go.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
I can't wait to potentially hear some of the stories
on Wednesday.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
There'll be some good memories.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
We've had a lot of good laughs here on the
on the program, getting to know the guys, which has
been awesome and like you said, just a great group.
I mean, as you reflect on regular season now and
the books get ready for postseason, there was a lot
along the way of improvement, guys really kind of coming
into their own and just a lot of different little
moments throughout the year.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, I think you know, as you reflect back, Sam,
you talk about like how excited we were at the
experience that we gained through the portal and some of
those things, and then you'd take for granted you underestimate, well,
we don't have any experiences together.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
And you saw some of that early.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
You saw that in our exhibition against Morehead, You saw
that in some you know, a tough to feed against
Illinois State. We blew one against Bakersfield. But then you
could see some things starting to come a little bit
in that Bakersfield game. And then as we started that
Santa Clara game, as we started to fight back and
then got that win, and that really springboarded some confidence things.
And as we were able to get Jackson healthy, you know,
(05:34):
post that Southern Illinois game, and some things we really
got in a role. But I'm such a believer in
you know, what comes first the chicken or the egg, right,
is it the success leading to happiness or happiness and togetherness.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Leading to the success.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
And I firmly believe with this group is you know,
as new as they were together, because there were guys,
holdover guys, there were high school kids, there were transfer kids.
The fact that they came together so you know, so quickly,
is really a credit to them checking their egos and
you know, wanting to be part of something bigger than
just themselves.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
And you've seen that. Anytime you can win twenty.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
One games already in the regular season, in particular at
the mid major level, that's a terrific mark, Sam, And
that just doesn't happen with talent. That just doesn't happen
with you know, this or that. It's a culmination of
a bunch of things. And at the end of the day,
it's toughness, it's togetherness, it's love, it's wisdom, it's integrity,
you know, you know, and it's the endurance piece.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
And this group has been just an absolute blast of beer.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Though that's got to be the best as a coach too,
in your staff. I imagined it is when there's a
joy factor when you get to go into the gym.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I've've always said that I wish so many people could
come into a college locker room and just the the
different types, the body shapes, the body colors, the backgrounds,
the ethnicities, the religions, you know, and all all coming
together for one common goal and it's just a really
cool special environment.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
And you know, thankfully for me, I'm blessed. You know.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I get to help create that, you get to help
manufacture and develop it. And thankfully these guys have really
bought into those things. And it's just like I said
million times already and I'm gonna say it a million
times more here as we move forward, and just a
really really special group of young men.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Well, we cannot wait to see what's in store for
him here once we get down to Sue Falls. Should
be a fun weekend at the Premiere Center for the
Summit League tournament. We'll break down the opening round matchup
against USD. Obviously saw him on Wednesday, take a look
at the scouting report there. Certainly had a couple of
big guys step up in a big way. And the
senior night win against USD as well. We'll break all
(07:34):
that down with Coach as we go throughout tonight's program.

are your friends and neighbors. People you can count on
First Western Bank, and trust you can bank on sor righty, welcome.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Back on it.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
It is the Buyers and Basketball Coaches show here at
the holiday and in Fargo. Love having everybody along with
us here on this beautiful Monday night in Fargo. Great
to have a fun new crowd with some of the
folks coming in from out of town. Great to see you.
We appreciate the support only rule that we have with
the show. We've built it up all your long only rule.
(10:43):
You got your loud, that's it. As long as you're
you're loud, you can hang out with us for the
rest of the hour and a half.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
We got coach that we're in.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Right, they can bring some of that cheer, that loud
cheer down to Sioux Falls. Now I can't say the
shack because they're already done with that piece, but bring
it down to a great environment down there in swe Falls.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, Friday night only gonna be a couple hour drive.
As we know you, I'm assuming you've.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Been doing a really good job of selling that only
a couple hours plus type thing.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
It's you realize, I mean Vermilion, it takes about it's
that's a long four to get down there.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
He's an Alabama guy. I bet he knows all about
Grant Nelson.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Yeah he might, he might.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
They had a tough one on Saturday against the Balls.
