Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hollered Fine gay Lay Chevrolet Chat. Welcome to the Bison
Basketball Show with head coach David Richmond on the Pioneer
Seeds Bison Sports Network from lear Field. Now for the
latest on NDSU men's basketball fears the Voice of the
Bison Sam Niederman.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Alrighty, everybody, welcome on it. It is our very first
Bison Basketball Coaches Show of the year. We are at
the Holiday Inn, the Friendly Confines that we know and
love here at Fargo for all of our Bison Coaches Show,
and it's great to have everybody here tonight for our
first one of the year preseason preview of both Bison

(00:44):
men's and women's basketball. For the next hour and a half,
we've got to give another round of applausea everybody coming
on out here on a Monday night. Thanks again for
coming on out, Bison Nation, appreciate you guys. Head coach
Dave Richmond here with us coach great say it.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
There's probably like six or seven hundred people here today. Yeah,
what's behind the camera. They don't know they have. They
can only hear.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
They can only hear, and even on Facebook on our
DSU Athletics Facebook page.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
So absolutely, but we it's great.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
It's great to be back setting the tone here, not
only for a Monday, but for the season. This is
actually tone setting day right here.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
It is. I loved your tweet this morning setting the
tone up.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
I figured you would get that. I don't know if
anybody else did.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
It is kind of our motto here Coach Richmond and
I on our radio show here, it's we're tone setters,
and that's what we're going to be doing here the
rest of the season. So good to see you, my friend.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
It's great to be seen. It's great to be here.
It's crazy.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Uh, almost a week from tonight or a week from
right now, a week and a couple hours, we'll be
playing our first official game, so craziness. We just had
practice number twenty three. I'm sprinting in as you can tell,
I'm in practice practice mode here. Probably a little bit
too amped up and you know, had on and all
the things, but excited, really excited to get going. I've

(02:01):
I've spoken on many platforms, and a really really fun group.
Just a great group to be around, big, strong, physical,
athletic group that's got tremendous character. We got long ways
to go, but this group's got a chance to do something
remarkably special.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yeah, I think it's been interesting. We've had two exhibition
games already open Door, which has been new to this year,
so it feels like we've been playing away. But now
for real. The regular season tips off a week from tonight,
like you said, coach, and it is here. We are
at the end of October. It's time for college basketball.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Yeah, I mean, and those exhibitions have been great. I mean,
they're much needed. I think there's an excitement anytime you
start something like the start of practice was exciting, but
then there becomes a little bit of the monotony of it,
and then we need to be able to embrace the monotony.
But we also know, you know that there is that
light on the end of the tunnel. To play somebody
different and two Thursdays ago, to be you know, on

(02:52):
a big ten court against the golfers, you know, and
around a bunch of alumni and supporters and just Bison
in general, was great opportunity for get for us to
get under the lights with a new group. We rolled
through a bunch of guys and that one played twelve
guys a little different than we would naturally in a game,
but that's okay, that's what we needed to do. And

(03:13):
I thought we competed pretty good sam for the better
part of thirty minutes, and you know, towards the end,
their length and physicality got to us a little bit
and they made some shots to gap it. But then
tremendously pleased with the way we responded the other night.
I knew it would be sloppy to start. I mentioned
that and some other platforms too, where we just came
out and had some russ first time for a lot

(03:33):
of these guys being under the lights at home, and
our guys just settled in terrifically. We got a bunch
of stops, went on a fourteen old run, and I
just fed over and carried over into who we were
in the second half. And I think the other thing
that I've said too maybe behind the scenes, and I
need to speak to it, you know a little bit more.
Not only is this a fun group, there's very little drama.
You know, it's a very business like, mature group. And

(03:56):
I think that's a credit to the five guys that
stayed around and to continue to establish the culture that
is buys and basketball. But just obviously then the maturity
of some of the upperclassmen that have come in as well.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah, it's been pretty cool to see you both on
and off the court. We can get into some more
of the off the court service of the community that
we've seen from our Bison here leading up to the
season and throughout. So gonna be a great night. We're
gonna be here every Monday throughout the season, coach. We'll
be here for a good chunk of the non conference season,
which will be great. More dates coming up in November.

