Tonight the journey begins for North Dakota State Bison men's
basketball as the herd venture to the Pacific Northwest to
open up this two thousand and twenty five twenty six season.

(01:09):
It's opening night and it's NDSU at Oregon State. Welcome
to the broadcast booth, everybody, glad to have you along
with us for another season of Bison men's basketball. I'm
Sam Niederman. Should be a fun one tonight as the
Bison get ready to officially tip off this new season.
It's the twenty second season in the Division one era

(01:32):
of North Dakota State men's basketball, and the Bison are
coming off of a twenty one win season a year ago.
It marked the ninth time in Division one history that
the Bison have won twenty or more games in the
fifth time Utterer head coach Dave Richmond. Of course, it
was a terrific year, marked by the terrific three point
shooting for DSU. The Bison earned the nickname the bombs

Away Bison after leading the country shooting thirty nine point
eight percent from beyond the arc. The Bison hit a
school and conference record three hundred and eighty three pointers
and that was a calling card for last year's team,
big time wins at Butler and Santa Clair on the
non conference, which ultimately was highlighted by an eight game
winning streak for the Bison. Going into conference play that

things were a little up and down. Bison finished ten
and six in Summit League with stars Jackson Money and
Jakari White leading the way. Unfortunately, those two would go
down with injury late in the season and leave the
Bison shorthanded for their Summit League tournament, and despite a
terrific effort in Sioux Falls, the Bison fell short and
were eliminated in the first round by South Dakota eighty

five to eighty four. Fast forward to today, Mony and
White graduate and a few others depart, and the Bison
have to come out with a brand new team.

And that's what.

We'll get our first look at here tonight as the
Bison come up to Oregon State and debut a squad
that features five returners in nine new Out of the
nine newcomers, five are transfers. The Bison brought in Marquis
Strickland from Western Michigan Junior College, transfers Trevion Carson and
Max Marley, Sacramento State transfer Emile Scuta, and Division two

transfer Tay Smith. Speaking of the Bison here, they come
back out on the floor once more for the last
couple of minutes of warm ups here in Corvallis.

They're decked out in green new green under armor.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Uniforms that we'll see for the first time in this
regular season under the lights. Five returners from the Bison,
highlighted by Noah Fenerson.

He's back for his third year in the greet and gold.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
A preseason second team All Summit League selection. He averaged
eight points in six rebounds per game, and Dave Richmond
and the Bison coaching staff are very excited for Watson
store for Noah and his junior campaign. They think he's
turned the corner and is ready to be a centerpiece
for this Bison squad. We mentioned the three point shooting
Elebison that was our calling card year probably will be

a little bit different this year as the Bison look
to get back to basics on the defensive side of
the floor. Yes, Andysu is still going to let it
fly courageously from three. However, the strength of this team
could be the length and athleticism that it features on
the perimeter. A lot more hype and a lot more
versatility on the wing from the Bison with some of

the players they brought in and a couple of the
players that are coming into the fold after red shirting
last year. Tomorrow, Wheeler Thomas will be back on the
floor for the first time of the year. He read
shirted last year so to recover fully from a nagging
leg injury. Carson Smith, a very intriguing six foot six
red shirt freshman, will have his first action as a
Bison tonight as well. Look for the Bison to be

a little more aggressive on defense both tonight and this season,
creating some turnovers that could lead to points. It's the
first ever meeting between the Bison and Oregon State. These
two squads have never met, and they square off tonight
to open up the season. Oregon State coming off of
a twenty win season a year ago their first season

(05:07):
and a two years stay in the West Coast Conference.
Of course, the Beavers, formerly of the PAC twelve. PAC twelve,
disbanded a couple of years ago in basketball when all
the realignment happened across college sports. They'll be back in
the Pac twelve next year once they retool it with
reinforcements coming over from the Mountain West, the likes of
Presno State, Boise State, Colorado State, and San Diego State,

But for now they're still in the West Coast Conference.
Last year, they went ten to eight in that league.
Their entire team is pretty much new this season. Their
whole starting lineup from a year ago transferred to either
a Big twelve school or an ACC school with departures,
and the likes of Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Pitt and Syracuse.

The Beavers feature nine newcomers. Like the Bison, they only
have six returners from a year ago, and we'll get
a glimpse at them here tonight under head coach Wayne
Tinkle in his twelfth season at the Helm. Him and
coach Richmond, we're chatting during the pregame earlier, both of
their squads warming up right now here at Guil Coliseum.