But yes, there you go, a little Crimson tide had
it here for the ball or for the show. So
but yeah, I was gonna say, coach, you doing it
so many times?
Speaker 5 (11:33):
Have you found like.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
A good routine for when you play and coming in
twenty four hours out and making sure.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
You're I could tell you this.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Yeah, we're not in it for second place, which we've
been in a couple of years, and then we're surely
not in it for losing in the quarters like we
did last year.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
And so some of that routine we've mixed up.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
We're gonna, say, at a different hotel and we're gonna
do some different things. And I always say I'm not superstitious,
but apparently I am a little bit. And no, I
really don't think you know there there's certainly some rhythm
to it. I'm big into what I said before is
enjoy every moment of this thing, and no matter what,
when we're done, and hopefully it's posts, you know, the
(12:11):
Sioux Falls experience, but this will be the last time.
You know, you're going through the waning moments of the
twenty four to twenty five version of the Buys and
Basketball family and to really enjoy every bit of it.
And you can talk to the guys who played thirty
one games and you know, hopefully we're going to play
thirty four plus games as we go through. But you
know what's really cool is a lot of times when
we get together Wednesday night or you go beyond that,
(12:32):
it never comes. The stories don't relate to a specific game, right.
They relate to a bus ride, they relate to an
experience in the hotel, they relate to a moment in
the locker room after a game. Those things, and you know,
those are what's special. Right, you're creating those memories. You know,
certainly on the court and we've had some great ones
this year, and make no mistake about it, but a
lot of times those memories that get spoke of, and
those things are your experiences, the relationships, the friendships, the brotherhood,
(12:56):
things that that happen off the court.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
We're gonna get it into a little more on the
matchup with USD. But to reflect back to Wednesday Senior night,
we were just talking about it with our guy Flinter,
who's been here every week.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
I don't know where you went, Flinter, but thanks again
for coming out. What a ballgame that was to close
out the season.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
It really was.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
And and I think you know, we we was we
were so much on the fly last week. You know,
we we found out that Jackson's you know, got some
lingering injury issues that we need to make sure that
we're smart for and and and if if, if he's
gonna have the best chance to be successful this weekend.
You know, it was important not to throw him out
there on Wednesday night. And we're still that's still a
fluid situation as we're working through. Literally as I'm as
(13:37):
I'm driving to the you know, to the shock to
the Shield Center on Wednesday night, I'm getting information on
on Brennan's situation and he's dealing with some daging things.
It's that time of year when everybody's going through some things.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
And the thing I'm.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Most proud of is is our group didn't make excuses
and I thought, you know, we joked about it this
that game wasn't going in the Naysmith Hall of Fame
or anything like that. It wasn't the most pretty thing
in the world. But come late February, come March, all
victories are very beautiful to me. And you know, we
were just talking with with Flynnard, like just the effort
that we've got from a Derek to Set in particular,
(14:11):
who hadn't played a lot. There's some just little unique,
little hustle plays that didn't show up that Andy Stefano
Whitz makes that you know, he dies on the floor,
taps a loose ball to Derek, Derek lays it in
uh Luke kasuki diving. You know, Mason threw him a
little bit of an errant pass and Luke dies for it.
And again, like you just you make the most of
your opportunities. And and I think that's been big. We've
(14:32):
we've done some unique things at the end of practice
where maybe some of our lower minutes guys have been competing.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
And challenging themselves.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
And I think moments like that have been good and
to prepare those guys to keep in that competitive spirit
a little bit, and I thought some guys really maximize
even JB.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
You know, we threw him.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Out there a little bit and and he scored four points,
and you know to Javis, you know, goes in and
and Jakari willed down the stretch. You know, Will does
some some baskets and you know, Mason Miller didn't have
a great night shooting, but you know what you're gonna get.