(04:28):
Obviously next Monday we tip off the season at Oregon State,
but then throughout November and then into December as well,
before we come back every single Monday for sure throughout
SUBIT League play. So we'd love to have everybody continue
to come on out and support. We appreciate everybody who's
come out here. Tonight, we're live six to seven thirty.
We've got the Coaches Show special. It's the best deal

(04:49):
in town. The trick is to get here early and
get here often. Eight bucks for a burger being price.
It's the best deal.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
With all these people, seven to eight hundred people here,
it's gonna be we'll have to squeeze them in, but
I think they're gonna be able to get in.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
Uh. You know what else.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
I was just thinking, Andy, better be ready. Uh with
Jory coming on during the Chiefs game. Uh, huh do
you have the cough button? There's there's a few four
letter superlatives that might be coming out of coach Collins
his mouth, So be ready, Andy.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, I think the cough button will be ready. Our
producer Ean logged back in the studio. He's got a
he's got a good practice.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
The other day.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, how about that. He's getting the scope on this.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
I didn't get an email the copious noted report of
how practice was and that's okay, you played your strings.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
In Yeah, well, uh we'll have He and Uh covered
the team on Bison sixty to sixty all year. He
does our Bison shoot Round show, which is right before
Dexter and I come on a pregame. It's terrific that
the Byson overtype show. He puts a ton into it
so we can't wait.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
And that that's just the Bison basketball, Bison sixteen sixty,
Buyson Athletics in North Dakota State. There's so much of
the you know is spoken to what's seen in the
light right when the games are when the games are on,
the games are live. But there's so many people behind
the scenes that make it go and and obviously Ian
does a tremendous shout for you guys and ultimately.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Us as well, no doubt now shout out to Ian
Beck in our studio. We appreciate it. If you want
to hit us up tonight, we welcome your text and
call seven zero one four seven six sixteen sixty. That
is the number to dial in if you have a
question for coach Richmond. We're also live on Facebook. As
I mentioned, he can drop us a comment on the
NBSU Athletics Facebook page. We're gonna have a couple of

(06:28):
good player guests on tonight here.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Coach tremendous right out the gates, Andy Stefanowitz says, you know,
could not be prouder of a young man for the
way he stayed the course and was I thought he
was magnificent down the stretch for a freshman to come
in and do what he did. And Travion Carson, you know,
I touched on some some social platforms, just going through
some family stuff, whereas his mother just had a stroke

(06:49):
earlier last week and so I want to encourage our
community to do some things to get out and you know,
support that family with a go go funding. But also
Tradon Carson, I'm not going to hide behind it. And
a young man that is got a chance and just
his trajectory to be a special player. One of the
better two way players I'm gonna challenge him with is

(07:10):
the one of the better two way players that we've
ever coached at North Dakota State.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
So two great guys to get it started.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
No doubt. And if you want to support Trevion and
his family, check out the GoFundMe. Coach Richmond's twitter shared
it earlier today and also on our Bison Men's basketball
apprecial platform.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Definitely check it out there by the nation. So appreciate
everybody coming on out. We're just getting underway with coach.
We're gonna take our first break. We gonna learn so
much more about this squad as we get ready to
tip off the season. It's a Bison Basketball Coaches Show.
This is the Pioneer Seede Bides and Sports Network from
weir Field.

By now you know that Bison sixteen sixty is your

the First Western Bank Broadcast Center, Killer Stancy.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
It looks to us like fire responsing on the eccode touchdown.

Speaker 10 (09:27):
They got right back out to Coonan top of the key,
wide open for a three headset.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
You met you, hey, reshoon It it all comes to
you live from the First Western Bank Broadcast Center. First
Western Bank and Bison sixteen sixty. You can bank on us.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
All right, everybody, Welcome back. Bison Basketball Coaches Show, first
one of two thousand and twenty five. I'm live here
at the Holiday Inn in Fargo. Appreciate everybody coming on out.
Sam Niederman, coach Dave Richmond, will have Andy Stefanowitz and
Trey bon Carson join us here at about six thirty.
I want to thank one of our sponsors for the

(10:13):
show tonight, First Western Bank. First Western combines modern banking
conveniences with the personal service of a team you can trust.
It's how they've served our local communities for over sixty
years and it's why they're proud to support NDSU First
Western Bank. I really like this hat that you've got
to coach, the rope hat. That's a good vintage look