We also like to say it's the pilgrimage, right Sam.
It's the journey, but it's who you're with on the pilgrimage,
and so no, we're really excited, to be honest with there,
was just excited yesterday, as crazy as it sounds, to
get on get on the bird and travel out here
with this group of guys. Just a terrific group of
guys that have been a joy to be around off

the court, but also then a competitive nature to them
on the court and a lot of new faces, a
lot of new personalities which is fun and engaging. But
excited to see what we're all about tonight. We've had
two examples, like you talk about, at a big ten
at home versus a non division one and seen some
things that we can build on, see some things definitely
that we need to get better at. And tonight it's

going to be another opportunity for us to compete, to
go out and win a game, but in the grand
scheme of things, continue to grow as a group.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
You're twelve for you, coach, What do you attribute to
the feelings before an opening night like this?

Speaker 10 (10:14):
What does it change at all year to year?

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Is there still the same type of anticipation?

Speaker 9 (10:19):
Oh yeah, definitely, I think the moment that that feeling anticipation, excitement,
goes away is probably the time that I need to
do something else, Sam, And there's a lot of things
going on here.

Speaker 10 (10:30):
And there away from the actual game.

Speaker 9 (10:33):
But to be forty seven years old and as out
of shape as I am and find a little bit
of a platform where you can compete and be around
the spirit and joy and enthusiasm of college athletics. This
is what it's all about, and certainly not about me.
It's about watching our guys going and do that. But
to have some responsibility you know, behind it. Just a

really really unique profession and really excited for these opportunities.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Well, coach, you mentioned this year's squad really excited to
see how they look under the lights in a game
that counts towards the regular season. What's your message to
the group, especially to some of the guys who this
is their first regular season Division one game.

Speaker 9 (11:12):
Yeah, the message is really it's really simple. It should
be really simple, and that school play basketball. You know,
we talk about the practice facility, what you do out
there and being able to take that and change it.

Speaker 11 (11:24):
You know.

Speaker 9 (11:24):
Toughness in our program is defined by doing the right
things no matter the circumstances, and clearly tonight the circumstances
are going to change. You're going to play on the road,
you're going to play against a WCC PAC twelve opponent,
different fans cheering against you. The circumstances are going to
be the same, but that doesn't mean the game is different.
And you've got to be able to go out and

(11:45):
execute the simple things. And again, we use it so
much about blocking, tackling, not getting penalties. You know, we've
got to be able to pass and catch offensively, We've
got to make hits defensively, we've got to be able
to jump to the ball.

Speaker 10 (11:57):
Like again, all boring, monotonous things.

Speaker 9 (11:59):
But you know, we've learned, and we've talked a lot
about it, you know, success and life success and you know,
and is doing the mundane, it's doing it's it's doing
the ordinary things exceptionally well. And when you play an
opponent like this this early in the season, there's a
whole bunch of unknown sam they got a new new personnel,
how does that personnel fit coach tankle schemes and all

(12:22):
that stuff. You know, when does that? You know, we
know hardly anything about Oregon State. You know, they've played
two closed door events pretty much and we know very little,
but that's that's okay. This is about buys and basketball.
This is about the you know, twelve guys that are traveling,
going out there and you know, when their opportunity comes,
if their opportunity comes, play buys in basketball, and that's

what I'm looking forward to.

Speaker 10 (12:44):
Yeah, I was going to.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Say, coach kind of goes back to an opportunity to
reinforce our principles in a game like this, especially so
early on. That's the stuff that's not going to change,
whether it's November third or down in swo Falls for
a subtlelygue tournament, Yeah, I.

Speaker 10 (12:56):
Mean one hundred percent.

Speaker 9 (12:57):
Now we're going to play two teams very schematically, very different,
you know, over this this stretch when we're at Oregon
State tonight and at UC Davis Wednesday night. But what's
not going to change is that the name on the
front of our jersey. You know, the things that we
fundamentally have practiced over and over and now we've got
to be able to go and execute those things when
the circumstances have changed a little bit. And that's the fun,

(13:19):
that's the excitement, that's the the challenge behind college basketball.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
You mentioned Oregon State, brand new starting lineup from a
year ago, lots of international flavor on this team and
a lot of size and height. How do you try
and counter that and deal with it tonight?

