It is game number two on the young season and
the second and final game of this West Coast wing
for the North Dakota State by as NDSU looks to
Gramma victory and come back hope to Fargo one and
one taking on the UC Davis Aggies.

Welcome courtside everyone, I'm Sam Naderman.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Glad to have you along with us for another night
of Bison basketball.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Game number two on this West Coast swing for the Bison.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
And North Dakota State looking to get its first win
on the season. It was a close one and it
came down to the wire on Monday night against Oregon State,
but the Bison fell sixty seven to sixty five and
DSU led it halftime in the game. They had to
lead very late in the game sixty five to sixty four. However,
Oregon States Josiah Lake the second would convert on a

layup with two point four seconds remaining. The Bison then
trailed by two. They had the ball on an opportunity
to potentially tie or win the game. Controversy as NDSU
trying to baseball pass into the front court to get
the ball potentially catch it at call time out, the
ball went out of.

Bounds off of Bison center Noah F.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Pederson, and the officials ruled that it was off of
UC Davis last, giving NDISU an opportunity, even though they
looked like NDISU might have touched the ball last. They
also granted the Bison a time out even though no
one ever had clear possession of the ball. Nevertheless, the
Bison got a last second shot. They imbounded it to
Andy's deefonal Witz and Andy's three unfortunately came up short.

(02:23):
And the Bison came up on the short side of
their season opener by two points against the Beavers, but
it was a really encouraging night on a lot of
different areas of the floor for North Dakota State. The
Bison with terrific defense. They held the Beavers to under
seventy points and ESU last year gave up seventy four
points per game, the most allowed in a season under

(02:44):
a Dave Richmond coach Bison team, and they had only
given up less than seventy points in a game down
the home stretch to the last year for the turn
of the calendar year just twice against Denver and Kansas
City back in January, so that was a rare occurrence.
Two months of last season, the Bason came out with
a really good defensive effort on Monday night. They won

the glass against the Oregon State despite Oregon State having
a heavy height advantage multiple players at six foot eleven
and above multiple players on their perimeter as well at
six foot six, but the Bison had a thirty six
to thirty three rebounding advantage against the Beavers and they
crashed the offensive class effectively. NDSU with eleven offensive rebounds

compared to Oregon State's five offensive rebounds.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Story the night, though, how did NDSU not get over
the hump?

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, they didn't shoot the ball particularly well. NDSU just
six out of thirty one from three point range on
Monday night at Oregon State, nineteen percent. If NSU would
have just had one one look go in down the stretch,
could have been enough to win the opening night game
against the Beavers. We'll look for the Bison to improve
off of that here against a UC Davis squad that

checks in at one to zero. The Aggies won their
season zo opener on Monday night against Division two Menlo
College ninety six to sixty nine the final score. And
they're coming off a season in which they went fifteen
to seventeen nine and eleven in the Big West. They're
out of the Big West Conference, and in fact, they're
the first of four Big West opponents on the Bison

schedule this season. And as you will play UC Davis tonight,
then they'll go home to Fargo and open up the
home schedule inside the Shields Center against cal State Northridge
on Tuesday, and then they also have December games against
cal State Bakersfield and UC Irvine, so the first of
a few tests against the Big West Conference for the
Bison in this non conference portion of the schedule. This

is the last season for UC Davis in the Big
West before moving against basketball team to the Mountain West
starting next season, so it's a big year for the
Aggies to try and end on a good note to
the conference that they've been in since two thousand and seven.
The Bison and the Aggies have squared off five times
prior to tonight. North Dakota State holds the all time series

edge at four to one. However, in the last and
most recent meeting between these two squads just two years ago,
UC Davis got the better of the Bison they wanted
sixty eight to fifty three. If you remember, that was
in Missoula, Montana, on a neutral floor. It was a
multi team event and the Bison took on UC Davis
in the first matchup of that multi team event.

It was a Tuesday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
There was absolutely nobody in the gym out in Missoula.
You could hear a pint drop, especially when people who
were shooting prey throws. There was attendance of maybe fifty
people officially between NDSU and UC Davis and the Bison
are trying to reverse the result from that game, and
he is who got smothered on the glass. UC Davis
out rebound of the Bison by ten, and they also

gave up eighteen offensive rebounds to the Aggies. The Bison
did so indy as you tried to build off of
those numbers coming into this matchup tonight. The only Byson
who played that game tomorrow Wheeler Thomas and Noah Betterson,
a very new squad for in DSU some two years later,
But there have been some good battles between these two sides.

In all other four games outside of the one two
years ago in Missoula, they've all been decided by single
digits between the Bison and UC Davis, So buckle up
if that ends up being the case. Later tonight it's
NDSU and you see Davis in game number two on
the Young Bison basketball season. We're inside of the University

We're with Bison head coach Dave Richmond, coach. Great to
see you. The West Coast Swing wraps up here tonight
and on Monday night. It was a good fun one.
Unfortunately came up just short against Oregon State sixty seven
sixty five to the final score. You've had a chance
to look back out of the film, what were your
reflections after opening night?