You're gonna you trust that you're going to get that
effort and compete on both ends of the floor. And
as undersized as we were, you know, we still won
(15:09):
the glass by over ten and so just really proud
of our guys. It wasn't the you know, the most beautiful,
mosaic offensive performance by any means, but at the end
of the day, to have four more points in the
couch too, that's a beautiful thing to me.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Well, coach, you talked about Derek Descent, and I know
everybody was raving about his performance in the coming days
after last Wednesday. Could you speak to the fortitude that
he demonstrated where, hey, maybe your your number hasn't been
called as much as you would have liked, but when
it was, he was.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
Right there like he had been ready this entire time.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
I mean that's such a great word, fortitude or you know,
we talk one of our core values about being endurance.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
And you know it just again, whether it's.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Me, whether it's Derek, whether it's anything in between, just
the minutes haven't been there as consistently as maybe he
would have liked, or we would liked, or thought and
all those things. But you can't cry over spilt milk.
And Derek's owned some things. But in particular, what Derek's
done is stay ready. You can't get ready. You got
to be ready. And Derek was ready when.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
His moment was called on.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
And you know, he had sixteen points, which is loud,
he had thirteen rebounds, which is loud.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
But it was just the spirit that he played with,
the energy.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
You know, you mentioned it as we were visiting, you know,
this morning on the TV show taping that.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
Like the heart that he played with, the hustle that
he played with. You know, just you talk to a
guy like Flinner. Here we're sitting in the Red River Valley.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I mean, this is this is egg country, you know,
this is this is blue collar people. And I thought
Derek played with a blue collar, spirited, blue collar mentality
on Wednesday night, and rallied the crowd. The crowd rallied
behind him, and I was just really really pleased and
proud of Derek.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
Did you get to see the photo?
Speaker 2 (16:49):
I think it might have been circulating a little bit
on our basketball social media accounts, but it was a
great shot after an offensive rebound and a putback where
there's three kayus there in red just flying around and
there's Derek ready to put it back up and he
just send them all off.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
I haven't seen it. You think our marketing people would
send that to me?
Speaker 3 (17:07):
If there is any marketing people here by by chance
or anything like that. You know, Palem's up, you know,
Eric's palms up over there. That's just you know, excuses, excuses. Yeah,
but but again I think that's it, Like, you know,
so much, Andy's already kicking things around the bar.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Let's get him settled down here.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
I think so much gets made of of a pretty
jump shot or you know, a big dunk or all that.
But and and those are those are great, don't get
me wrong. And a lot of times those do show
up on social media. Those do those do show up
on the you know, the ESPN things like that, But
for me, it's your value is in the winning plays
that you're gonna make consistently, your extra effort to heart,
to hustle, all those little things.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
How do you respond from a mistake. And we just
had a group out there that was just locked in and.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
They were going to figure out a way they were
gonna they weren't going to have any excuse be a
part of what was happening. And again maybe this is
you know, I get a little crap once in a
while about I don't like offense or anything like that.
But that was a Dave Richmond victory on Wednesday night,
right Like, here's what we got. These are the tools
that are in our bag. Let's go figure out a
way to build this thing.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
And those guys did that.
Speaker 5 (18:14):
That's college basketball right there, making some adjustments.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
I want to show you that picture once we go
to commercial here.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Yeah, and we'll thank you. I mean, at least you'll
do that for us, not the marketing.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
I've got your coach always.
Speaker 2 (18:24):

Athletics and the Bison are powered by beef. North Dakota's
beef producers are proud to provide real fuel for real athlete.
Sam Niederman, Coach Richmond here with you, will be with
you for the next forty minutes or show as we
(22:11):
hit the top of the hour. Then Jory Collins or
excuse me, actually not Jory tonight doing Geisert is going
to be in for joy along with Andy Rickoff. Avery
Koonan's going to join us as well. So we'll chat
some Bison women's hoops starting at seven, get ready for
the Summit League tournament as well.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
If you get Avery's been okay lately, huh, really good?
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Huh, She's been great.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
You can just see like that that young lady's put
in the work, and that's that as a coach's perspective,
you love that someone that's put in the work and
that you know to reap those benefits, just you know,
and they had a great week at home to close
out and build some momentum into the tournament. And Jory's
a great coach and just become a really good friend
of mine. Just happy, like he's put in a lot
of time and effort into that program and got them trending,
(22:53):
and you know, just as and even trending. They are
in a great spot. They are in a great direction
and to be playing some great basketball and March. I'm
really happy for Avery and Jury and that whole crew.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
You know, we were talking Andy and I Coach, we
were talking a little bit about if we could get
a sweep this weekend and bring back two trophies, that'd
be pretty cool. I might have to have like a
dual parade or something like that.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
I don't think you get any arguments from Joey or
I on that one.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
There might be a few drinks flowing after that one
between the two of us. But yeah, I mean we
both group got all the makings to do those things.