(10:34):
right there.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
I know.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Bj BJ came through big time for me. Yeah, we
heeded some gear. We went out what we didn't go
out with the football team, but we went to Nashville
and there just happened to be a football game out
there too, I believe it or not.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Nashville is what a crazy concept. I call it Vegas
for adults.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
But yeah, we got loaded up with some gear. VJ
hooked us up. And I do like the vintage hat
a little bit. I'm a I'm a volleyball dad, so
usually I try to go straight bill.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Uh huh.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
This one doesn't wrap that way with the hat or
the rope on the hat. I kind of like it.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's a neat touch right there.
Before we dig into the club. You mentioned going to Nashville.
We had the alumni event with the Gophers. Been kind
of a busy lead up to the season here. You've
been out and about.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Yeah, and it's it's really busy, probably busier than ever,
but awesome, right and enjoying every minute of it. I
need to give a shout out to you know, my
daughter Brinley's volleyball team, and you know they're doing well.
And that group of parents right there is too much fun.
They get me in trouble there, But then again, being
around the group of guys is a bunch of fun.

(11:41):
And then just part of the new the new day
and age that is college basketball and in particular college
athletics in general. There's just different things on my plate
and and and those things are are fun. They keep
it busy, and but it's all part of it, getting
out and meeting people, engaging with people, getting them to

(12:01):
continue to support. Like this is why it's so great
to see you know, this, this, these these fans here
today and it's it's just.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
All part of it.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
And my wife and I and Stephanie, we really enjoy
these things. You know, there's this is a community that
has been so good to us personally professionally, and for
for us to get ourselves out, for us to get
our team out about just just a tremendous opportunity that
we want to take advantage of.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, it's definitely changed a lot over the landscape. This
is year twelve now and a lot of different responsibilities.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
Yeah, a lot of different responsibilities. But that's okay.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
I think that's part of not that by any means
we had it all figured out, that we had it
all licked, but just the new it's.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
Different, but different isn't bad. You have to change, you have.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
To embrace, you have to adapt a little bit, and
and some of those things have been healthy for me.
It's getting me outside of my comfort zone. And like
I challenge the guys, the only way you're going to
get better is to get outside of your comfort zone.
And I really feel that if I'm going to preach that,
then I need to walk that as well. And you know,
different different things, but that's okay. It's all uncomfort, and

(13:05):
uncomfort means we're growing.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
No doubt about it. Well, I want to look into
a team coach. I know everybody here is really curious.
We're all getting to know a blend of our five
attorneyes like you mentioned, and then the nine newcomers that
we have. We've gotten two exhibition looks. Give me one
thing that's really stood out to you as far as
impressing in the first two exhibitions, and then one thing
maybe you're looking to emphasize and improve on before we

(13:28):
tip off the right state.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
I think the biggest thing is just the activity, the physicality. Defensively,
we're able to get our hands on a few more balls.
We're a little bit more physical at the point of attack.
And I think the other thing is is we're not
going to play twelve guys come Monday. But the fact
that we were even able to have twelve guys step
on the floor a couple thursdays ago against the golfers

(13:52):
and and you know, not fall flat on their face,
to show, well, what do we got to get better at?

Speaker 4 (13:58):
You know me everything.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
I think our offense is such a rhythm and timing
and a continuity thing. You know, we've got to get
a lot better there. Defensively, I was not happy at
all the way we rebounded against Minnesota. I thought we
did a little bit better there. And then it's just
about really understanding that it's sometimes in a way you
got different guys coming in that have habits. You've got

(14:20):
guys that were here last year when we did things
a different way that have those habits, old habits. It's
a lot of just breaking habits and then meshing that
into what we want to be about this year, and
I think that's the exciting, challenging piece. I think we
have a very good team right now. I don't think
we're close to scratching the surface of who we can be.
And that's good, that's encouraging. If we were a finished

(14:40):
product here on October twenty seventh, that wouldn't be any fun.
But for us to keep searching and keep getting better.
You know, I challenged the guys, you know we I'm
sure they were feeling pretty good about themselves. Then I
gave them Friday, Saturday, Sunday off, but I've got them
up early in the morning just to make them uncomfortable,
to make sure that we knew that there had to
be a better I was out there and and like

(15:02):
I would expect, they they responded tremendously.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
You know, if you're watching Thursday night's game against Morehead,
the main thing that stuck out to me was deflections
tips nineteen points off of turnovers. I'm sure if you
were at the shack too, you saw, all right, here's
some length and here's here's some different rakles defensively.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Excuse me, Yeah, And I think it's a it's a
byproduct of two things. One schematically, we've changed some things,
you know, and this is my very small basketball minded
you know, be it a bit that the game of
basketball has suffered a little bit lately, the off the
ball movement, the screens, those things a little bit. But