Speaker 9 (10:07):
Yeah, I think Sam, you know, in particular, just a
great college basketball game right out of the gates, and
you went back and forth. I don't know if anybody
ever led by more than six or seven, two or
three possessions, and gosh, it's a fine line, and you know,
you talk to the group multiple times between the end
of that game and right now a pregame.

Speaker 10 (10:26):
Of this next one.

Speaker 9 (10:26):
And this program isn't about losing this this program isn't
about moral victories.

Speaker 10 (10:32):
And we didn't get it done. We didn't finish.

Speaker 9 (10:35):
There's plenty of things in between the start to the
finish that that we have to learn and get better at.
That being said, like you know, for a young group
to go on the road in a guarantee game and
to compete the way we did, certainly some things that
we need to take and build off of and learn
from in a positive way because you know, we were
right there.

Speaker 10 (10:52):
We were right there, and we need to do both.

Speaker 9 (10:55):
We need to understand that losing isn't okay, we're not
about moral victories, but we also need to be able
to say we did some pretty darn good things that
we need to build off.

Speaker 10 (11:02):
And tonight is another.

Speaker 9 (11:06):
Opportunity for us to grow and not be defined by
that that failure that we had the other night, but
make sure that was a growth, a learning opportunity from
that Oregon State loss.

Speaker 8 (11:17):
Well, one of the things certainly that stood out coach
to build off of was the defensive end of the floor,
you held a PAC twelve WCC outfit to under seventy points.
Their length and size were able to win the rebounding battle.
What'd you like about your group's effort on that.

Speaker 9 (11:30):
End, Well, I think that's just it. You know, anytime
you go on the road, you know it's going to
be tough. Anytime you know, you go on the road
and quote unquote against a team that's ahead of you
from power whatever you want to call it, conference standpoint,
there's gonna be some challenges and usually those challenges come
with size, physicality, athleticism, some of those things. And our
guys responded, you know, I believe we won the glass
battle and competed and we need that needs to be

(11:54):
part of our identity, that that's tough and together, that
is Buyson basketball. And you know, we didn't shoot it great,
but we created some extra opportunities based on who we
were on the offensive glass, and we didn't allow them,
you know, very many you know, extra opportunities for themselves too,
So you know, pleased, and it was a team effort.
I thought a bunch of guys were able to get
in there and mix up our guards cleaned some things up.

(12:16):
Travion Carson on the offensive vend was able to create
and even guys that didn't play huge minutes like Carson
Smith or Emeial like they they they were able to
you know, be.

Speaker 10 (12:25):
Active for us like that.

Speaker 9 (12:27):
And Trayson Anderson's another guy. You know, I'd be remiss
if I didn't say something about Trayson's effort the other
night too, so pleased if who we were on the glass,
that was definitely a positive the other night.

Speaker 8 (12:38):
Yeah, I definitely wanted to ask you about Trayson. He
matched his career high with ten points. What did you
see from him at both ends?

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (12:44):
I just I just saw, you know, an expectation.

Speaker 9 (12:47):
I saw an expectation that you know, this program has
made tracing uncomfortable. You know, myself, I've had so many
challenging times and conversations with Trayson about you know, just
taking that and that character and making it a little
bit meaner and nastier and playing with a little bit
better motor. You know, it was a term that you're

(13:09):
gonna hear a lot in college basketball, and I thought,
you know, could you know, I thought Trayson responded terrifically,
you know, in particular the one where we're shooting a
free throw and he sneaks in there, grabs it and
gets a put back. You know, played fearless and it
was just so much fun to see played aggressive and
I think that's something that he and we can can
build off of as we move forward.

Speaker 8 (13:31):
Somebody who introduced himself to Bias the Nation on Monday
night was Markai Strickland. He had seventeen points to lead
the way. How infectious is his smile after he throws
one down while slam dunk?

Speaker 9 (13:41):
Yeah, just I mean, everybody loves the dunk shot, right,
and you know, and then you know, mark Kai just
has that about him, and his teammates would tell you
that too. Mark Markai is a gravitating personality and we know,
and I didn't hide behind it. We had a very
talented young man who's got great character, and it's just
in a lot of he's a freak athlete, and we

were able to do some things to get him in
some spots and he was able to catch, finish and
be aggressive. And what was encouraging is you saw it
in different ways. You said in the half court of
him executing the concepts that that he's been taught, which
is really fun to see. He also saw some things
where I feel like this is vitally important too for
our group, where our defense created some offense and and

(14:23):
you know, Kai was just terrific in the open floor.
He got a couple easy ones too, but he also
made some things happen with just his sheer ability and
certainly encouraging.

Speaker 8 (14:32):
How versatile of a piece can Kai be for us
this year? Just playing multiple positions?