It certainly got to get a couple bounces and you
got to put forth all those things. But you know,
the character, the toughness, the talent, all those things are
there for both squads.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
If you've got a question for Coach, you can drop
it on our Facebook live stream, or you can text
or call us seven oh one four seven six sixteen
sixty Ron and Fargo has a question here Coach of Ron.
We appreciate you all year long some great questions on
our text line. Ron asked, how does game day preparation
differ for the Summit League tournament compared to that during
(23:56):
the regular year.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Yeah, it's a great question, and I think you know
the simple answer, Ron is, hopefully it doesn't change much.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
You know, we become especially coaches.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
You should have seen Coach Drag and I behind the
scenes when as senior day. You know, things were off
by about ten minutes and we were all screwed up
back there. But you really create routine, so you have
a pretty good idea of what to expect leading up
to those games, and you try to build habits. You
try to build routines a little bit, and you know
a lot of times about five hours before the game,
things really kind of start to ramp up. Whether it's
(24:25):
a shoot around to walk through four hours, it's a
pre game. You know, about an hour and forty five
minutes before we're gonna watch some videos, we head over
to the arena or at the arena a little bit
and just try to slowly.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
You know, you've talked about and the guys give me
a little grief, little crap, But we talk about a
slow burn.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
You know, we don't want them to wake up at
eight am for a six pm game being all ready
to go. We want them to kind of slowly ramp
up from a mindset and just really take it all in,
you know. Again, I mean, you know, some of the
best moments of the pregame meals, Well, those guys are
arguing about who's the greatest NBA player?
Speaker 4 (24:57):
Did you see this? And it's just to me, it's annoying,
it's so repetitive.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
But you know what, those guys are back at it
the next you know, going over and arguing, and you know,
in a good spirited way. So it's really Ron about
just enjoying it all and taking it all in and
trying to keep it.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
As consistent as routine as possible.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Not to look too far ahead. But I'll do a
little follow up off of Ron's question. When you have
back to back to back games on a run like this,
what's that turnaround look like getting ready for an opponent
less than twenty four hours.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Well, I think it's you know, I mean, that's fun
to talk about back to back to back.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
But we're we're locked in on one game, right, and.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
If you're fortunate enough to win that game, then you
really feel like you're a part of something.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
And that's really our mindset.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
And if we are fortunate, then you in our case,
you'd wait, you know, a couple three hours to figure
out who that next opponent is. But a lot of
it then just becomes that mental rest, that mental preparation.
You needed to go right back at it, you know
that next night, and you know it is March. And
I think some of that that is why we've been
able to sustain a fair amount of success down and
(26:00):
falls is so much of it is about North Dakota State,
right And and are we.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Going to be a little prepared.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
Are we going to have a couple of things in
our back pocket far as adjustments based on whatever opponent? Absolutely,
but you know, we need to go out there and
block tackling hot kid penalties. We need to defend rebound
and value the basketball and and do some things like
that and get a couple of breaks along the way.
And if we're able to do those things, we can
put ourselves in a position down the stretch to hopefully
get one and then go for the next one. And
(26:25):
that's really our mindset, say present one game at a time.
Speaker 5 (26:28):
Cannot wait.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
It's gonna start Friday night in Sue Falls, seven o'clock
tip once we get going against the Coyotes of USD
Is it seven or six?
Speaker 5 (26:39):
It's six. I'm just realized. It's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
You got me here. I pretty much do everything on
this show.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
I mean, I tell the time, I get the marketing
people lined up, you.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Know, with photos and all this like it's it's a
lot about me. I carry a lot of it. I
blow the whistle, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
It's it's keeping me sharp here, keeping me sharp. No,
I've just got to throw it up.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
I don't catch it right.