(15:44):
the individual basketball player, Sam, I feel is as good
as it's ever been, like being able to just go
make a player get a bucket. And so our defense
had been in the past just built to keep you
from making as you know, wanted to force you into
a bad shot, and we didn't want to make a mistake,
but we never really took anything away from you. And
you know, that worked for a number of years. And
I think because of the player has gotten better, the

(16:06):
individual player, we have to be a little bit more aggressive,
and so you're seeing us be a little bit more
aggressive with our ball pressure, our ball screen coverage, some
of those things. We're a little bit more chaotic and
it's almost an organized, controlled chaos. And because of that,
I really feel that our defense can really lead into
who we are offensively. And you started to see some

(16:28):
of those things where I believe we got nineteen points
in transition, you know, and then The other part of
that too, is just a more physical I was scored
one hundred and one points, which is terrific, but fifty
six of those points I believe came in the paint,
which was really encouraging number to see.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, kind of two different ways to go about it.
Because we saw triple dig just last year, well, a
lot of that was coming from beyond the three point arc.
Now you're talking about a different way to produce offense.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yeah, and the results hopefully will be, you know, the
same and better towards the end of the season, where
we had a terrific year winning twenty one games last year,
but you know, for myriad reasons, didn't finish the way
we wanted to. We would love to win twenty plus games.
But I do think it's going to look a little
a little different. But that's okay. It's it will take
the points on the board for us, and hopefully.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
What we need to do a better job.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
Obviously we were a lead offensively last year and very
very efficient. We need to do a better job of
finishing possessions on both ends of the floor. I think
there's some opportunities for this group to go get some
offensive rebounds create some extra opportunities for us. But then defensively,
like if you want to be great defensively, you got
to finish with the rebound. And like I said, that
was what was disappointing against Minnesota a little bit.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Well, one of the key players on the glass against
Morehead was Noah Noah Federson and he finishes out with
a double double nineteen and ten in the game. And
our fans have seen him now for a couple of
years in a Bison uniform and you've seen the flashes,
and you saw that again on Thursday night. It looks
like he added a dimension to his game that you're
I know you're hoping for.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
See Listen, nobody loves NOA. Federson more than I do.
Terrific young man. And you know he's a brilliant student
and he works so hard. But it's also no secret
that no one's been harder on him as a basketball
player than Dave Richmond has. And that's because I see
so much upside and potential and I see to your point,
I see flashes, but but no one can't be a

(18:18):
flash for us.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
He's got to be a more of a consistent cog.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
And again, I don't hide behind much. I wasn't very
pleased with how he and Trayson played against Minnesota. We
need some production from that five spot, and Noah and Tracon,
you know, and some other guys got challenged, you know,
between Thursday to Thursday, and I could but at the
same sets, I could not be more proud of how
Noah responded to go out and get nineteen and ten,

(18:41):
To do that in less than twenty four minutes. I
believe that's a terrific benchmark. But now again, it needs
to be a constant, it needs to be a staple.
Noah's mentality needs to be ready to go night in
and night out. And does he get nineteen and ten
every night? I don't know.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
Does he need to shoot for that? Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (18:59):
But if we can get you know, you know right
around that, you know, sixteen to twenty and ten eleven
rebounds from those two combined, you know, that's a pretty
good mark for us.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
How dangerous can he be when he's getting downhill, full
steam ahead, putting the ball on the deck.

Speaker 4 (19:14):
Yeah, he's gonna be really dangerous.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
And I think what you're going to start to see, hopefully,
and this is what I anticipate, and this is obviously
what I'm hoping putting my hands together. You saw that
version of him today in practice where he got to
catch on the left wing, ripped and went in there
and just physical, violent to the rim and really encouraging
for him to kind of see that confidence build.