Speaker 10 (13:35):
Yeah, I mean, certainly that's something that we've addressed.

Speaker 9 (13:37):
You look at coach Tankle and his staff, They're they're
big there. Their staff is big, and I think that,
you know, it's kind of dictates a little bit how
they play. They live to throw that ball in and
then play it play out, I do think, and kind
of some things that we're picking up on is you know,
a little bit of stereotypical form player. There's some skill
to them this year, and they're they're big in height,

(13:58):
but maybe not maybe as big and stature as they've
been and but we expect them to be really be
able to pass and catch and shoot it and do
those things skill wise. And we've talked to our group
about we have to win at the point of attack.

Speaker 10 (14:11):
We have to be very aggressive with the ball.

Speaker 9 (14:13):
If our ball pressure isn't on point and they're passing
on time, on target.

Speaker 10 (14:19):
It's going to be a long night.

Speaker 9 (14:20):
Yeah, this is a team that sets multiple off ball screens.
A little bit different than the majority of teams where
you see a lot of ball screens where you know
we're going to have to jump to the ball and
then do it again and be physical getting through the
screens and then and then a big thing again.

Speaker 10 (14:33):
A staple of what we're about. We got to be
able to.

Speaker 9 (14:35):
Finish possessions, and we can't use their height as an excuse.
We've talked about advantage rebounding quite a bit, multiple guys
making you know, hits.

Speaker 10 (14:43):
On their guys and and doing those things.

Speaker 9 (14:46):
It's going to certainly help to make some shots, you know, offensively,
but at the end of the day, we got to
pass and catch value the ball, take the right shots,
and hopefully create some more opportunities for ourselves too by
sneaking in some offensive rebound opportunities.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
We've had the two exhibitions kind of night and day
offensively in both of those exhibitions. What would you like
to see building off of last Thursday against Morehead in
this one tonight?

Speaker 9 (15:08):
Yeah, you know, again, I was very pleased with the
way we responded in the second half. I don't think
we thought we missed some great looks.

Speaker 10 (15:14):
They're good shots.

Speaker 9 (15:15):
We need to keep taking those great shots need to
shoot them in.

Speaker 10 (15:17):
I thought we did that in the second half.

Speaker 9 (15:19):
And I think the other big thing that you saw
and we touched on it is, you know, we created
opportunities offensively from our defense. You know, we forced some turnovers,
we were able to get out and run and that's
just a fun, exciting, you know, brand of basketball that
I feel like this group is very very capable of
playing with our size, physicality, athleticism, depth, versatility.

So I'd like to see some more of those things
as well.

you if the Bison could come back to Fargo with
a couple of victories. They're out on the floor warming
up on the left side of the half court, all

Meanwhile, Oregon State warming up on the right side of
the court wearing their white home uniforms with orange and

some keys of the game for tonight's matchup. Starting for
the Bison offfensively, first key will be take care of
the basketball. Limit turnovers. The Bison were really good last

year at limiting turnovers. They only averaged just over ten
per game, which was top sixty in the entire country.

Going up against an Oregon State team that.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Features a ton of size and height, length as well
athletic big men, they'll need to take care of the
basketball tonight Oregon State with eleven players out of its
fifteen on the roster that are six foot six or taller.
And then for the Byson on defense, they'll be challenged
against that athletic and big Oregon State outfit. Can they

find a way to clean up the glass and finish
possession defensive.

Rebounding, that's our second keyt of the game.

We talked about it with coach Richmond in our pregame conversation.
Always one of the principles for Bison defense. Can they
find a way to box out and make first possession
clearouts on defense that was an issue at times last year.
Dave Richmond said he liked the team's shot clock defense.
It was just a matter of being be able to
clean it up and not allow second chance points.

And we'll look for that tonight. Bison and Oregon State
they've never played.

As we mentioned earlier, both teams had two exhibition opportunities
before this regular season opener.

Bison went one and one and theirs.

They lost that Minnesota two weeks ago, and then they
beat Minnesota State.

Moehead last Thursday night, one oh one to sixty nine.

Meanwhile, Oregon State played in two closed door scrimmages. The
Bison's exhibitions were open door. They beat Cow out of
the ACC seventy six to sixty six a couple of
weeks ago on a neutral floor, and then they beat
Western Oregon last week seventy three to forty four. Here