Speaker 9 (14:36):
Well yeah, and you know, I don't know how if
you want to say multiple positions, but just his ability
to guard multiple positions and to you know, be an
impactful player in different ways based on Okay, he can rebound,
he can rebound outside of his area, He's done a
great job of cutting. Just little things like that off

(14:56):
the ball, Sam that are a big part of this.

Speaker 10 (14:58):
Proud of him too.

Speaker 9 (14:59):
He shot the the free throw a little bit a
little bit better as well. And again there's still some
things like you know, two out of our three contests
we've played against you know, quote unquote Power Power five conferences,
where I think two as we settle in and play
some pure institutions a little bit like tonight, where he
can even do some more things on the block, and
get to some certain spots, and we could teach him

(15:21):
to slow down in there when they're there, when there
isn't you know, a guy in front of him, when
when he's got to score around somebody as well.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
Tonight's opponent use Davis.

Speaker 8 (15:29):
Before we jumped on the matchup, I got to go
back to memory lane for a second because we played
in an absolute classic against the Aggies twenty fifteen. It
would have been the year after NCAA tournament and your
first first season, and then the season opener some seven
or eight months later rally back to winning overtime.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
You remember it, Yeah, I do. You know.

Speaker 10 (15:48):
Actually, it's funny you talk you talk about it.

Speaker 9 (15:51):
I remember being down, like, yeah, it was like two
nine to go and we were down like seven or
eight points, and for some reason, you know, Corey Brown
sticks out to me and making some you know, terrific
plays and just kept fighting. And I think, like, certainly
a different group, right, and and a bunch of years later,
and a whole bunch of gray hairs, you know, on

(16:11):
on my face and on the top of my head,
but an identity of buys and basketball, just fighting and
kicking and screaming until the very end the group that
was tough and together and too if I remember right,
a couple of days later we almost beat Illinois. We
should have beat Illinois. So but you know, Jim Less
has done a terrific job. I got a lot of
respect for how hard the kids play. They're gonna throw

(16:33):
a bunch of things at us, and it's gonna be
a challenge here this evening.

Speaker 8 (16:36):
Yeah, last year they were a top twenty in the
country and turnovers for certainly, certainly an aggressive defense will
be up against.

Speaker 9 (16:42):
Yeah, absolutely, and encouraged by the way we took care
of the ball the other night, you know, at Oregon State,
and that's going to be a huge focus.

Speaker 10 (16:49):
It's going to be a huge focus to.

Speaker 9 (16:50):
Allow us to get great shots. But also then there
are great opportunities to get great shots. But also then
a big part of their offense is their defense, and
we've got to be solid. We They're gonna mix things up,
They're gonna throw different bodies and different defenses, but that's okay.
Like we've still got to be present on our catches.
You know, we still got to play play aggressively on

each catch, and we've got to do the things that
we can control. And again when you have a luxury
of some guys like an Andy Stefano Witz and Tomorrow
Wheeler Thomas and guys like that that can can pass
and catch and do the right things, find the right guys.
You know that's encouraging leading up to the things here
this evening.

The Bison's getting set to take on you see Davis
tonight sixth e were meeting in program history and good
to go down memory lane with coach back when these
two squads met here in Davis, California in twenty fifteen,
the season opener. That was the season after the bison
made it to March Madness and Coach Richmond's first season

back to back trips to the Big Dance play Gonzaga
the opening ground and then some eight months later it
was NDSU against Davis and come back fasted a nine
to nothing run by the Bison, trailing with two minutes
to play in regulation that sent the game into overtime,
and then the Byson scored ten straight to begin the
overtime period and ultimately won it seventy nine to seventy one.

As coach said, a double double from Corey Brown and
Dexter Warner for the Bison as well.

a handful of folks who have come on out for
this Wednesday night matchup. Place probably holds a right say
about a couple of thousand or so. They do have
some upper level bleachers that are currently packed in right
now that just a lower bowl available. They have a
big scoreboard over to our left that'll have all the
stats and replays throughout the game as well. Let's get

you some keys to the game in tonight's matchups. Starting
for the Bison offensively, first key will be take care
of the basketball. NDSU did a great job of that
against Oregon State on Monday night. The Bison only turned
it over seven times against the Beavers. They'll be going
up against an uber aggressive UC Davis defense. This aggie
defense likes to gamble, they like to deny passes on

(25:31):
the perimeter, and they forced turnovers, which is a huge
piece for them scoring. Last year, they were seventeenth in
the nation, forcing fifteen turnovers per game. So can the
Bison take care of the basketball? That's a big area
to watch tonight. And then defensively for the Bison, we'll
go back to old faithful. Can the Bison finished possessions

defensive rebounding. They did an excellent job against Oregon State
keeping the Beavers off the class. Offensively, they held Oregon
State to just five offensive rebounds while getting eleven offensive.

If the Bison are able to get that done and
put up similar figures tonight, they should be in for
a good result against a UC Davis team that'll go
hard to the glass. This has been the case. Ih