Speaker 4 (19:34):
I experienced this a lot.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
I see a version of these young men that maybe
they don't even see for themselves, and it takes a
couple click points for them for them to really realize, oh,
I'm pretty damn good.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
I can do these things.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
Like Sam Griesel was one of those guys, and but
for him to see see some of the success, you know,
from a production and an overall team winning standpoint that
he had Thursday, and now to build that. Now we
need to make that we're consistent, you know, and stay
away from your thing, you know, a flash and he
said that light needs to be beaming all the time.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
I like that. Keep the light even. That's what we're
looking for out on the floor. From everybody this year,
the Bison getting set for the season opener at Oregon State.
By the way, for everybody here in the crowd, you've
got a chance to win tickets once we're back home
in the shack for both our Bison men's and women's teams.
If you come on up, put your name in number
in the prize box and we'll have a chance to

(20:27):
draw for your ticket. We do.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
I think we come on out. We can squeeze a
couple more in there. We got our first one. There
we go, there, we go.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
There it is. That's all you need. We just need
somebody to go right here, right there, I like Switzerland
there on the on the sweatshirt. That's good. Yeah, get
your name in there. Guys, we got here. We are.
It only takes one. That's it. The Dominos goot following
light the match. Appreciated, guys, appreciate it. Okay, we're gonna

All right, everybody, welcome back on in. It is the
Bison Basketball Coaches show here at the holiday and in Fargo.
Appreciate everybody joining us. Samnederman coach Dave Richmond here with you.
We want to thank one of our sponsors for the program,
North Dakota Beef Strength and Power to find NDSU Athletics.
So the Bison are powered by beef. North Dakota's beef

(24:30):
producers are proud to provide real fuel for real athletes.
We are here every Monday night, six o'clock for our
men's show seven o'clock coming up, Joy Collins, Andy Rickoff,
we'll be ready for you there as well, and we'll
have our women's show coach. It'll be great to have
Jory in here. As you mentioned, Monday night football with
the Chiefs coming up, So it's gonna be a dual,

(24:53):
dual entertainment here for Jory.

Speaker 3 (24:55):
Obviously, especially in the off season. Jory and I spent
a ton of time together and doing some things, and
it was it was also really cool, you know, just
being down at the Summer League media day and Sioux
Falls with you know him and a couple of his ladies,
and I know they're all very excited rightfully so so
Jory John is just an absolutely tremendous job getting women's
basketball back to where it belongs, and.

Speaker 4 (25:16):
He does it the right way.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
He coaches those girls hard, loves them up, and I'm
happy for their success. And I know they're you know,
excited for some big things too. It sounds like they
had a terrific battle the other day against Creighton Big
East Schools, so plenty of things I'm sure that they're
excited to build off of.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Yeah, nice scrimmage over the weekend against the Blue Jays.
Andy and Joy are going to break that one down
coming up at seven again. If you have a question
for Coach Richmond, let us know seven zor A one four, seven, six,
sixty to sixty. Also for watching live on Facebook, drop
us a comment on the NDSU page. First one of
the year, coach comes in from Ron. We appreciate it.
Ron always had the questions for us on our basketball shows.

(25:55):
He says, question for Coach Richmond, are there any Buyson
player that have far exceeded expectations with their development so
far the preseason?

Speaker 4 (26:05):
Great question, Ron, I wouldn't say.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
I wouldn't say so. No, I don't know if anybody's
far exceeded one way or the other. I think it's
a it's a group that a lot of it, Ron
is because we we probably maybe didn't have many expectations.
And you know, the portal recruiting happened so fast, and
spring spring recruiting happened so fast. I would tell you, you know,
the young man that's going to be on here in

(26:28):
a little bit, Trevion Carson is a really really good player.
And and I don't hide behind that because he knows
that he wants it, and you know his talent, his athleticism,
you know, his drive, those things.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
He's got a chance to be. Uh. Tay Smith is
a guy.

Speaker 3 (26:44):
Maybe he's caught our eye a little bit more than
we anticipated just the way. You know, he's got a
maturity about him, but he can just really really fill
it up. But I think ron to that that point,
I think this is a little bit of this group's
makeup right now. Is this what our makeup's going to
be in January? I don't know, but you know last
year it was some pretty consistent cogs of of Jackson

(27:04):
money and maybe Jakari White doing a bulk of the scoring.
Where I also can see again early on there's gonna
be different guys on different nights that are that that
are going to step up, and that's okay. You know,
our process might look a little bit different getting to
the results that we expect.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
Travion coming in from the junior college ranks, he was
over at d MAC des Moines Area Community College, Des Moines,
Iowa Native and his first year with the Bison. Can
you give us a little background coach into how you
guys found Trevion and brought him in.