Speaker 5 (26:58):
That's it man, Yes, six o'clock, six o'clock Friday. I
gotta be starved too. This is it postseason.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
We'll lind it down. There's no wiggle room. We got
a lock in here. This is it.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
We'll make it happen.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
It'll be uh Friday, six o'clock down at two Falls
as the Bison take on USC. We'll get more into
the matchup with coach take a quick time out here

Not only is it a great dinner, it's great clean too, right,
really quick clean up.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
But just so you know, throw that basket.
Speaker 5 (30:03):
Away and sufficient.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Nobody's out much time or effort after that.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
That is very efficient. That's a great word.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Yeah, don't have to worry about doing dishes or whatever.
They take good carry you here at the holiday in
for sure. So we appreciate everybody coming on out. It's
been fun to have the players as well. Coach, just
you and me tonight the tone setters, as we like
to call us, and we're gonna be bringing it on
home here for this last half hour, but certainly play
more to do. If you've got a question for coach
(30:30):
seven oh one four seven six sixty and sixty, I
did want to ask you about something you're you're referenced
earlier that you talked about in the presser after USD
and you touched on it earlier too, the post practice kind.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
Of compete period. Some of the younger guys.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
I know, obviously we're focused on USD and surviving in
advancing on Friday night, But what have you seen at
this point of the year from some of the guys
behind the scenes with their development.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
Yeah, I mean it's it's really been great.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
And I think too like that development piece is all
been good for an Andy Stefano Witch, It's it's also
been good for a Luke Kasuki and obviously for.
Speaker 4 (31:04):
A Derek des Set.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
So guys that really got extended minutes and and really
played well in extended minutes Wednesday night. And and Andy
has done, you know, just a really good job.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
He got in FOULT.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
I mean, he was great against SDSU a couple of
weeks ago, and he got a little bit of foul
trouble against un D and I probably kicked myself. I
probably shouldn't have thrown him back in there a little
bit more in the second half. And and he's got
a unique knack for doing some things. And in those
competitive environments where you go shirts and skins, the coaches
kind of step off, you can kind of see guys
true DNA a little bit, and Andy's got that fire
(31:37):
to him. It's been good behind the scenes the Mari Wheeler.
Thomas has has been healthy, he looks great. You're starting
to see some things. It's still a little bit too
inconsistent for me, as I'm honest, but you're starting to
see it a little bit more consistent with trace and Anderson.
I think Trayce and Anderson's got a really bright future
as a buys and basketball player. He's got the size,
(31:58):
he's a terrific young man, and there's plenty of skill.
You know, once he really this that consistent motor, that
consistent mentality, is that that next step for him. Another
guy that I just and we had him on early
in the show with Andy, but I've been extremely impressed
with is Carson Smith. You know, Carson's got an energy
and spirit to him every day. He's got an elite
work ethic, probably sometimes to his own detriment. You know,
(32:21):
he's been getting a little bit of shin splints in
those things, which is you know, it's the good and bad.
Because he's in the gym, his body has changed, you know,
and Carson's a tough, tough kid.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
He's a warrior.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
So in those environments with that foreign four, you're just
you're just seeing different personalities come out as much as
it might be about a skill of making.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
A shot or a rebounder, things like that.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
It's a at the end, at the shince, at the
end of the day, at the beginning of the day,
before you go into a game, you want to know
who you want to go into a back alley with, right,
who's gonna not not figuratively, but you know not you know, figuratively,
not literally, but who's gonna fight?
Speaker 4 (32:55):
Right?
Speaker 3 (32:55):
And I think you see some of those qualities stand
out with Eluke masoup K and as to on a
Witz and Derek just said in particular, and you know,
those environments have provided me an opportunity to see those
things and see those guys progress.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
A little bit.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
And we did some some school work last week a
little bit, had them fill out some things about when
have you been playing your best basketball? And a lot
of those lower mintic guys talked about right now. And
I think a lot of that has been some of
those competitive environments we've done. At the end of the practice.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
I love it they're they're calling their own fouls, right.