Speaker 3 (27:35):
Well, the first thing about Travion is he's a winner.
You know, he won two state championships in high school.
He took the MAC to the national tournament back to
back years, and so that's the that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 4 (27:45):
You want to surround yourself with winning.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
Winning is a skill, right, you have to You have
to learn to win or you've been around winning. And
so then that just parlays into the next thing. And
that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 4 (27:56):
I think.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
The part that we've had to almost you know, kick
Travion in the butt a little bit, excuse me, is
just you know, his impact for winning at North DaCosta
State will be asserting himself being being very aggressive. And
I thought you saw that in particular at Minnesota, those
rip catches and him being aggressive.

Speaker 4 (28:13):
That's who he needs to be. And Josh Jones saw
him early.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
He saw him early when he was healthy, and it
was just very pleased with the way he impacted the
totality of the game. When I saw him, you know,
I saw him with a banged up ankle a little bit,
so I didn't maybe see this version. And that's probably
why to Ron's point, maybe some of the expectations early
on had been and exceeded a little bit because he

(28:37):
moves better. He's a better athlete than I anticipated as well,
and so I'm just thrilled he's a part of our program.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
You know. Is interesting. Coach, he said in the post
game after Morehead that you wanted TC to not let
his shot affect him at both ends of the floor
and really just his entire game. He can you take
us through what that looks like mentally when you say that.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
First, well, I laughed because that's not exactly how I
worded it.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
At have toime.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
And halftime conversations are very emotional at times, although just put.

Speaker 4 (29:05):
It lightly like that.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
And if you think about it, okay, I think he
missed two threes, and in the grand scheme of things,
those two threes, let's just say on the big scale,
those took five seconds, So that means there was other
nineteen minutes and fifty five seconds of that first half
that he had a choice to impact one way or
the other. And I thought he was dragging his head,

(29:29):
you know, after missing those shots. And I think that's
a little bit selfish, it's a little bit short sighted.
And I let him know that at halftime, and he
stared directly through me, right, And I'm sure he's thinking,
you know what, I'm really mad at you.

Speaker 4 (29:42):
But he knew that I was right, and he knew
he could impact the way.

Speaker 3 (29:44):
And you saw how we came out those first four
or five minutes of that second half. I also told
the group afterwards, Trayvon, you were directly responsible for that.
Your energy, your effort, your ball pressure changed the complexity
of that game in the second half. And you know
that's say mature young man to be able to respond
the way he did, Like, yeah, did he want to

(30:04):
make those shots? Absolutely did. We wanted to make those shots, certainly.
But you know, our life is hard. Basketball is hard,
and you won't be defined in those moments of adversity
unless you let let it define you. And you know,
to TEC's credit, man, he just responded great, and I
think that shows his maturity.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
Always firing in the halftime locker room.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
In a while, Yeah you gotta go. You gotta light
the spark once in a while.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Yeah, I gotta light the fire a little bit. I
love it. Also wanted to ask you about Andy Stefano
with tool I have here coming up in just a moment,
he had seven assists. It gets morehead just at this
point it's hard to say, believe we're saying it after
just a year and change, but it's like vintage Andy.
It's what we come to expect.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
Yeah, And to be honest with you, you know the
stats guy that I'm not, I didn't realize Andy had seven.
But there's just I think for me as a head coach, right,
you're the guy standing up there, and you're the guy
that puts the guys on the floor, and that's your product.
There just becomes a real Again. I don't like the
word comfort because that's not a great place to be,
but there's a real security when Andy Stefanowitz is out there.

(31:04):
The ball moves, the ball pops, everybody is involved in
the offense. And you know, there's not too many throwback
point guards anymore. You feel like they're all like scoring
guards a little bit. Where Andy is is still Andy
is looking to set you up, which makes it really fun,
you know, to play with. And you see that when
Andy is on the floor. And again I've said this,

(31:24):
you know, I think to you and some and we
talked maybe at media day where we have two very
good point guards, and shame on me if we don't
find ways to get both those two young men on
the floor with Andy and Demory.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
No doubt. Ladies and gentlemen, look who just came in.
Let's give a big more welcome around of applause. Travion Carson,
Andy were with us.

Speaker 4 (31:43):
We might get Trevion to smile. He is mister chill.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
If you ask him how he's chilling, He's always chilling,
which is a great quality.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
By the way, it is I think I saw with
crack right there. That's great. Great to have you guys in.
We'll get Andy and TC on here at just a moment.
We'll take a break to one more segment with Coach,
and then we'll wrap a and get our players back
on here. Appreciate everybody being here at the HOTA m

This one's a special one here. Uh. It's under a nominity.
It's a it's an anonymous you can for a second,
you can say who is your favorite child? From Brintley Richmond.

(35:16):
That's that's where it comes in.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
Well right now, it's not brittley for for you know,
chatting this. I'll tell you who my favorite child is.
And I'm gonna get in big trouble. But it's my
wife because I think she's you know, she can the
way she spends my money and the amount of cardboard
boxes that come up to my front porch. There's my
answer right there. Like some she must be a child

(35:39):
to to be able.

Speaker 4 (35:40):
To just order like that online.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
Yeah, there it is. Shout out to the Richmond family
right out to the Richmond ladies at home, no doubt,
no doubt. Love the text there from Brintley. We'll keep
them coming again, last chance to get any questions for
coach Richmond. Also on Facebook, Shout out to Jerry on
Facebook with the comment and Tom on Facebook sains my
dad went to eddsu go Bison. Thanks for listening there.

(36:04):
Thanks to Tom. We appreciate that. Uh we got Oregon
State coming up a week from now. We're sitting there
on the show Beaver's Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
You know, I'll be honest with you, don't know anything
about him. They've they're being really secretive to with some
of their exhibition and scrimmages, and you know, if that's
their deal, that's their deal. You know our ours have
been pretty public to about it. But again, no matter what, like.

Speaker 4 (36:28):
Our focuses is.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
Is ninety five percent Bison anyways, and we've got a
lot of things to improve on. But what a great
opportunity for us to go out there and you know,
play a pack twelve school and you know, challenge himself.
I got a lot of respect for coach Tinkle. He
did a tremendous job at Montana. He just made a
great run with the Beavers a couple of years ago.
So you know, excited for us just to play against

(36:51):
a different opponent, for them to throw some different things
at us, to see how we're going to respond to
some adversity, because I can promise you this, you know,
traveling out west for a couple of games, so there's
gonna be plenty of a diversity, and what a way
for us to grow as a group.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
This is a time where it's up down and around
next next two months until I'll passo coaches Wild.

Speaker 3 (37:09):
Wild, And I try to explain that to some of
our new guys, TC being one of them, and you know,
in particular like our freshman Riley and Dom and Riley,
like they have no clue, you know, trying to remember
what hotel room you're in and all the things. And
but I stressed them today like the little things like
Oregon State or UC Davis. You know that they won't
care if someone sick or anything like that. But when

(37:31):
you travel in planes and you sleep in different beds,
it's still important to find your rhythm and your routine
and your habits, and you know, we'll try to do
that as best as we can as a staff. But
these guys are this is a mature group too, and
very businesslike approach to those things.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
So yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (37:45):
We're about to get into it and we're about to
experience some bumps, right, And but that's okay. There's there's
gonna be plenty of bumps in the road. There's gonna
be plenty of failures. But we have a choice. And
when we fail, can we let that Are we going
to let that define us which is bad? Or are
we going to let us drive us and motivate us
for better? And that that's the encouraging piece of this

(38:05):
This group has has responded to adversity already in the
short term. This group has a maturity and business like
approach to them that I'm excited to go to battle.

Speaker 2 (38:13):
With a week from now or next week, we're on
the road and then we'll be back at home. And
I know you're looking for a packed shock, a packed
shield center. We've got the home opener on Tuesday, November
the eleventh against cal State Northridge. Big game Monday the
seventeenth to get Southern Illinois. We've got a lot of
folks here, people listening back home.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
Let's go like I am, I'm Adam, and I'm banging
the table here. And we've had some great conversations behind
the scenes with you know, our administration has been fully
supportive of some things. Marketing, you know, it has been great.
Biden Sports Properties is here, they're involved in it. But
there's a group of people, in particular our students at
INDYSU that we need to galvanize. And I firmly believe

(38:54):
along with the beautiful facility, we have the great product
that reflects you know that the Fargo, Moorhead, f red
River Valley area.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
Along with those two things.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
A student section, it just gets wild and crazy and
it's a flip and party.

Speaker 4 (39:08):
We need to pack the shack.

Speaker 3 (39:10):
And not only do we pack it, we need to
we need to make it just electric in there and
engage environment. And I think I think we're on the
verge of doing some things and taking those steps, but
we're not there. We need to be better in those
areas and hopefully from a program standpoint myself, our guys
are doing those things to engage but excited and I
appreciate you bringing that up because we have some very

(39:31):
important road games coming up that are great opportunities for
us to get better. But real shortly after that, we
have some home opportunities and and and to be honest
with you, I'm a little disappointed, flat out pissed that,
you know, some of our games last year at.