It's just kind of like backyard.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Balls, back in the street, back in the y, back
at the armory, you know those things where you know
there wasn't stripes and you know you might have to
shoot for it if it's a questionable call. And you
know we make the point guards keep score a little bit,
and you know we try not to have too much
of an imprentice coaches, but still have some buys in
basketball things reflective in those games.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
And it's been really good.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
I do want to ask you about Andy two on Wednesday,
went down to the basket, had a big circus reverse
layup to it looked like you hit another gear.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
It's just you know, again like I'm just extremely like
and and Derek, the guys that have just stayed the course.
Speaker 4 (34:03):
You know, it's it's some as a as a coach, you.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Play with you trust, right, and we've seen so many
things from a guy like Brendan Watkins. It's some big moments,
right Santa Clair of those two free throws, and you know,
to play the amount of minutes he did against Butler
and and and to have six assists and only one turnover,
the Weaver Steak game, the toughness that he played with
and so you always fall back on that, but you
know Brendan had struggled a little bit now with the injury,
(34:28):
there's just created some opportunity for Andy, and Andy's really
stuck to it again, endurance in these mental fortitude to
just stay and be present. And I mean he's a
smart kid, obviously, the bloodlines that he comes from, with
mom and dad both being college players. What he lacks
maybe in size and stature, he makes up for the
IQ the toughness to compete. I thought there was a
(34:48):
really telling play and you don't really notice it during
the game, but you know, you and I maybe talked
on air off here here already, but that play in
the in the second half of there's a loose ball.
He dives on the floor, quickly instinctively taps it to Derek,
Derek lays it in.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
I mean, those are two monster points in a two
possession game like that.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Sam, Yeah, it was pretty fun to see him step up.
I think the guys enjoyed too, Like, Okay, obviously would
have loved to have Jackson kind of the normal light up,
but it was like, all right, let's go out here
at experiment a little bit.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
This is a good chance.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Yeah, And that's such a great way too. And I
thought you saw some of the ugliness of the experiment
early on. You know, we we've gotten so used to
playing through jacks at the top of the key and
him then you know, really being our point guard. Once
we've prosed half court and dissecting teams, you know, defense
based on what they're doing and how well he can
pass it, how well he.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Can finish, you know, how well he's been shooting and
all the things.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Well, you take that head off your monster, so to speak,
and you're searching a little bit.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
And we looked a little choppy. But what we did
was we competed.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
We defended, you know, really in particular down the stretch
very well and obviously rebounded the basketball great.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
We're gonna take another time out here, coach, and continue

got another question from Ron here, Coach you're gonna go
with the double dip? A couple of questions on the
on the night which.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
We Ron's ready to grow.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
I like that Ron March for n Ron's been prepared
all season long. We appreciate you, Ron. This is a
good one you ready is the they are a Summit
League tournament memory from throughout the years that stands out
the most for coach Richmond.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Well, there's a lot of them. We've had some very
good memories. I think. I think one you know that
really stood.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Out is would have been my second year and we
were in the semi finals against Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne
was the number one seed, I believe, and made a
tough decision to sit a young man just to make
sure that you know, he had his priorities. We all
understood the priorities of buising basketball at the time. And
we got down I believe sixteen, and you know a
(40:32):
lot of probably people are looking at me like I'm crazy.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
You know, what are you doing in this important time
of year.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
And it's always been about life lessons for me and
doing things the right way, and you know the virtue
of the integrity of the character, and we just all
of a sudden started to fight scrap claw and worked
our way back and end up beating Fort Wayne a
in a buzzer beater and I don't know if it's
a buzzer beater, but it was tight down the stretch
like that, and some other guys stepped up and I
got a huge hug from that young man afterwards, and
(40:59):
you know, a special moment. Now we won three games
you know, down there too, and those are obviously terrific memories.
My daughters were talking last night and said, you know, Dad,
we never really see a cry. Probably the last time
I cried was in twenty twenty when I was in
my room after the the you know, we won by
like thirty something, and then we got the tournament canceled,
you know, because of COVID and all those things. But
(41:21):
you know that that, you know, that twenty twenty group
was really really special the way the nineteen group came along,
and then my first year, Lawrence Alexander twenty fifteen, like
what a better way to start, What a way to
bleed confidence into a new head coach by that group too.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
So there's there's a.