Speaker 4 (39:43):
Home, we didn't we didn't show well.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
We need to do our part to to to engage
that group a little bit better as well. And but
but I'm excited for what can be, what can come
in particularly, really want to embrace and challenge and encourage
our students to get behind this because I think they can.
They can really be a spark to this party.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yeah, set it early and often. Here we go. This
is gonna be a fun, fun year inside the Shack.
I can't believe that we're a week away from tip off.

Speaker 3 (40:10):
My friend, I want to be Sam Niederman when I
grow up, Like I get to watch football and then
do this, and then I get.

Speaker 4 (40:16):
To go on the bird and coach college basketball.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (40:19):
And then the other thing I want to do is
I want to be a high level college football coach.

Speaker 4 (40:24):
And then I want to get fired.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
Because then you can just got millions and millions and
millions of dollars.

Speaker 2 (40:29):
What a concept, right, I can't believe it. Yeah, I
haven't seen anything like it. But for real, this is
gonna be a fun couple of weeks here for me.
You get nothing but to do football basketball.

Speaker 4 (40:38):
This is awesome, Sam, it's great.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Appreciate you coach, always see you. Yeah, thank you. Let's

of playing the same people over and over every day,
so just looking forward to doing that.

Yeah, it should be a fun trip when we get

you're in your sophomore year, Travion your first year here
with the program. How did you guys get recruited by
Coach Richmond the staff and ultimately come to find that
you wanted to play basketball here at NDSU.

Speaker 23 (45:47):
Yeah, just kind of building the relationship with coach Rischman
early on and taking some visits here and stuff. It
kind of felt like home right away. And also like
the former players is welcoming, welcoming me in stuff like that,
and just kind of felt like a family right away.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
How about you, Travon?

Speaker 24 (46:03):
Coach Jones reached out to me early because I was
at JUCO before this, so early in my season. We
established that connection early, and they just stayed in touch
with me. We built that relationship and it was established,
and I just felt like the most connection with them.
And then when I came out here for my visit,
I just I just felt like it was like a
real connection with the guys. When I got around him,
I didn't have to force nothing, I could just be myself.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
I love it. What did it mean to come out
of junior college, Travion and have the interest that you
had from NDSU? You know, this was kind of the
next phase of your career. Is it pretty cool to realize, Hey,
I'm at the Division one level right now now?

Speaker 4 (46:37):
Yes, it's cool.

Speaker 24 (46:38):
It's really a dream come true because I always wanted
to get here and just from what I had to
go through, like going through junior college and just my
lack of recruitment.

Speaker 4 (46:45):
Just finally getting here was.

Speaker 2 (46:47):
Yeah, yeah, well, we're awesome. We're glad that you're here. Man.
It's gonna be awesome to see a show out here
on the floor. This year, Andy, you had a chance
to play at back in your hometown when we were
back in Minneapolis for the exhibition against Minnesota. How was
that getting to play at William's Arena and in front
of some friends and family.

Speaker 23 (47:07):
Yeah, it was fun. It's always fun to play in
the barn, and a lot of my family and friends
were able to come out and support, so yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (47:12):
A good time.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
Yeah, you guys were flying around last Thursday night against
Moorehead Trayon. I got to ask you about your dunk. Man.
You were able to get hopefully the first of many
one hand or take us through that play.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
Normally I'll jump a little bit higher than that.

Speaker 24 (47:27):
I was a little tired, but you know, I still
had to because if I would have laid the ball up,
I never had heard end of it. I had to
make sure I got up high enough to punch it
in there.

Speaker 2 (47:35):
That's well done, man, everybody wants to get up there.
That was great. What did you think of it? Andy?
You saw there all the play I believe.

Speaker 23 (47:43):
Oh yeah, I thought Noah's gonna go dunk at first,
and I saw TC coming inside. I got hype for
him for sure.

Speaker 2 (47:48):
Yeah, we've got some ups on this group. We've got
some high flyers. You think maybe some alley oops.

Speaker 4 (47:55):
Here this season for sure? For sure?

Speaker 2 (47:56):
Yeah, Mark, I Knowah they could get up there about
that trade, Tom coming So yeah, I like that showtime Biason.
That might have to be the name for us here
this year. I love it. Guys. We'll talk some more
about some of the plays we've seen in the preseason

Stuff You Should Know
Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