Speaker 3 (41:38):
Lot of great memories down there, and some of them
are also behind the scenes too, with our staff and
our players being able to enjoy those moments and swoot
Falls has been very very good to us and hopefully
that continues here, you know, just coming weekend.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Yeah, certainly some big ones were tiring about that same
question with Dexter today earlier on the radio, and he
was talking about the fourteen fifteen year going back to
back after what it is at thirteen fourteen, and then
your first year is head coach beating SDSU as well.
It's pretty cool when you can beat those guys at
their backyard.
Speaker 4 (42:09):
Yeah, I mean, and that's it.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
You know, obviously got a tremendous amount of respect for
that entire program and particularly for coach Anderson. But you know,
that is a pretty special feeling. Like a couple of
Wednesdays ago, when a bunch of Blue are walking up,
you know, out out of the exits, and you know
it's certainly not a numbers game because you're out numbered
down there and you got to go and you got
to beat the jackson.
Speaker 4 (42:29):
Unfortunately. You know, we've been able to do that, you
know a few times down there in siwux Falls.
Speaker 5 (42:34):
No doubt about it. We're gonna stay on track here, coach.
That's what we've learned throughout the whole years.
Speaker 2 (42:38):

Speaker 25 (43:32):

Speaker 5 (45:07):
It is the Byson Basketball Coaches Show.
Speaker 2 (45:10):
Appreciate everybody coming on out our last one before the
Summit League tournament.
Speaker 5 (45:15):
Appreciate all the support all year long.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
We'll save some final thoughts for our last segment here
with Coach Richmond, but still got a big game coming
up on Friday to break down. Let's get into it
with the Kyoes. Coach unique style playing the full court
press kind of extends the game, lots of possessions. What
were your main takeaways from seeing it for a second
time last week.
Speaker 4 (45:37):
I think Eric Peterson has done a terrific job. They've
won eighteen nineteen games. A little bit and you know,
they've had a terrific year, a little bit of a
rebound year after you know, maybe some.
Speaker 3 (45:45):
Struggles last year, and Eric and his staff have just
been very convicted and into your point, just the unique style.
You know, they're pressing, they're picking you up, they are
in your grill, made or miss ninety four feet for
forty minutes, and it's certainly can be an exhausting game
and style of play against. And you see that a
lot where they're you know, the game at un D
(46:06):
in particular, was a kind of a microcosm. I think
they're basketball where you know, they were down, they were
down double digits, and they looked like they were you know,
and all of a sudden, they just wear you out
and they wear you down, and all of a sudden
against North Dakota they were up eight, and that's just
how they play.
Speaker 4 (46:21):
It's always a game.
Speaker 3 (46:22):
I think the game at Omah for USD was another
little bit of an example where they were down nineteen,
you know, quickly a few possessions later, it seems like
it's just a couple of possession game.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
I think Chase.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
Sporte is as talented a young man in our league
as we have right now. What he might lack at
times in some maybe perimeter shooting or something like that,
he is an elite competitor.
Speaker 4 (46:43):
He's a dog. You know, when I talk about those
guys that want to go in the back alley with
like Chase Sparte is one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
You know, he's he's an elite defender on the basketball.
He's he's a fierce competitor to get downhill and the
free throw line. I think you're seeing some guys like
Caleb Stewart and Chase Bullock are healthy. The Bronze Brothers
can you know, really really fill it up. They've done
some things based on some necessity with some of their
backup big guys being hurt.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
They're playing some small ball, which presents some unique challenges.
Speaker 3 (47:11):
It's just a really good outfit and they close the
season on a really high mark and their senior Day
against North Dakota on Saturday afternoon, and you know, we
were fortunate enough to pull out a victory on Wednesday
nights and we know we're gonna have our hands full
come Friday night.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
Well, you talk about a player like Chase Forte coach
kind of reminds me a little bit of Achins for Denver,
right where they're really gonna get downhill, get to the basket.
Speaker 5 (47:35):
How do you get in front of that and take
it away?
Speaker 4 (47:38):
Yeah, I think it's multiple things.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
One, I don't know if you just do it for
forty minutes, right, you have to make sure and limit
it those things I think, And I don't know the numbers.
I apologize, but you know when we played him the
first time, he was like fourth in the country and
free throw shooting, and I know, he's obviously still up there,
so you know, part of it is is keeping him
off the foul line and letting him find the rhythm there.
But like anything that we do, we talk about and
(48:00):
tough we talk about being together. So the toughness piece
is really guarding. We talk about with your chin and
your chest, not with your hands.
Speaker 4 (48:06):
That's how you get files the second pieces together.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
Like one guy for North Kota State is not going
to consistently stop Chase Forte.
Speaker 4 (48:13):
You know, we've got to be intact. We've got to
be in our principles over and over as a group,
all five guys locked in to stop a guy like that.
Speaker 5 (48:22):
We were talking about this with Dexter earlier today.
Speaker 2 (48:26):
When you look back, yes, they press, but when you
break that timeline might look up and you might have
three on two and some numbers.
Speaker 5 (48:33):
What did you see on film from that?
Speaker 3 (48:35):
Yeah, I think that's what you got to do, is
you got to pick and choose your poison a little
bit where You're right, we got a bunch of just
easy lay ins from those situations.
Speaker 4 (48:43):
And at the same sense, we can't.
Speaker 3 (48:45):
You know, part of sometimes a press isn't necessarily turning
it over it's rushing you into a quick, ugly shot,
and so if it's a great shot, we need to
continue to make sure we stay on the attack. And
I think sometimes the best I don't think, I know,
sometimes the best way to attack pressure to attack a presses,
to stay aggressive. And I thought our guys really had
a good mindset. But also then we had some terrific
(49:06):
in particular at at USD and Vermilion when we played
in the first time, we were very successful late shot clock,
and so you know, we divide the shot clock into thirds,
those eight first eight seconds, you know, searching for those
space opportunities, something at the rim, a catch and shoot.
Speaker 4 (49:22):
Opportunity, that middle what is that that's great?
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Are we touching multiple sides of the floor, playing inside
out and then really and then attacking the basket trying
to get to the front of the rim late and
our guys against South Dakota fortunately been able to kind
of dissect that shot clock, time and space a little bit,
and it's been certainly good for us.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
Gotta take another time out here, coach, and we'll keep
the conversation rolling up to the top of the hour.
As we start to wind down here on the men's
side of our biys and basketball coaches show going to
take a time out and appreciate everybody being here, so

Speaker 4 (56:15):
Yeah, that is it's absolutely crazy, and we talked so
much Sam about it. It's not a journey. It's a
pilgrimage and you're doing something. When you're doing something, that's
who you're doing it with.
Speaker 3 (56:24):
And there's just a lot of special people in particular
when this show and you know, certainly the pivot that
we made from you know, the great studios that you
guys have, but you know, the people of the holiday
and to to welcome us and embrace us and feed
us and you know, let us drink with them. And
they've done a great job. Be remissed. You know Bizen, Sports, Properties,
lear Field, Josh Hartman's work, but in particular Ge Glennis,
(56:46):
she's been here all the time in just a lovely
face and a great energy and spirit to Glennis. We
have our faithful. They've been great. They come and I
do feel like the faithful is growing, you know, every time.
And like I said, for a lot of reasons, this
pivot has been great, but last it's certainly not Lee
sam As you too. I mean, you're you're fortunate to
be with us and you make a tremendous impact. You
(57:08):
have no idea the people that you touch, maybe not literally,
but you know, figuratively with with your voice and for
you to be a part of it for all the
things that that Nancy and Andy and all of that
you guys do for for tugging Dexter along.
Speaker 4 (57:22):
We know what a pain in that. You know what
that is for those situations. But Bison sixty six, Bison.
Speaker 3 (57:29):
Sixteen sixty is a very unique deal for a for
a school like us to have our own radio station,
and and for you to put into pride the passion
that you have behind it. Sam, You know, it's a
pleasure for us to see that, and very appreciative of
everything you've been doing for us.

a pretty good darn good version of ourselves down it's
two falls well.
